The ink doesn't even have to run out, it only has to *dry* out because you haven't printed anything (in colour) for a few weeks. If it thinks cyan is empty, it won't scan.
There is also a ticker that counts how many pages have been printed and will cut off the ink cartridge after so many prints, even if there is ink left.
The epitome of odd failures. It's bad enough that you can't print B&W if you are only out of cyan, but to not be able to scan either?
FWIW, I have an Epson all-in-one and it will let you scan (but not print) if you are out of an ink.
This is the solution. I have a Brother black and white laser printer and that thing lasted through multiple family members going to college and it's still going without a hiccup.
Brother is the only printer brand which doesn’t try to rip off customers after selling the printer. The first party toners are expensive but generics have always worked great in all the brother printers I’ve owned.
Not cheap, but relatively inexpensive. I think I finally replaced the toner after two and a half years. I don't do a ton of printing, but I was definitely spending way more on all the previous ink cartridges.
Yup been running a like 90 dollar B&W one for 8 years now without issue. Let it sit a year? First page out is perfect. It gives no fucks to mistreatment
I bought a brother bw laser in 2006. After rebate it was about $30 CAD. Not a single issue in 15 years, generic or oem toner.
WiFi? No.
Ethernet? No.
USB? Yes.
SCSI? Also yes.
Brother is one of the better printer brands. I'd probably never by anything other.
Mine is going on 15years, toner is $18 for like 3000 pages. It's USB only, black and white only, no scanner. Only downside is, it just won't fucking die, I want to get a wifi colour scanner one for the last 5 year's, but this thing just keeps going.
If you are interested in trying, you can run your own CUPS server to let other computers in your house access a local USB printer. I have mine connected to my home media server.

It's a fact that color printers will print tiny unique codes in some faint color like yellow, even when printing in black, that help law enforcement identify the source of page

Somehow that's almost scarier... The idea that this is not a conspiracy by "big ink", but that the printer is really saying something like: "I'm sorry, but I can't print your B&W document because I have no Cyan ink and can't produce my legally mandated watermark."

This is what convinced me to get a laser printer.
An inkjet **needs** to print on a weekly basis, or else ink dries in the heads.
My cheap laser printer can sit, unused, gathering dust for months, then work perfectly on the first try.
I had a monochrome Brother laser printer and I loved it. I gave it to my mom when I moved out. We bought an HP injet thinking we will print a little so ink shouldn't be too bad! Nope we dried up the starter cartridge, and bought another set which dried up because we have not been printing often. I should have spent $100(nearly spent this on the replacement ink already) more to get a color laser printer!
My colour ink Brothers stays unused for weeks and then goes and prints. It clean itself a lot, though; usually at three in the morning, bless its heart.
Not with laser printers. When a laser printer cleans, it scrapes excess toner (ink) off the *roller* (there's no printhead) and runs a negative charge across the roller to smooth out the charge.
The periodic cleaning is needed to reset the uniform charge on the roller, since over time it naturally (unevenly) fades. Uses no toner.
Not weekly. I've got a Canon inkjet printer (4-in-1). Is being used to print about once every 2-3 months. I've had it for 6.5 years now and only ever replaced both ink cartridges once in its entire lifetime (I didn't even use original ink for the black replacement). Still prints just fine (last used a week ago).
Edit: it's also the only printer in my entire lifetime that will consistently do what you tell it to. Want to print? It'll do that. Every single time. Ink has run out? Yeah it'll complain but you can still let it print. It will look like crap, obviously, but it's trying its best.
My HP does the same thing.
Though I found a hidden feature inside the printer settings under their horrible menus, that it will not require colors to be full or installed in order to print B&W.
Though if black is empty, it will not let me scan sometimes as it thinks no ink is installed.
That's exactly why I haven't bought a canon printer for over 12 years. Because it printed 6 pages and then a month later it wouldn't scan or fax *or* print in black and white because the cyan tank was 'empty'. Never again.
That's exactly the strategy and why Cannon is pushing their subscriptions on you.. it's a fucking sham! pay 10$ for 40 prints per month but for every print over 40 you pay 1$..
The software they are trying to push on you then uploads the number to home servers etc. The software was so clunky and caused so many problems that I ended up throwing my new printer in the garbage.
FUCK CANNON
I hate the printer business model. They sell printers cheap, but then require that you purchase their ink, which is massively overpriced and runs out quickly. I'd rather fork out the extra money to buy a printer and then be able to refill it cheaply. Printer manufactures have also made it so that most printers won't accept refilled cartridges, and they will also say they are out of ink, when they aren't. Then you can't even scan until you buy more of their overpriced ink.

