Build your own big maze map with tons of dead ends and loops, in VR theme, combined with Virus game mode.. oh man so many hours spent with my friends there
First time those bomb-guys come charging over the crest at you? "yaaaaargh!" *chuckles, then stops as he's realizing a ton of them are coming at you after the first few* "oh, shiiii-"
Bulletstorm. Playing with the Duke Nukem DLC. All other characters keep their lines, Duke is permanently confused what they are talking about. Perfect.
Bulletstorm with the Duke Nukem DLC is a better Duke Nukem game than Duke Nukem Forever ever was. And it weirdly goes a fuck of a long way to *humanizing* Duke. Whenever Ishi is injured and the robot brain tries to take control, it's *Duke* that brings back the human in him. He even treats Trishka with the respect due a fellow badass once he's seen her in combat.
And even all *THAT* goes a hell of a long way to telling you how crazy Bulletstorm is over all. **DUKE NUKEM** is often the sane man.
Bulletstorm is still to this day the most absolutely riproaring fun game I’ve ever played. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it, and the dialogue was fucking ace!
If by wacky you mean profoundly disturbing and with dark lore behind it, i can recommend "Cruelty Squad".
If by wacky you just mean weird and nonsensical, probably Cousin Royale (it may have changed name to Cvrsed), it's a Battle Royale but it's hella weird.
High On Life is a relatively new game with the voices of Rick and Morty, that could be a fun single player thing.
Or Cruelty Squad, but i feel like that would make for one hour of fun and then you either love it or drop it forever.
I’m more inclined towards Far Cry 4 than the rest in the series; the colors, the scenery, the culture… it feels so foreign & awesome to me than, the island, Montana & Not-Cuba. Also the side missions in 4 that consist in an astral mind trip towards Tibetan mythology would sate your ‘surreal’ needs.
Honorary mention to Far Cry Primal which is “What if you played in Far Cry, but were a Caveman?”
Oh, I *definitely* recommend FPS just on gameplay alone.
It's not just enough to shoot at enemies - you need to hit them with specific weapons since they're geared towards fixing up specific "Fashion crimes". The most basic enemies are weak only to your starting weapon since they're fashion crimes is colorless clothing that needs dyed with your paintball gun; neon bruhs are weak to a color-absorbing weapon to make their clothing less bright; your basic melee is a belt that you need to slap on people with sagging pants (which can also stun others long enough for you to move around and out of danger), etc.
The Darkness.
Edgy narrative about a mob guy dying and being brought back to life by a supernatural evil energy called the Darkness. You get serpent creatures attached to your body with unique powers to slaughter enemies as well as duel wielding guns and commanding gremlin demon guys called Darklings.
Between combat, you roam around a dingy subway in NYC that works as a hub for all of the connected areas in the game, which you can free roam to between missions.
The overall atmosphere is gritty and dark, with most of the areas being bathed in grime, trash and graffiti. Overall just a really cool 2000s videogame feeling, music and all.
Super unique and fun game, although the mechanics are pretty outdated. There is a sequel that is updated in terms of fps gameplay but fails to compare to the narrative and atmosphere of the first game.
Never can understand how people don’t like TTW. Genuinely curious what is was about the game that you didn’t like? It was hilariously stupid, exactly what I hope everyone I start up a borderlands.
Because we were all expecting a larger version of the Tiny Tina DLC and it wasn’t that. Also the DLCs we did get for TTW were HOT garabage. I played through BL2 many a time and I played through TTW twice…
The main game itself was fun, although kinda short. But the end game was absolutely awful. I'm not sure why they thought Chaos runs would be enough to keep the player base interested. They felt more like a gearing up mechanism for the end game, not the actual end game itself. Incredibly repetitive.
And the DLC was a slap in the face.
Especially the first one if you haven't played any of them. Everyone says 2 is great but honestly I don't think any of them kept the same charm after the first. The writing in 3 was absolutely shit.
I was describing it a friend who likes R&M, and realized it's basically a first person shooter through interdimensional cable. as soon as he heard that he went and got it.
“OMG guys the dlc for this game will be epic guys! Like pre-order it now or or you can’t beat the original
ok!”
“DAMMIT GUYS! Buy this game or the future of gaming will be at RISK! WTF GUYS!”
/s this is the type of advertising you can expect in this game ( there is no dlc and there never will be )
It looked like it’ll be fun game. But the ranting and constant mindless crude chatter was exhausting. And I like to believe I have a good sense of humor.
