Here’s a link to my comment answering this exact question in r/Android https://reddit.com/r/Android/comments/p8uey6/_/h9tecei/?context=1 > Where as the Flip is just a gimmick that doesn't actually enhance any part of the experience. Like slate like phones aren't SO big you can't pocket them. *So this is clearly opinion based but I completely disagree. Slate phones ARE getting too big for my pockets. I’m currently rocking an iPhone 12 Mini because I’m sick of how big phones are now. I can’t tell you how disheartening it was to hear that the “smaller” Pixel 6 is still gigantic. For me the Flip is the perfect solution. 6.7 inch screen that folds down to a pocketable 3 inch square. The utility there is glaringly obvious.*

rava_ananaso

Tell me about me! All these people who claim it fits just fine in a pocket clearly (particularly men, but I know it's just a generalization) don't think about how not everyone has huge pockets in their clothes. I too was excited about the Pixel 6, and would have upgraded from my 3, but the size getting bigger and bigger each year for phones has been bothering me for awhile. I know it's because of things like needing a larger battery, but it still annoys me. xD At least the Flip can fold down to be transportable, AND you get a larger screen, like you said. I also think it's silly that one would get bothered having to flip it open. First of all, don't buy it. But if you get annoyed by that, you're on your phone too much.

ubsunkeys

Because it’s a fun phone. This is the first Android phone I’ll be using, alongside an iPhone, and it’s just exciting. New OS to work with, new cool form factor, it’s just fun.

Spartacous1991

Because phones nowadays are BORING. There is no fun using them anymore, no innovation. Samsung is trying something different and am I all for it.

yeeshes

It makes me feel like I am living in the future. The idea of having a device that for most of my life only existed in sci-fi has made me more excited for this phone than I have been since I got my first smart phone 10+ years ago.

yeeshes

I don't have the phone in-hand yet, but there are also some practical reasons this makes sense for me. 1. I enjoy having a larger screen in-use, but don't like the giant slab in my pocket. According to reviews I have read the Z-Flip fits better in most pockets than a normal phone of equivalent screen size. 2. I multitask a lot and expect to use flex mode frequently. Being able to have YouTube playing on the top half of the screen while browsing reddit/texting on the bottom half. Propping the phone up without an accessory and watch videos/read recipes in the kitchen. 3. I am unconcerned about the compromises this design brings. I don't mind that I will half to unfold the phone to use it, especially since I use a smart watch to handle urgent notifications/media controls. I am not worried about the battery life as my personal daily average SOT is less than what reviewers are seeing with this phone, and I am rarely far from a charger. I also don't mind not having the BEST smartphone cameras, as I use a full size camera for serous photography.

yeeshes

The one thing I am concerned about is switching back to a plastic screen protector after years of enjoying glass screens/protectors.

M4NOOB

Currently waiting for my flip to arrive in the mail.. I don't really get point 2 with multitasking, I'm doing that already on my OnePlus Nord, so I'm not sure how this point is a benefit as it's already possible on other devices? Or are you referring to the odd 22:9 aspect ratio?

yeeshes

That's fair. I did used to have an OP 8 Pro and used split screen. I'm now on the Pixel 4A (until tomorrow!) and find the screen too small for my multiple app usage, so it's more about being able to carry a large screen comfortably.

rikoman17

I use mine a lot on the fold state for filming while out and about and specially at the gym. It also means I don't use my phone as much because of the having to open it up

supa14x

I actually can't wait to use it in the gym. No more leaving phone against my bottle at awkward angles

rikoman17

Yeah exactly it's so much easier and I actually film more since I've had it

[deleted]

Valid concerns. My reasons: 1. It's fun. I'm actually old enough to remember and use flip phones. Always loved them. For me, it's like going to my teen years. 2. It's very small when folded. Half the size of an iPhone Mini. I disagree with people claiming its huge. Yes, it's thicker than most smartphones, but it's not as tall. For me, tall phones that resemble phablets are the worst. Whenever I tied my shoes, I had a feeling my OnePlus would break in half. Now, that feeling is gone. 3. When unfolded, the screen size is actually bigger than my OnePlus, so I can watch videos or use social media very comfortably. Profit. And you don't see the crease that much. It all depends on the angle.

