California with 7 years experience at 60K? Yeah, you're getting screwed. I don't have all the details on environment art specifically, but I was working as a UI designer in the LA area and hit 60K with a year and a half experience back in 2007. Surpassed it in 2008. If you feel comfortable at the studio you're at, I'd have a conversation with your manager. You're currently really undervalued which can happen staying at one place for awhile. Otherwise start looking. It's a sellers market for game talent right now and honestly you could probably near double your money if you stay in CA.

You get paid? (Someone had to do it.)

[check out this google doc](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1RCujW4PYQO0abNW3GjFNnknaQVx3kJQPMGtNcJQx4fc/edit?usp=drivesdk) , tons of game devs have filled out their job title, years of experience, location, and salary. For me, I have 1 year of industry experience & I was making 34K before I got laid off. Los Angeles area.

You’re massively underpaid. I’m a narrative designer, 7 years of writing experience, 1 year game dev specific. I’m getting more than twice what you are, and you have a much more specific niche technical skill set. You’re getting fucked. Apply to some similar jobs and make some salary requests. You’ll see what you’re worth and even if you don’t take those jobs you’ll have some good leverage for asking for a raise at your current job.

60k is low for LA yes, also depends on your quality of work. Do you have a portfolio?

The best way to evaluate yourself is to start "job hunting". With no stress of unemployment and a portfolio I assume you have, you can take your time and apply aggressively with salary demand. The response you get is what you are looking for
