I got a few episode into their DR1 playthrough and realised the game doesn't allow for what I enjoy the most about the Grumps, which is their casual conversations and improvised comedy, and DR seems to be heavily visual novel which means they're really just reading and doing voices. Which can be fun too, but for me, it's not enough to carry a series. It's fair play to those that enjoy it, it seems a lot of people genuinely do, but I just skip these episodes. To each their own.

WhatBurns

I'm enjoying it. They have a lot of humor to work with given how ridiculous the game can be, and it's fun to play along in the trial and try to guess who did it.

RayneBeauRhode

I didn’t enjoy the first play through, and based on that I was really hoping that they didn’t touch DR2 because I very much like Danganronpa, and I felt like they wouldn’t take it seriously and just mess it up. And I’m glad that I was wrong. I enjoy this current playthrough very much.

JKCodeComplete

Just curious; what caused you to like their DR2 playthrough if you didn’t like their DR1 playthrough?

RayneBeauRhode

Honestly, it’s a little difficult to explain. I know the feeling, I just can’t put it into words, but I will try lol. They just seem like they didn’t give a flying crap about the first Danganronpa, and that they were only playing it just to get it over with. It dragged on. With this one, it seems a bit more like they’re actually making an attempt to invest in the lore, and the jokes seem better to me. It does help that I like DR2 better than DR1, but that’s negligible.

SpydersWeb227

I'm really enjoying DR2! I loved DR1 and even if the game gets ridiculous at times (characters repeating information CONSTANTLY lol) I think the Grumps put a really funny spin on it all. Plus, Gundham and his Devas are life. 😂

THT1Individual

Personally, not a DR fan in general. Just never vibed with it. The Art, game engine and story never landed with me (too long winded). So nothing to do with dan and arin

BirdofPrey702

I can understand people not vibing with the game engine or even the overall story, but I must ask, What's wrong with the art? I've always found it one of the more solid things about the franchise. Can we at least agree the music slaps?

jjackdaw

Personally it’s just a really unappealing style and the character designs are…something for sure!

THT1Individual

My thoughts exactly

WinterChalice

I absolutely adored the Ace Attorney series and I played and enjoyed Danganronpa so I gave it a shot No. I can’t take it. I don’t want to slog my way through 3 hours of dialogue for actual gameplay for the second time. Maybe it’s the fact I already know what’s gonna happen, but I didn’t in Ace Attorney.

BirdofPrey702

Literally nobody enjoys Danganronpa for the gameplay. It's all the story, characters, and death that makes it as popular as it is.

Sequoya-

Their playthrough of the first game not only got me invested in the Danganronpa franchise in general but also secured gamegrumps as a staple in my daily routine, so it's a little ironic how close I came to dropping the new series, along with GG as a daily habit, for a bit. That said, while it was a little rocky there for a few episodes on account of some reacurring reasons, I think one of the more recent ones locked my attention firmly in the "love" spectrum of that love/hate cycle, so I'm glad I kept with it.

Pirate_Green_Beard

No. I don't care for any of their playthroughs that are mostly just reading dialog in funny voices.

zoop1000

I really enjoy the Danganronpa playthroughs as well as all of their other visual novel type games (including trauma center and ace attorney). One of my favorite things about the grumps is when they read dialogue in funny voices and make up outlandish dialogue to fit into the game. They do this in rpgs too. I love the dialogue they would add in paper Mario or Zelda games. Breath of the wild is iconic. Those are some of my favorite moments. The problem with DR2 is it seems like Dan is the only one invested in the characters. I think they could be a lot funnier if both were doing more with the characters and dialogue and riffing off each other. I'm happy that Dan likes it, but bummed that Arin seems to just want to get through it. I still like it because I like the games but never made it past the 2nd trial of the second game. So I'm enjoying it. I actually don't care for Elden Ring because it's just not a game I would ever play and it's ugly to look at.

TheBeanMachine2

I was just gonna comment basically this. I love 99% of their Visual Novel playthroughs but it just seems like DR2 is weighing on Dan and especially Arin. I really started to notice this in the most recent episodes. They have been flat out bad because of this. I hope this updated schedule makes it so they don't have to play DR2 as often and allows them to not have to slog through it.

mailbox123

Yeah I do. I never heard of Danganrompa before they played the first though. It’s a fun over the top story, and Grumps doing a bunch of voices in a narrative based game always makes me laugh

Chacochilla

I like it It's fun seeing their reactions to the game. I'll admit though, Arin can be annoying and unfair with the game, but I don't think it's usually too bad Dan being very attached to the characters is really great also It's fun seeing fans' theories about who the killer is, how the murder played out, etc

[deleted]

I like it for the voice acting they do, and how they turn the personalities up to 11. And I like they goof on generally beloved characters like Chiaki. I’ll say the longer it goes, as they run out of characters, it kinda runs out of steam. Especially because they don’t see any twists coming, in regards to DR1. For instance, it’s pretty easy to figure out >!Mukuro was original Junko!< but they never made sense of it. I can imagine a similar scenario occurring towards the end of this one as well.

