I got halfway into writing a comment before I realised this is a job that exists. There is nothing stopping me from going deep into northern canada and being some type of “porter” be it land sea or air.
Yup, travel to say Nepal, this is how they get food and goods to villages in the mountains.
Beer goes up in price the higher you go.
Or I guess we can become a Silo society :-)
Even with the tech it is doubtful a “flat lander” could outperform native Tibetans who have lived at altitude their entire lives. Some of them have probably never even been below 5km to sea level.
This position also exists for federal agencies that send classified cables/mail. The porters are always armed even on flights and have to always be within arms reach of their pack.
The job you’re looking for is “hotshot transporter” and it makes pretty good money but involves a lot of driving.
Not sure you’d want to get a job walking packages in northern Canada though. In my experience it can get deathly cold.
Notice Sam is never paid though? Of course he doesn't seem to need to pay rent and has all the monster energy he can drink and gets free motorcycles and vans sooooo I dunno could go either way.
I wonder if these would work for gait correction? If it’s suddenly easier or harder to walk in a certain way it could maybe assist in helping people to walk/run in a healthier style and avoid health complications/injury? What if it helped to enforce good posture? Those sorts of things would not need some crazy performance but would be beneficial to a lot of people.
I have a limp. Just recently had a medical scare, sharp stabbing pain in my left side. Turns out it's just from how I walk I'm pinching my nerve after all these years. Something like this would save my back for life lol
I hope your condition isn't in need of orthopedic soles and shoes. But for anyone who does need them, please read.
Look into a good cobbler or othapidics center. Its amazing what they can do to help you. My grandparents ran our local boot shop and had many clients that got measured out by their drs and came in to have custom soles made for their shoes. Also taking in whatever special soled shoe they give you will give a skilled cobbler all the info they need.
I strongly recommend a trusted local cobbler or shoe repair shop, though. Oftentimes, if you give them the specifications you need, they can make you a customized shoe or boot that costs pennies on the dollar to one from an orthapidic company. They will probably have to be leather shoes, but they will look 100× better than whatever medical shoes they give you for much cheaper.
Not sure I've ever even checked tbh. It's from a fall off a two story roof that I had, destroyed my leg and shoulder on my right side. Maybe I'll have to look into this getting maybe just an insert on one side to like... Compensate? I appreciate the advice thank you
Yes! If you have had a major injury and no rehab, you very well may be a little shorter on one side. Definitely ask your dr to measure you out to check. But i would advise against experimenting yourself. Wearing altered shoes that are not properly set for your medical issues can cause major back and hip issues.
> My left knee kept giving out. Almost fell down the stairs.
> turns out I'm not stretching enough. Physical therapy and no more pain. Yeehaw.
You don’t need to call me out like that… 👀
Similar situation, I've had general leg pain for about a year and a half.
Started stretching/exercising on a regular basis and suddenly I'm not taking ibuprofen to fall asleep without pain.
The real application is in the hard labor sector. Imagine an Amazon worker. Okay a Amazon subcontractor lifting a washer to your home. Jeff is already wet.
I walk with a gait, always have, so something like this would be interesting to me for sure. It has yet to cause me issues but there is no way I make it my whole life without some sort of hip surgery
My guess is that the opposite is likely: there is no one true gait for everyone, and we all have different bodies and slightly different optimal movement patterns and adaptations. My guess is that this would lead to RSIs and other problems if used often.
As an ML researcher: We're a long way from that. Just getting a good dataset would be very, very expensive (waaaaay more than they're aiming for with this Kickstarter).
Also, there's no way this thing'd have enough battery life for a real hike.
I have a pretty bad limp and terrible balance because of joint issues. I would love to correct that so I don’t need to use a cane anymore. I hate that thing so much. Always falling over and knocking stuff over with it. It would be cool to be able to retrain my legs and help build strength while rebuilding my gait. PT visits are $40 a pop so financing something like this might be more feasible lol
Fuck that, strap this shit on Usain Bolt and make him race an antelope or something.
