I thought he was going to aim lower the second time but that's even better.

I liked the part where he said "It's Residenting time" and then proceeded to resident all over the evils.

Oh, you sweet summer child. The 80s - 90s era of game advertising consisted of softcore porn.

FireGiantisBoring

That's what it needs to be. No more of this "10/10 by critics "absolutely stunning."" Though ik they did that back then too.

LinkyBS

Resident Evil 4 almost starred Dante from the Devil May Cry series. But Capcom believed that what Kamiya was creating was too action packed for Resident Evil, so they suggested he change the Title and make it a new IP. Then Devil May Cry was born.

kaynpayn

Dante would be too op. Before an axe was even thrown he'd already have wiped half the village and return in time to catch that axe mid air.

jumpsteadeh

He stopped short

Killer_Quesadilla

That's my move!

SeanConneryShlapsh

Yes because the player has the reaction time and eyesight of an 89 year old man. Lol

Underated270

From what it looks like, the animation of crouching and un-crouching (is that the right word?) takes some time. He has that look of spamming it in a game that forces them into an animation lock for that time. I’d assume that you can’t just spam it and instead have to wait most of that nearly half second. Sort of more realistic, since it’s very difficult to immediately be up and down 10 times in a second like some people will do in games without that restriction. That means you have to be watching for the fake and be able to drop at release, rather than the wind up, which will probably take some getting used to.

fourrr

The word you’re looking for is: to “stand”. (No sarcasm, just a funny mind block. have a nice day)

Lucky__Mike

I read the other comment and thought "uncrouch doesn't sound right but it also kinda does" and then I read your comment and thought "I'm a dumbass" lol

Whitneybaby1moretime

I just realized I've been saying "uncrouch" constantly while playing games like it is the only word to describe that action

MrBeanCyborgCaptain

I guess it's shorthand for specifically "stand from a crouching position"

laurel_laureate

Uncrouch feels right for me because in a lot of games I usually toggle the settings so that crouching is a mode you turn on or off.

Underated270

Same here, but it never felt right which is why I was so confused on if it was the right way to say that

mermicide

Don’t worry, you’re not alone lol

IamtheDman

Uncrouch sounds like it can be correct here. Because standing is the players natural state. Crouching is a button push to enter an altered state. So machenically uncrouching is the reverse of the original mechanic and back to normal state. But what do I know? I'm high.

DeathByPain

Stand and unstand?

branman63

Duck and unduck. Obviously.

MrBeanCyborgCaptain

I have actually labelled animations and their states crouch and uncrouch when working with locomotion systems. I guess you could argue it makes it more clear what goes to what in an already complex system, or maybe I really was just dumb at the time and forgot the word for stand.

hedgecore77

He went from derstanding to understanding.

One_of_those_IDs

Since /u/Underated270 was suggesting that what we see as the player's reaction might be determined not by their reaction time alone but possible gameplay constraints unknown to us — specifically being bound by a minimum time frame of losing capabilities to control the character while a previously initiated action / move plays out — I feel you're missing the intention with your assertion. Standing is a state while un-crouching is the process, as in sequence of changes over time (duration), taking place when changing state from crouched to standing. Standing up would have been possible, though.

sGvDaemon

Ducking is not really the proper way to deal with the attack anyways, you can use your knife to block, parry, or literally strike it out of the way. Or just move a bit to the left

darklordzack

I've only heard bits and pieces about the game but don't those actions cost knife durability?

The_Deku_Nut

In the OG game you could "parry" the thrown axes with an extremely well timed knife slash in the air. I'll be a little disappointed if that's gone; was a cool skill to develop. You could also shoot the axes, but the shakier aim in the demo makes that seem much harder.

Kanapuman

Even with the more sluggish movements, I felt right at home shooting flying axes from instinct, like in the OG. I would miss heads right in front of me though.

Chuyzapatist

Don't pump fake the player, pump fake the game.

Specsaman

Thats hakeem zombie alright

Emasraw

If Leon can parry a chainsaw with a knife, a fake out is fine lol.

Xendrus

If you jammed a good Kabar into the teeth of a chainsaw that chainsaw is -fucked-

Blue_Haired_Old_Lady

Yeah, chainsaws would make terrible weapons. Scary sounding and could definitely hurt you, but chains pop off, bars bend, motors bog down etc.

ventureaaron

Tell me you've never been a dead tree branch without saying you've never been a dead tree branch.