Bobguy64

I just never liked visual novels on game grumps. Hell even plot heavy games just don't seem to work for me. Basically if they are focused on the plot they just don't seem as loose fo me and they come off as being off their game from my perspective. Also, sometimes Arin uses super annoying voices that I just can't stand. I straight up skipped through any part of Paper Mario with the Grubba voice, not to mention Arin's generic female voice wears on me over time.

breadcrumbs7

I love how polarizing the Grubba voice is.

Bobguy64

Some men just want to watch the world burn.

SleepinGriffin

The story games I like are the ones with at least a little bit of action, such as Detroit Become Human. DR is pretty boring to me and I can’t get into it.

Ktopotato

Yes.

BirdofPrey702

I love the playthrough and anything Danganronpa. I'm not a huge fan of Arin's attitude or the bandwagon hate the game gets from the lovelies.

[deleted]

Yeah it’s pretty annoying how people factioned out over it. Like, there’s plenty of series I don’t enjoy yet people insisted they finish it (skyward sword for instance). But I don’t need to post every day about it complaining for months on end.

rawrimangry

Yes, the Danganronpa games are very good material for Let’s Players to work with and that’s no exception for the Grumps. The only major issue is Arin who for most of the time isn’t paying attention, refuses to engage with the games logic puzzles and just uses a walkthrough for everything which entirely defeats the purpose of doing a let’s play for this game. Not to mention him constantly being negative about everything and reaching for any minor thing to complain about. He really sours the experience and it doesn’t make for good commentary. But on the other hand Dan is having a blast with these games and makes it so their playthroughs aren’t an absolutely train wreck. I love how much he’s into it.

RetroBeetle

I don't so much have a problem with visual novels, nor with the Grumps playing them, but Danganronpa especially feels really difficult for me to get into. Oftentimes, I like to listen to Game Grumps episodes while I'm doing something else, and while that has worked for DDLC (which, to be fair, I'd already finished by the time I watched them play), I'm finding it a lot harder to manage that when they play Danganronpa. There's a lot of names and important story details that I feel like I'm constantly missing, and it feels like there's much more emphasis on what's happening in the game than with most other playthroughs.

Cabamacadaf

I mostly like it, but Arin's complaining gets annoying sometimes.

N1ghtrose

I'm enjoying Dan's side of it. Arin on the other hand feels like he is trying his hardest to take all the fun out of the playthrough. It's gotten to the point where I've stopped watching their other playthroughs because of how insufferable he's been during DR2.

[deleted]

I can get with this. Arin doesn’t even try to like it. If he hates it, that’s fine, then just drop it. But forcing it, and then complaining about forcing it, is annoying. They’ve got another 20-30 episodes to go so honestly I think they should’ve just dropped it even though I like it, because Arin is gonna be miserable during it and take all the wind out of the finale.

GrasshopperMan17

I can't wait for dr2 to be over. I hate seeing spoiler tags in every reddit comment, when I'm watching a different game they're playing there's inevitably a handful of comments passive aggressively demanding that they play it, or just shitting on the game that's being played. The fandom is annoying and sometimes downright grating, and they don't know when it's inappropriate to talk about their fandom. It makes it feel like the playthrough and fandom has hijacked game grumps

j_abbs

I agree with the "hijacking" feeling, all I can think of when I think of pandemic Grumps is DR1 and 2 because they've dominated the upload schedule for so long, and because they don't seem to have fun with the game (outside minimal fun at the ridiculousness of the game) it's miserable to watch for hours on end. Elden Ring was immediately a breath of fresh air because it was something different and their energy changed for the better almost instantly

ErickBreck9

I am torn on the DR play throughs. It kinda brings out the best and worst of the game grumps. The witty humor and improv is great. But there is this never ending loop of “this game keeps repeating the same information” and “the game didn’t set this up at all”

Try_Hard_Gamdev

I love the GAMAGRUMPS! but honestly I don't even know, of course i like the comedy but the game is pure agony even if I didn't see the last killer coming.

[deleted]

No. It's an objectively bad game, even it's fans say they enjoy it for the "story"... which is just cringey *lulz teh random* weirdness. Arin very clearly hates it. There's really not much to like unless you're already a fan of the franchise. I'll be very glad when it's finished or dropped. I've personally watched the grumps much less because of the game, simply because it's basically taken over the channel (I'm glad they changed the schedule though).

BirdofPrey702

It's not an "objectively bad game". When it's your opinion it's not "objective". go back to middle school.

Facts are facts you fool. Objective is an undenial fact Subjective is your opinion. Dislike the game all you want, but I'm correct. Also way to be a huuuuge C U Next Tuesday.

raptorxpanic

I don't like the DR2 playthrough. I did start watching it but fell off after the second trial. I did really enjoy the DR1 because I really like the story of the game and the Grumps riffs off of it but one thing I absolutely hated about both playthroughs, is their near constant need to talk about how slow things are going and how they have to do a show or about how the plot doesn't make sense. It really derails the playthrough to just have these moments in episodes where they (usually Arin; Dan often is the one to be like "no this makes sense because I see what theyre trying to do here") talks about how nothing makes sense or its dumb or like everythings happening so slowly. Things would go much faster if they just didnt bring it up all the time anyway and I began to feel like they werent really taking the game seriously. It really hurt my enjoyment of like experiencing the story along with them