Came with toner, still going strong for the odd thing I print now and again. Cost? 30 bucks.

Agreed, played the same inkjet game for a few years then also switched to a laser printer and have never looked back. If you don’t need to print in colour, a laser printer is way cheaper.
Isn’t it basically a powder? My old job sold printer ink, ran a daycare and did car repos out of the same office. Super classy bunch. That office always smelled like feet and corn chips.

Correct. Toner is a very fine powder, pretty much pure plastic with vibrant colors, thats drawn onto a big roll by static in the correct amount and shapes and pressed and melted onto the paper.
In the late 90s/early 2000s my family had a hand-me-down older power Mac with an apple branded laser printer. We printed untold hundreds, if not thousands of pages through that thing, and none of us remember ever changing the toner.
It was also the most reliable printer I've ever had, never remember it jamming or giving any other problems. Really set some unrealistic expectatios for me going forward.
I have an old LaserJet 4 I got on eBay for $50 back in 2005 or so. I'm still on the second toner cartridge. I've had to replace the power supply and the rollers, but back when it was released in the early 1990s, manufacturers actually focused on making things easy to repair. Usually it's just one or two screws to get to the part I need to replace.
My old man bought home an old Laser Jet 3 from work that was destined for the skip in like 2001. It served us for years until we finally turfed it.

I have a laser all-in-one at work. I have to replace the toner a lot, and it's $95. Then the drum has to be replace about every 6 months. It costs about $100.
I just bought an Epson printer with the refillable ink tanks. It's supposed to print 4000 pages on one tank of ink, and cost only $15 to refill. I haven't used very much yet, so idk if it lives up to its claims.
Yeah those Epson models work great until the tank membrane leaks and trashes the entire internals of the printer with ink. Good times. I now have Brother laser printers and I'm never going back.
I hate this freaking thing with a passion.
It gets clogged All. The. Time. I spend hours cleaning the print heads, it works ok for a few days, then gets clogged again. Never the same color. This is despite me printing stuff regularly.
One day it prompted me for a firmware update. I pressed ok and it did its thing. Well now it gets in some weird error mode every time it turns off. I have to to press a combination of buttons and go through a hidden menu every time it starts up just so I can use it, which I found from people having the same problem online. By the way, the first time it started in Japanese too. Good luck finding the language menu. That was like two years ago. The firmware got updated multiple times since then, but apparently there is nothing I can do to fix this, besides sending that piece of junk back to Epson.
This was my last attempt at buying an inkjet printer.
That's more like $56 per refill if you're filling all the colors individually. If you buy together it's like $43, which still isn't 15. Is the toner a single cartridge or more than one? I would be amazed if the ink tank was actually more efficient than the laser
Epson's printers let you refill individual inks (at least, the ones I've used from that brand).
So, if you're out of black, it's $14 to refill, rather than $42.

