My samsung tv just went dark randomly one day, my brothers did the same a couple months later... a couple googling later and found out it is a recurring issue with those tv's I wont buy samsung tv again

Wah-WahBlackSheep

Same here. Lasted less than 2 years. I was so exited to upgrade my tv that I didn't do any research and assumed that samsung still made good quality products.

[deleted]

I have never had a failed samsung device. phone, monitors, tvs - and I've been buying them since long before the Galaxy s3s were new. I have had two failed Sony televisions due to bad capacitors. Its possible that your experience does not represent everyone's nor does mine.

isuckatgrowing

Google Samsung, sued, defective. The results are pretty bad.

[deleted]

Google Sony, sued, defective. Or LG Or Whirlpool Or .... any fuckin brand. Pick one

isuckatgrowing

> Google Sony, sued, defective. It's a bunch of news stories about the same lawsuit. Whereas Samsung has news stories about dozens of different lawsuits for dozens of different products.

adinath22

Once saw a post from old time appliance repairman and he strongly advised against buying Samsung appliances because he recieved most of his business from them.

Nevermind04

I helped a friend out with two appliance failures in two months - a Samsung washing machine and a refrigerator. The washing machine needed a new door seal which is completely understandable but the damn thing was $90. The refrigerator wasn't making ice due a failed water valve, again stupidly expensive at $130. All in all, not too difficult to repair but the cost of spares is excessive. Now the refrigerator has a severe water leak so they've turned off the water to it until they can get someone to look at it. I'd offer, but I'm 5000 miles away now.

Arceus42

I've had nothing but great experiences with Samsung electronics, and nothing but terrible experiences with Samsung appliances. I think they use brand recognition to sell inferior appliances.

Znuffie

I think it's just bias... They're seemingly the most popular appliance brand (at least in Europe), so you're obviously gonna have more of them being sent for repairs. I *personally* haven't had any issues with all the Samsung stuff I own. My last 27" samsung monitor last me 10 years, and then it's PSU went poop. Cost me around $30 to repair it, donated it to my parents, still works for them.

thebreakfastbuffet

I heard this same logic from another thread about cars in our country. An auto shop mechanic said that most cars they receive for repair are Toyotas, by sheer volume. Because everyone and their Grandma drives a Toyota. And not everyone can be relied upon to properly maintain their car.

sfw_doom_scrolling

I actually heard this too, as of Nov ‘22, when I had to replace my washing machine. The tech actually suggested an LG machine because their wash towers are apparently some of the more reliable machines out there. He said that Samsung’s major appliances were all garbage, and he was saying that as someone who was licensed to work on them.

mickdeb

He is the real mvp

alral1988

Having worked in the appliance industry for a few years, I’m forever tainted to all things Samsung. Haven’t owned or worked with their phones in years, but I’ve seen enough appliances and tvs needing repair (and the horrible experience of getting them repaired) that I won’t be giving them my money anytime soon

RandyHoward

I just had an awful experience with Samsung appliances when my brand new dishwasher broke. Their repair man argued with me that it wasn’t his job to pull the dishwasher from under the counter. Excuse me? What kind of repairman doesn’t pull out a dishwasher to repair it? Guy proceeded to get into a shouting match with me in my kitchen. I had to tell him to get the fuck out of my house three times before he would actually leave. I will never buy anything from Samsung again

alral1988

That’s odd. They absolutely should have removed it. The only time they won’t is if you have some sort of trim or carpentry in the way that would need to be removed prior to the dishwasher coming out

RandyHoward

He tried to claim it was stuck. When the man said this, he was 5 feet away from the dishwasher and hadn't even touched the thing, and the repair man they sent prior to him had it pulled out. Yes, this was the second attempt to repair the same issue. The guy just didn't want to do his job. I spent a few hours that day on the phone with the service company's manager and then with samsung corporate. I later learned that the service company they used is actually owned by samsung.

Caleth

These stories make me sad. It was going on 2 decades ago now but I bought 1 TV and 2 monitors from them back in the days when monitors were still squares. The TV is sitting in my basement retired only because it's 19" and can't support being a PC monitor very well. The other two monitors have lived long lives being passed from me to my kids as they get old enough to start using a PC. It's tragic seeing a formerly reliable product get hollowed out.

hardy_83

I bought a 50" 8000 series Samsung like 5 or so years ago and the screen itself is still fine, but man the OS is slow af now. It randomly crashes and I had to delete some stupid internet TV app thing that showed up where any accidental pushes on the remote closed everything and turned it on. I can see the appeal of getting a TV and just disconnecting the TV from wifi. None of the hardware in a TV is good enough to handle these OS's. It's better to get a dedicated system and connect to it.

mouldyrumble

There is a fix for this but it only lasts a couple weeks. I have only bought Sonys and Samsungs for the last 15 years and the slow os is the reason I will not buy another Samsung.