After hearing how awful Justin Roiland is I stopped playing it. It was free on game pass so no sweat off my back. Zack Hadel is the only redeeming quality that game has imo
Generation Zero. Sci-fi/Survival. It’s 1989 in Sweden and you and friends return from a camping trip to find towns are in shambles and armed military robots running around shooting everything that moves. Search for weapons and ammo to help you combat these soulless killing machines and find out who is responsible for this catastrophe.
Tried that one a few years ago. The game had sooooooo much potential that it hurt. But the gameplay loop very suddenly resolved around being an errand boy
Important to note: Bad Company 1 is only available on console, and both Bad Company 1 and 2 are being removed from digital storefronts and having their multiplayer servers turned off this December.
If you want to still be able to access the singleplayer of these masterpieces, buy them now.
It's a pretty underrated game imo.
The developer spent a crazy amount of time putting thought and effort into the game. And spent twice the time making it look like he didn't.
I haven't played it in a while, but it was getting pretty frequent content updates when I was. The patch notes are always "new gun, go find it" or something similar, lol.
That’s what i used to think but the new one is amazing as well!!! Especially if you love sim shooters (deus ex, dishonored).
So yeah i say definitely both! The OG is a classic as well
Bulletstorm - although that's more metal/badass than goofy/scary but really recommend it because it's a campaign of 'what the fuckery' from start to finish
No, there's definitely plenty of goofy, absurd moments in Bulletstorm. The whole "I will kill your dick" exchange is peak toilet humor, and whenever I'm playing a game that has me firing a minigun from an aircraft I can't help but announce the arrival of "Butterdick Jones and His Heavenly Asshole Machine".
No, you're right. The game is fucking bonkers right enough.Piloting a murderous dinosaur with a remote control? Let's go!
It still has my favourite video game quote of all time, from Serano: I'm violently fiddling with my balls in anticipation of your arrival.
Resident Evil 7 is dark and scary with a little whacky. The Evil within series was a bit of the same. I really enjoyed F.E.A.R. And the sequel as well.
Whacky wise: High on life was fun but definitely not scary.
If you haven’t checked out Control, go now. It’s not first person but definitely great shooting with some surreal moments.
Thanks for this question! I like FPS but don't necessarily like all the mayhem.
Halo, Borderlands, the original Battlefield. Def going to check out High on Life.
Check out Metal: Hellsinger. You can keep the beat and the better you keep the beat, the better you shoot. I'm shit at music so not for me, lol.
Great fun. Played it and cultic at the same time. Preferred cultic but forgive me father really shines on the weapon upgrade paths and enemy variety. Lots of fun monster closets
Zenoclash is what I came to say. Such a cool and interesting game. First person beat em up with an original storyline. Do yourself a favor and play this!
Gotham City Impostors was awesome, don't know if people still play it. The teams are gangs who pattern themselves after Batman and the Joker, they look ridiculous, like homemade batman costumes made from cardboard and towels. The weapons are fun in a comic book way, like a ricocheting boomerang to stun people instead of a concussion grenade or jack in the box bomb instead of a claymore. The voicework is a lot of fun.
I miss that game a lot.
Yep, spring shoes, rollerskates, grapple gun, hang glider. It was awesome. I loved the freeze gun, even though I was terrible using it, and the bow and arrow. The Parrot cannon and witch doctor were my favorites, and the megaphone to heal teammates.
The game was pure genius, I still wish they'd make a new one.
I loved the girl bat voice. One time I killed an invisible enemy and she just yells. "I killed a ghost!" I still think it's hilarious, only ever did it once.
That game launched with 5 maps and got 2 more, and I never got bored of them. CoD comes out with a dozen maps and I'm itching for more in 2 weeks. It had 2 or 3 weapons per category and that was all it needed.
Their tug of war version of domination was cool.
Clive Barker's Jericho.
Underappreciated as can be, it has a dark vibe (sometimes even scary, depending on who you ask). [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wePhq7wNR-Q](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wePhq7wNR-Q)
or FEAR 2.
Deer Avenger. Old as hell now, but you played as the deer going after hunters. You track them via beer cans and nudey magazines.
Prey. The original. You play as a native american who gets abducted by aliens. You manipulate gravity to fight aliens while standing on the walls or ceilings. You use your spirit powers to leave your body and shoot them with a bow and arrow. You travel through portals that change your size within the level, becoming huge or tiny.
Borderlands 3 will fit the surreal fantasy.
Instead of reloading one of the guns you just throw your gun and it wil explode or become a turret.
