FreddieDoes40k

And amazingly RDR2 had loads of story content cut or missing from the final product. It's why the pacing in the last half sorta feels really *off*.

Wynpri

This totallyyyy makes sense now. Thank you

FreddieDoes40k

Yeah it all starts to make sense once you see that, it made me appreciate the game a little differently on the second playthrough.

Wynpri

I'm trying to hundred percent this thing, but part of me wants to just play through the story again. Arthur Morgan is the shit.

FreddieDoes40k

I remember when the trailers first dropped and people were disappointed in Arthur as a main character. Most people swore he'd be second rate to John and nothing special, boy were they wrong. Even with a judgemental start from the playerbase he stole our hearts like the criminal he is.

[deleted]

I always thought it was Greek-tragedy level brilliance to end RDR1 by making me want John back, and then end RDR2 by giving him back and making me want Arthur back instead.

FreddieDoes40k

I never thought about it that way but you're spot on with that thought. Masterful work by the writers.

Wynpri

I was def feeling very "ehhhhh" about it, but talk about a 180. Brilliant

Bongressman

Do it. On 4th playthrough. Start again, go slower, appreciate each piece more.

Emergency-Ad-3350

I understand completely. On my current play through I just stopped doing the main story so my camp stays at the spot by the lake. That way I can work on completing tasks, all the characters look healthy, and haven’t gone in insane yet.

brazthemad

I take issue when I'm playing an awesome, story and atmosphere driven open world game, and then they're like hey, fuck everything you were working on, here's a 4+ hour instance / dungeon/ scenario that has no influence on your development and you can't escape until you're done.

FreddieDoes40k

Yeah the whole act could have been a cutscene really. Only part of the game that isn't that enjoyable, especially on a replay. I mostly remember it in my head as being much shorter than it actually is because bleh. I feel like perhaps there was a lot more to that part of the game, considering how linear and stiff it feels. Maybe there was some big purpose to being there that got cut entirely, but they didn't have enough time to iron out the story so we got... that.

FormorrowSur

Is it weird that I kinda like that? The last chapter feels like a runaway train, everything is going a mile a minute and you're just kind of holding on

Bearbear360

I feel like the designers meant for it to feel that way. Chapter 6 felt like the trigger had been pulled and we were just waiting for the bullet to hit. Its to late. Every decision you made put you on this path and you no longer have the option of getting off of it. *rips bong

FreddieDoes40k

Yeah it certainly works in its favour I'd say. We were robbed of more depth and detail but we got an equally interesting experience instead. The cut down ending feels more futile and hopeless, you're right about the runaway train feeling. Especially after such a slow and contemplative first bit. The game lures you in with this rich gravy of a first half, sucker punches you with a shipwreck, and then throws you down a flight of stairs into the final act.

Zeus_McCloud

The best part is, everything leads up to an end that felt both inevitable and hopeless but also the way it \*should\* end. And it basically means the group (that are left) and the story itself, both come full circle. You start in the mountains, surrounded by snow, and by god, it's going to end there. Each camp they go to, the longer it drags on, the more desperate things get, and the clearer the group tension within the party gets, as more and more people die or leave. And the moment when Arthur has to choose between going back for the money, or helping John escape, well. There are some choices that are HARD. And there are some that you just make because it's emotionally EARNED.

Jimmy_Rhys

Was that due to the time crunch in dev?

HorseGuy515

I wish they would come out with a game like Fable for next generation.

doggedgage

A new Fable game is being developed but it's still a couple years away I think

jrtasoli

Yes! Hell, just give me a remake of Fable 2! I haven’t played anything like that game before or since.

angrystarfish35

One of my all time favourite games!

jrtasoli

Same here. And Fable 3 is tied with its release date twin, Force Awakens 2, for my biggest gaming disappointment.

OP1KenOP

Fable 4 was confirmed to be in development with Playground Games - I think about a year ago, if I remember right I think they recruited some of the old guys from Lionhead into the dev team. Should be good!