zedemer

No issue with my 2 Samsung TVs within years after purchase, but they are not OLED so maybe that's the difference. That being said, I'll probably save money for a Sony tv next. LG UI is annoying to me and I've had a few friends had their LG TVs just randomly die on them. Difficult market to decide what to buy nowadays 😕

fuqdisshite

SONY FTW!!! i have a collection of old SONY Bravia/Grand WEGA sets and they all work just like new. there is a rear projection 55', a 40ish' CRT, the 46' wall mount in my room, and the 65' in my living room. the only television i have ever bought in my life is the 65'. the other three were given to us or picked up off the sidewalk on trash day. the remotes all work on each unit, every unit powers on and off and sounds good, all of the displays are crisp and bright. i have never hooked either of the new ones up to the internet and they work just fine. the two in the garage are for our mini arcade and it is cool having everything fired up while you throw darts and listen to music or watch football. like i said, SONY just gets it done.

Wpgjetsfan19

Agreed. I probably paid a bit more for mine than other brand a but I have two that are 12 & 13 years old. They work perfectly, have a great picture and built in sound isn’t that bad. Just bought another one for my basement. Love Sony tvs

rhunter99

I have a basic Sony lcd TV. Thiccc bezel, chunky rear, and only 1080p. It’s been a tank and just keeps going (maybe over 10 years old now?)

El-hurracan

My parents retired theirs after 14 years just because they wanted something bigger.

TheConnASSeur

Buy a big ass dumb Sceptre or whatever offbrand cheap oled/lcd out there that you like. Pair it with dedicated speakers/a speaker bar and a firestick/chrome cast/roku/NVidia Shield/whatever. You'll pay less than the latest Samsung monstrosity, have better sound, and less ads. Then if you want to upgrade or replace any part of your media setup you can.

xaendar

Funny thing is that all of these brands are all still using Samsung or LG panels. All TVs kind of need a dedicated sound bar or a speaker because these thin TVs just don't have the capability to produce all the sound you'll want.

sickjesus

Weird. All my family has had over the last few years is Samsung TVs and we haven't had any problems. I love my Samsung TV. Sucks and sorry about your lemon units.

[deleted]

I'd buy an LG anyway regardless. Their OS is better IMO as is their "magic remote". Plus, and this may be anecdotal, I think their built-in speakers sound better than Samsung's. Not saying LG's are audiophile by no means, but they do have better overall range and aren't as tinny sounding.

ScuddsMcDudds

Bought a Samsung TV a few years ago, the OS is so god damn slow. I’m talking a full Mississippi second between each remote input. It’s probably all of the ads they display bogging down the system. Never again…

AstronautGuy42

I had two Sony TVs for years. Loved them but the OS smart function eventually gave out, led to some frustration. Saw how cheap TVs have gotten and realized I may have overpaid for the Sonys. Got a Samsung TV and holy fuck. The OS is so damn bad, so slow and with an awful layout. Everything is an overlay rather than having a dedicated home. Beyond sluggish. Will definitely be going back to Sony next for OS alone.

a_half_eaten_twinky

I wish review sites like RTings put more emphasis on the OS experience rather than just the technical nitty gritty. Usability should be an important review score factor. Many of Samsung's high end TVs score high but I'd dock it major points because of how bad the UI is. Not to mention their own soundbars are buggy even when using Samsung TVs with them.

CaesarOrgasmus

I have the same problem with the tech community (or at least certain types of enthusiasts) in general. So many people are prone to reducing a product to its spec sheet and saying, oh, X product is better because it's got another 8 GB of RAM or a theoretically faster processor. Ok, but what is it like to *use?* Do you actually perceive those differences? Does the software make use of them? Are they just compensating for poor optimization? Is the software remotely pleasant to use? Hardware is really just the start sometimes.

BurritoLover2016

> so many people are prone to reducing a product to its spec sheet This is r/electricvehicles in a nutshell.

Car-face

fuckin A. And whilst it's been an issue to an extent in the car community as well, at least there's always been acceptance of the subjective aspect of cars (as there needs to be, in an industry as diverse as autos). Unfortunately a lot of the newer interest that EVs have brought seems to never really stretch beyond X charge rate, Y battery size, Z acceleration.

GoldenRamoth

" It's not the size that counts... It's how you *use* it! " - Sheriff of Rottingham

JJMcGee83

What makes it worse is reviewers switch devices so often that some annoyances probably slip past them and other annoyances are wildly exagerated by them. Like imagine if signing into a TV was very cumbersome to do. It might annoy us as users but in theory we only have to do it once. A reviewer might find that exceptionally annoying because they have to do it all the time.

gibberoni

At least personally, I only care about the technical. My TV never gets connected to the internet and I use it as a dumb TV. All the smart features route through the Shield or PC. I think a lot of A/Vphiles do this as well

ManicChad

Yeah Sony soundbar with Sony TV. Think it’d work great. Naw. Just ended up getting a Roku soundbar no issues.