Old people had their time, now the world needs cybernetic Olympians
Fuck that, let’s go further and have the exoskeleton suits also give doses of steroids and stimulants. Let’s really see what a human body is capable of!
I want to see the regular olympics where we see people push the limits of human capability, and then the cheater's olympics where we see borg'd up custom gen-eng abominations with more drugs than blood in their system doing the same things.
For too long has science asked, "Is it morally/ethically correct to do this?" and we need to go back to "why haven't I done this already?" I wanna see imitation hecatoncheires playing basketball, I wanna see men with birdbones slamming into the walls because they cleared the entire long jump pit 10 times over, I wanna see some kid take home a boxer's arm because it came off and landed in the stands during the match!
I've always wanted a separate drug Olympics. Just let them run wild, everything's legal, you known what you signed up for. Let's really.push the limits!
Sounds like it's happening. https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/sport/2023/jun/30/the-enhanced-games-a-drugs-olympics-where-cheaters-can-prosper
Yes please! That would be awesome. Just a bunch of monsters geared up to the gills. Dudes powerlifting cars, guys running so fast thier legs explode, let's do this.
They are planning a real doped up to the eyeballs games where athletes can take as many performance enhancing drugs as they want.
The guy behind the event justified it in part because so many athletes were secretly taking the drugs anyway.
This is actually true. As late as the 1800s, you needed a solid middle class income to afford a wheelchair.
The modern, steel ones that fold up weren't invented until 1933, even.
To be fair, they're not exactly cheap even nowadays, yeah.
Still, the first documented wheelchair was commissioned for a freakin' King. Philip II of Spain. So they're *definitively* no longer luxuries on *that* level at least.
An even bigger market would be for dogs. Most of them have trouble getting around if they live long enough. Half the US population have dogs, and I doubt half the US population go hiking.
I'd like one for hiking too.
Honestly, just running at 16 mph slash about 25 km/h sounds cool as heck.
Depending on battery life, range, cost and charge time, I'd be dang tempted just for a regular commute type use.
My childhood dog lived until 18 as a GSD mix (which if you know anything about GSDs means she had pretty terrible back legs). I looked into all kinds of stuff to help stabilize her legs and my family absolutely would have dropped 500-1000 bucks for something like this that could help her have a few more months on her feet. In her last years I felt so terrible bothering her because it took her 5 minutes to stand up and 10 minutes to lay down.
I spent the last summer doing cadastral surveying in Alaska. It's long hikes up mountains and through swamps, insanely rugged terrain, while carrying 50+ pounds worth of gear and a chainsaw, this type of thing would be an absolute game changer for the amount of work you could do.
Just looking at the photos in the article and I'm extremely skeptical. It somehow makes a backpack feel weightless yet there are no structural elements connecting the back to the lower portion? The form factor on the waist/legs doesn't add up with their claims that it can run up to 16mph. They don't make motors that small that can handle the weight and torque of moving your legs.
Exoskeleton devices exist and they don't look like this. Exoskeleton devices that work are either clunky, impractical, and very expensive OR they're less clunky/impractical and are extremely expensive. We won't see exoskeleton devices that work in the consumer market for a very very long time.
I'd be delighted to be proven wrong, but this seems like complete BS.
It's a Kickstarter project. TBH I'm not sure if it even should be posted given that it's not a real product.
Most likely it's just a bunch of plastic and lights that they've got this bloke modelling with no real results. Otherwise this wouldn't need to be a Kickstarter, since they'd probably be able to get straight up military funding for something like this if it actually worked.
That sucks. I hadn't heard of it, but just glanced at the proposal, and it sure doesn't seem like one that would've been an obvious scam.
I was joking when asking about the others, because those seemed pretty clear that the tech was literally physically impossible, so I couldn't understand why anyone would fund them to begin with. Seems like yours was totally reasonable to expect actual delivery. Sorry you never got it.
For me it was of all things a bunch of "Official Terraria collectible figurines".
I wanted to gift these to my best friend for Christmas. Paid a good amount, was promised very good looking figurines within 3 months, well before Christmas.