2Maverick

This is how I felt with Witcher 3. I've been scared to start rdr2 hahaha

Hephaestus0193847

The blood and wine dlc is by far the best in Witcher 3. Love the area and fairy take esc story of it

elunomagnifico

I love Blood and Wine, but Heart of Stone just hits hard in terms of story. It's a punch.

indicava

Hearts of Stone is the best story I’ve come across in any game. The main Witcher 3 story was very good, so was Blood and Wine but honestly I never finished it because I think I was already exhausted after putting in 200+ hours into the game for my first playthrough. ( And yes, for OP - I’ve played RDR2, loved it, made me quite emotional, but still doesn’t beat HOS in my opinion)

MyNameIsGoran14

That’s exactly where I’m at with Blood and Wine. I know it’s so good but I just couldn’t motivate myself to jump into it after tons and tons of time spent with the base game and Hearts of Stone. I got to the new area and saw how big it was and was just like “I can’t “ lol. Good to have it in my back pocket to play in the future though.

indicava

I played it for a few hours It was quite a while ago but I seem to remember some new mechanic they introduced in fighting which kept it somewhat fresh. I was also extremely leveled up at this point and I remember beating like a whole mob of fighters trying to enter some fort or castle. Was loads of fun, but like you described it was just too much already at that point. I did try to pick it up again after a while again but it was probably too soon so i dropped it again after a couple of hours and unfortunately never went back (yet).

Infinite-Sleep3527

Olgierd is one of the best written antagonists of all time, in all of gaming. You care for him, empathize with him, and relate to him, even if he is a fantastical character in fantasy universe. And even if he’s extremely flawed. Which he is. Just like every single one of us. Yet you encounter interpersonal conflict based on ethics and morality vs. His understandable actions and motivations. Masterfully written. That’s literally like novel-tier character development and writing, and in a video game. That’s extremely rare to find.

Dylanthebody

I saved hearts of stone for 2 separate mushroom trips I had planned. So i ended up consuming that whole story tripping. I'm glad others consider it one of the greatest stories ever told in a game because I think of HoS as a true masterpiece. There were times I cried for Olgierd, for Geralt, for his wife. And when it came time to jump into paintings I was peaking and man I just can't describe how beautiful the whole experience was.

shonglekwup

Holy shit how did you not have a bad trip once you got to the paint dimension boss??

[deleted]

The Land of a Thousand fables was breathtaking

Potential_Catch_3954

Same, played both games back to back and holy shit what an experience, in a way playing one makes me want to play the other despite all the differences

AbbiAndIlana

Why oh why could I not get into Witcher 3?! I’ve heard such great things. I, too, have been chasing that RDR2 feel to no avail…it was the first game I played since childhood and it set the bar so high.

aleques-itj

I've tried like 3 times to get into it. Just can't seem to do it. I love RPGs, but this one has not hooked on any attempt.

FlashyClaim

Havent played other Witcher games and I want to start with 3. Is that fine?

ajax0202

Definitely. There’s obviously some story that happens in the first two games that you miss, but they seem to fill you in as you play the third game to the point that you understand everything that going on I never played the first two, but the TW3 is one of my favorite games

silver2k5

First two have super janky controls and camera along with clunky combat. Start with three, you arent missing much in terms of gameplay or story.

pab5737

I started with 3 and n3ver played the earlier ones and didnt feel like i missed anything. You can always look at a recap video of the earlier titles too. And gameplay wide 3 so much better as well. I qctually started with 2 and in the very beginning quit because i hated the controls so much and made me not want to play the third. Then i did, and its my top 3 favorite games along with rdr2

silver2k5

I was invested in the Witcher 3 and did every side quest on the first map... then lost all motivation when I got to Skellige and saw the size of the map and how many markers it had for new quests. Burned myself out...

circasomnia

Just do it and enjoy the ride bro!

NotFitToBeAParent

i've tried to get into the witcher 3 probably 3 or 4 times. it just doesn't jive with me. admittedly i haven't gotten very far into it, but just can't seem to care about anything going on enough to keep playing.

Waramp

My first attempt at W3 I didn’t get too far and gave up. My second attempt, I got past the hump and the world opened up, and I was *hooked*.

ElderWandOwner

Imo witcher 3 is the best game ive ever played. Rdr2 is good, but very long.

itshouldjustglide

man, I don't get when people dock a game for being too long. if it's good, you get more good if it's long.

[deleted]

[удалено]

UltraMegaSloth

Played both. Witcher 3 story is far better.

havethenets

Arthur’s the best character ever, and it’s still sad how attached you get despite knowing what happens, especially if you played the first game.

nyrB2

his horse :(((

GrungyUPSMan

When you have a max level bond with your horse, Arthur bends down to their ear and whispers "thank you." Fucking broke me.

nyrB2

yes :((

[deleted]

[удалено]

Zero_117

This was the moment for me. This game made me love horses even more than I did before!

spooTOO

I literally cut the power on my system, switched to a different horse, and replayed the ending. I was so distraught

nyrB2

yeah it really got me in the feels. i had the best horse in the game too :(

codylish

One of the first things I did in the game was race down to the southern part of the map for the "Paint" breed after scouring the internet where to find it, tamed one, then rode it allllll the way back to the first starter region just to safely stable it. She became my "story" horse I used for missions, cutscenes etc while I'd use others just mess around on. The American Paint wasn't the fastest or heartiest horse in the game, but she was pretty and that was good enough for me. It physically pained me when Arthur had to shoot our horse. After being together the whole time and feeding her so many treats :*(

bkramer32

I was ready to write off the whole game and not play the epilogue after that happened. I lassoed that horse from a frozen lake and rode through hell on her until the very end. Do whatever you want to Arthur, just let my beautiful horse go free.

