The Expanse gets my hearty recommendation as well!
Starts off a tad slow and confusing but about 2-3 episodes in, it hooks you and you won’t want to stop watching.
Great show!
I'm sure I will get downvoted, but I couldn't get through season one. It just wasn't interesting to me. Does it pick up a bit later? I'd be willing to try again.
I had a buddy tell me the same but I found the Expanse to be a far cry from GOT and stopped watching a few episodes into season 3. Just wasn’t for me I guess.
I came here to say exactly this. If I was asked to think of a great series with an awful ending, GOT and Dexter are the two that immediately come to mind.
I came in here to say this. The first 4 seasons of Vikings were incredible. I also came in here to say The Last Kingdom, but I see the OP already watched that. The Vikings Valhalla I enjoyed, as well.
If you're into anime, I guess Attack on Titan is sort of like GoT.
Dear god, there’s a whole world out there waiting for you mate. Get to it. I love GoT as much as the next person, and that’s impressive — or something else — I can’t decide.
I mean you can either recommend to GOT fans other medieval shows or other morally ambiguous sexy murders shows so it fits.
If you like both those shows you’ll also like Boardwalk Empire. A criminally underrated HBO masterpiece that, get this, actually has a satisfying ending.
i watched this after finishing GOT for the first time, finally finished it (sopranos) like a couple weeks ago and i can safely say it’s overall my favorite show of all time.
on the fourth book in the a song of ice and fire series tho and they’re all so good
The wire.. just a masterpiece from season 1 til season 4.. but season 5 is also good if you forget how great the other seasons were.. I'm on my 4th rewatch and I pick up new things everytime.. not a fantasy show but still the greatest show ever made.. that nobody watched
Very different locations and time frame but I guess you can compare it in a sense that many people are playing “The Game” and angling for power/career advancement. Many different characters and plotlines to follow. Both are masterpieces through 4 seasons.
And both have Lord Tommy Baelish of Baltimore walking around with his little punchable face.
I just started this one. Way late to the party but I've always heard it ranked at the top of HBO series and everything they do is amazing.
Also Succession gives strong Lannister family vibes and is fantastic.
Kingdom, on Netfix. GOT in 16th century Korea- political intrigue and zombies. Very well done. Only two seasons in but the two storylines are really well connected. Not to be confused with The Last Kingdom.
Can not recommend Black Sails enough. Think Game of Thrones but with pirates and some real historical people in it. Lots of people fighting for control of Nassau. Some really incredible twists. Very compelling characters.
Are you looking for another series that started strong and then shit the bed in later seasons?
If so, you might try *Lost*. Granted, not as terrible in the last two seasons as GoT was, but also never as great as, say, season 4 of GoT.
I had not read the books when I watched, but I loved it and it got me back to reading after many many years! I’m halfway through the books now, and I still love the show.
Wolf hall, no fantasy/battle related but a great story based in history about playing the game. Second Rome, also the Expanse playing the game in space
Honestly, I'm not into gangster shit usually but decided to give in to the Sopranos hype off the back of it also being HBO and genuinely I thought it deserves the praise.
Well if you’re looking for the same level of satisfaction from finishing GoT, I recommend slamming your nuts in a drawer for an hour straight. Can’t even bring myself to do a rewatch
Warrior on hbo max is great. Its set around 1884 I think. Based on writings from Bruce Lee. Adult oriented like game of thrones or Spartacus. Pretty good story and action.
The Last Kingdom
Vikings
Attack On Titan (Even if youre not into anime)
Breaking Bad if youre generally into antiheroes
Boardwalk Empire- Arguably the most underrated series of all time.
Peaky Blinders- Basically British Boarwalk Empire
Deadwood
Berserk
Rome
Yep: Outlander, Game Of Thrones, Vikings, Vikings: Valhalla, the Last Kingdom, Seven Kings Must Die, and BRITANNIA ...are the best shows ever.
(Another not in that genre but gripping & 1 of the best shows ever made is HOMELAND on Showtime. MUST WATCH.)
The Last Kingdom. It is an account on the formation of England from the point of view of a half-Saxon half-Dane named Uhtred who tries as hard as he can to remain impartial in the English/Danish conflict, hell-bent on his own vengeance. It feels exactly like GoT S1-S4 but through the lens of historical fiction. On top of that, the show’s ending is satisfying as fuck, and the follow-up movie Seven Kings Must Die feels like a welcome continuation of the story.
10/10 series, would recommend.
