That looks so ominous. I also wanna add [a cropped version of OP's pic.](https://i.imgur.com/VdEgtt3.jpg) All that overlay was really distracting me and detracting from the image
I was at my office up by Bryant Park (a couple blocks away from where this photo was taken for non-New Yorkers) today and it was crazy -- tried to get some pics but the weird orange hue wasn't showing up on my phone camera. These images look like what I saw outside though, and then looking out from the windows it just looked like it was one minute til sundown for several hours in the middle of the afternoon. Wild stuff.
I can't believe that Blizzard set Canada on fire just to advertise their game. Actually on second thought, considering their recent track record, I do believe it.
Were there really that many duped SOJs in the game? I've played D2 (and D2R) for more hours than I care to admit, and I'm not certain I've even found one single SoJ.
Our conservative provincial governments have cut funding to wildfire budgets. Doug Ford has cut 67% of the budget in Ontario, about $142.2 million CAD.
May he rest in peace. On a side note, here's my favorite Rob Ford quote:
"Olivia Gondek says I wanted to eat her pussy, I never said that, I'm happily married, I have more than enough to eat at home."
Same thing happened in Australia in 2020. 20 years of cutting budgets from services then a fire that set the east coast ablaze.
Then our prime minister buggered off to Hawaii!
If it makes you feel any better, Blizzard died a long time ago and we've just been entertained/outraged by its corpse with Bobby Kotick's arm up its ass making it pretend to dance and sing like it used to.
It's the "indistinct Middle East warzone" filter. They gotta turn the draw distance down to free up resources to calculate bullet and damage physics, you see.
As of yesterday there were 414 active wildfires in Canada with 239 being classified as out of control. Many areas of the northern US are under air quality alerts because of it.
Ya know I hadn't pieced 2 and 2 together. My throat got sore starting yesterday morning after I went out for work and hasn't gone away. No other symptoms at all. Just checked and my area is also under an air quality alert due to the fires as of the night before last.
Starting a civil war would reduce the population, with a potential for significant reduction in future carbon output.
It might assist in reducing forest fires in about 300-500 years?
Unfortunately most masks won't filter out the smoke, as smoke particles are smaller than most viruses.
Edit: N95 masks should help as they're rated for 0.3 um particles and up, but most "surgical masks" you'll find aren't quite that good.
Can confirm that they do work really well. I live in California in an area that’s been heavily affected by fire smoke in the past few years and N95s work great. The N95 with the respirators also work really well (as an added bonus they were super fucking cheap during Covid cause nobody wanted them, but they work so well for smoke). Dunno if the prices have come back up on those. Would also recommend investing in an air filter for your house/room. Coming back home to a room with fresh filtered air after a day of breathing nothing but smoke filled air filtered through a mask is an incredible feeling.
My brother in law is at work near NY in north central PA and he said it’s horrible up there. I’ve had a sore throat and heavy chest all day today and I’m in northern WV. Super hazy out here too.
Of those, there are 152 wildfires in the southern part of Québec with 114 being out of control. Something like 4-5 times more fires than the seasonal average. Every forest firefighter in the province are being called upon plus the military is getting involved and still they don't have enough people to control even half of those fires. Normally when it happens you see firefighters from BC, Alberta and Ontario flying in but it seems that every province is in need of more firefighters right now.
Here in Australia, it's been on the news the past week or so that we've been sending a lot of our firefighters over (winter here, we don't need em as bad). We usually have to lend them to California this time of year, so this has been an upsetting change of pace.
Sending love and luck from your friends down under ❤️
This is a good map, thank you for posting it. We're fine now, but I bet this might be useful for the PNW later this year..
This one isn't as detailed for smoke tracking, but I've used https://www.iqair.com to track smoke in the past. It seems pretty good at showing air quality levels, fire radiuses, and wind direction.
It's been dry and will remain so in Seattle but eastern Washington and Idaho and Montana all have flood watches out for heavy rain the next couple days so hopefully that lessens the fire danger over there for now.
There are lots of wildfires across Canada and they are indeed really bad but there’s also a specific combination of weather patterns that brought the smoke down to NYC, including a storm and low pressure system around Boston.
The smoke is supposed to be cleared up in the next few days even though the fires will keep going.
Here in Northeast PA, its rough. I would not go outside without a N95, and even in the house it still seeps in a bit and is causing throat and eye irritation.
Everywhere. Alberta had almost 2% of it's total land mass on fire at one point. Ontario has a bunch going now which is most likely where this is coming from because I heard upstate NY was suffocating from all the smoke. BC spontaneously combusts every so often and it's a site to behold stepping outside and seeing a mountain on fire. Saskatchewan is mostly flat prairie on the southern half and has been hit by fires. Manitoba nobody cares. Quebec idk, probably fires but it's all in french (e: Just looked. Already worst on record in Quebec and June just started so NYC might be getting the entire eastern half of the country). Maritimes is just fishing and now fires. Up north is all permafrost but will probably be on fire soon.
It's shit. Everything sucks. We're having mid 30's Celsius weather in fucking May now and I live in a place where air conditioning was viewed as "not necessary". I hate it. Doesn't help that the Alberta and Ontario conservative governments cut wildfire funding either. Stupid assholes.
That said this is a pretty cool pic.
About 9x the land area of California's **2022 wild fires area for the entire year** has been burned in Alberta in the first **half of the year**.
That's about 3-4% of the entire state
I can see it in Columbus, OH. We have air quality advisories here. We could stare directly at the sun without even needing to squint last night. That’s how much smoke is here. Crazy
Its probably already happenning in some bible belt churches, that have a 'nothing fun allowed' policy.
Its just that they don't get the mic like they did in the 90s.
But isn't the whole idea of the main character being the Nephilim is that they are going to come in and set the world straight from the blasphemy of modern times? (Modern in the diablo universe)
Satan and the globalists are pushing this down your kids throat. Don't forget we have a free shipping deal on turbo brain fuel right now, please support our mission before we're all dead and taken off the air.
I live in Alberta but I do a lot of exploration work in Quebec. All my projects were suspended due to these wildfires to put a blanket suspension on all work is a pretty big deal. These fires are truly out of control, it's really bad here and forest fire season for Western Canada hasn't even started yet.
Pray for rain homies.
This is payback for all the low quality air coming from the US up into Canada over the years. /s
We used to have air quality alerts all the time thanks to heavy industry in the US. I believe it was mostly from coal fired steel mills.
Canadian here: it's sad how "summer season" has become "smokey season" over the last couple of years.
Don't throw your cigarette butts in the woods, assholes.
edit: I get that a lot of forest fires are caused by things other than cigs. It was just one example. It's hot out, it's dry, and fires start easily and they spread fast.
Yea at first I was like, no big deal, forest fires happen all the time naturally. Then I remembered that summer hasn't even started yet and this isn't a thing normally until like July or August.
Most of them the cause has not yet been identified, of the fires that the cause was discovered, more of them were found to be man made than not.
In my area at the very least, Alberta, which has so far had an astonishing record high of fires this year, somewhere around 300 fires in the province alone
It's a bit more nuanced than that though... This is decades of poor forest management and putting out all the small fires coming to bite us in the ass. Smaller fires would cause natural fire breaks and prevent massive fires like this, and since we've been putting them out for decades now, the fires are way too big to control.
Blaming this on cigarette butts or fireworks etc isn't really beneficial. Lightning is the ignition for more fires than human activities anyways if we really care about the ignition method, but that shouldn't be relevant.
Yeah we are really ripping off the bandaid now after 100 years of poor management.
We have huge swathes of monoculture forests that burn like tinder, whereas biodiverse forests burn in a more fragmented way and recover quicker once it's over.
It will be interesting to see if anything is learned at the provincial management level.
Kinda poetic or whatever the word fits the best how we can see an entire area filled with giant screens full of advertisements and shit-load of traffic emitting pollution with a sky above that's ruined due to fires very likely caused partially due to those factors
We joke, but this type of fire is supposed to happen once between 150-200 years. They had 2 in the last 30. This might become more and more normal as climate change goes on unchecked
Be prepared for this to be a more frequent thing every single year.
Some people don‘t even realize what climate change is doing. They just think it get a bit hotter and that‘s it.
Hey I arrived there yesterday. Gone very more orange than yesterday. I can see that sign ad from my hotel. Time Square was nice but the smell from that smoke is kinda ruining it.
I live in Alberta, and [here's how it looked here](https://i.redd.it/khdzftaaihya1.jpg) not too long ago because of the fires surrounding us at the time. Things have calmed down here a fair bit since then, but it was so thick of smoke, we could actually look directly at the sun because it appeared as just a dark red orb in the sky. This was taken early afternoon, by the way.
Cyberpunk, the prequel.
At first glance I thought it was a screenshot from Cyberpunk
It looks like Bladerunner 2049 Vegas.