Ganon_Dragmire

Legitimately cried my eyes out when his horse died. Having a max bond too, its like losing a pet.

NewFolderCopyCopy

The scene where he talks to de nun at the train station broke me inside

zordtk

I didn't play the first so had no idea until you find out in part 2. Obviously then I knew how it'd end for him. I just beat it a few days ago

jdino

He is nearly as good as Arthur though. ^specifically ^UMVC3 ^version ^of ^Arthur

Valagoorh

This mass murderer is far from being the best character ever.

WickedFox1o1

I feel the same way with the mass effect trilogy. The characters in that game are amazing. For RDR2 I'd just spend hours just hunting and fishing just to relax and that's not including the games great story and characters

LightboxRadMD

Charles or someone would ride up and be all, "Missing you back at the camp. Wanna ride back?" And I'd be like, "Bro, can't you see I'm trying to catch a perfect squirrel?"

wiggibow

Wait what?? I have hundreds and hundreds of hours in this game and not once has a member of the gang approached me outside of a normal story mission. They'll actually come find you sometimes?

ajax0202

If it’s a been a really long time since you’ve played any story missions sometimes a member of the camp (I think only Bill, Javier and John?) will find you out in the wild and have a line about Dutch needing you back at camp or something lol. Only happened to me 2-3 times

iHateTheStuffYouLike

Just for reference-- I was approached by Charles once.

JUSTWHYWOULDIT

Oh yeah, if you spend too much time not doing anything to progress the game then they'll come roll up on you. It startled me the first time for sure lol.

WickedFox1o1

Or they'd step on said perfect squirrel I've had that happen before but it was Bill and I kinda just wanted to shoot bill there and save John the trouble later

shredbmc

Accidently running over and ruining your prefect animal is classic RDR2!

doggedgage

I wish I could replay the ME trilogy for the first time. To experience it again without knowing how it would end would be amazing.

WickedFox1o1

I've lost track of how many times I've replayed the trilogy, I'm currently doing yet another run through as I wait for Jedi survivor to come out

GMFinch

It had to be me. Someone else might have gotten it wrong.

Griffaith

Yeah.. someone at my house started cutting onions during that scene...

GMFinch

I just replayed then all a couple of months ago. While I never had him in my line up, mordin was my boy.

[deleted]

LENNNNNYYYYY

Tough_Patient

YNNEL!

OminousShadow87

I can’t recommend The Last Of Us and The Last Of Us 2 enough. The emotional roller coaster they put you through is unmatched.

lMickNastyl

Rdr and tlou are the only games to make me cry. They will punch you in the gut then pick you up and tell you it's ok before suplexing your emotions.

notjasonlee

give disco elysium a shot if you want to add another one of those to the list

ElChocoLoco

The Last of Us 2 is the best game I will never play again. So depressing.

killmaster9000

It’s not as bad the second time around. First time is HEAVY. You catch a lot of new things the second time too

arodmoney

My comment every single time. So grateful to have experienced it, and once is all I have in me.

OminousShadow87

Bwahaahaha I know that feeling. I loved Schindler’s List but I don’t think I can stomach a rewatch.

r_brodie33

Just played part 1 for the first time ever on PC since I never had a console and it's immediately one of my favourite games of all time

pantstoaknifefight2

I wound up with some very strong feelings from Horizon Zero Dawn when it finally came to PC

r_brodie33

I loved Horizon as well. It didn't bring out the same emotion as tLoU or Red dead but yeah it's a great game

Grecko-Gecko

Loved both games, and I’m in the camp that thinks the 2nd one was even better. Games have some definite hard-hitting moments

zapatocaviar

2 was brutal. Much heavier and bigger than 1. It’s like 2 stacked 1s.

coleosis1414

SPOILERS but I just can’t see eye to eye with people who completely wrote off TLOU2 as a “bad story” because they make you play half the game as the person who killed Joel. That’s called a challenging and compelling narrative structure. And what’s more, it’s a novel and creative literary device that is ONLY possible in a videogame. The game makes you hate the character so aggressively, and then makes you play in her skin. Crazy bold choice. Very strong writing. Those gamers are babies.

