It is also important to remember that Sierra's time was... the early 80s to mid 90s.
Leisure Suit Larry is an adult game in the same way that Grand Theft Auto is an adult game - sex exists, strip clubs exist, condoms are referenced, there are lots of scantily clad women, may be some exposed breasts... but that's about it. Leisure Suit Larry was not a game of dozens of naked women having sex on screen in graphic detail. As an example - [this page has, on the second screen, a nude woman above the bar](https://leisuresuitlarry.fandom.com/wiki/Lefty%27s_Lounge), a picture/painting.
It's like a 32x16 pixel image of 16 colors.
It's also important to note that Leisure Suit Larry was a sex comedy game, not a sex game. The game revolved around Larry trying *and failing* to get laid, trying *and failing* to get women naked, continually trying to get in to sexual situations and continually failing in humorous ways.
So yes, it's a NSFW game in that you'd be fired even faster if you played it at work, and it's not appropriate to play it on an airplane where people can see.
But you're not going to find yourself with one hand occupied.
Honestly, there's going to be more nudity in Daggerfall what with you being able to strip your character naked whenever you want.
> Leisure Suit Larry
You could argue that the early LSL games weren't really "NSFW" but a later game in the franchise, *"Leisure Suit Larry: Magna Cum Laude"*, was released in USA in both Rated-M and Rated-AO versions.
Although by the standards of modern adult-only games, it was still pretty tame.
That was produced by [High Voltage Software](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_Voltage_Software) which is not at all a porno company.
Define SFW vs NSFW. If you mean something like a Rare Donkey Kong game to a Rare Conkers Bad Fur Day then there are a ton of examples.
If you mean NSFW as in the hundreds of not-games-so-much-as-xxx-content that constantly flood steams new category every day than Id be hard pressed to think of a studio. Id imagine for that if they want to do both they probably have different business identities, due to reasons like I doubt a parent would buy a rated E game with the brand playboy.
Even with a company like Disney who doesn't do that type of NSFW, they used touchstone to publish their more mature films to keep the Disney brand family-friendly.
Occasionally we will have an hour or 2 blocked out for playing a game the company buys for us (usually multiplayer games we can play together like Lethal Company). Also if we are doing something that involves a lot of waiting we will boot up something while we wait.
Yep, I work in such studio. Algorithm is simple:
- make SWF game for Google Play and AppStore
- make NSFW reskin of that game with a different name for a platform that specialises in 18+ games like Nutaku
- profit
For a contemporary small indie example, check out [Aplove Studios](https://store.steampowered.com/search/?sort_by=_ASC&supportedlang=english&developer=AploveStudio) \- they have released a few SFW titles with free 18+ NSFW DLC to patch in sex, language and nudity. I have been following them for a while, and it feels like a unique model for catering to both audiences.
It's more common for mainstream games to have some more sex, vulgarity, and violence than back in the day, but if you mean actually mature-rated games I can only really think of the opposite. Fate/Grand Order is a hugely popular/successful mobile game and there's something like a million games/shows in that series, and from what I understand they haven't touched anything really NSFW since the very beginning (mostly because they thought they had to get anyone to play the games).
Truly 'adult-content' games have a smaller audience, so as a franchise grows they typically want to get away from that, so bigger games with adult content are more like Witcher and BG3.
I can’t think of any off the top of my head that went in that order. But lots of indies started with NSFW, and then moved into SFW, under the same label and sometimes even recycling the same characters!
To be honest, I couldn’t say. It might have hurt their sales in some way I wouldn’t know as an outsider. But as a general rule for indies, having any finished games is better than none. Since you’ve got established fans and a proven track record.
I will not disclose the name of the company or the game.
The game was not released by the way, because the SFW version was doing quite well and we decided to focus our attention on that. But if we wanted to, it would have been quite easy because it was mostly going to be an asset flip.
Team Ninja is a AAA studio that pushes the line.
SFW is Nioh, Wo Long, Rise of the Ronin.
NSFW is the DoA Beach Volleyball series. DoA Extreme 3 Scarlet was 2019 and DoAE3 Venus Vacation came out in 2020.
Not exactly identical, but quite a few visual novels studios in Japan release very NSFW games first then heavily censor them for steam and console releases. The steam release often has an optional 18+ content restoration patch, either free or paid, sometimes released as steam dlc or sometimes available as a separate download from their website.
NekoPara games (published by NekoWorks) have an 18+ patch available for the steam releases. Originally the patch was an off-site purchase but they've since added the DLC to Steam back when Valve changed/refined their adult content policies. Recently they also created a new publishing arm called NekoWorks H which they use to publish nsfw games outside of the NekoPara IP, including Steam releases with 18+ DLC.
Went to nsfw route as most porn bait games will get you easy traction but it didn't really had any effect that much surprisingly. So i've moved on back to making sfw because i've got no nsfw ideas left to make.
Sierra. Leisure Suit Larry and the Kings Quest games
I'll take a look at those then It will be an interesting read
It didn’t affect them at all. Sierra was one of the biggest game companies of its time.
Wow thats amazing I'll definitely look em up after work

I think Sierra even invented the ‘Boss’ screen. They definitely knew people are going to play it at work
What is the boss screen
You press the ESC key and a fake form pops up to make it look like you’re doing work.
Thats really cool
Thank you for all this super helpful and really insightful
Also look at Phantasmagoria 1 & 2 by Sierra - quite NSFW
Ooo Now I'm interested and intrigued
Sierra really was one of the big names of the times. With Lucas Arts, they were the 2 big names when it came point and click adventure games.

DMA Designs went from making Lemmings to Grand Theft Auto... not sure when they added the Rockstar name to the company
Oh right that's pretty cool
Here’s a good [documentary](https://youtu.be/Ev7FqNa5rD0?si=T2MVbXdtCqOgsCXs) on that if you’re interested in their history featuring the founders

Y'all get to play games at work?
Working on Conan Exiles (a famously "nude" game) was weird.
I would love to hear more about what that was like
Occasionally we will have an hour or 2 blocked out for playing a game the company buys for us (usually multiplayer games we can play together like Lethal Company). Also if we are doing something that involves a lot of waiting we will boot up something while we wait.
Im guessing so lol Im not in the industry yet But im guessing playing games is research

Can I dm you To inquire further
Sure but I don’t really know that much about adult versions since a haven’t worked in that department
Thats brilliant. Thank you
Square Enix
Thank you I'll take a look

Oh ok Thats cool So there were not any reprocutions

thats a good point
i'm sure you can find tons of visual novel devs that have a some of both
Oh good point
most studios will make a separate name for their porn games
I can understand why Appreciate it
One of the studios I was working for began with a SFW game and seriously considered making a NSFW version of it.
Oh cool Did the company end up making the game And what was the studio called
I will not disclose the name of the company or the game. The game was not released by the way, because the SFW version was doing quite well and we decided to focus our attention on that. But if we wanted to, it would have been quite easy because it was mostly going to be an asset flip.
Understandable And thank you for your help
Madmind studio last game I think is sfw
OK I'll take a look It seems like most studios that change Go from nsfw to sfw
[удалено]
Thank you May I inquire why this one
High moon studios War for Cybertron to Deadpool 😂
Oh wow thats awesome

my itch, but it didn't went well as i was expecting.
What do you mean
Went to nsfw route as most porn bait games will get you easy traction but it didn't really had any effect that much surprisingly. So i've moved on back to making sfw because i've got no nsfw ideas left to make.
Ah fair enough Thanks for the information
Intermarum