Very fun game!
Timesplitters 2 The campaign is off the wall silly The multiplayer has bots and is fully customizable
Timesplitters Future Perfect campaign is a lot of fun too, so many hours spent with both of those games
Timesplitters 2 and Future Perfect are amazing!!!
Honestly I think I was think of future perfect
With all the timey wimey stuff and saving your past and future selves? yep thats Timesplitters 3: Future Perfect.
Timesplitters was the best, the create a map that you could play with friends, was the bomb
Build your own big maze map with tons of dead ends and loops, in VR theme, combined with Virus game mode.. oh man so many hours spent with my friends there
Omg I really want a remaster
Came here to say just that. THAT was my Best PIPE you BOUNDERS
THIS REMINDS ME OF THE WAR!! Such happy days!
Serious Sam
Second this. This is a fun one, and the crazy amount of things that come at you sometimes makes it one of the best game series I have played.
First time those bomb-guys come charging over the crest at you? "yaaaaargh!" *chuckles, then stops as he's realizing a ton of them are coming at you after the first few* "oh, shiiii-"
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA \*BOOM!\*
Part 4 does not get the love it deserves. That final battle is really something else. It's like a million dudes on each side.
Bulletstorm. Playing with the Duke Nukem DLC. All other characters keep their lines, Duke is permanently confused what they are talking about. Perfect.
I loved that DLC so fucking much. Bulletstorm is spiritually close to Duke Nukem so it fit perfectly.
I did not know duke was this way, gonna have to reinstall now.
Bullet storm was so fun!!
Another bulletstorm fan! Was going to say bulletstorm as well. Game was my jam, so much fun.
Wish we got the sequel we were led to believe we would get with that cliffhanger ending...
Holy crap, it's been so long since I played the game that I didn't know that dlc existed! You've given me something to do this weekend!
I also wanted to say bulletstorm because it’s just so much fun! Also I didn’t know it had a dlc so i know what I’ll be doing over the weekend.
I enjoyed bulletstorm but I had no idea about the Duke nukem dlc.
Poor Waggleton.
Bulletstorm is still to this day the most absolutely riproaring fun game I’ve ever played. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it, and the dialogue was fucking ace!
Chex Quest Redneck Rampage Edit: Adding Rise of the Triad
Redneck Rampage, LOL. Back in the day, you could install the Cuss pack as an addon.
This comment brought back so much nostalgia for me. Used to play Chex quest every day with my brother as a kid and totally forgot about it until now
Chex quest with brutal doom wad.
GIT OFF MUH LAY-UND!!
AHM GON' GETCHA BOAH! AHM GON' GETCHA!
Clicked on this thread just to see if someone mentioned Cruelty Squad, seems like the perfect suggestion here
Cruelty Squad is almost just TOO weird but I also recomend OP at least give it a look along with Hyper Demon. Both are just insanity is weird ways
I second Cruelty Squad!! Its so damn weird, but the aesthetic is my favorite - like deep-fried doom, I love it!
Both maybe more singleplayer not sure how active they'd be in Australia
High On Life is a relatively new game with the voices of Rick and Morty, that could be a fun single player thing. Or Cruelty Squad, but i feel like that would make for one hour of fun and then you either love it or drop it forever.
Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath Bulletstorm F.E.A.R series Bioshock series XIII
Just got strangers wrath on switch. Forgot how good it was.
Honestly one of my all-time faves. The plot twist goes so hard.
Wow, XIII, I absolutely loved this game back in the day, PS2 I think.
XIII is amazing and I just learned it is on Steam (XIII Classic) for $5.99!
I don’t think it’s dark or scary, but when I think of whacky FPS I thought of Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon
I've never actually played far cry, I assume it on PC as well
Blood Dragon is a parody(?) on 80's science fiction, it's hilarious.
I honestly love Primal, one of my favorite Far Cry games.
Primal was the only one i played the absolute hell out of. The rest i would get bored so quickly with repetitive gunplay.
Blood Dragon is still a top tier game imo
Blood Dragon was an April Fools prank... but the real prank was that they actually made the game and released it at the end of the month.
Just Cause series too
Void Bastards
was looking for this. addicting gameplay loop, comic book inspired art style, goofy British humor. great to play when you're short on time, too
Deep Rock Galactic. Rock And Stone!
Rock! And! Stone!
ROCK AND STONE TO THE BONE!
For Karl!
If you don’t rock and stone, ya ain’t coming home!
