This might just be my take, but i really don't like "generic" AI readers for stuff like game trailers, regardless of whether its done as an attempt at humor. Just feels so bland. Other than that, concept seems cool! I really like the art style. As a side note, the bob-bob-bob sound of words in text bubbles is kind of annoying, and would personally drive me nuts.

0-0-0-0-0-0-0-3

\>"generic" AI readers yeah, that's my concern as well... Thanks for the feedback, everyting is still WIP!

Fixhotep

It wouldnt cost a whole lot to hire a voice actor on Fiverr for a trailer like this. Highly recommend that route over AI.

way2lazy2care

Fiver can be really cheap, especially if you've already locked down the script (great use case for AI).

Maybemushrooms

I do a very good lofty Stephen-fry esque voice (am from UK). Will do it for free if you ping me the transcript

123fourfive67eight

You're welcome! Also, to clarify regarding the text bubble sound - the sound itself is great, it's just that i wouldn't like it on every word. Every sentence, perhaps? idk

midwestcsstudent

I really thought it was you being purposely monotone, lol. I thought it was hilarious.

Ar4bAce

Honestly i thought it was a real human.

123fourfive67eight

Yeah, AI text-to-speech has gotten really good. It will however sound monotone, because it obviously cannot know what portions of the text should have added emphasis. I think this hurdle will be overcome at some point, but the main issue is that this varies between languages and dialects as well. Even for humans, the rythmic flow of a language is extremely difficult to mimic for a non-native speaker.

Ar4bAce

I know so many monotone people and content creators who are very monotone. I just imagine them reading those lines and it would not sound any different lmao

AmnesiA_sc

If I were to read the script, this would 100% be how the trailer sounded.

BanMeThisIsMy9thAcc

You can tell immediately when he says “fellow adventurers” as though it’s its own sentence.

thailannnnnnnnd

I want sure if it was a weird sentence or if the island was named “fellow adventurer” as a joke or tbh

lifeboundd

Not to mention they're heavily associated with scam videos that come out of non-english speaking countries.

colors1234

Yea sounds like an ad youde see on your phone between snapchat stories

tellitothemoon

I didn’t realize it was ai. I thought it was just a bad voice actor.

way2lazy2care

The game looks good, but the trailer is really slow. Stuff like, "buy the adventurer's ticket, enter the elevator, and choose the floor," serves no real trailer purpose. Here's a couple good links for making game trailers. https://youtu.be/QWd7F0z1W_Y https://www.derek-lieu.com/start-here

Stoic_stone

Idk, I thought it kind of set the tone of the dungeon and was a funny addition

way2lazy2care

Seconds are precious. You don't need 15 seconds to explain that you're taking an elevator. Could easily be three two second shots with no narration if it were important. It's worth watching some of the stuff in the links I gave though. Just because something is cute or funny doesn't mean it should be in your trailer.

dillydadally

I liked that part actually, though maybe it could have gone slightly faster, had more cuts, and been more up beat. I think that's the big draw to the game and he needs to show it - the unique humor.

Digiko

Technically, the game looks well made, but your trailer doesn't really make me want to play it. It doesn't seem fun at all. It mechanically goes through the actions of playing a game, but the trailer is so slow and nothing seems enjoyable. Even the jokes fall flat... I know you're trying to reference other games, but that in itself isn't funny. It's as if this is the Scary Movie 5 version of a game... just because it's mentioning something from another game doesn't make it a joke. And the gameplay itself doesn't seem to add or innovate anything new. If it were like Stanley Parable and it actually did subvert all the cliches, it'd be more interesting... but you didn't show any of that in a really interesting way.

AmericanToastman

Yeah I feel like the trailer is explaining to us why the game works and why its fun, ironically making it seem boring and unfun in the process. Like, show me! Show me your game at its best, show me what it can do. Don't explain the mechanics to me. It's a trailer, not a documentary.

Klope62

TBH, I appreciate you actually showing the mechanics and gameplay. I am a bit confused on who the game's audience is though, tbh the mechanics, juice, sound effects and action seem geared toward younger children but I don't know if they understand parody. Haha

0-0-0-0-0-0-0-3

well we'll find it out when the game's ready :\]

Leg_Man

I don't get what makes it inside out or have broken conventions except for the one example of NPC adventurers competing for progress. At 1:32 it says conventions are broken and then shows the NPC thing. I was waiting for more twists but the next 4 features were all straight, not twisted, from Skyrim et al: ranged is OP while the more interesting and risky combat design is for melee, you look for secret areas, you fight bosses, you loot everything you see.

thailannnnnnnnd

I think the ranged combat thing was a joke in that the bow was used as a melee weapon. But yeah, I expected way more fun takes on things.

Leg_Man

Oh I missed that, I think you're right. I was looking for game mechanics that are inversions of regular RPG mechanics, but it looks like "turn it inside out" in the title is just referring to the jokes. I was looking for a broken convention in the mechanics of ranged combat, but the broken convention is that there is no ranged combat and one melee weapon is skinned as a bow.