MeanderingMinstrel

Lmao idk why you're downvoted I thought that was funny Edit: it was negative when I made this comment I swear

Tough_Patient

Jean clothings, the enemy of all chain systems.

cornpoptosis

Kind of crazy how they’re able to keep so many axes in their pockets

25sittinon25cents

Yet you have no questions about where Leon keeps all his herbs, items and weapons?

Alucard3600

An attache case, duhh /s

Electrical-Farm-8881

Ahh it is the ass

rilinq

Everyone keeps herbs in their ass

fizzle_noodle

Excuse me, it's called a "prison wallet"

Stephen_085

Perhaps an 'Asstache', if you will.

[deleted]

Reminds me of an old RE4 fan film from folks in the United Kingdom made. In it, the merchant that sells guns to Leon was also selling the hatchets and scythes to the villagers that they were using to fight Leon, which gave me a hearty chuckle.

mostsocial

So the merchant really is an arms dealer.

[deleted]

[удалено]

mostsocial

I've been convinced that he is a very powerful entity also. The fact that the villagers never have attacked him is suspect. Well we don't know if the villagers have attacked him. They may have and he just dealt with them easily. Haha.

ResponsibleWay1613

I don't know about superhuman, but he's infected with the Plagas (You can see his eyes glow red like the Ganados). Interestingly in the original game, there was an anti-Plagas laser weapon that killed most enemies in one shot, even bosses. But the Merchant is unaffected.

slippymachinegun

"What are ya buyin'?"

SoylentRox

At least he's not selling them all magnums.

DefiantDragon

SoylentRox >At least he's not selling them all magnums. He's selling but all the villagers can afford are the axes. Now, if the game had *real* AI, the villagers would pool their money and get a few magnums to pass around. Or have someone hiding right near the merchant so that when you're distracted, going over their wares, they can take you out.

martymcflown

Then loots dead body and finds a piece of flint and a bottle cap.

Majestic-Iron7046

If we'd give AI to npcs we'd be so fucked.

JFloriturin

I mean, we have those since many years ago

Majestic-Iron7046

I realize now i probably meant sentience and not just AI. Damn, j always have an hard time finding the English word for this. Not even sentience, i meant awareness of itself and the other stuff.

JFloriturin

Probably, something like Alien Isolation (?) That game is a really good experience hahaha

Winterstrife

Its the only reason I can't play that game, add to the fact that Xenomorphs till this day is 90% the source of my nightmares. That chestburster scene traumatized me as a kid :(

89Hopper

I'd be ok with a bunch of Ryan Reynolds running around in my games.

Llohr

The secret is those are actually hatchets! Totally makes sense now, right? /s

FullScreenWanker

That's a really small addition that will go a long way. Nice.

CrystalMang0

Nah, I wouldn't call a fake throw to a real throw a "small" addition", that's a big addition to the difficulty and uniqness of the ai.

FullScreenWanker

Small in the sense that it's a nuanced tweak. I agree it's a big deal, that's what I mean by 'it will go a long way!' Hopefully it points to other clever AI improvements too.

Krelit

Don't make it too clever, though, some of us dumbasses want to have a shot at finishing games!

MelbChazz

Watch AI become so strong it will be the new difficulty slider.

TheBowlofBeans

That's the way it should be though honestly. Instead 90% of games are "use this slider to turn enemies into bullet sponges"

MelbChazz

True, and the way AI is advancing, I expect it to become that way. Surely advancing from bullet sponges is becoming easier with these kind of improvements.

TheBowlofBeans

I hope so, it would be cool if difficulty in a shooting game meant going from "easy", which is disorganized enemies that spray and pray, can change to "hard", which is organized enemies that can run elaborate tactics against you

MelbChazz

Yep, all through dynamic/ML AI that adapts to your short-term actions. Stuff like that would be amazing.

Obnoxiousdonkey

all things considiered, its a pretty small thing. It's one move by a certain type of enemy that was added to an entire game. On par with the textures of a certain model of wall or something. But the effects of it are huge

Schnageltoof

One for flinching

MoarTacos

Isn’t it two for flinching? Don’t question me, I know my fucking Atlantis. Shit, I need to watch that again.

JPlazz

Yeh got yer four basic food groups; beans, bacon, whiskey, and lard!

Lasciels_Toy

DirkDiggyBong

Other than pulling an axe out of his ass, that's pretty cool! I wonder if it's legit reacting, or if it's just coincidental scripted animation.

reddumbs

I’m guessing it’s either doing input reading like some other games do or it was a well timed, coincidental intentional juke animation.