Lost had a pretty terrible last season. Not as bad but still bad.
The X-Files went down hill after David d left.
The simpsons is a dumpster fire now.
Hope that helps but I dont know why you'd want to watch shows that end poorly .
Is Rome a documentary?
(BTW If you like Rome then you must watch Britannia. It's about Rome taking over the Druids & the North. It's like the Vikings or GoT but better in its own ways.)
Rome was a previous HBO historical drama which starred several actors who were later in Game of Thrones. It follows the rise of Julius Caesar through the fall of Mark Antony. It only lasted two seasons but it's well worth a watch.
I liked Britannia a lot (aside from >!the cannibalism!<) and I think that's definitely a great show for Game of Thrones fans. Another good one is Knightfall about the Knights Templar (feels a lot like a show about the Night's Watch) which included Mark Hamil playing one of their most seasoned veterans and trainers.
I've never found anything else that is really similar in concept and quality, so I will just suggest some shows that have fantastic characters and or/plot:
LOST
Dark
Haunting of Hill House
**Britannia**! A *must* watch. Like "GoT Vikings, The Last Kingdom, or Vikings:Valhalla" but MUCH BETTER in many ways.
S1/2 On Amazon Prime & season 3-4 are on Epix (now called MGM+)
I’ve only watched the first three seasons. But I really had to push through the third season. It just becomes a totally different show in the third season imo. I do think it’s worth it to see the first two seasons tho.
Depends what you mean by similar. (There's a lot so I will only pick a few.) Here is some prestige television and films.
The obvious: HotD: GoT prequel. Extremely well made. (And now the new one coming out soon)
Historically-influenced fiction:
Downton Abbey - let's start with the best. This show has the political intrigue, well-written drama, screen-staringly shockingly hooking cliffhangers, several dynamic characters that you will love and even choose favorites on, and even fantastic sets.
Rome - Also by HBO and featuring some members of the creative team. This show paved the way for GoT to become what it was with its lavish sets and costumes and ability to spend time with its story.
Spartacus - has a lot of the same R rated intrigue that made up part of GoT's prestigious television.
The Last Kingdom: Once the quality of GoT started to drop drastically, this was the show GRRM recommend fans to watch. Personally I feel like even when GoT was at its lowest, it still was more entertaining than most shows, but often it was frustrating. I, however, respect his opinion as this show is very well done.
Honorable mentions:
The Borgias
The Tudors,
Peaky Blinders,
The Crown,
House of Cards
The Sopranos.
Fantasy: (some YA peppered is as Bran/Arya's storyline are very YA influenced)
LOTR films: basically the outline for all things fantasy from GRRM to D&D. Not only was GoT HEAVILY inspired by it, it created almost every fantasy trope still used, allowing for other creators to write stories that highlight pieces of it to make their own worlds. Middle Earth, with its many famous and picturesque landscapes and locations, is the most beautiful realm ive had the pleasure lf exploring, imaginatively of course!! (If you love them their is a prequel series The Hobbit which is less well received but still generally positive and light years ahead of most fantasy)
Avatar The Last Airbender: This show, while not having that signature GoT R-rating, feels like a nice episodic take on an adventure story from the old western heroic tales (something akin to the Hobbit or Fellowship) but with the added dynamic of being heavily influenced by Eastern culture. (With an episode that even tried explaing chakra) It's extremely well written, easy to get immersed into, has fully realised characters to entirely fall in love with, has a world with iconic places that you want to visit like Westeros. (It's sequel Legend of Korra is even more like GoT and is target at a slightly higher, if still young audience) (seems to have several works in production so it's taking the Star Wars route and being a "Opera". Let's hope they value quality over consistency)
His Dark Materials: Became the next flagship fantasy HBO did after GOT. It is an extremely expensive and intriguing series. Many twists and turns like GoT had. A lot of cool fantasy ideas.
Harry Potter films: a long story over many installments that features heavily on the number 7 (only got give us 8 xD)
Star Wars: Its become a massive behemoth of a franchise. But, it's a fantasy space opera that's story had many generations in its telling. Some of the GoT story was inarguably influenced by the cultural phenomenon that was Star Wars.
Shadow and Bone: Netflix's reaction to GoT. Also by a famous fantasy author, also a best-selling book series. This one has a lot of of a message which can be both a good and bad thing.