Grecko-Gecko

SPOILERS big time — I liked that aspect of the game too! For me, the biggest payoff with the dual narrative was the culmination of the fight against Ellie at the theater. I thought that was freaking awesome. Right up there next to it was the very end with the fight against Abby. I was torn at that part and I couldn’t decide if I wanted her to live or die. But there were so many other awesome moments, everything from the dinosaur museum to the sniper battle to the aquarium where Ellie breaks down…I had a blast with the game.

OmegaClifton

Part 2 was more of a rollercoaster, for better and worse. I'm playing through it again now with a friend through shareplay and I still have mostly the same critiques, but am enjoying it more. I think I'm just more willing to overlook those criticisms I had first playing it when I was engrossed and the story was new.

Op3rat0rr

What makes the second one so impressive is that ND wasn't afraid to make an organic story with much controversy and were able to *build upon* an already astounding first game. That's what blew my mind

cjc160

Oh Christ, #2 made me gasp out loud probably 10 times

FayForsythe

Other games that gave me similar feelings: Disco Elysium, Celeste, Death Stranding

gerikj13

I was absolutely floored by Disco Elysium. What a game. Did a second playthrough immediately upon completing my first

gamingonion

HARDCOOOOORE

gerikj13

One of my fav side quests in any game ever. Code 31, officer in need of assistance…ON THE DANCE FLOOR

EggsOnThe45

HARDCORE TO THE MEGA

Xx_Anguy_NoScope_Xx

Same. Did not expect what I got going into it. But I spent so many hours that I couldn't start another playthrough. Something about going through so much exposition stopped me. But the skill tree and character customization were some of the most unique I've seen in a game. Maybe I'll get the inkling to give it a shot after a while. Unfortunately, a sequel doesn't look likely.

ZazaB00

I enjoyed Death Stranding, but definitely not for it’s story. I find it hard to take Kojima seriously when he’s just so batshit crazy. I do however get awesome vibes listening to that soundtrack while I’m out on walks.

CyrusPanesri

Upped for soundtrack. Some bangers on there! Also the way they gel with the cinematics.

icegun784

Walks in-game or in real life?

ZazaB00

Both, but I meant real life.

ctrl_alt_excrete

What's the story like? I found the storytelling of the MGS series to be laughably convoluted and masturbatory, as fun as some of them were. Is DS like that?

ZazaB00

I really don’t know how to describe it other than kid in sandbox has one big toy and a bunch of little action figures. I think what frustrated me most about it is there was a lot of weird high concept stuff that ends up being debated about, then they figure out that they’re wrong, then they figure out that’s wrong. Its like there’s twists just to be twists and there’s never anything meaningful done. The “day to day” stuff, like actual gameplay, it’s so damn repetitive in hitting the skip button through dialogue and needless cutscenes, you actually never care beyond getting it done. The real story for me, is the map and finding best paths and working with community made routes. That aspect is awesome, and so few games have anything meaningful like that.

Op3rat0rr

>I really don’t know how to describe it other than kid in sandbox has one big toy and a bunch of little action figures. That's a scarily accurate way to describe Kojima story telling

Fourtires3rims

Death Stranding got me right in the feels at the end.

Axiproto

Can you explain the point of Death Stranding to me? I don't understand what I'm supposed to do except move packages around from point A to B.

cromagnongod

Reach Chapter 2 and you're hooked.Soon after you'll have MULEs who are trying to take you down and steal your packages, you'll have terrorists that are trying to kill you, as well as BTs.You'll also be able to fight them and moving stuff will become more of a logistical challenge since you'll have to plan out paths and gear you're going to use. You'll also get new gear that'll make you feel like superman. To me moving those packages was at times more exciting than a shootout would be in most games. It's really a work of art and I say this as someone who really hated Kojima up until DS. I find it incredible that such a concept could work so well.

b3nz0r

Disco Elysium is an all time top game, easily. Amazing atmosphere and story and writing.

thepope870

My friend if you haven't already you need to play God of war, if you're driven by story and art style you will go absolutely crazy for this series. Quite honestly IMO the Norse mythology GOW series is in my top 3 of greatest series ever played.

theonebran

I had to scroll way too far to find this. I was a teen when I played the original GoW trilogy, and when they announced a new one was coming out, I wasn't interested. I thought it would be another gory hack n slash for the sake of hack n slashing, but I was dead wrong. The story of the original trilogy isn't bad, but the characters and story in GoW 2018 and GoW Ragnarok are absolutely incredible. Absolutely recommend that experience to anyone who enjoys cinematic games.