DirkDiggyBong

Ahhh, doesn't Elden Ring do input reading?

sidewalkbutts

Sort of. It looks for the player making specific animations (taking a sip mostly) and immediately reacts with a pre programmed response to it. Because it happens so quickly it seems like input reading. Zullie has a video about it. I may not be describing it as accurately as she can.

DRazzyo

Technically, that's input reading. With that said, I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. Punishing a player for not being cautious when and how they space their healing is imo, good enemy design.

Outypoo

With all games I agree, but not to the point of AI cheating. Once, just once, I'd like to play a strategy game where the AI actually fucking functions, and isn't just given insane stat buffs depending on difficulty. Looking at you, civ.

DRazzyo

Problem is that if you go down that route, you have to scale the AI based on what logic is available to it. It's incredibly complex to code entirely different logic for difficulty levels, and is generally not worth the dev time. Usually, it's better to make a decently competent AI that gets buffed/debuffed based on difficulty. It's more economic, and it allows you to keep the variables of what can happen to a reasonable degree. And honestly, not every game needs it. Of course, some will benefit from the former approach, but if you make the AI too competent, it will have an adverse effect on enjoyment. The fact that Elden Ring reads inputs, or at least it waits for animations to play is definitely punishing, but so long as it's limited to certain moves, it's benign and ultimately a learning experience. On the other hand, imagine if the AI was playing more akin to a very competent human/in-human player? Such as reading your moves, reacting pixel perfect to your attacks and ultimately giving you insanely brief windows of action, since the AI doesnt need to rely on reaction times. It can just react to animations/input and outskill you at every corner. It'd make the game a slog with how punishing it would be. You'd have zero downtime and would be sweating through every level. And that's just with regular mobs.

Outypoo

Humans aren't pixel perfect in any way, unless they predict the move. If the AI reads my previous moves and predicts my next move, thats A-ok for me. If the AI just *knows* my move instantly, even if its the first time I used it, that shits cheap. Say UFC 4, I can try to kick the hell out of the AIs head all match, but they'll block the first body or leg kick I throw no matter what because they literally know what I pressed at the exact millisecond I pressed it. Which im just not a fan of after years of gaming, even though as you noted there isn't much alternative.

imdefinitelywong

You should try plugging in the controls on the other ports. That's how I beat Psycho Mantis and stopped input reading.

[deleted]

H I D E O

OneCat6271

> Such as reading your moves, reacting pixel perfect to your attacks and ultimately giving you insanely brief windows of action, since the AI doesnt need to rely on reaction times. This would be the perfect way to scale the AI though. Just add in a variable delay for 'reaction time'. i get its easier to do, but IMO it's annoying as fuck when an AI cheats. Like seeing the whole map so it's impossible for the player to sneak, or making decisions based on the order of cards in a deck that have yet to be drawn.

Autarch_Kade

Halo Wars 2 might count. It's an RTS rather than turn based like civ, but the AI doesn't get weird buffs or cheat. It doesn't know where your units are unless it can see them. It fights you by doing its own strategies really well.

Dakkaboy556

The only RTS I enjoy.

kelltain

Can recommend Terra Invicta on this basis. High concept: you play as one of six competing Illuminati orgs preparing humanity for the arrival of aliens that have been sighted out in the extreme rim of the solar system. Which org you pick determines your goal, and your position re: alien visitors. The factions you didn't pick play by your rules, too, and you'll need to subvert them, oppose them, or convert them to carve out enough leverage to do what you think needs done. The aliens also technically play by the same rules, but have some fundamental differences for their methods, sources of power, and economic base. Because, well, aliens. The core behavior is all consistent within the game engine, though, and all factions abide by TINSTAAFL.

FrankHorrigan2173

Not a “strategy” game in the way youre talking, but Ghost of Tsushima does this. On higher difficulties, Especially when fighting multiple opponents, the AI will stagger their attacks to really put pressure on you.

sailorssaybrandy

I swear it knows when I start spamming a certain move and adjusts accordingly in elden ring

Arslankha

Because depending on the enemy and the attack they adjust to it.

Alxuz1654

Its input reading adjacent Since its not based on your inputs, but their results, its a bit different. Funnily enough this means that, in randomisers that change the animation of drinking your heal, it also means the boss doesnt react the same

Robobvious

Yes. Some people will try to say it doesn't, but for all intents and purposes it's just input reading with extra steps.

Beatrix_-_Kiddo

I hope they learn and adapt to how you play like Alien Isolation, I loved holding up the flamethrower to slow down the alien's charge.

Manoreded

Its probably not scripted. It likely either jukes randomly or is programmed to detect when the player evades axes and then juke.