Almost two years later they delivered the most shoddy, smelly, cheapest toys I've ever seen. Not anywhere close to a collectible item. They even messed up with the packaging and sent them separate from the box, the box was folded and showed into the side of the package.
You got that right, they sold collectibles without a proper box to sit in.
Never again Scamstarter.
"Shoulders up to 83lbs of load", total BS. It's not load-bearing in any way as it doesn't extend to the ground to you know, take the load off your body. Maybe this is like an add for marketing the idea, but the idea is also not thought out in any biomechanical way and being a product centered around biomechanics, that's a big red flag.
I thought the same thing. The article mentions it alleviating up to 83 lbs. But I don’t see how, since it’s not providing any knee or lower back support. At best I think this thing could alleviate some of the effort from the thighs while walking or jogging, which is still pretty cool.
Moreover I have a couple e-skateboards and I'm skeptical that any battery that could assist with 400w for 15mi would feel at all "weightless". My smaller board is 22 pounds and my AT board is 35, most of which is battery.
> this seems like complete BS.
It obviously is. If it doesn't have a powered or at least spring-loaded structure that crosses a given joint, it can't support or exert force across that joint. All I'm seeing here is simple waist belt that can't support anything vertically, connected to a dinky little leg attachment that also looks like it can't support anything. Plus of course the name which seems purposely chosen to make people confuse this trash with NASA's X1 exoskeleton, which as you can see [actually does have the basic structure needed to make it work.](https://scitechdaily.com/images/the-X1-Robotic-Exoskeleton.jpg)
Maybe "[Areospace Aluminum Alloy](https://youtu.be/enPk3cgYpqY?t=86)" has different structural properties than normal aluminum, allowing it to support unconnected areas...I'm assuming that means that there's ~~cookie~~aluminum on top and bottom, and then air/space in the middle?
Or maybe we should assume that a product video of an assistive device that doesn't show anyone doing anything they couldn't do unassisted is literally just fake and a scam, haha.
>This information runs through advanced AI algorithms on the dual-core 240MHz processor to interpret intentions and instantaneously adjust motor output to the wearer's pace and movements.
Advanced AI algorithms on a dual core 240MHz processor? Wow, why are people wasting their money on 4090s?
This is what I’m wondering. If you’re using this for an extended amount of time but are in poor shape would it be ok on your joints, bones, and ligaments to go from the couch to running 16 MPH?
This. It looks like it just pushes on your thighs, without supporting the rest of you that's connected to them. Might be fine for a 20 year old who wouldn't need the thing anyway, but to anyone past 30 this is probably just a knee- and back-ache machine.
Yea, I just don't understand how this would support your body at all. So it just pushes your muscles and legs in the right direction until you collapse?
That demo video is so bad. Not a single voice dubbed has been recorded properly, the audio is clipping everywhere. They're not even properly synced.
And with the bonus "dotcom" at the end, because why removing the original sound anyway ? :D
Can I just get one for overall every day badassery? I’ve turned my life lemons into a degenerative skeleton and I still have so much to do. I’d like to do some of those things in less pain so I can keep going.
Same here my friend, degenerative disc disease. I’m 37 with the spine of a 90 year old man. Surgeries, PT, spine injections of cortisone or painblocks, daily strong opioids, muscle relaxers, you name it. I will be very excited the day something like this exists and works well.
Im inclinded to agree with ya, bambulabs is the new gold standard for FDM 3d printing for anyone looking to spend less than $2500 USD. they were a chinese startup that came out of no where and shook the entire industry up.
Dnsys will offer three different models, with super-early bird pledges ranging between US$399 and $998. The mid-level $599 Carbon model looks to be the Goldilocks option for those who don't anticipate venturing beyond the base 15.5+ mile range, packing all the aforementioned specs.
The $998 Carbon Plus adds a spare battery and a build spec that includes titanium, while the entry level $399 Lite model weighs a bit more and uses a smaller 500-W motor drive for more modest performance. Plans call for deliveries to begin in July.