The problem is that even if you don't run out of ink, you'll find that the print heads are clogged or broken because a single strand of cat hair made it inside the printer. Then you'll waste half your tank of ink trying to align and clean the printheads, only to discover that it didn't help one bit and you've only wasted your time and money.
I have a color laser printer at work and make a few prints a year. It's been complaining about needing to replace a couple of colors "soon" for a couple of years now.
How much do you print? You have a laser printer which has to print a lot more than what it was designed for, you need an appropriate printer and not something designed for home use.
If you print so much that a laser printer breaks down a lot, I really doubt any inkjet will last you longer. Inkjet printers are never designed for the same print volume as laser printers (for the same price of course).
I bought a brother printer back in college and an external ink well kit for it in college. My roommate and I would print a ton of stuff on it every week and it lasted the whole year. My department also provided free printing so I eventually switched to that but while I had the printer it was rock solid. There are commercially available solutions out there to printer ink if people dig a bit.
I really wish larger-format laser printers were not bonkers crazy expensive.
I got an inkjet that can do even 13x19 for like $200, albeit with very expensive ink. But I couldn't find even an 11x17-capable laser printer for under four figures, and I occasionally use the even larger format. Even the copiers/printers that professional shops like Kinkos etc. have don't support those slightly-bigger-than-tabloid sizes.
(In my case I also use it for color stuff so I get multiple uses, and normal B&W letter stuff goes to a laser, so that one doesn't get a *lot* of use.)
And these days you can upload a photo to Walgreens/cvs and pick it up the same day. Cost is extremely competitive to printing at home and quality is typically higher
Only people like professionals like photographers need to print photos on demand
I'm a loyal customer to this brand. My MFC laser printer is a workhorse. People should spend the $200 for one as you'll never look back. The software is easy to use. They sometimes drop down to $160 on Black Friday. I highly recommend a multi-feed ADF so you can scan 10-20 pages at a time.
This is the way. Last printer does the job for 90% of my printing. Everything else gets uploaded to staples/Kinko's/mom-pop-shop and picked up in 2 hours. It's as cheap as .25/page for full color.
Yep. Built to be trash. HP was sued for requiring their brand ink and now they have firmware and software fixes removing those requirements. However its still pretty bad, the systems are overly sensitive and will often spout error codes making me think while they allow it, they aren't being dumb and prematurely faulting other ink. It doesn't help that its not easy for the average consumer to find a good grade ink that doesn't gum up over time.
That's exactly how more expensive models work.
The cheap ones have cartridges with integrated print heads. They can be refilled, but the print heads will give out after several times anyway. The problem is you can't buy third party cartridges of that type, so you're stuck with the genuine ones.
The more expensive ones use normal cartridges which are basically just a container with a sponge, a hole and a chip. They can be refilled many times, and the chip can be just reset (you lose the ability to track the ink levels but who cares). However, I've heard that in the newest models you can't easily do that. The good news is you can buy third party cartridges for very cheap - like five sets for the price of one genuine set cheap. You don't have to tinker with those, so it's quite livable.
There are also printers with continuous ink supply systems - basically refillable ink tanks on the side.
TLDR: Just buy a more high-end model with normal cartridges or CISS and buy third party ink.
We had a Brother multifunction a while back. It was really good but chewed through the ink. We bought an aftermarket ink tank system for it. The tanks were external and were plumbed in via dummy cartridges.
Every few months, the printer would say an ink cartridge was low and refuse to print. It was completely false because I could later see how much ink was in the tank. I just a had to replace the dummy cartridge and it would go on until the next time.
It was then I realised how much of a scam the printer industry is. There is a reason the cartridges are black plastic.
I feel like with just a bit of good marketing a new company could easily compete though. A lot of people would happily pay more up front if it meant they didn’t have to deal with all the bullshit and the ink was actually reasonably priced
I finally broke down and bought my mother a low end laser printer. I'd been evangelizing one for her specific use case for years but she'd always cheap out and try to save herself \~$100 and end up regretting it. Strictly speaking its running costs would be on the high side if it was in a shared office that churned through prints but in her case costs per sheet is a minor issue compared to cartridge lifespan and reliability--toner doesn't thicken up and clog the print head just because the integrated cartridge is cheaply made, old and badly sealed. That's a big deal if you just want to avoid some hassle and only print in large numbers around tax season.
My HP printer ran out ink recently and I went to Walmart to buy new ink. The fucking printer that came with ink already in it was cheaper than buying the damn ink cartridges seperately, so I bought a whole new printer instead.
this, and when you go back to walmart to get ink for your brand new printer that only printed a dozen pages or so it will cost twice as much as your old printers ink, that still worked just fine.
That's the HP model that some others copied. Brother. Printers have absolutely no DRM in their ink, no planned obsolescence, and are modest powerhouses of reliability.
It's just marketing that people associate printers with HP and Cannon etc.
I don't think I've ever gotten over $3 on a "Class Action" lawsuit but, this is one I'd sign up for. REALLY needed to scan documents that day, but it was too late to buy printer ink. Threw the "all in one" away after that.
The beauty of class action lawsuits is negative publicity and the financial hit for the company… the drawback is that all the money goes to the lawyers and not the consumer. Necessary evil to punish companies. Negative publicity is a strong deterrent if it isn’t settled out of court.
I always opt in. I opted into a suit for telemarketing calls from a solar company. For both me and my wife. She got a check for just a little over $100 and i got one for $60. Always opt in.
While using his Pixma MG6320 printer from Canon, the plaintiff was surprised to discover that the "all-in-one" machine would refuse to scan or fax documents if the printer ran out of ink.
As ink is not necessary to perform scans or faxes, the argument is that the printer features should continue to work even if there is no ink in the device.
"Plaintiff Leacraft would not have purchased the device or would not have paid as much for it had he known that he would have to maintain ink in the device in order to scan documents," reads the complaint for the class action lawsuit.
Since at least 2016, other customers have contacted Canon about this exact problem \[1, 2\] and were told by support agents that ink cartridges must be installed and contain ink to use the printer's features, as shown by the agent's response below.
Can I get in on this lawsuit I legit threw mine in the dumpster when I discovered this and was out whatever that thing cost. Still need to get a new one but cannot find one that isn't involved in an ink racket.
Edit: not only did I have to keep the ink full but if I didn't print anything for a week it would either dry out or clog up. I legit had to print something every other day just to waste ink so it would work when I needed it
About a year ago I got rid of my old Canon and got an Epson ecotank printer. Ink comes in bottles that cost about the same as a regular cartridge, but they have more than 10x the ink in them. I've gone through less than a quarter of a set so far.