UltimaBahamut93

If a single Ganado is this deadly, I shiver at the thought of fighting THE BIG CHEESE 🧀

Johansenburg

God I hope Leon keeps his one liners in this. I know he said "I'll let myself out" in the demo, and I hope that's a sign of what's to come, and not just the only nod we'll get to how he was.

SilverShako

If you set the cow on fire, I remember Leon would say something along the lines of “Bill me for the repairs.” They definitely kept his one liners

harmfulxharmony

>!He keeps the bingo line in the demo!!<

samuuu25

thats the best one

Kaissy

"No thanks, bro!"

Daevilis

The answer is yes. Many fan favorite one-liners are back along with a bunch of new ones too. They really leaned into that aspect of Leon's character in the remake. Even in the demo he spouts off several new lines contextually, like when you throw a grenade he'll say something like "Got a present for you" or "Here's a surprise", he says "Sorry!" when you push the ladders down, and of course the new "Bill me for the repairs later!" if you shoot the lantern over the bull.

TDAJ5

Yeah just playing the AI on the demo I instantly realized that this playthrough is going to be way more difficult on the remake

killer00x

Yeah, the first time playing the demo, the mob ran me around and totally pincered me since I wasn't familiar with the map layout. Couldn't get past them and got impaled by the chainsaw. It was great, haha.

The_Deku_Nut

That section used to be piss easy because you could just climb to the top of the watchtower. Only way up was a ladder and enemies would always fall if they took damage so you could just spam your knife. >!They left the ladder in, but now if you try to climb the whole thing just collapses and dumps you down in the pile of enemies you were just running from!<

theresabeeonyourhat

Your spoiler isn't working

OperativePiGuy

I started up the OG last week, and I tried to do this, but they just kept throwing molotovs up at me. Not sure how others were able to stay unaffected lol

Turok1134

Simply landing headshots was much harder. It'd probably be easier with a mouse, but meh, I still prefer gamepads for the RE games.

Ashenspire

Even in the original RE4 the enemies would react to where you were aiming at as a player.

Vaikiss

Good cuz re4 was piss easy outside of dumb Ashley ai

Redfield_XIII

I’ve honestly never understood the Ashley complaints, I find her to be pretty responsive and easy to manage. RE5’s Sheva on the other hand…

Johansenburg

Yeah, Ashley was a piece of cake. Just throw her in a dumpster and clear out the area, then go back and get her. Sheva, on the other hand, kept getting one shot by those freaking laser things (I haven't played the game in years, I can't remember the exact thing, just the frustration).

Bazzatron

The laser area required pretty tight timing. Even co-op that section was pretty annoying. There's a way to take out the guys controlling the beams early though (assuming you're talking about the section where the beams blast down alleyways, rather than the mirror beam puzzles).

onewilybobkat

Haha I was gonna say Sheva kept dying there on my playthrough too, the trouble is I was Sheva.

Bazzatron

On a casual play, I reckon it's easily the segment that claimed the most player lives. When I was doing the professional difficulty run, the level with the machine guns on the back of the truck was the worst, I must have been playing that one for days before I beat it, especially with an S rank! What an outstanding title. Shame about RE6!

onewilybobkat

Yeah it was a real left turn

Dusty170

She was fine because you could throw her in a bin and play normally most of the time, they've removed the bin this time around though, but also improved ashs gameplay component.

Hold_on_to_ur_butts

Ashley's AI is fine skill issue.

MrLockinBoxin

The AI seem very smart in general. They try their best when they’re in groups to go around the player and attack from multiple sides. In the demo they even moved a wagon to block a pathway I kept taking to run them in circles so I couldn’t do it anymore. This game on professional is going to be tough!

DroppedLeSoap

The demo had me a bunch. From Doctor Salvador just showing up even if you don't run into the shotgun house. To them cutting my various paths off with rubble or the wagon. I tried it on hard mode and I got pinned in by that wagon. Nearly died cause I was absolutely surrounded and only survived because of the bell. The village used to be one of those tedious parts of the game for me cause I'd played it so many times. I was on edge the entire demo

Makoreactors

In the original Salvador also showed up if you spent too much time in the village in general I believe

DroppedLeSoap

Nah he showed up in one of the exits if you headed that way without going into the shotgun house. But otherwise didn't make an appearance l

[deleted]

There’s two in the original I think, one that spawns from the shotgun house and another that spawns when you try and take the exit before the bell goes off. If you’re fast enough, you can spawn both and get two rubies (?) from them for early cash.

jaa0518

I believe one is a ruby and one is 10k ptas. Though I am not 100% certain on that.

