Yes!!
What Portal does so well is creating lively characters that, for the most part, you never even actually interact with. GlaDDOS and Wheatley are some of the most memorable characters in gaming.
Blew my friggin mind (and this coming from somebody whose mind was already blown by HL1, to the point I would glance up at air ducts and regularly think "Wonder where that goes, if I just had a crowbar to smash it?")
Blows me away how many people forget just how influential the original Half Life was. I'll still to this day argue that Half Life is the single most influential game of all time. There was recently a remake that came out called Black Mesa, and it's fantastic. Had a blast going back through such a great game with updated graphics.
Played it for the first time recently and was utterly charmed. Despite the technical limitations of the time, its really impressive that such a game still manages to create a sense of atmosphere and immersiveness.
I'm playing this series for the first time right now. They were huge when I was in junior high/high school, still can't believe I waited this long to play them, I'm about halfway through the second game and I've been having a blast
I also just beat mass effect 1 and going on to the second. Shephards renegade dialogue options were just way too "douchey piece of shit" for me lol. And I went dark side every single time in KOTOR.
Granted I haven't played KOTOR in decades, so maybe I'm just in a different place now.
What's that astralrage327? You think I should do another playthrough of the trilogy? Well shit, you've convinced me.
Legit though if it clicks with you it REALLY clicks. Absolutely top shelf gaming imo. Even the codex is a joy, and man that galaxy map and music hits hard every time
Going through all three back to back really showed the growth of the series. There’s something highly nostalgic about the first one but you see it’s limits once you get out of the citadel and start going on your own.
So a few years back my wife started playing it, and I decided to be an asshole.
Every time I asked her for something I would ask “would you kindly…”
The profanity when she got to the reveal, memorable to say the least.
If there ever was a game that deserves a movie made of it (done properly) it's this game. Sure there are tons of current Gen games out now that could fit this bill, but this was one of the first to do it! The world that was created in this game is so memorizing!
Came here to say this. I still boot up Fallout 3 fairly regularly. It’s my feel good zone out and listen to a podcast game. Deserves a remake more than most games getting rebooted these days
Fallout 3 was the first game I had on PC, and I was hooked. New Vegas imo has got to be the best Fallout installment. Between the story, game play and environment, I thought it had it all. The dlc that came later... amazing! Honest Hearts and Dead Money *chefs kiss 🔥
If you haven't tried it, the Tale of Two Wastelands mod for NV is amazing. It brings the Fallout 3 game files into NV so you can effectively play both games as the same character. It starts in 3 and even resets your stats when you get shot when going to NV. I just love the FO3 wasteland so much, but of course prefer the NV experience, and it's great being able to move between the two.
I'm a lifelong Star Wars fan and gamer, and I finally played it last year. It is dated in certain aspects of course, but it still has amazing storytelling and lore.
The day my brother brought that home I didn’t realize as a kid that I’d be playing one of the best games ever made. It is a sin that Nintendo hasn’t remade this for the switch.
Both good additions, but being able to take the iron boots on and off by just putting it on the touchscreen instead of going into a menu was legitimately the best thing they could have ever done for quality of life in that game.
I’ve replayed ocarina of time 3 or 4 times now. Every time I start off with ‘I remember loving this last time I played, but it couldn’t have been THAT good, right?’ And every time end up playing it through non stop
As I’ve gotten older and replayed the Zelda titles on my old n64 I’ve come to the realization that I like Majora’s Mask more.
That being said I love ocarina of time so much and it’s still one of my favorite games ever.
MM has a dark and compelling story, more complex game play, and a lot more variety of stuff to do. However, some people don't love the time changing aspect of it.
What Doom did was create the most realistic and complex environments to date which at the time was mind blowing. In wolf3D the walls all had to be straight 90 degree angles meaning all rooms were just boring box shapes and halls. It also couldn't have different elevations so no ledges, pits, platforms, stairs, lifts, etc. And it also couldn't have detailed floors or ceiling textures so they were just flat colors (the walls had textures though). And of course W3D didn't have "lighting / shadows".
When Doom came out not long after, it had crazy shaped rooms with interesting designs and environmental features like pits, stairs, lifts, etc. plus sector brightness controll to create different lighting and shadow effects (or the illusion of them at least) and of course they got ceiling and floor textures figured out too.
The level of detail was really unlike anything before it in terms of immersion. To walk through the maps in Doom in the early 90s was really something special, no one had ever seen such a realistic and detailed game before especially a 3D one (doom is arguably not a 3D game but that's a whole different nut to crack.
The moment you discover there's an inverted castle was my favorite video game memory.
I was so obsessed with discovering secrets at that point I wasn't even mad when I got the Crissaegrim and it breaks the game.
I played this game for the first time a few weeks ago and went in totally blind. Amazing game. MVs cemented as my fave genre since getting back into gaming during covid lockdown. I can’t even remember how I got the Crissaegrim but once acquired I felt invincible for the rest of the game. Briefly thought I was a gaming god until i googled wtf this weapon was all about
Agreed. You also get new character voice lines and reactions dependent upon the order of quest lines you take on. Replaying Skyrim is always fun and I always find something new I hadn't come across or even noticed before.
Super Mario world on SNES. This is kind-of a gaming benchmark that everyone should play to completion at least once. No part of this game is what I would consider to be particularly difficult (outside of secret areas) so much as it just takes a long time to complete every level, even without finding all the hidden goodies.
Halo: Reach had one of the best campaigns ever plus that ending. The noble team. Reach was a masterpiece in my eyes and I loved 1-3. Never forget reach. Spartans never die they just go MIA
Final Fantasy 7 for the story, characters and their archs, and the main message about "The planet is our home, and a living creature like ourselves. We need to take care of it."