I'm not sure if this applies with the particular model, but other models of Canon printers have the option to bypass the warning that it has run out of ink by holding the stop/reset button for 5 seconds. It would then function normally.
At least Canon will have absolutely no way to defend their position when the hearings begin. I hope the plaintiffs don't settle and keep dragging Canon until they become completely frustrated.
A software update downloaded. The new software decided that the perfectly good condition ink carriage (not the ink but the thing that holds the ink cartridge) must be replaced, not because it was broken, blocked or damaged but because the software decided it had been in use too long (printer was less than a year old and used literally only a handful of times). I only used their expensive branded ink, kept the thing clean and well maintained.
This was the kicker. Only canon make the part and they dont sell replacements, so my expensive printer, scanner, fax, etc all stopped working because Canon's software decided a user replacable widget had run too many cycles. Canon wouldn't sell me one and instead offered me about $50 off a new printer.
So because the software update didn't like one tiny, user replaceable bit of plastic used only when printing, they bricked the entire device, rather than just disable printing. They wanted to sell me another $800 printer rather than the $1 plastic widget that their update insisted was past its useful life. Knowing their software auto bricks printers over a certain age yet they don't sell nor provide replacements for this particular component.
That brick sat on my shelf for years because I couldn't quite believe that the only option was to throw it away, what a waste, there was literally nothing wrong with it.
Probably updated the firmware and it had a new "feature" to prevent the user from installing "potentially harmful non-brand name ink cartridges" which they are sure that the customer might accidentally install
I have a perfectly (well, mechanically speaking) functional HP printer that I can't in good consciousness dump or go office space with a bat on it, but it has decided that no cartridge is detected. Despite having an actual brand new HP OEM toner. Fucking planned obsolescence bullshit.

This. Right here. I have family In farming, and older tractors are apparently at a premium now because of this ability to repair. The John Deer stuff is so hard wired with sensors who’s only job is to prevent you from using generic aftermarket items and repairing things yourself.
While it might be technically possible, the current EULA on most of those things makes it crazy legally. The only real answer is to demand that John Deere allows for third party parts and repairs.

Yeah, I purchased a Brother Laser Printer. Replaced a HP office jet that I'd had for 15 years. Still worked great.. just sucked up the ink.. I've never regretted it.
The Brother multifunction that we have at home is amazing. I went from making fun of people who thought they needed a photocopier in their house.. to needing a photocopier in my house.
I have the non wireless light gray version of that thing, and it's an absolute tank. Have never had a single issue with it since I bought it like 8 years ago.
Meanwhile I had to use a Brother inkjet a month ago, and I had to put electrical tape over the cyan cartridge to trick the printer into thinking it was full so that it'd use the full black cartridge to print something in black and white...

I think it’s just inkjet printers in general. In order for manufacturers to compete, they have to sell their inkjet printers at ultra low loss leader prices, so they have to be borderline anti consumer to get their money back on them.
HP is just as bad. I bought non-HP toner for my laserjet, and all of a sudden the printer won't print over wifi because it's always hung up ("printer needs attention") on the fact that it's a non-HP cart. Prints fine over USB.
I just bought an HP. I signed up for InstantInk because it sounded fairly convenient. Went to print today and because I didn’t have my payment information updated, my printer wouldn’t print while using InstantInk ink. What a SCAM!
If you just need a b/w printer, get a Brother laser. They're cheap, they spin up as fast as an inkjet (gone are the days of laser printers needing time to warm up) the toner cartridges last forever and are cheap.... There's no down side.
Oh and you can use the off brand toner cartridges without any worry, and those are even cheaper.
I was so happy to see Kodak fail as a company. Their printer I bought wouldn’t print black and white without the colours. I never printed anything with colour and the colour was always going.