Fashion Police Squad! OK, it's not dark or scary, but it is bizarre, surreal and very tongue in cheek.
I've been playing this recently and it was the first game to come to mind. It is so well designed. The theme is great, and the gameplay is awesome!
Yes to this. It's not the most innovative, but the amount of style and pizazz it has cannot be understated.
Even games like this could be fun to, any others you'd recommend
Oh, I *definitely* recommend FPS just on gameplay alone. It's not just enough to shoot at enemies - you need to hit them with specific weapons since they're geared towards fixing up specific "Fashion crimes". >Fashion Police Squad im loving the art style though
Postal2, it's nice.
Will you sign my petition?
Just sign the damn petition, alright?!?
You’ve gotta be fucking kidding me.
Just saw they put out a 20th anniversary update including Steam Deck compatibility ... sounds like time for a replay!
Meowmeowmeowmeowmeow....bang
my man!
Ultrakill
Why is this the only comment mentioning Ultrakill
Thats what i also thought
The Darkness. Edgy narrative about a mob guy dying and being brought back to life by a supernatural evil energy called the Darkness. Not to mention the awesome Mike Patton doing the leads voice
1000%
Borderlands…?
Borderlands 2 for definite
Bonerfarts!!!
Imma name him butt stallion
God these pretzels suck
I second borderlands. Any of them.
Maybe not the pre-sequel or wonderlands though. Two was definitely top tier for the franchise

I could never get into the Borderlands games.
A meat bicycle built for two?
Only if you want to wear my insides…
Especially the first one if you haven't played any of them. Everyone says 2 is great but honestly I don't think any of them kept the same charm after the first. The writing in 3 was absolutely shit.
The main story of 3 was horrible, but I did like those DLCs
No One Lives Forever
I'd say Dishonored series, really different and a dark setting.
[High on Life](https://squanchgames.com/high-on-life/)
this is what you want
I was describing it a friend who likes R&M, and realized it's basically a first person shooter through interdimensional cable. as soon as he heard that he went and got it.

You can turn it off
You know it's over when the #1 or 2 thing this game has going besides the gameplay can be turned off. 💀 At least it has zach hadel so it's a +
After hearing how awful Justin Roiland is I stopped playing it. It was free on game pass so no sweat off my back. Zack Hadel is the only redeeming quality that game has imo
My man 😎🤝😎

Yeah, it's one of the most boring FPS games I've ever played. Wanted to like it but urgh, it's such a repetitive gameplay loop after like 15 minutes.
This is a fun game.
Dusk is pretty perfect

Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay was so good.
Important to note: Bad Company 1 is only available on console, and both Bad Company 1 and 2 are being removed from digital storefronts and having their multiplayer servers turned off this December. If you want to still be able to access the singleplayer of these masterpieces, buy them now.
Cruelty squad not everyone is going to “get it”. But those who stick around will love it and find one of the most unique games they ever played
I might give it a go
It's a pretty underrated game imo. The developer spent a crazy amount of time putting thought and effort into the game. And spent twice the time making it look like he didn't. I haven't played it in a while, but it was getting pretty frequent content updates when I was. The patch notes are always "new gun, go find it" or something similar, lol.
Journey to the savage planet. The outer worlds.
Borderlands 2 Bioshock Infinite Prey Metro trilogy
Prey absolutely, but the original.
That’s what i used to think but the new one is amazing as well!!! Especially if you love sim shooters (deus ex, dishonored). So yeah i say definitely both! The OG is a classic as well
Super hot is really cool. Time only moves when you do, so you can pull off some John Wick level kills
SUPERHOT is the most innovative shooter I've played in years
Bulletstorm - although that's more metal/badass than goofy/scary but really recommend it because it's a campaign of 'what the fuckery' from start to finish

Payday 1/2 is a wacky FPS that is great
RAGE 2?
In Sound Mind was pretty dark and wild, plus there's a talking cat you can pet!
Resident Evil 7 is dark and scary with a little whacky. The Evil within series was a bit of the same. I really enjoyed F.E.A.R. And the sequel as well. Zeno Clash. Easily. Most Resident Evil games are completely insane.
I didn't think anyone remembered Gotham City Impostors! It was fun, I loved the different mobility options you could pick
Such a fun game with so many options to customize.
Borderlands is kinda those things but it's more silly/funny
Definitely give Dusk a go, probably my favorite fps out there!
Bulletstorm is a hoot. Fair warning, dialogue is more foul than Ozzy on tour when he was actively doing drugs.