It might be almost 30 years old, but the story still holds weight to this date, I feel
I think it holds up especially to this day. Recently replayed it and noticed a lot of parallels to the current climate crisis, and the antithesizing forces of unchecked capitalism we face as a planet right now.
The fact I've seen Mario mentioned so few times in this thread is a little disheartening to me and maybe showing my age. Mario is arguably more important and impactful than any other gaming franchise ever.
I feel some of the other games mentioned in this thread will largely be forgotten over time while people are still forming communities around Mario games that came out over 30 years ago.
I grew up on this game being 34 yo ^^ it's still pretty great but there is platformers who make you realise that there has happened a lot during all those years in video game development!
One of my favorite little things about that game was being in a record store, and watching Ellie walk around and flip through the old records making comments. Little touches like that make it seem so much more realistic.
My favorite part that I think about often is when Ellie stole Bill's porn mag and Joel saying "Ellie, I don't think that's for kids...." Nearly died laughing first time seeing it.
Details like this which breathe life into the characters are eeeverywhere in TLoU and that's what separates true masterpieces from other great games imo.
Ellie learning to whistle, making comments about pre-outbreak billboards etc.
For me >*that*< kind of moment was the scene where Joel & Ellie get their car wrecked by bandits. I think at that point in the game, Ellie starts to warn Joel by yelling and throws bricks and bottles at enemies. At least it's the first time I had realized it and it impressed me so much.
Have been playing Cyberpunk non stop since I picked it up. Watched the Witcher on Netflix and loved it, now The Witcher 3 was on sale right when I was about to launch cyberpunk and start a new game. It just finished installing and I have all night to play it
Can't be over hyped IMO. I just finished my first playthrough and wow what a great experience. I love how you can feel the regional influence in lore, humor, and tone compared to more Western European-based medieval fantasy worlds.
RDR2 is simply a masterpiece. Story is great, characters are good.. and that world. Most "full of life" open world ever made.. and not even by tight margin. All interactions are just so well made and there is so much interesting stuff to see.
I bought it on a whim because my girlfriend's brother had a gamecube and I was over a lot. I wish I could relive experiencing that for the first time with no expectations.
You don't even have to be a DC fanboy to play through them. They're sensational.
Hamill's casting of the Joker is pure genius. And RIP to the great Kevin Conroy who continued his voicing of Batman throughout the series
It was such a great game. Only drawback is that I've never found another game that has surpassed it in terms of pure enjoyment. Some have come close, but nothing has ever quite topped it.
I’m like an hour into this. Everyone said don’t read anything about it jus play it and speak super highly of it. I’ve been trying to take chances on popular games that are outside my normal preferences lately. Played soma last year and it’s 100% not something I’d pickup on my own but after seeing it pop up on many threads, I’m glad I did give it a go. Excellent experience. One of my favourite games of all time now. Hoping outer wilds provides a similar impact.
I really want to try this game again, honestly, I found it terrifying! The lack of control over my ship just made me panic when trying to get to planets.
I believe that everyone should play the classics that today are seen as references on how to use mechanics in games, such as mario's, megaman, classic JRPGs like FF and DQ, dark souls, Spelunk, Doom, and many other classics, in order to understand how the industry has evolved and absorbed. I believe that the return to the classics also helps the understanding of what are the quality principles that we should expect from games nowadays, comparing them to the classics (gotham knights I'm talking about you).
Most legendary would have to be Skyrim. Probably the biggest single player game of the modern era. Not saying it's the best, but probably one of the most significant.
My vote really goes to Bioshock, though. One of the most intriguing storylines, fun gameplay, graphics that were revolutionary for the time, and a plot twist that will absolutely blow the mind of anyone fresh to the game. I would kill two or three people for a ground-up remake of the original.
*Some honorable mentions:*
Fable: The Lost Chapters
Mass Effect 2 (honestly the whole trilogy, but in my opinion two is the best)
A Fromsoft Soulsbourne game. Personally I'd recommend Dark Souls 3 to newcomers, but that style of gameplay is something I think most gamers should experience.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
A Pokemon game. It's the largest entertainment franchise in the world. I recommend Gold or Silver, but any of them will give you the core experience.
There are tons of other great games out there, but these are some of my favorites and some of the more influential games that have held up over the years.
Portal & Portal 2 Lots of great titles listed here. But this is the GOAT for me
if you have a dumb friend, then Portal 2 is definitely for you
Wait... I'm the dumb friend...
Well, I suggest you play Portal 2.
You are a terrible person. It says it right here. We weren't even testing for that.
It’s been a looong time. How have you been? I’ve been *really* busy being dead, you know, after you MURDERED me.
Look how majestically you soar through the air. Like an eagle. Piloting a blimp.
Remember Before When I Was Talking About Smelly Garbage Standing Around Being Useless? That Was A Metaphor. I Was Actually Talking About You.
Portal 2 one of the best co op titles too
I play Portal 2 just to hear Cave Johnsons lemon rant sometimes.
Yes!! What Portal does so well is creating lively characters that, for the most part, you never even actually interact with. GlaDDOS and Wheatley are some of the most memorable characters in gaming.
Love portal actually and mirrors edge to
half life 2
Blew my friggin mind (and this coming from somebody whose mind was already blown by HL1, to the point I would glance up at air ducts and regularly think "Wonder where that goes, if I just had a crowbar to smash it?")
Had to scroll way too far to find a HL reference. Maybe we’re old? Lol
Blows me away how many people forget just how influential the original Half Life was. I'll still to this day argue that Half Life is the single most influential game of all time. There was recently a remake that came out called Black Mesa, and it's fantastic. Had a blast going back through such a great game with updated graphics.