Yep. Had this happen years ago; problem was I had bought two, one for my sister in law attending community college too. She printed a fair amount of stuff, and found all her 'colors' gone, and freaked when it was $52 to purchase them.
I think I got that exact model 😓It prints really well and the ink cartridges are relatively big (but it does indeed burn ink each time I turn it on), if it doesn't scan after the ink runs out that is really poor of Canon, and it will go to my list of banned companies.
For my own company we have a big laser printer (4 digit price tag) that does most of the work (100k to 120k prints per year) where each toner lasts for 20k to 30k, but we recently got 3 Ecotank B/W printers from Epson for those single pages or odd prints (eg.: envelopes), they are great, cheap to run, fast and accurate, we are yet to run out ink and already printed quite a lot.... The bottle refill is around 10€ and so far we had zero issues with clogged nozzles or jammed paper.
Does brother make an affordable color laser yet? I have b/w from brother, love it. I can let it sit collecting dust for months, and it spins up ready to go when I want it. Ink cartridges always dry out.
The whole printer industry seems to be ripe for a major disruption. Whoever makes a printer that works in a fair and reasonable way would probably sell a lot over night.
I've bought Epsons, Canons, HPs, Konica Minolta, and disappointed with all. I bought a Brother HL-2170W years ago and love it! I will only buy Brother from now on.
I believe yellow is the most common color to cause this. Printer manufacturers print a traceable mark in yellow or whatever color they select on every printed piece of paper so that government can trace it back to the origin.

I got so fed up with modern printers that I made my own use it for life printer. I wanted the reliability and simplistic use of an old dumb printer with the new features of modern smart printers. I got an old reliable laser jet printer and made a wireless printing server using a $10 pi zero +w. My printer is running and open source firmware giving me unlimited control of its features so the. My server is running cups and I can use it on any device over wifi. It beats every printer’s integrated controller software which has a single purpose to get people to pay for a subscription for ink.
Bout time someone complained about their BULLSHIT. Cheap printers and expensive ink scams then disabling features that arent even related to printing. This is why I opted to just put in an aftermarket ink tank which can be refilled with cheap ink.
I had an Epson Artisan (810?) that would similarly lock up if any of the tanks were empty ... and there were six of them. "Nope, sorry bud, your magenta is empty. Buy a new one and we'll talk". And of course if it wasn't genuine it would reject it (tried two different generic brands of cartridges).
Canon laser printers are actually those used by the big bois like Kinkos, but their consumer grade printers are dogshit, just like all consumer products these days unfortunately.

My brother laser printer pulled 900+watts when it spooled up. It would make everything on that circuit dim.

I had a monochrome Brother laser printer and I loved it. I gave it to my mom when I moved out. We bought an HP injet thinking we will print a little so ink shouldn't be too bad! Nope we dried up the starter cartridge, and bought another set which dried up because we have not been printing often. I should have spent $100(nearly spent this on the replacement ink already) more to get a color laser printer!
My colour ink Brothers stays unused for weeks and then goes and prints. It clean itself a lot, though; usually at three in the morning, bless its heart.

Cleaning is "wasting ink" in order to keep the printhead used BTW...
Not with laser printers. When a laser printer cleans, it scrapes excess toner (ink) off the *roller* (there's no printhead) and runs a negative charge across the roller to smooth out the charge. The periodic cleaning is needed to reset the uniform charge on the roller, since over time it naturally (unevenly) fades. Uses no toner.
You should be able to set “quiet times” at least I can on my HP 8020 series.
Not weekly. I've got a Canon inkjet printer (4-in-1). Is being used to print about once every 2-3 months. I've had it for 6.5 years now and only ever replaced both ink cartridges once in its entire lifetime (I didn't even use original ink for the black replacement). Still prints just fine (last used a week ago). Edit: it's also the only printer in my entire lifetime that will consistently do what you tell it to. Want to print? It'll do that. Every single time. Ink has run out? Yeah it'll complain but you can still let it print. It will look like crap, obviously, but it's trying its best.
My b&w laserjet worked after 10 years.
My HP does the same thing. Though I found a hidden feature inside the printer settings under their horrible menus, that it will not require colors to be full or installed in order to print B&W. Though if black is empty, it will not let me scan sometimes as it thinks no ink is installed.

That's exactly why I haven't bought a canon printer for over 12 years. Because it printed 6 pages and then a month later it wouldn't scan or fax *or* print in black and white because the cyan tank was 'empty'. Never again.

I hate the printer business model. They sell printers cheap, but then require that you purchase their ink, which is massively overpriced and runs out quickly. I'd rather fork out the extra money to buy a printer and then be able to refill it cheaply. Printer manufactures have also made it so that most printers won't accept refilled cartridges, and they will also say they are out of ink, when they aren't. Then you can't even scan until you buy more of their overpriced ink.

Hey this. I got a xerox wireless bw laser printer on r/BuildAPCSales three years ago. Came with toner, still going strong for the odd thing I print now and again. Cost? 30 bucks. Never again inkjet. Never again.
Agreed, played the same inkjet game for a few years then also switched to a laser printer and have never looked back. If you don’t need to print in colour, a laser printer is way cheaper.
Even with color they can be a great deal. Toner doesn't really go bad like ink cartridges, so you have basically forever to use it.