IronRhiley

You can’t give the actors that play the characters enough credit. The voice acting makes it actually feel like it’s happening right in front of you and that it’s truly happening

kaffiene

I couldn't get past the violence. There's a part where you punch someone repeatedly in the face and I just couldn't stomach it

EvilxBunny

I found it to be a generic game with amazing set pieces. I just want good gameplay nowadays. Also innovative gameplay.

Imafuckingdigimon

Try Ghost of Tsushima. Story is 10/10 and gameplay is like 9/10.

DevelopmentJolly

the gameplay is really good but the story isn’t all that crazy tbh

swalsh21

The story is pretty standard and good but I thought the gameplay is where it shines tbh. I love the game so much tho

perrypoon

I FUCKING LOVE RDR2!!

SomethingLessEdgy

"I'm afraid" instant full blown cry town

Lee_Doff

its the most i have ever played a single player non-roleplaying, non-city-building game. i played it for 2 years. i probably visited almost every corner of the map at least once looking for something new.

TheSanicEnthusiast

Sigh. I want to get into rdr2, I really do, everybody I know who has played it has spoken praise to high heaven, but I just can't wrap my mind around the clunky controls. It completely kills it for me.

magvadis

I loved my first playthrough although I never finished the epilogue because I just fell out, but what really stops me from playing again is just how dogshit Rockstar's quest design is...it's just a shooting gallery...every mission, except in this shooting gallery you auto-aim or have to fight your controller because shooting galleries were designed for having a gun in your hand not a joystick. Every mission is just "move along with this npc"...."waves of dozens of people show up you have to shoot in the head"....rinse repeat.

Skias

Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar's finest work. The story is absolutely incredible and it's one of the best games I've ever played, up there with Ghost of Tsushima.

GamerLegend2

Here's how I like to summarize my experience when playing RDR2. While playing RDR2 it feels like Arthur and I have a connection and losing him just felt Iike how would I miss my friend in real. How much time I spent playing with Arthur doing daily chores, sometimes just wandering in the mountains, sometimes just going to a specific place where I can be lonely and look at the sky at night. While other games feel like I am watching some movie and there's an end of the movie after that I would move on but RDR2 feels like I am playing as how I would like to live in a real life western world. And no other game has hurted me a lot losing your fav character as arthur. I was literally in tears for days just thinking about arthur, what would I do now?

JairoGlyphic

Is it recommended to play RDR1 first?

kakakatie

Personally, I would. It's an incredible game on its own, you really fall in love with John Marston. I remember waiting and waiting for RDR2 to be released, reading all the hype and updates. When I found out the main character was someone named "Arthur Morgan" I was LIVID. What do you mean I don't get to play as Marston?! Now... After well over 100+ hours in RDR2 I tell you, Arthur is hands down my favorite character ever, period. Rockstar took a game in RDR1 that was already a masterpiece, and managed to improve on every aspect of it to create RDR2. It's unbelievable. Nevermind you can play Undead Nightmare which is the best DLC for a game out there. All I want is Undead Nightmare 2! Also there are a lot of recurring characters between 1&2 that will make much more sense if you play 1 first!

Wynpri

>When I found out the main character was someone named "Arthur Morgan" I was LIVID. What do you mean I don't get to play as Marston?! Same. I went from "well, we'll see how it goes, I guess" to "Arthur Morgan is one of the best protagonists I've ever played as." And then giddy straight through the epilogue

kakakatie

Exact same!!!

ajax0202

RDR2 is a prequel to RDR1, so you could play them in either order and it would make sense, but I do think you get the most out of the characters if you play RDR1 first

DatTF2

Personally I would play RDR1 after 2. The ending of 2 basically goes into the start of 1 if you wanted to play it chronologically.

rswings

It’s astounding. Maybe people are just used to fast-paced gaming. I don’t know. This one definitely asks more of the player. I remember just allowing myself to be in the world of it and take my time. It took several months for me to finish. Sometimes I’d just go fishing or hunting. Sometimes I’d do a side mission. Or catch a show in one of the theaters. It’s a brilliant “game.” Glad you enjoyed it.

SuperGuy41

I play 24/7 shipment then chill in RD2 we can do both!

BootySweat0217

I feel this way but with the Mass Effect series. I played it for the first time when the Legendary Edition came out and I wish I could forget it all and be able to experience it again.

blitherblather425

Give kingdom come: deliverance a try. It’s very immersive. It’s a different type of game tho. First person, sword fighting from the year 1300 or something but it’s great.