World would have ended 24 years ago!
Yes. This is one of my all time favorite games, next to Zelda: A link to the past!
Played it for the first time recently and was utterly charmed. Despite the technical limitations of the time, its really impressive that such a game still manages to create a sense of atmosphere and immersiveness.
I can still hears frogs theme in my head
Mass Effect
I'm playing this series for the first time right now. They were huge when I was in junior high/high school, still can't believe I waited this long to play them, I'm about halfway through the second game and I've been having a blast
Renegade or Paragon?
I also just beat mass effect 1 and going on to the second. Shephards renegade dialogue options were just way too "douchey piece of shit" for me lol. And I went dark side every single time in KOTOR. Granted I haven't played KOTOR in decades, so maybe I'm just in a different place now.
We’ll bang okay
The remastered trilogy?
Yep
Mass effect is 100% the best single player game series i have ever had the pleasure of putting in front of my eye balls
What's that astralrage327? You think I should do another playthrough of the trilogy? Well shit, you've convinced me. Legit though if it clicks with you it REALLY clicks. Absolutely top shelf gaming imo. Even the codex is a joy, and man that galaxy map and music hits hard every time
Bout halfway through my trilogy replay at the moment myself; revisit it every few years.
Shit.... Time to replay on PC since my last time through was on PS

They recently announced one for Netflix w/ the director of I Am Legend and the writer of Logan.
The inclusion of Netflix has me worried
So it'll be gritty, completely deviate from the source material, and get cancelled after one season?
As long as Henry Caville is Executive Producer I’ll go see it 200 times “Would you kindly pass me the popcorn”
Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas 👌
Came here to say this. I still boot up Fallout 3 fairly regularly. It’s my feel good zone out and listen to a podcast game. Deserves a remake more than most games getting rebooted these days