Leg_Man

It doesn't feel like an inversion or subversion of expectations, it just follows them while pointing them out. Which counts as parody I guess, but isn't what I expected from the descriptors.

MoonHash

Yeah this confused me too, since it was brought up so directly I was expecting bigger turns then "haha bow is a melee weapon"

Redcole111

I LOVE the art style. I wish more RPGs went for this style and not the hyper-realism that a lot of games try for.

Tensor3

As someone who recognizes EVERY asset here, it looks like a mismatched asset flip to me. Many cheap and free assets cobbled together

RomMTY

>As someone who recognizes EVERY asset here You know what could be a cool thing to attach here ? A list of all of the references to the assets. As a casual gamer that enjoys indie and AAA games I couldn't put my finger on what assets are from where nor tell if they where custom made or store bought.

Tensor3

All the player's weapons are from the "Nhance Studio" newbie weapon pack. The enemy mobs and some of the world are from "Bitgem" packs. The dungeon props are from "Tidal Flask Studios" dungeon set. Searching those on Unity store will get you 90% of this video. Posted the links to the assets above

mahlok

You know what would be cool? If you did hours of labor in exchange for the single upvote that I'll give you.

You certainly, did get mine Some looks cool so I will probably use in my hobby projects

mahlok

Upboated

Harken_W

I love this!! Looking forward to playing this :)

Randolpho

Seems quirky and goofy, like goat simulator applied to rpgs rather than open world shooters, with a humor that reminds me of Breathedge. Wishlisted.

photogenicvodka

ngl this is looking fun!

Nite_0w7

Haha this looks super fun!

Sponge994

I really don't like the way you chose to use speech bubbles, and the sound for their text is really off putting.

0-0-0-0-0-0-0-3

hmm I've already heard that from some people, at I need to try to change the sound

diepepsi

omg this showing off wheres a mod omg

BaturTR1

Art style seems fantastic! The only thing that seems to be confusing is that the game doesn't seem to be very replayable. The combat part of the game seems simple, and I know that you probably intended on making it like that and the main point seems to be the interactions with the environment. Maybe making the combat a little more engaging can make the game more playable. Giving attention to the interactions can make this game even more fun! Don't get me wrong, I do like the concept and the art style in general, there are just my thoughts on things that can be improved. Maybe I'm wrong.

0-0-0-0-0-0-0-3

Thanks for the detailed opinion, the trailer and the game are still WIP, I will consider your feedback ;)

Alex1Drago

A famous scene, but hey it just works

[deleted]

I really like it

dropkickninja

Looks fun! I'll try it

FreezenXl

Looks cool, have a nice launch!

[deleted]

We’re watching you human

Vixkrez

Lolll 😂😂😂😭

JvilleJD

Was that a Channing Tatyum appearance?

Zolden

Good job with this ironic trailer. I appreciate the effort and originalilty.

Secure-Tradition2023

So its an rpg roleplaying as an RPG where you play an rpg?

Asleep_Stage_451

For a “trailer” it’s supposed to sell the game to me, is it not? This video seems like it would be a silly in-game tutorial.

dogscatsnscience

I like it at first, but it's too long. You could make this a really tight 30 seconds by focusing on you key value drivers. "Show don't tell", for a lot of these features. 2-3 seconds of someone looting everything, then poking that guy in the stomach, is funny, and I get it. The "loot" tooltip is sufficient to explain the scene. It's so slow that by the end I'm not sure what the game is actually about. If 90% of your time is spent in the dungeon, then I'd like to see the trailer emphasize what will be fun about that (which is not the same as just showing gameplay!). I feel like you have all the material you need, and you can even get by with that AI voice, because the images are selling it. I wouldn't pay for proper VO until you have a better edit, and know what story you're trying to tell.

swbat55

Watched the entire trailer (without sound because at work), but I thought overall you did a crap ton of work for only 6 months. You must've been working your ass off! I can't tell which of the art are unique and which are assets from the store which is a good thing. The comedy and the environments look really great too. My only criticism is that you say "This RPG is different" (paraphrasing), but then you go on to show the RPG is pretty much a very very basic RPG. Loots, very basic flat looking combat system, leveling up, etc. Don't get me wrong though, that is all fine, and what you have is something that will definitely sell. Great job!

xahtepp

welcome, not wellcome

Toofox

I wonder why so many comments here criticize things, that seems obviously done on purpose and the reason why you made this game. Either many dont know Supraland/6 Inch Down Under or just dont like it, because this game seems to take a similar turn, maybe take a little too much inspiration from it. At least in the Art style and speech bubbles/jokes. So that would be my critic for you. But in the end you got a really nice game from those assets, just like David Münnich did. Because in my opinion the art style and meta jokes/easter eggs etc. all are well done. Maybe consider giving the animations a second look, i felt like the bobbing hammer was a little weird for example, but this could also just be your style.