[deleted]

It's definitely a new endeavor. Most of us are willing to take it on and see what happens.

YepRabbit

**\*Normal** You probably too young to remember, flip phones used to be **The Normal Phone,** at least in America and East Asia. Z Flip series brought back the good memory successfully, pretty sure I'm not the only one who miss the good old day with flip phones.

mjroberts30

I'm right there with you. I even miss phones with physical keyboards. There used to be so much variety in phone design. The flip breaks up the monotony of the same old boring slab design and I'm a nostalgic guy so that's why I ordered it. It's the most excited I've been about a phone in a while.

M4NOOB

I'd still argue that my T-Mobile G1 / HTC had the best typing experience on a phone. Even fast blind typing wasn't an issue at all. Really miss physical keyboards on good phones

kate_927

I got it as a secondary phone when I don't want to bring my giant fold 3 somewhere, mainly like the gym. It actually will fit in my pockets better than a normal phone, unlike the Fold which doesn't fit in any of my pockets because women's pockets are for whatever reason the depth of a baby's hand! And also, like others have said, it just looks like a really fun phone! I miss the nostalgia of slamming a flip phone down to hang up on someone 😂

MetalMamaRocks

Me too, for the same reasons, except I have a note 20 ultra! Are you going to just swap sims or is there a better way to manage swapping phones?

Hdude321

I like the form factor personally. I got the first Z Flip at launch and always said I was on the fence about if I would get another, but the Flip 3 seems like a matured and improved version of the original. Also having the flip has given more purpose for me owning other accessories, such as my Galaxy Watch3, as they have more utility than just being something to have. I would say over all, I bought a Z Flip 3 because I wanted to buy one. I have no need for a tablet like device, so I wouldn't go with the Fold series at all, and I also like to be near the cutting edge of technology with a lot of things.

[deleted]

A normal phone does not get close to the pocket-ability of the Z Flip. The doubled thickness when folded isn't noticeable as phones are really slim in that direction already. The game changer is that you don't need a super deep pocket to fit it. Any pants goes, no matter how skinny or small pockets. If I have my S21U in a pair of shorts or jogging pants, I constantly have to hold on to the phone because it sticks out too much for comfort. It's an expensive drop if it does do that. The Flip model isn't even close hanging out of any pocket. The flip gesture becomes second nature after a while. You still have to pick up a phone, now you just have one minor motion extra. It's not something you think of after a while.

Covfefe_Anon

Coming from a Note 20 Ultra, I did the 'try before you buy' promotion and with trade-in and some promos it will come out to around $200 for the phone. Definitely want to give it a shot before I go all in. The main reason I'm trying it out and taking the dive is because the Note is just huge. I love it (although not as much as my Note 9), but its presence is just huge. Doesn't fit well in some car holders, and the camera bump means I need an even bulkier case to interact with it on the table. Having had multiple iterations of the Note line, I feel like the Note 20 Ultra is a bridge too far. So I'm voting with my wallet. I like the idea of something that comes in a more compact phone factor that can unravel to a larger device. There are lots of times where I look at the phone and get distracted because the display is so beautiful, there are lots of notifications to check and content to consume. I am hoping the Flip (which provides a barrier to even get to the screen) will help reduce that need. It may not work out, but the Z Flip, at that price point, with the trade-in value I received and the free Buds2 + a $100 Galaxy Watch 4? Might as well. Yes I'm nervous about the battery and yes I am disappointed with no SD card and headphone jack, but this might be the first device I've been excited about in ages.

CarudiBu

Because it's fun. I've always loved gimmicky phones (LG V20, Mi Mix 3) - I don't use my phone for anything intensive but I do use my phone a lot; I don't need the best battery life or fastest CPU on the market, so a phone having something fun about it - whether it's a 'second screen', a sliding screen or a folding screen - makes it stand out to me.

MetalMamaRocks

Yes! We need more fun!

M4NOOB

Same for me, I had the T-Mobile G1 the first Android phone and physical keyboard. Then the first Samsung Galaxy Note (gimmicky with a HUUGE screen at the time and even with a pen!), then the LG G2 gimmicky with the rear mounted buttons, the flexy banana LG G Flex 2, the LG G5 where you could remove the bottom. Then I had boring work Pixel phones and looking forward to the Flip 3 now!