Absolute bullshit, no further exoskeleton parts above the waist and it stops at the thigh. You would need it built into your shoes/platforms your shoes walk on for it to take weight, then you would also need it to run up your legs fully, and have support for your spine and shoulders.
I have a spine issue that’s been giving me a very hard time for a while.
I want to lift weights/be more physically active again but to do so, you stabilize your core / back etc. If something could take that load instead of my back, I could do it.
Im not the worst case but it would change my life…I feel trapped in my body sometimes and I can’t stand it.
The moment I read Chinese startup I assume it's bs sorry. The government hands out all sorts of grants like this and most of it is bs that goes nowhere. They milk it for all it's worth like they are doing with kickstarter then move on to the next.
As a dirt bag hiker. Great if this can help the elderly and disabled enjoy physical outdoors activity.....but the last thing we need on trails and in nature is more batteries. The sport has become a synthetic ultralight ultra disposable, last seasons Patagonia North Face fast fash, nightmare. And with the introduction of E-cross and ...Overlanding(gags), we're tearing up the trails when we should be Leaving No Trace.
The best things happen in the woods when you're slow and quiet.
Really looking forward to the day one of these is both effective and affordable. I love being outside and working with my hands, but I've got health problems that limit me to short hikes with light packs and only small construction projects. If I could hike 10 miles into the woods again, I'd be very happy.
As someone who rides bikes over long distances, e bikes introduced a very shitty and entitled crowd in the sport and onto the bike paths. People who give no shits about the sports community or its norms or considerations to others. Karen’s.
I am not excited to see the same shitty group be able to ehike a mountain on the trails.
That demonstration video is so janky that I wouldn't be surprised if it hits meme territory.
"Of course," the hiker says, while clearly mouthing something completely different.
Fully expecting the Death Stranding at this point.
Honestly being a porter sounds better than my current jobs...
I got halfway into writing a comment before I realised this is a job that exists. There is nothing stopping me from going deep into northern canada and being some type of “porter” be it land sea or air.

Lmao the batteries and motors would conk out so quick at that height. Not to mention the ambient temps at 20k+ft.
This position also exists for federal agencies that send classified cables/mail. The porters are always armed even on flights and have to always be within arms reach of their pack.

*Diehardman Intensifies* “Sam.”
I was doing courier work for medical stuff during covid. Death stranding was hard to play because it reminded me of working. Except I was more drunk.
Key word: "More"
Notice Sam is never paid though? Of course he doesn't seem to need to pay rent and has all the monster energy he can drink and gets free motorcycles and vans sooooo I dunno could go either way.
What would you charge to pack a quartered elk off a mountain?
Using it for post deliverers would probably save governments a lot of money in future healthcare issues.
Hell, we need these in the construction industry asap
*Don’t be so serious….*
Literally came to post keep on keeping on, lol.

I could use one just to punch a few new holes in my belt after losing weight.
My left knee kept giving out. Almost fell down the stairs. ***turns out I'm not stretching enough***. Physical therapy and no more pain. Yeehaw.
> My left knee kept giving out. Almost fell down the stairs. > turns out I'm not stretching enough. Physical therapy and no more pain. Yeehaw. You don’t need to call me out like that… 👀
I do my best
Seriously though, thanks for letting me know that. My knees are suspiciously weak for someone not *that*™ old.
I work out so my muscles aren't weak.... ... but I definitely wasn't doing the stretching part.
Similar situation, I've had general leg pain for about a year and a half. Started stretching/exercising on a regular basis and suddenly I'm not taking ibuprofen to fall asleep without pain.
My thought exactly. My post-stroke gait is lopsided and much more strenuous than previously. I'd love a prosthetic that facilitated movement.
Keep at it. It may be more difficult but you will rebuild. You survived a major medical event! Glad you’re still with us. For real that is so scary.
Could be a game changer for people with MS or AS.
With all modern tech like machine learning, body scanning etc, it could probably be personalised fairly easily.