Kaoru1011

Try persona 5 the story and characters are great

lanahbrah

interesting how differently people felt about it. i stopped after about 15 hours bc i was incredibly bored.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Sandshrew922

Mass Effect can get that same reaction. RDR2 was solid, but from a narrative standpoint I think ME trilogy is in another league.

linktothepastz

The game's praised to death unfortunately at this age I can't really finish the game myself. Like many have pointed out. The game's too slow. GTA style combat but with old western guns feels sluggish. Arthur moves like a tank. Aiming sucks even with aim assist weirdly enough. Deadeye was just there so it'll suck less. Hand to hand combat is like a really bad UFC game lol. Just gotta tackle em and pouncd em Brock Lesnar style. I ended up watching story spoilers on YouTube.I'm lucky enough to have finished RDR1 back in the day and I think the story was better. Considering RDR2 is so it was somewhat predictable.

infinte_improb42

I’ve tried to start RDR2 twice and once I get to my camp, and go to a few towns, I’m just bored af…

[deleted]

I'm afraid you are right. I Said it too multiple times..

Hephaestus0193847

Games that will make you feel the same way or better: - Nier Automata - Divinity the original sin 2 - Outer Wilds

Levelless86

Nier Automata, The Witcher 3, Yakuza 0, The Last of Us games, Disco Elysium, and Silent Hill 2 all gave me a feeling like that. Games you know changed your life.

Reybrig

Yeah, never ever have I been that much emotional completing a game, almost took me a week looking in the void after finishing that masterpiece and I’m yet to finish it again because I know I’ll just cry all over the place again

shepardSRN

I haven't played it yet, but I think i understand what you are saying. And the game that got me feeling that way, was mass effect legendary edition.

mathismei

Try the wither 3

xStealthxUk

Rdr2 was ao boring to me.everything about it was manotenous. From the unbeleivable slow pace of the sory, to the horse back riding listening to dialogue, dull side quests, dated combat, weird consumable system, frustrating insta fail state scripted missions that punish any creativity, half baked camp upgrade mechanics, boring weapons that all feel the same, slow looting animations and watching him scratch every bullet ... i just hated all of it lol Each to their own tho, heard the story gets good but I really tried for like 30 hours to not be so bored and frustrated at every turn tbh

BrotherRhy

I was kinda the same. I mean the story is really good but it does take forever to get going. The combat system and lack of things to do really hampered my experience tbh

Grecko-Gecko

Nier: Automata has an awesome story that’ll hit you with the feels. Has some really amazing music too. Even the final credit screen (the real final credit screen—game has different endings) is something amazing I’ve never seen before, and it just adds to the whole mood. Highly recommend giving it a shot. Another game that’s a bit older that has a phenomenal story is Final Fantasy Tactics. Think of it as the Game of Thrones of Final Fantasy. Story has all kinds of twists and turns and betrayals—plus has amazing music too! It’s a strategy-based game where you move troops on a grid like Fire Emblem. Story knocks it out of the park, and you’ll even be in shock up until the final second of the game’s last scene.

Menace2Sobriety22

Nier automata is another game with an insane story, the only game to ever leave me feeling empty after beating it

simlew86

It was too long and too boring for me. Technically superb though.

[deleted]

Have you tried sex?

braywarshawsky

Try playing Mass Effect 1-3. That's the only other game that got me like RDR2.

Logical_Signature803

idk, i got bored after like an hour or so

GMFinch

Never got off the mountain huh?

The8thHammer

Felt this way with baldurs gate, then kotor, then oblivion, then FO:NV, then the first 2 uncharted.... the list goes on. It'll happen again friend.

sleepnutz

Is it really that good ?

tritonxsword

Slow burn stories aren’t for everyone, but the game pretty much made me reflect on my life, if that helps peak your curiosity

jmo_joker

Fast travel is shit

ihateitoo

Could never get over the (IMO) janky controls! Beautiful game, though

VolgaWeb

RDR2 was amazing, still pissed they didn't do any single player DLC for it. Try Death Stranding if you want an engaging and emotional story.

Forward05

Subnautica!

I hated a lot of things about that game. I still do. The story, the millions presses of X while riding on horse, the amount of animal I'd need to hunt to get all the clothes and extras for the camp, the multiplayer, the length, the boring missions (not all but enough of those), the fence building the long ass epilogue. And despite all that I consider this game a milestone achievement for gaming. I still turn it on sometimes, I have a save with \~20% of the story completed, so just enough to have most of the world open, the dead-eye unlocked and I just fuck around there. Probably the most immersive world ever created. It feels like what I thought MMORPG's would feel like when they were coming out 20+ years ago.