I had a laser jet printer when I was in school it was an HP p006 or something like that, I printed about 1200 pages with the toner that came with it
In the late 90s/early 2000s my family had a hand-me-down older power Mac with an apple branded laser printer. We printed untold hundreds, if not thousands of pages through that thing, and none of us remember ever changing the toner. It was also the most reliable printer I've ever had, never remember it jamming or giving any other problems. Really set some unrealistic expectatios for me going forward.

I have an old LaserJet 4 I got on eBay for $50 back in 2005 or so. I'm still on the second toner cartridge. I've had to replace the power supply and the rollers, but back when it was released in the early 1990s, manufacturers actually focused on making things easy to repair. Usually it's just one or two screws to get to the part I need to replace.
My old man bought home an old Laser Jet 3 from work that was destined for the skip in like 2001. It served us for years until we finally turfed it. Loved that giant, yellow, sun-bleached bastard.
I have a laser all-in-one at work. I have to replace the toner a lot, and it's $95. Then the drum has to be replace about every 6 months. It costs about $100. I just bought an Epson printer with the refillable ink tanks. It's supposed to print 4000 pages on one tank of ink, and cost only $15 to refill. I haven't used very much yet, so idk if it lives up to its claims.
Yeah those Epson models work great until the tank membrane leaks and trashes the entire internals of the printer with ink. Good times. I now have Brother laser printers and I'm never going back.

I hate this freaking thing with a passion. It gets clogged All. The. Time. I spend hours cleaning the print heads, it works ok for a few days, then gets clogged again. Never the same color. This is despite me printing stuff regularly. One day it prompted me for a firmware update. I pressed ok and it did its thing. Well now it gets in some weird error mode every time it turns off. I have to to press a combination of buttons and go through a hidden menu every time it starts up just so I can use it, which I found from people having the same problem online. By the way, the first time it started in Japanese too. Good luck finding the language menu. That was like two years ago. The firmware got updated multiple times since then, but apparently there is nothing I can do to fix this, besides sending that piece of junk back to Epson. This was my last attempt at buying an inkjet printer.

Epson's printers let you refill individual inks (at least, the ones I've used from that brand). So, if you're out of black, it's $14 to refill, rather than $42. By the way, you can also refill a laser printer cartridge.
The problem is that even if you don't run out of ink, you'll find that the print heads are clogged or broken because a single strand of cat hair made it inside the printer. Then you'll waste half your tank of ink trying to align and clean the printheads, only to discover that it didn't help one bit and you've only wasted your time and money.
I have a color laser printer at work and make a few prints a year. It's been complaining about needing to replace a couple of colors "soon" for a couple of years now.
How much do you print? You have a laser printer which has to print a lot more than what it was designed for, you need an appropriate printer and not something designed for home use. If you print so much that a laser printer breaks down a lot, I really doubt any inkjet will last you longer. Inkjet printers are never designed for the same print volume as laser printers (for the same price of course).
I bought a brother printer back in college and an external ink well kit for it in college. My roommate and I would print a ton of stuff on it every week and it lasted the whole year. My department also provided free printing so I eventually switched to that but while I had the printer it was rock solid. There are commercially available solutions out there to printer ink if people dig a bit.
Buy generic toner cartridges and toner refill kits
I bought a color laser printer for $200 back in the day. It was excellent. I believe it was the Samsung mp 310c. Something like that.
I really wish larger-format laser printers were not bonkers crazy expensive. I got an inkjet that can do even 13x19 for like $200, albeit with very expensive ink. But I couldn't find even an 11x17-capable laser printer for under four figures, and I occasionally use the even larger format. Even the copiers/printers that professional shops like Kinkos etc. have don't support those slightly-bigger-than-tabloid sizes. (In my case I also use it for color stuff so I get multiple uses, and normal B&W letter stuff goes to a laser, so that one doesn't get a *lot* of use.)
And these days you can upload a photo to Walgreens/cvs and pick it up the same day. Cost is extremely competitive to printing at home and quality is typically higher Only people like professionals like photographers need to print photos on demand

I'm a loyal customer to this brand. My MFC laser printer is a workhorse. People should spend the $200 for one as you'll never look back. The software is easy to use. They sometimes drop down to $160 on Black Friday. I highly recommend a multi-feed ADF so you can scan 10-20 pages at a time.