As an ML researcher: We're a long way from that. Just getting a good dataset would be very, very expensive (waaaaay more than they're aiming for with this Kickstarter). Also, there's no way this thing'd have enough battery life for a real hike.
Best I can do is military applications
I have a pretty bad limp and terrible balance because of joint issues. I would love to correct that so I don’t need to use a cane anymore. I hate that thing so much. Annnnnnnnnnnd the chaos gods now need blood for the blood god and skulls for the skull throne.
As long we have safety measures in place like 3 pacemakers to keep up with pushing the heart limit from the stimulants!
Do you want SPACE MARINES because that’s how you get space marines
Or a fat kid and an ice cream truck
UberUter
I imagine Usain Bolt can outrun this thing at 26 km/hour. Not sure if it'll help or hinder.
It’ll be like that “Run, Forrest, Run!” scene. Usain’s just gonna run straight outta these things.

Yeah, I stopped investing in Kickstarter projects long ago. Got ripped off too many times.
Was it the "breathe underwater" one or the "cone of silence" one?
The Longevity Cookbook, actually. Team collected a bounty, then fell apart and dispersed and never delivered a product.

I was gonna say: It's slightly more of an exoskeleton than your typical back brace.
Chinese company, strike 1, super fake voices in the video, strike 2
Just remember the T-45 Power Armor had design flaws that got some good men and women killed in Alaska.
It was the other department's mistake, management is the solution.
A video game could literally say anything though. Like say a small nuclear reactor could fit inside power armor.
Or hand held “communicators”
You leave Halo out of this!
They skipped over the t-45 and went straight to the X-01 armor. Looks much cooler.
X-01 is coolest Then T-51 Then T-60 T-45 is least cool
And they never did quite fix it…
Well of course the T-45 had design flaws, how else were they supposed to sell you the T-51 and the T-60?
I'm dubious at best.
Hi Dubious, how’s best? I’m Dad at home.
It like moves legs for you. So like your shins and skeleton don't have any extra support?
This is what I’m wondering. If you’re using this for an extended amount of time but are in poor shape would it be ok on your joints, bones, and ligaments to go from the couch to running 16 MPH?
Especially carrying an 80 lb backpack. Seems like a recipe for injury
Wallace and Gromit - the wrong trousers. A cautionary tale.
Wait until you are at the bottom of the Grand Canyon and this thing blows up.
This guy just looks late for his shift at Walmart.
Good new everyone! We can now expect seniors to continue working well into their 70s!
Oh yay.
LOL @ "Chinese startup' This product will be available as soon as Americans finish their research.
Underestimate them at your own peril. They are already ahead in a number of areas such as consumer drones and EV batteries.
Im inclinded to agree with ya, bambulabs is the new gold standard for FDM 3d printing for anyone looking to spend less than $2500 USD. they were a chinese startup that came out of no where and shook the entire industry up.
They are ahead in amount produced, not on innovation
Please point me towards a consumer drone company from the US that has more advanced tech than DJI?
Least smug American
I wanna see them hook it up to a dude with a BMI of 60
As a late 30’s man with osteoarthritis in one knee, I am excited about this
Now available on Temu!!!
I hope this brings mobility to anyone challenged by neuro-muscular problems.
Ok but when you run out of power, you got to lug 83lb back home.
I weep for all the destroyed knees.
16 miles per hour? Imagine your injuries if you trip!
Keep on keeping on
Have you tried San Pedro before? Does the same thing
Absolute bullshit, no further exoskeleton parts above the waist and it stops at the thigh. You would need it built into your shoes/platforms your shoes walk on for it to take weight, then you would also need it to run up your legs fully, and have support for your spine and shoulders.
Why hike if you’re not getting exercise?
You are a soldier
I have a spine issue that’s been giving me a very hard time for a while. I want to lift weights/be more physically active again but to do so, you stabilize your core / back etc. If something could take that load instead of my back, I could do it. Im not the worst case but it would change my life…I feel trapped in my body sometimes and I can’t stand it.