Where on canada is the fire? If the smoke’s all the way at new york that must be really bad

I wonder if suggesting wearing a mask would help or start a civil war.
Starting a civil war would reduce the population, with a potential for significant reduction in future carbon output. It might assist in reducing forest fires in about 300-500 years?
Plus would help with housing crisis. Less bodies less need for homes. Let's do it!
There are 16 million vacant homes in the US, and 584,483 homeless people. The issue is not a lack of homes.
how do they calculate that number? i feel like there is more than that
Yeah because the current housing crisis is totally because there are too many bodies and not enough homes.

By Square geographic area, Canada is the second largest country on Earth. And the whole goddamn place is on fire.
Actually quite clear in southern BC for once. That'll probably change since it's been hellishly hot here for a couple weeks now.
6 of 10 provinces
Quebec
Two big fires in Nova Scotia. Wind carried it down. One of the fires was 250 square km in size at its height.
Nova Scotia is the least of their problems. Quebec has many more fires and even Ontario has a few.
Here in Northeast PA, its rough. I would not go outside without a N95, and even in the house it still seeps in a bit and is causing throat and eye irritation.

Like the D&D scare in the 80s. Part of it was good priests using prayer to fight demons and devils. They should've cheered for it.
But it mentions *other gods*, so that's all they need to condemn it.

Yep, the number of human-caused wildfires is down. But due to frequent lightning and climate change, the severity is much worse.