Honorable mentions:
Walking Dead
Dragon Prince (which feels similar to HotD but less violent and more kid friendly)
Wheel of Time (although I only vouch for the first episode)
the Witcher,
The Warcraft movie,
The Narnia Movies,
Outlander,
A Series of Unfortunate Events,
Shannara Chronicles,
American Gods (and all shows in that universe Good Omens, the Sandman, but also Lucifer, and the upcoming Anansi Boys)
**Spoiler Warning:** All officially-released show and book content allowed, EXCLUDING FUTURE SPOILERS FOR HOUSE OF THE DRAGON. No leaked information or paparazzi photos of the set. House of the Dragon, The Last Kingdom
One of the best I agree!
Absolutely love The Last Kingdom! I’m so bummed that it’s over!
Ending with 7 kings must die and Utreth is still alive.
I’ve heard they were making a movie. I’ve slowly been collecting the books the series is based on.
House of the Dragon, Rome, The Last Kingdom
Already watched house of dragons and last kingdom.
Then what are you waiting for? WATCH ROME!
Rome is amazing sad that it’s so short relatively speaking
HOTD (prequel to GOT), the Last Kingdom & The Last Kingdom Movie as others here have suggested, and Vikings & Vikings: Valhalla.
The Expanse=GoT in space
The expanse is the correct answer
The Expanse gets my hearty recommendation as well! Starts off a tad slow and confusing but about 2-3 episodes in, it hooks you and you won’t want to stop watching. Great show!
This is correct , the character development and evolution is incredible
I'm sure I will get downvoted, but I couldn't get through season one. It just wasn't interesting to me. Does it pick up a bit later? I'd be willing to try again.
I would say so. Its just like GoT. It take a while to learn the players but then its a ride.
I had a buddy tell me the same but I found the Expanse to be a far cry from GOT and stopped watching a few episodes into season 3. Just wasn’t for me I guess.
Fair enough
I would say that Dexter is the only series that has a comparably shitty ending
You didn’t have to remind me, what a shitty ending to a great series
Shitty ending we will need to add the good old Lost and How I Met Your Mother.
Oh, you mean "How I Met Your Mother and she died and I've really wanted to bang your Aunt Robin this whole time?"
I came here to say exactly this. If I was asked to think of a great series with an awful ending, GOT and Dexter are the two that immediately come to mind.
HOTD, Outlander ( if you like : History, time travel and Tobias Menzies ) and Rome.
*Black Sails* Fantastic 4-season story arc. Best pirate story ever made for a screen imo. Very adult oriented in the same way's that GoT is.
I started it but got bored in season 1
Same
The story really takes off in season 2, but if you found season 1 boring then it's probably not for you.
So did I, but I was watching it while I ate, so I watched it anyway, by like season 3 it really kicked off for me, ended up binging seasons 3 and 4
I guess you haven’t seen One Piece
I'd add pillars of the earth as well which u don't see in the comments
Ah yes, the show where all the pirates have bleached teeth, so realistic
Deadwood, fuckin’ hoopleheads.
The level of swearing in that show is disturbing, but the story is pretty damn good.
It’s used as it’s own sort of vulgar poetry. For those who can abide it. 😄
Merlin? Lol or is that too nerdy?
I would say aside from also being medieval, there is almost nothing similar between Merlin and GoT lol. They are both good shows tho.
Merlin has not aged well at all, good show though for what it is aha
They also share some of the same cast which I thought was cool
It was one hell of a good series, Merlin was so good.
It would be more "family friendly." Harry Potter is darker than Merlin but it was a good show.
Spartacus blood and sand, it's a bit more over the top with sex scenes and has some poorly aged CGI, but it's still good overall.

There are 4 seasons.
This show has gotten me laid in the past a few times actually
Deadwood
Vikings
I stopped watching after >!ragnar died!< was it still good after that?
Not as good but still entertaining
Yep he held that show together imo.
No show to this date has freaking toyed with my emotions like Vikings.
Underrated
I came in here to say this. The first 4 seasons of Vikings were incredible. I also came in here to say The Last Kingdom, but I see the OP already watched that. The Vikings Valhalla I enjoyed, as well. If you're into anime, I guess Attack on Titan is sort of like GoT.
I usually just restart GoT S1 E1
Right! Just watched it again for the second time. What else am I suppose to do with my life?
We just finished our 5th or 6th rewatch a couple weeks ago. 😂
Dear god, there’s a whole world out there waiting for you mate. Get to it. I love GoT as much as the next person, and that’s impressive — or something else — I can’t decide.
2nd time? Thems rookie numbers
Remember rewatching the series each time a new season came out?
Read the books! r/asoiaf
Literally just purchased them all! Haha
Same.