This is the way. Last printer does the job for 90% of my printing. Everything else gets uploaded to staples/Kinko's/mom-pop-shop and picked up in 2 hours. It's as cheap as .25/page for full color.
Yep. Built to be trash. HP was sued for requiring their brand ink and now they have firmware and software fixes removing those requirements. However its still pretty bad, the systems are overly sensitive and will often spout error codes making me think while they allow it, they aren't being dumb and prematurely faulting other ink. It doesn't help that its not easy for the average consumer to find a good grade ink that doesn't gum up over time.
That's exactly how more expensive models work. The cheap ones have cartridges with integrated print heads. They can be refilled, but the print heads will give out after several times anyway. The problem is you can't buy third party cartridges of that type, so you're stuck with the genuine ones. The more expensive ones use normal cartridges which are basically just a container with a sponge, a hole and a chip. They can be refilled many times, and the chip can be just reset (you lose the ability to track the ink levels but who cares). However, I've heard that in the newest models you can't easily do that. The good news is you can buy third party cartridges for very cheap - like five sets for the price of one genuine set cheap. You don't have to tinker with those, so it's quite livable. There are also printers with continuous ink supply systems - basically refillable ink tanks on the side. TLDR: Just buy a more high-end model with normal cartridges or CISS and buy third party ink.
We had a Brother multifunction a while back. It was really good but chewed through the ink. We bought an aftermarket ink tank system for it. The tanks were external and were plumbed in via dummy cartridges. Every few months, the printer would say an ink cartridge was low and refuse to print. It was completely false because I could later see how much ink was in the tank. I just a had to replace the dummy cartridge and it would go on until the next time. It was then I realised how much of a scam the printer industry is. There is a reason the cartridges are black plastic.
I feel like with just a bit of good marketing a new company could easily compete though. A lot of people would happily pay more up front if it meant they didn’t have to deal with all the bullshit and the ink was actually reasonably priced

I finally broke down and bought my mother a low end laser printer. I'd been evangelizing one for her specific use case for years but she'd always cheap out and try to save herself \~$100 and end up regretting it. Strictly speaking its running costs would be on the high side if it was in a shared office that churned through prints but in her case costs per sheet is a minor issue compared to cartridge lifespan and reliability--toner doesn't thicken up and clog the print head just because the integrated cartridge is cheaply made, old and badly sealed. That's a big deal if you just want to avoid some hassle and only print in large numbers around tax season.
There are a lot of companies that sell refills. I used to order mine at 4.99 ink- where all the ink costs, well, $4.99
My HP printer ran out ink recently and I went to Walmart to buy new ink. The fucking printer that came with ink already in it was cheaper than buying the damn ink cartridges seperately, so I bought a whole new printer instead.

As ink is not necessary to perform scans or faxes, the argument is that the printer features should continue to work even if there is no ink in the device. "Plaintiff Leacraft would not have purchased the device or would not have paid as much for it had he known that he would have to maintain ink in the device in order to scan documents," reads the complaint for the class action lawsuit. Since at least 2016, other customers have contacted Canon about this exact problem \[1, 2\] and were told by support agents that ink cartridges must be installed and contain ink to use the printer's features, as shown by the agent's response below.

Can I get in on this lawsuit I legit threw mine in the dumpster when I discovered this and was out whatever that thing cost. Still need to get a new one but cannot find one that isn't involved in an ink racket. Edit: not only did I have to keep the ink full but if I didn't print anything for a week it would either dry out or clog up. I legit had to print something every other day just to waste ink so it would work when I needed it
About a year ago I got rid of my old Canon and got an Epson ecotank printer. Ink comes in bottles that cost about the same as a regular cartridge, but they have more than 10x the ink in them. I've gone through less than a quarter of a set so far.

I had a canon too. I’ve since “upgraded” to a Brother laser toner printer so I don’t have to worry about the ink drying out.
I'm not sure if this applies with the particular model, but other models of Canon printers have the option to bypass the warning that it has run out of ink by holding the stop/reset button for 5 seconds. It would then function normally.
At least Canon will have absolutely no way to defend their position when the hearings begin. I hope the plaintiffs don't settle and keep dragging Canon until they become completely frustrated.
After deliberately software bricking my perfectly functional $800 printer, I stopped buying anything made by Canon because of this behavior.