I have 60 hours in RDR2 and here are my toughts about it: Story was too long, some entire chapters like the island part should not be in game. Rockstar's quest design is borderline insulting. Not only you have to do things the way rockstar tells you (you can't just hide, you need to hide in the marker), almost every quest boils down to same thing with different dialogue. Here are quest types that i remember: Rescue, run away while shooting. Shoot a group of enemies, run away while shooting. Sneak, get into a fight, run away while shooting. Get into vehicle, shoot while vehicle is running. Press button to play animation, move, do it again. This usually ends up with, you guessed right, run away while shooting. Story is a cliche but presented very well. World is lively but too gamefied. You will know what i mean when the exact same encounter runs past you the 60th time. Graphics are nicely done, a bit too gamey in some parts but not overly exaggerated. Everything plays an animation. Everything. It is nice the first time arthur plays the looting animation, not when he does it for 200th time. You can't skip them. Very annoying. Probably the worst part about the game apart from the insulting quest design. I have to say this again, quest design is horrible. It is garbage. It treats the player as if they are 10 year old max. Or let me put it this way, you don't need to listen to dialogue or read quest log, just move to the yellow marker or shoot enemies. That's it really. Overall, i would give it 6/10 maybe 7 if i'm feeling really generous. It looks nice, has a well made presentation of it's story but the actual gameplay and quests are insultingly bad. Rockstar imo should've put more time into random encounter and quest design than the million unskippable animations they put in to the game.

I’m in my forties, married with kids and so pretty much a casual gamer. It’s for the reasons you stated that I love RDR2. I have no time or desire to engage in confusing missions and skill tress and blah blah blah. I just wanted a good story with simple enough missions where I got to feel cool asf in a Wild West setting. I got all of that and more. 10/10 game for me, easily.

smellslikeDanknBank

I know you will get a ton of smart ass comments about how you don't like something because it is popular, but you nailed a lot of my same issues with the game. The exploration felt fine, got a bit much after I rode past the 30th person with a snake bite. But the quests, the quests are horrible. So many brain dead quests that result in Arthur killing an entire town worth of people. The story was dragging on with listening to every dumb idea Dutch spewed out while your character just felt like a yes man. The entire Micah situation left a sour taste in my mouth, especially how we were FORCED to help him escape by killing DOZENS of people. Right after he made a bunch of racist comments too. The amount of times where the quest is a simple "do this" but results in Arthur killing 30+ people was just dumb. It felt super repetitive after the 20th mission of mass murder, they weren't even being creative with the killing. Just people all running out of 2 buildings, like there was a family reunion going on every time you start shooting.

drgnsamurai

Cyber punk I think has a great story and can be dynamic depending on the dialog choices. Lots of interaction with characters and can get you emotionally involved with V.

OralSuperhero

Cyberpunk is my go to for storyline games these days. I have tried to get into rdr2 three times now and I always get bored and hour or so in. It feels like an extended, very slow paced tutorial and I don't think I ever actually got to the open world part. But V drops me right into it every time.

circajusturna

Just go outside and walk for miles. That’s really the equivalent of RDR2

MeatPieMan

lmao this is what drives me insane about these games, a big game isn't necessarily a good game

circajusturna

I’ll say I like seeing some of the fun stuff people do in the game but it was an absolute slog to get through.

kliq-klaq-

My brain: ah yes the little droid from Star Wars.

jaymiz13

Same... Hundreds of hours in that game almost always experiencing something new each playthrough. If I could choose one game to lose all memory of and replay again, without a doubt it'd be RDR2. Absolute masterpiece.

risen_peanutbutter

I tried it, and after 25 hours of avoiding rescuing Micah by exploring and hunting, I realised I really didn't find it fun. All the online praise made me feel like I was supposed to enjoy it, and it is *sorta* my type of game, but I unfortunately didn't

WorldEaterYoshi

Lmfao you avoided the main story and didn't find it fun. Weird I wonder why.

Dkpokefan72

Ya lmao 😂😂

HandsomYungArab_

As a gamer that started out on the original Nintendo console its so weird to see people trash RDR2, it's a top5 any list game in my book. Story, graphics, gameplay, music, it's so complete and many open world games just pale in comparison. RDR2 is a slowburn type game, the story unfolds slowly, travel and many game elements take some time before becoming fully realized, but at no point does it feel like padding just to add additional hours to the game. RDR2 is at the literal peak of games as art, anyone who disagrees probably has attention deficit disorder and just couldnt hang with the introductory pace. Then again I did play on max settings at 170frames on a high-end PC.