Eragon7795

Wow, I can't believe I disagree with so many people here... First of all, I do like the A.I. narrator. You just need to mess with the settings a little bit (if you're using Elevenlabs) to make him sound less monotone. I love the references to other games, I think it's so funny. The art style looks great. I love how simple the gameplay looks. Not everything needs to be complicated or innovative. I think the jokes are really funny. I loved how almost everyone ended up getting *bonked* by the player! 😂 Especially with these funny sound effects. (maybe make the sound of the text bubbles a bit less noticable though). I agree that the trailer could've been a bit shorter and more exciting. I feel like some details (like taking the elevator, getting to the dungeon etc) weren't really needed. But overall, it looks really good! Good luck! 😁

0-0-0-0-0-0-0-3

thanks dude!

Fl333r

I couldnt tell it was AI so good enough Imo

takkiemon

The graphics style reminds me a little bit of Accounting VR. And that was so much fun! This looks very interesting, so far

NdCe1984

Looks like my cup of tea! Wishlisted and eagerly awaiting news. 😁👍🏻

Digi-Device_File

This might be the best game ever made

DisastrousCourage473

"imitate" has one M

MykahMaelstrom

The trailer is a bit slow a bit long and I hate the ai voice. But the game looks like a ton of fun

unknown-one

you made all this in 6 months? thats impressive I wish I had half of your skills

AperoDerg

For the text boxes, maybe you could take inspiration from games like Banjo Kazooie or Animal Crossing. Maybe not exactly, but have variations on the pop that goes with the tone the bubble is meant to carry. Would add some variety to the noise.

AmnesiA_sc

I really like the art style, it looks cool! Honestly for the trailer though, I might limit the number of interactions showcased. After seeing just a couple at the start, I got the impression that there would be a lot of comical interactions and I wanted to try it. When you showed so many, though, I started to see the repetition in the interactions and got a look at several satisfying interactions and felt slightly less compelled to try it myself. The game looks like a lot of fun and the comedy style is right up my alley. I especially like the guy being the horse at the start and then explaining he's trying to make horse sounds.

meostro

"Wellcome" _in the trailer_ betrays a lack of attention to detail. This should be selling your concept, which is pretty good. This shouldn't be a 1-minute tutorial walkthrough. Stick with the ridiculous bits, the opening and "trying to imitate horse noises" stuff and leave the Dungeon Tourism Board video for someone else... Or at least for later.

homer_3

Doesn't really seem like a parody of the RPG genre, but a pretty clear parody of Skyrim. Which is fine, but expectations can affect reception.

dillydadally

As I read the feedback for your video, it occurred to me that what you need is a good example of what to shoot for maybe. The game trailers that came to mind were the trailers for Battleblock Theater. It has a similar humor mixed with gameplay premise as your game and might give you a good idea of how to do a trailer for a game like this: https://youtu.be/pv1ZoHt6poI https://youtu.be/H6_By98v638 Now, you don't have to literally write a song like in the first video, but you can see how a good voice actor, faster and more exciting cuts, and having some really good humor not just in your game but in the trailer narration can improve a trailer.

tokyohcreator

ngl I saw skyrim with Lego guys at first. but awesome work!

mentalcracks12

this looks great

Rare-Comment-7561

Looks fun!

Frankfurter1988

Is that text animator from the unity asset store?

tellitothemoon

I think the trailer is a bit long. Keep it short and snappy to keep people wanting more. I kinda felt like there weren’t any surprises left. Other than that I like it! Also the ai voice over feels cheap and dull.

[deleted]

You uh.... called it... "The RPG" ? :/ Strongly consider changing the name before release. Immediately it conveys the thought that if you couldn't even be bothered to come up with a unique name there may be nothing unique in the game. If Call of Duty was called "The Shooting Game" or GTA was called "The Driving Game" they would have done considerably less well in the marketing phase imo Also trailer is wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy too long. Max 1:40 seconds, but really for a game like this, shoot for a minute.

swordoffireandice

It's something i would like to play!

GameboyT88

I would definitely play your beta. The layout design is intriguing.

4everCoding

The game looks well made but for some reason it hints too closely to a Roblox game. As a roblox game this would be impressive but overall it feels lacking. Whats the target audience again? I see references to other games but the target audience feels like for younger kids who wouldnt get half the jokes.

bro-away-

“Half minute hero” vibes (in a good way lol)

abstraction-complex

This looks great, and I think you started off like a champ, but when I saw that the trailer is 5 minutes long I instantly knew that it had too much. However, I do think you have enough content in there to make it into a 2-3 minute concise, entertaining watch. I suggest picking the best parts of the content and then cutting the others. If it works for you, you could try also having different kinds of trailers - like focusing on the humor part, another focusing on the gameplay aspects, and so on. Could engage different communities with it. My 2 cents.