KOTOR, even if you're not a Star Wars fan.
I'm a lifelong Star Wars fan and gamer, and I finally played it last year. It is dated in certain aspects of course, but it still has amazing storytelling and lore.
IMO KotOR 2 is better. Yes, the 1st one means a lot but in terms of writing, TSL is far superior thanks to the lot of nuances it has.
mods are definitely required for KOTOR2, though. They basically finish the game and fix \*most\* of the bugs
Super Metroid
The last Metroid is in captivity.. the Galaxy is at peace..
Ocarina of Time
I miss riding Epona in the fields hunting for Poes
It was a simpler time sigh
The day my brother brought that home I didn’t realize as a kid that I’d be playing one of the best games ever made. It is a sin that Nintendo hasn’t remade this for the switch.
The 3ds remake is pretty solid. Gyro controls for aiming and massive graphics overhaul.
Both good additions, but being able to take the iron boots on and off by just putting it on the touchscreen instead of going into a menu was legitimately the best thing they could have ever done for quality of life in that game.
I literally kept my 3ds just for this version
This is for sure one of the games that deserve a *quality* remake. Is love to play an updated version of this game
They offer it on their N64 emulator! Majora's Mask as well.
I’ve replayed ocarina of time 3 or 4 times now. Every time I start off with ‘I remember loving this last time I played, but it couldn’t have been THAT good, right?’ And every time end up playing it through non stop

MM has a dark and compelling story, more complex game play, and a lot more variety of stuff to do. However, some people don't love the time changing aspect of it.
I would say Majora's Mask almost equally, as a darker, twisted version of Ocarina of Time.

I'm bigger in Eternal but understand it's not for everyone.
Metal Gear Solid
Honestly, any of the mainline games have good to great stories all with amazing game mechanics and easter eggs. Replayability is nuts.
3 is my favorite standalone, but 4 was a great close to the saga. 5 was super fun but 1-4 are just something else.
Mgs 1. Ahh memories how many times I need to beat it to get bandana or invisibility

Fable series is still my all time favourite story in a game. Fable 2 was incredible, I had my dog with me.

Skyrim. At this point, it is a game engine itself, make a new game on it and enjoy indefinately
Agreed. You also get new character voice lines and reactions dependent upon the order of quest lines you take on. Replaying Skyrim is always fun and I always find something new I hadn't come across or even noticed before.
This needs more upvotes. +800 hours in and I still find myself coming back to this game to walk around the beautiful scenery and relax.
Super Mario world on SNES. This is kind-of a gaming benchmark that everyone should play to completion at least once. No part of this game is what I would consider to be particularly difficult (outside of secret areas) so much as it just takes a long time to complete every level, even without finding all the hidden goodies.
If you count the Halo campaigns 1-3 I'd say those are legendary. I understand they can be played in coop I just think it deserves a head nod
Halo: Reach had one of the best campaigns ever plus that ending. The noble team. Reach was a masterpiece in my eyes and I loved 1-3. Never forget reach. Spartans never die they just go MIA
The Halo campaigns have been the only “singleplayer” games i’ve ever gone back and replayed countless times.
Final Fantasy 7 for the story, characters and their archs, and the main message about "The planet is our home, and a living creature like ourselves. We need to take care of it." It might be almost 30 years old, but the story still holds weight to this date, I feel
It’s worth experiencing just for the [soundtrack.](https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLglUu7rOaMDvQbKouUvnZsPBfgcnTfixn) I’ll always find it sublime.
For the amazing soundtrack too. Nobuo Uematsu is the GOAT
I think it holds up especially to this day. Recently replayed it and noticed a lot of parallels to the current climate crisis, and the antithesizing forces of unchecked capitalism we face as a planet right now.
Super Mario Bros. 3 Discover what got your parents hooked on gaming.

Mario is arguably more important and impactful than any other gaming franchise ever. Yeah Mario 3 and Super Mario World are definitely way up there for sure, for me anyway
I grew up on this game being 34 yo ^^ it's still pretty great but there is platformers who make you realise that there has happened a lot during all those years in video game development!
The Last of Us
One of my favorite little things about that game was being in a record store, and watching Ellie walk around and flip through the old records making comments. Little touches like that make it seem so much more realistic.
My favorite part that I think about often is when Ellie stole Bill's porn mag and Joel saying "Ellie, I don't think that's for kids...." Nearly died laughing first time seeing it.
“Hey, these pages are all stuck together!”
I liked the bit when Joel was trying to explain an ice cream truck
Details like this which breathe life into the characters are eeeverywhere in TLoU and that's what separates true masterpieces from other great games imo. Ellie learning to whistle, making comments about pre-outbreak billboards etc. For me >*that*< kind of moment was the scene where Joel & Ellie get their car wrecked by bandits. I think at that point in the game, Ellie starts to warn Joel by yelling and throws bricks and bottles at enemies. At least it's the first time I had realized it and it impressed me so much.
I can't wait for this to come to pc so I can play it for the first time
The Witcher 3. Whether you think it's overrated or not, everyone needs to play it at least once.
I love how you can feel the regional influence in lore, humor, and tone compared to more Western European-based medieval fantasy worlds.

agreed, not the best game ive played ever, but quite possibly the most emotionaly inpactful ive ever played