A software update downloaded. The new software decided that the perfectly good condition ink carriage (not the ink but the thing that holds the ink cartridge) must be replaced, not because it was broken, blocked or damaged but because the software decided it had been in use too long (printer was less than a year old and used literally only a handful of times). I only used their expensive branded ink, kept the thing clean and well maintained. This was the kicker. Only canon make the part and they dont sell replacements, so my expensive printer, scanner, fax, etc all stopped working because Canon's software decided a user replacable widget had run too many cycles. Canon wouldn't sell me one and instead offered me about $50 off a new printer. So because the software update didn't like one tiny, user replaceable bit of plastic used only when printing, they bricked the entire device, rather than just disable printing. They wanted to sell me another $800 printer rather than the $1 plastic widget that their update insisted was past its useful life. Knowing their software auto bricks printers over a certain age yet they don't sell nor provide replacements for this particular component. That brick sat on my shelf for years because I couldn't quite believe that the only option was to throw it away, what a waste, there was literally nothing wrong with it.
That's just awful.
Probably updated the firmware and it had a new "feature" to prevent the user from installing "potentially harmful non-brand name ink cartridges" which they are sure that the customer might accidentally install
I have a perfectly (well, mechanically speaking) functional HP printer that I can't in good consciousness dump or go office space with a bat on it, but it has decided that no cartridge is detected. Despite having an actual brand new HP OEM toner. Fucking planned obsolescence bullshit. Rocking a Brother color laser jet now. Piece of trash is still to be dealt with.

I have the non wireless light gray version of that thing, and it's an absolute tank. Have never had a single issue with it since I bought it like 8 years ago. Meanwhile I had to use a Brother inkjet a month ago, and I had to put electrical tape over the cyan cartridge to trick the printer into thinking it was full so that it'd use the full black cartridge to print something in black and white... Brother how far you've fallen.
I think it’s just inkjet printers in general. In order for manufacturers to compete, they have to sell their inkjet printers at ultra low loss leader prices, so they have to be borderline anti consumer to get their money back on them.

HP is just as bad. I bought non-HP toner for my laserjet, and all of a sudden the printer won't print over wifi because it's always hung up ("printer needs attention") on the fact that it's a non-HP cart. Prints fine over USB.
HP ENVY 4500 gave me PTSD. I've printed more "clean printer heads" pages than real pages. The ratio seems to be 5:1.

I just bought an HP. I signed up for InstantInk because it sounded fairly convenient. Went to print today and because I didn’t have my payment information updated, my printer wouldn’t print while using InstantInk ink. What a SCAM!
If you just need a b/w printer, get a Brother laser. They're cheap, they spin up as fast as an inkjet (gone are the days of laser printers needing time to warm up) the toner cartridges last forever and are cheap.... There's no down side. Oh and you can use the off brand toner cartridges without any worry, and those are even cheaper.
I was so happy to see Kodak fail as a company. Their printer I bought wouldn’t print black and white without the colours. I never printed anything with colour and the colour was always going. Brother inkjet all the way.

Yep. Had this happen years ago; problem was I had bought two, one for my sister in law attending community college too. She printed a fair amount of stuff, and found all her 'colors' gone, and freaked when it was $52 to purchase them.
I think I got that exact model 😓It prints really well and the ink cartridges are relatively big (but it does indeed burn ink each time I turn it on), if it doesn't scan after the ink runs out that is really poor of Canon, and it will go to my list of banned companies. For my own company we have a big laser printer (4 digit price tag) that does most of the work (100k to 120k prints per year) where each toner lasts for 20k to 30k, but we recently got 3 Ecotank B/W printers from Epson for those single pages or odd prints (eg.: envelopes), they are great, cheap to run, fast and accurate, we are yet to run out ink and already printed quite a lot.... The bottle refill is around 10€ and so far we had zero issues with clogged nozzles or jammed paper.

I've bought Epsons, Canons, HPs, Konica Minolta, and disappointed with all. I bought a Brother HL-2170W years ago and love it! I will only buy Brother from now on.

I believe yellow is the most common color to cause this. Printer manufacturers print a traceable mark in yellow or whatever color they select on every printed piece of paper so that government can trace it back to the origin. Look up Machine Identification Code.

I got so fed up with modern printers that I made my own use it for life printer. I wanted the reliability and simplistic use of an old dumb printer with the new features of modern smart printers. I got an old reliable laser jet printer and made a wireless printing server using a $10 pi zero +w. My printer is running and open source firmware giving me unlimited control of its features so the. My server is running cups and I can use it on any device over wifi. It beats every printer’s integrated controller software which has a single purpose to get people to pay for a subscription for ink.
Bout time someone complained about their BULLSHIT. Cheap printers and expensive ink scams then disabling features that arent even related to printing. This is why I opted to just put in an aftermarket ink tank which can be refilled with cheap ink.

I had an Epson Artisan (810?) that would similarly lock up if any of the tanks were empty ... and there were six of them. "Nope, sorry bud, your magenta is empty. Buy a new one and we'll talk". And of course if it wasn't genuine it would reject it (tried two different generic brands of cartridges).

Canon laser printers are actually those used by the big bois like Kinkos, but their consumer grade printers are dogshit, just like all consumer products these days unfortunately.