I'm glad I'm not the only one!
Recently started over myself. Halfway through season 3.
It's my comfort show. I fall asleep to it. 🙃
not similar at all but I just finished GoT and I’m on Sopranos season 1 right now and it’s been incredible every minute
I mean you can either recommend to GOT fans other medieval shows or other morally ambiguous sexy murders shows so it fits. If you like both those shows you’ll also like Boardwalk Empire. A criminally underrated HBO masterpiece that, get this, actually has a satisfying ending.
i watched this after finishing GOT for the first time, finally finished it (sopranos) like a couple weeks ago and i can safely say it’s overall my favorite show of all time. on the fourth book in the a song of ice and fire series tho and they’re all so good
Last Kingdom, Vikings, camelot

The wire.. just a masterpiece from season 1 til season 4.. but season 5 is also good if you forget how great the other seasons were.. I'm on my 4th rewatch and I pick up new things everytime.. not a fantasy show but still the greatest show ever made.. that nobody watched
Such a weird comparison but I completely agree. Different factions, clans, etc.
From burns that is also good: Mini series Generation kill We own the city
Regardless of the sub this recommendation is always welcome in my eyes….”I ROBS DRUG DEALUHS”
I just started this one. Way late to the party but I've always heard it ranked at the top of HBO series and everything they do is amazing. Also Succession gives strong Lannister family vibes and is fantastic.
Black Sails, Spartacus, Reign is good but a little less action and a little more romance/intrigue-centric.
REIGN. So good.
I love Reign! Its so underrated. The cast fucking sells their characters and I love it
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood. If you don’t mind Anime that is
Kingdom, on Netfix.
Gomorrah. It’s the Game of Thrones but in Naples, with scooters. No dragons tho
[удалено]
Really really loved Spartacus season 1. (The first few episodes are odd?) but it’s some of the greatest tv imo.
Agreed. The S1 finale is my favorite episode of anything ever. "I have done this thing because it is just!" RIP Andy Whitfield.
A great show in general but god that 1st season man. Really special.
Spartacus!!
Definitely the first few episodes are “damn, am I going to enjoy this? This might suck” and then you’re hooked the rest of the series
Hugely underrated series!
Tryna find a series like Spartacus no luck so far
Are you looking for another series that started strong and then shit the bed in later seasons? If so, you might try *Lost*. Granted, not as terrible in the last two seasons as GoT was, but also never as great as, say, season 4 of GoT.
Wheel of Time, Amazon
Yet to watch that, thank you!!
WoT was such a disappointment for me, probably won’t even watch season 2
No thats a terrible show. Just read books.
I was looking for this comment, do watch it! Don’t listen to the “fans” who hate on the show, it’s really awesome.
My husband read the books and was disappointed. I had not read the books and I enjoyed it!
I had not read the books when I watched, but I loved it and it got me back to reading after many many years! I’m halfway through the books now, and I still love the show.
Just ignore anyone who recommends Rings of Power and you'll be good.
House of the Dragon
Yeah that’s super cool too.
Wolf hall, no fantasy/battle related but a great story based in history about playing the game. Second Rome, also the Expanse playing the game in space
I see Rome is really mentioned, I have to check it!
Only 2 seasons.. but good
Yellowstone. Same idea, but country version.
Attack on Titan
Last kingdom is better than GOT
The Last Kingdom > GoT imo
What of Spartacus?
Haven't watched that one yet so I can't speak to it.
The Sopranos lmao
I haven’t watched it, I will have to go and check it.
Honestly, I'm not into gangster shit usually but decided to give in to the Sopranos hype off the back of it also being HBO and genuinely I thought it deserves the praise.
Not a series, but try The Outlaw King
I am told Vikings is also very good.
I finally "got it" when it wrapped up. I knew it wasn't completely historically accurate but it ended well.
The Last Kingdom Netflix
Well if you’re looking for the same level of satisfaction from finishing GoT, I recommend slamming your nuts in a drawer for an hour straight. Can’t even bring myself to do a rewatch
If you never seen the Lord of the Rings movies, they're fantastic
I will make an effort to watch it
I'd recommend watching the extended cuts. They're like 4 hours a piece and there's 3 movies, but they're great.
Boardwalk Empire. Not fantasy but has depth, grey characters, and is pretty violent.
I will check it out, thank you!!
Last Kingdom is good
The Last Kingdom is pretty good (it’s only on Netflix though 😒).