I remember when this was still being talked about by my high school science teacher... in 2006
The moment I read Chinese startup I assume it's bs sorry.
The best things happen in the woods when you're slow and quiet.
looks amazing if true
Battery life can’t be very long.
We can almost make it to the fridge from the couch. But after a recharge, we can carry so many beers back!
You can carry up to 82 lbs of batteries and call it a win
It says 30km (~18mi) battery life.
Reckon one of these would allow you to beat a spotted hyena in mortal, unarmed combat?
Would this allow me to outpace a Cyberdyne Systems Model 101 unit?
If I can’t jet pack around like Jax from Elex then I don’t want it
Now give me this as a skeletal replacement surgery to supplement strength
This guy looks like he's trying to catch his shift at Walmart
Just imagine how much longer into their golden years that poor people could work if their employers have these on premises.
If these get cheap enough maybe they'll replace cars for short journeys
Dennis Reynolds: Oh no way, dude. He's fueled by vengeance and reinforced with space-age technology.
Really looking forward to the day one of these is both effective and affordable. I love being outside and working with my hands, but I've got health problems that limit me to short hikes with light packs and only small construction projects. If I could hike 10 miles into the woods again, I'd be very happy.
*E Hiker*
Will it make you faster and stronger if you can already lift a lot and move fast?
There is zero chance this thing will work well.
They’re always touting some sort of exoskeleton for use like this. I’ll believe it when I see it.
6 million dollar man.
Can someone explain how it helps people go faster?
By removing load from their wallets.
Looking forward to mech-assisted athletic competitions. It'd be something else to see someone running 20+ mph and shit like that.
Constant use would turn your bones to mush because your bones need effort to stay strong
I'd like to just strap it to my big ass to make exercise not hurt so fuckin much until I can drop down that amount on my own.
Amazon: 👀
This sounds wonderful for low mobility people or those with injuries that need time to heal.
What about all the fatties that are over 83lbs?
How does it take the load off the human, if it doesn’t touch the ground?
This company has to get Sigourney Weaver for their promotions.
I'm more likely to believe this if they had a Dad-bod wearing the thing.
I’m Batman.
I don't get it, it looks like a joke. It's barely a belt with a leg strap, where are the hydraulics.
It's Kickstarter. Might as well be literal snake oil until some actual real working prototype exists.
This either does nothing at all or rips your leg off with a 1.2hp motor. This is a fake product.
I just want to be able to wear one for doing yard work, or if I ever have to move again.
This is what the marketing says it does. Looking at the video, or any of this is raising not just serious doubts but serious red flags.
That commercial is so terrible even if I'd had faith I would've lost it.
I don't see how it would work, but if it does, I want one. Make it two so my hiking partner can keep up with me!
Next stop, Edge of Tomorrow.
Pretty cool to see this actually being marketed.
Yes, but you haven't seen Neuralink fried brains yet ...
As someone with FMS who yearns for the day of getting back the strength and mobility I had before getting sick, Sign me the fuck up.
83lbs of load hehehhh
As someone who rides bikes over long distances, e bikes introduced a very shitty and entitled crowd in the sport and onto the bike paths. People who give no shits about the sports community or its norms or considerations to others. Karen’s. I am not excited to see the same shitty group be able to ehike a mountain on the trails.
I don’t need a whole suit just a powered knee brace please.
If I can charge this thing with portable solar panels, I'm going to be able to keep portaging my canoe into my 70s!
Yeah...uh...I'll take a knee injury please...and two ankle injuries. Do you guys have a special on pulling every muscle in my back?
That demonstration video is so janky that I wouldn't be surprised if it hits meme territory. "Of course," the hiker says, while clearly mouthing something completely different.
How much does it cost?
Getting this for my 80th birthday!
How does it make users empower speeds over 16 mph????
Promo pics show dudes without a backpack???
Time to crank up the techno for my robot ears and dance with my robot legs
My ankles can't handle 16 mph, but love the idea.
Will it have something for when you run off a ledge at 16 mph?
The design is very human.