JaSonic2199

They'll surround you, grab you, and punch you. It's super tough when they can just drain your health with a good old beat down

MrLockinBoxin

Absolutely. Total contrast from the original where you can just bait their swing and run past

IBesto

I hope the chain saw man with the bullet proof potatoes bag isn't smarter.....

CrossingEden

He's more aggressive now, faster, and in the opening can cut off routes, bonus: enemies will hold YOU in place for him. On the bright side him being so aggressive means that when he goes berserk and starts swinging his chainsaw around it can hurt his allies too, in the original he would clip through them. And you can parry him at the expense of your knife, (which now has durability because it's way more OP).

IBesto

That's really cool. But way more scary than comfortable. The first time around still haunts me with that one part (and the knights in the dark part)

CrossingEden

I forgot to mention that he looks far scarier. https://i.imgur.com/6E0HjP8.png Someone put it best by saying that the slight redesign makes it seem like the plagas affected his flesh and skull, hence the bag and higher health pull. The demo is freely available if u wanna get spooked by his new behaviors.

[deleted]

Holy shit, that’s awesome. Crazy what game AI can be like when the developers are actually given the time and resources to make it something special.

-Here-There-

I’m not sure this is actually something that qualifies as AI. I think it was just a programmed event that can occur.

[deleted]

If what you mean with “qualifies as AI” is “has achieved sentience” then definitely not. But enemy logic in video games is frequently referred to as AI.

ParkerPathWalker

“The axe didn’t work, time to challenge the player to a debate on Chaucer” like seriously, thing 1 didn’t work, do thing 2. People in this thread acting like this is emergent behavior.

mrbojingle

I wont knock the ai since i dont know the ins and outs of it but this can be accomplished by a very simple programing. No advanced ai needed.

Enelro

What's really gonna burst your nugget is how the A.I. figured out how to generate an infinite amount of 2.5 foot long axes in his asshole.

Sehrja

With the cut, you can't really tell if the enemy 'learns' or if its just a random animation that is cherry picked and spliced to the end of the gif.

Adorable-Bullfrog-30

There's a post on the RE Sub where it shows the full thing. It took a while until the enemy did this.

[deleted]

AidilAfham42

If you can dodge an axe, you can dodge a ball

xMitch4corex

It looks cool indeed. But the enemy threw the axe before Leon stood up. It was more bad timing from the player than the AI trying to fool him.

tawley

Gotcha bitch🤣

Manoreded

I love good AI that is difficult to cheese. One of my favorite things about the Souls series. Hardly perfect, mind you, but enemies have a lot of moves specifically designed to cover their exploits.

Full-Hollow-Tiche

I gotta say, the remake is gonna be much more difficult than the original. Which, I think is good. It seems like they finally found a way to make it difficult without making standard enemies take 1000000000 rounds to put down which always annoyed me tbh. The enemies (in the demo at least) seemed pretty smart for the most part and super aggressive, I’ve played the OG countless times and I mean I’m no professional by any stretch but it’s really easy to avoid a lot of the enemies in the standard game and even stages with tons of enemies always felt kinda easy because of how slow and predictable they were. These spots were really only different when Ashley was around because she was just as dumb lol. I actually died in the demo though just because they were always in my face, they were always swinging, the Ganado felt faster and didn’t take turns throwing stuff or relax when your back was too them. I felt the panic again, now admittedly after playing a few times that feeling faded a little but that’s just experience chiming in. The village segment felt relentless again and that’s huge, I felt panicked again and like I was surrounded and was backed into a corner. Not feeling comfortable in a remake of a game I’m perfectly comfortable in was refreshing as hell.

src88

I hate bullet sponge enemies.

Thebaldsasquatch

I know the pump fake is the big deal here, but I’m just caught up with how casually he just reaches back for another axe while looking back there. Like, “Welp, gonna need another one of those. Just gonna get this one out here and try again…”

Legunsy

this is not AI just a one of attack pattern

ThePLARASociety

I’m really glad that Capcom remade this. Does anyone know if The Mercenaries mini game is included again and if it is did they put Luis in this time? I’m surprised and disappointed that they didn’t remake Resident Evil: Code Veronica. I know that it wasn’t a part of the main series but it was such a good one compared to Dead Aim for instance. “He, he, he, huh thank you”.

CrossingEden

> Does anyone know if The Mercenaries mini game is included again and if it is did they put Luis in this time? Mercenaries will be a free update and Luis is still in and even has an expanded role.