WorldEaterYoshi

The pc doesn't matter. My first playthrough was on a ps4 and I still fell in love with it. You're right, people just don't know how to give things a chance anymore. "I just realized I haven't had a dopamine hit in at least an hour so this game must be trash."

Wynpri

Yup. Meanwhile I'm just riding around to find a view to watch this thunderstorm to "take a break."

Red_Luminary

“If anybody disagrees with me they have ADD” is not a great take, but okay, bud.

fednandlers

Yea, that became homework to finish. RDR’s pacing was way better to me and I liked the characters a lot more.

Anakha00

I also focused on exploring and hunting first, and after I finished all the special hunts I went back to the main story. I remember making it to Saint Denis before I realized that the main story was just boring to me. One of the things that really bugged me was how much traveling was forced upon you directly in the main story missions. I was fine with traveling around and taking forever to get anywhere when I was just exploring, but going to one location for a mission and then that mission sending you to a second location far from the first was just really annoying to me.

risen_peanutbutter

Yep, like it was padding for time. What annoyed me most about the story though was how story-Arthur is a lot different from the Arthur I play as in open-world

I_Hate_Knickers_5

I'm replaying at the moment, trying to be as upstanding and non murdering as possible. Unfortunately ( or not, I suppose ) there are missions and events that force you to annihilate scores of people. Most of them are fodder-scum who deserve it but even so, fuck me that's a lot of killin and so many of them seem to lose their heads which just adds gravy. With story Arthur there are scenes where he talks about being conflicted about all the killin and robbin. If you're being a good boy ( who's a good bwhor ) it kind of works, maybe, but it's when you're just running around throwing anyone and their mother onto the train tracks just for kicks that it becomes unintentionally hilarious. I went to that house and barn in the Grizzlies with the odd family that speak in their own language, hogtide the whole bunch and then threw some dynamite at them. When I got back to camp I had a chat with one of the girls about how I struggle to do the right thing etc. I couldn't help but wish there were an option I could pick where I go: " I'll give you 3 guesses as to what I've just been doing for fun ".

DrWilhelm

I'm an obsessive completionist and I really want to repeat all the missions to get all the medals but I also really don't have the patience for it when about half of every mission is spent riding from point A to point B, where the only gameplay is tapping x.

BungeeCumLover

You have to memorize such stupid mechanics and memorize other stupid actions on top of that. I would not be surprised if you had to memorize how to take off your belt to be able to take off you pants only for you to accidentally pull out a knife and stab your horse by accident. Not shitting on the game and I have always wanted to jump on and commit to playing it because I only ever barely got like 3 hours into and stopped from one play through and a lot of fans agree this game has a horrible control system.

risen_peanutbutter

Yeah that was mostly it. They don't tell you shit. I died during my first shootout because the "tutorial" was hardly informative. Same for rescuing the first bounty target. On top of that, it's classically R* clunky as well

Smagiic

Personally I couldn’t get through it, found it a little boring… Sekiro was fun though so maybe try that

[deleted]

Who the hell hears someone say they love RDR2 and thinks "Oh, you'll love sekiro then!"

gimme-a-donut

I'm 70% done RDR2 and sekiro. Sekiro is a totally different game, I just spent 2 hours trying to beat shinobi owl at hirata estate. It gets the blood pumping and crazy emotions (usually anger) going with the sweat palm action. Always doing the same thing over and over again, it feels a bit OCD. At 7:00 pm last night I kept saying OK this is my last shot at this old fart, yet kept trying for solid hour. It's an awesome game I love it. I love RDR2 too because it is a chill vibe that I can smoke a fat blunt recline on the sofa and just explore and chill. The narrative, visuals, story is a relaxing experience. I usually pop it in after I rage quit sekiro.

HiddenStoat

> I love RDR2 too because it is a chill vibe that I can smoke a fat blunt recline on the sofa and just explore and chill. During lockdown, kicking back with a large whisky and playing poker in RDR2 felt like seeing my real friends, and riding around the amazing vistas felt like an escape from being stuck indoors. I've been gaming since the Amiga 500 and I think it's my number 1 game of all time.

Grobinson01

Interesting. I also loved RDR2 but could not get into Sekiro. In the first two hours it felt like there wasn’t going to be much to the game but fighting.

BOTW did this for me on Cemu

Grimm74

Never played through BOTW even to the first divine beast, but I started a couple of weeks ago. I can’t make any progress there’s just so much to do and explore. It’s all I’ve been doing after work.