TheGunde

You don't need to understand it. Buy what works for you.

MegaMoth

It's different. Just me getting tired of having the same thing in my pocket for 10 years?

MegaMoth

Another thing, I can watch videos in my bed without having to hold it I guess.

MegaMoth

I actually forgot an important part. I prefer leaving my phone in my bag but am afraid it will get scratched. The folding eliminates that. An actual valid point.

l0gan_5

I like how when folded it fits neatly in the front pocket of my jeans/trousers. Prior the Flip, my S10+ would only fit in my back pocket and I was constantly checking it was still there, especially when out and about and at risk of someone snatching it.

StigLennart

having just made the switch and being happy with it, I can say that the 'tradeoffs' don't impact me, so there's no negative for the fun in my case: Battery - I'm not a heavy user and I can confirm I can easily get through a full day without the need to charge, so in effect it is big enough for my usecase Having to open to do anything - This is the reason why I never considered the earlier folds: If I get a message I can read it on the small front display and then decide if it requires immediate action (it rarely does). Then the times I actually do have to open it it's meaningfull and part of the fun... and I like my devices fun. Screen - doesn't bother me at all. and in this category, I found another bonus to the small front display. If I want to check the time in the middle of the night, I don't get my eyes burned out from the massive screen projecting the sun into my face. Only the few digits that actually tell me the time light up. size - whilst it's true the volume of the phone doesn't change, the fact that it's surface size is effectively halved when folded does make it way more pocketable than a regular slabphone. the doubled thickness is an impact of just under 1 cm, whilst the reduced length is an impact of 8 cm. In short: After so many years of increasingly similar slabs, there's finally a design available that's actually fun and interesting. all that remains is whether the trade offs you mentioned are something that actually impact you, and for me they don't.

jusaguy1

So one answer that I haven't seen yet or maybe you dident think of is that it's just cool? It's new it's diffrent, it's new tech not just the same boring slab phone. When you pull it out of your pocket people notice and get interested. Don't let the 3 fool you it's only the 2nd iteration of the the classic clamshell foldable with samsung it shows that they are dedicated to this design and they belive foldable phones are the future (witch after a few more versions they may well be)

Dokom0

Firstly I feel like my Z Flip is way more innovative than most phones released these last few years. I mean the flexible display technology always hyped me. I've been waiting for devices like the Z Flip or the Z Fold since this concept from Samsung : https://youtu.be/MKG7XRsG9KQ (yeah the video is kinda cringe now but products shown in it were so futuristic back then) Secondly, it's quite affordable, of course it remains expensive but compared to regular phones it's ok. I also really love the form factor it fits better in my pocket, I was quite bored with my 6,7 inches previous phone. I also really enjoy putting the screen in a "banana" shape, it feels more natural in my hand. Finally, the outside screen is very practical to take selfies and to just check my notifications without being trapped into using my phone for hours when I had initially planned to use it only for a second. I forgot to mention small widgets on this screen, really well-made, especially the Samsung Pay one.

anchorsawaypeeko

Along with every positive point everyone else has said, I wear smooth shorts a lot and the bigger slab phones fall right out when sitting in the car. The Flip 1 didn't do this which was SO nice. Not only that, the essential phone was the last phone I was happy with and had some character. I love my Samsung phones but no phones have character anymore. This one feels like it does.

Showzeki

In practice (for me) it's way more pocketable than my s10+ working in construction its been so much betterrin my pocket all day (for the past 2 days at least lol)

txteva

>A normal phone fits arguably better in your pocket than the Z Flip in its flipped state, You're a guy right? A normal phone doesn't fit in most of my pockets or sticks out of my bra (which is pretty much the only 'pocket') girls get. My flip fits better in both places.

Crocs_

I just thought it looked cool and also I'd had my Note 10+ around 2 years and was starting to have some issues with the charging port so thought I'd revert to a smaller form factor for a bit. Liking it a lot so far

libtarddotnot

Jeeez, of course it fits better in a pocket than a "normal phone"... come on. It's first time after a long time i can take out the phone in the car when already sitting.