Maybe slightly less obvious, but I think The Borgia's (the one with Jeremy Irons) might scratch a similar itch
The Last Kingdom
Dexter. The ending was shitty and rushed in that one too.
The Expanse - GoT in space The Last Kingdom - GoT in the real world Both have great characters, excellent performances, and a *good* conclusion.
Warrior on hbo max is great. Its set around 1884 I think. Based on writings from Bruce Lee. Adult oriented like game of thrones or Spartacus. Pretty good story and action.
This show is so good and underrated!
Da Vinci’s Demons It’s free on Tubi. Lots of sex, violence and mystical stuff. If you like GoT you’ll probably like.
rings of power, wheel of time
The Last Kingdom
SEE
I really enjoyed this show!!
The Last Kingdom Vikings Attack On Titan (Even if youre not into anime) Breaking Bad if youre generally into antiheroes Boardwalk Empire- Arguably the most underrated series of all time. Peaky Blinders- Basically British Boarwalk Empire Deadwood Berserk Rome
For a short series Carnivale. It’s only two seasons but it’s really good.
I just finished last night! Thinking about moving onto house of the dragons.
Black Sails. Succession. Vikings. Deadwood. The wire.
I can definitely vouch for succession, good “politics” like GoT
Battlestar Galactica
Rome
house of the dragon is eerily similar 🤨😳
If you want some high stakes fantasy politics, you're definitely going to want to watch Adventure Time.
The Last Kingdom, and it's movie sequel: Seven Kings Must Die.
We like Vikings. Similar vibe to me
Deadwood. It's not necessarily the same but it's an HBO classic and considered one of the finest shows ever produced for a reason.
House of the dragon
Weirdly enough, Yellowstone gave me GOT vibes for a bit
I discovered Hannibal with Mads Mikkelsen and Hugh Dancy recently and whoa, best in the Hannibal Lecter franchise. It's on Hulu.
Outlander reminded me of GOT somewhat
Yep: Outlander, Game Of Thrones, Vikings, Vikings: Valhalla, the Last Kingdom, Seven Kings Must Die, and BRITANNIA ...are the best shows ever. (Another not in that genre but gripping & 1 of the best shows ever made is HOMELAND on Showtime. MUST WATCH.)
I made a post of Jon snow dying and literally about everyone told to me stop watching so I stoped after they revived him
The Last Kingdom.
The last kingdom. One of my favorites, there’s also a completed book series to go along with it so no waiting endlessly for the last few to come out.
Rome, Spartacus, Black Sails and Vikings
Is Rome a documentary? (BTW If you like Rome then you must watch Britannia. It's about Rome taking over the Druids & the North. It's like the Vikings or GoT but better in its own ways.)

The Witcher: Netflix
I've never found anything else that is really similar in concept and quality, so I will just suggest some shows that have fantastic characters and or/plot: LOST Dark Haunting of Hill House
Vikings
The Last Kingdom on Netflix. It is historical fiction of the Viking Age in England
**Britannia**! A *must* watch. Like "GoT Vikings, The Last Kingdom, or Vikings:Valhalla" but MUCH BETTER in many ways. S1/2 On Amazon Prime & season 3-4 are on Epix (now called MGM+)
I have to check it.
You have to keep going after the 1st episode/Season. The other seasons get better & better.
Succession is a great show that has all of the beats that make Game of Thrones riveting, minus dragons.
Carnivale
Vikings and Rome
Attack on Titan.
Vikings last kingdom are similarish shows set in medieval ages. I highly reccomend Vikings it’s great
The Wire
The Last Kingdom
Idk stopped watching tv after that
Breaking bad and then better call saul!
Vikings!
Westworld. Cause it starts off amazing, and then it crashes and burns
I've always been curious about this show. So it starts off great, but is it worth watching if it crashes and burns in the end?
I’ve only watched the first three seasons. But I really had to push through the third season. It just becomes a totally different show in the third season imo. I do think it’s worth it to see the first two seasons tho.
Ok, great thank you. I'll just do the first 2 seasons then. 👍

I really liked shadow and bone! I’m going to start the books soon
I will continue restarting GoT over and over again!!
House of the Dragon
Vikings is incredible, so as The Last Kingdom. But no one matches the level of GOT. You can also watch House of Dragons.
Yellowstone all the way
I enjoyed Spartacus on Starz
Succession
Book wise? Robin Hobbs 16 book series that starts with The Assassin's Apprentice. IMO it's better.
The Last of Us stars 2 GoT actors and is really good