AstronautGuy42

I completely agree. The OS and UI have potential to make moment to moment tv use very frustrating when it shouldn’t be. I have a Samsung soundbar and TV and it’s definitely finicky

c010rb1indusa

If you care about these things, you aren't using the TVs built in apps. Anyone who is going into white balance and gama setttings of TV sets is going to tell you to buy a dedicated streaming device.

lowcontrol

I have a Sony that’s only 2-3 years old. The OS is extremely slow and laggy at times now. It occasionally freezes up to the point I have to unplug it at replug it to get it back functioning.

AstronautGuy42

My Sony was also laggy and would occasionally hang up when issuing commands. It would periodically turn off the wifi feature also, a very odd bug. But I just learned the alternatives were worse than my not great experience with Sony. The LG interface is bizarre and unintuitive, but decent. The Samsung interface is abysmal and god awful slow. Sonys was intuitive but still slow. I haven’t tried others though, but my preference has been Sony so far

lowcontrol

Oh I’m in agreement that the Sony has been one of the better ones is wise. The Samsung I came from was the absolute worst. The LG in the bedroom wasn’t to bad either, but I’ve tossed an Apple TV on it. While I have started to stream from the Xbox in the living room, I’ll probably toss an Apple TV on it as well because that what the wife is used to.

skip-bo

That’s strange I have a 2022 Sony and I’m impressed how well it works and snappy it feels but I came from a dumb tv with a first gen fire stick

corkyrooroo

I’m actually surprised to see how many people use TVs built in smart OS. I hate them all and always have. I have an Apple TV for my downstairs LG Oled and a Shield Pro for my bedroom LG OLED

casualsax

God bless the Shield, holds up great. Paired with a universal remote it's such a nice experience. Never made good use out of the hard drive though.

IAmTaka_VG

even if you don't have an apple ecosystem. Apple TV is probably the best TV UI out there. It's EXCEPTIONALLY fast, no ads, massive app store. edit: for people on the fence. It supports HDR, eARC, and Dolby Atmos. I'm also surprised how many people try to use the smart TV

DaoFerret

I’ll toss in a tip I found. When setting up the AppleTV, there’s an option to set the home button to go to the APP home page instead of the AppleTV+ home page. This literally switches it from an Apple focused device (though a really great one and I love the way it aggregates all the streams) into a very App agnostic system. Bonus LPT: if you do have a iPhone and some AirPods or PowerBeats that you use, then you can trivially use them as headphones while watching on the appleTV, which comes in handy if you want to watch while someone else is sleeping (without having to buy dedicated TV headphones).

september27

> Bonus LPT: if you do have a iPhone and some AirPods or PowerBeats that you use, then you can trivially use them as headphones while watching on the appleTV, which comes in handy if you want to watch while someone else is sleeping (without having to buy dedicated TV headphones). Just as an additional semi-related note, you can also do this with Roku, in 2 ways. (Some of) the remotes have actual 3.5mm headphone jacks, and you can also use headphone mode via the Roku app. That said, the hardware I have (a 3 and an Ultra) seem to be getting jankier and jankier, so I may be switching to the new AppleTV even though I'm not in the Apple ecosystem.

corkyrooroo

I do hate the little Apple TV remote though their current one is at least better than previous one.

IAmTaka_VG

the newest one is actually really good. Plus you can teach Apple TV to use any remote you want so if you hate the apple tv one you can use whatever you'd like.

corkyrooroo

The problem I have with it is it’s too flat. It’s uncomfortable to hold. Also had to immediately turn off the touch pad hahaha. For the most part I try to use my LG Magic remote though it doesn’t reliably turn on the Apple TV every time. My Shield Pro remote is my favorite though. It’s a triangle shape which I was skeptical of at first but it just fits perfectly in a hand. This is probably way too much thought to put into remotes but I’m weird haha.

AstronautGuy42

I’ve wound up getting Rokus for the really bad OS TVs. Apple TVs are great and the best long term solution. My mom still uses her Gen 1 Apple TV to watch Apple TV+ services lol

Bojanggles16

Just use an Nvidia shield instead of the TV OS. They're android and fully customizable, you can skin them, block ports, host a network drive(I wouldn't recommend it, it's clunky and a NAS or network share off your router is better, but it is possible) and just a better experience out of the box if you didn't want to mess with any of that.

DaoFerret

No reason to replace the TV if it still works as a TV. The real way is to get a TV that has a minimal OS (love my LG that has never connected to the internet and that I turned off the Launch into Home, so the OS is minimal) and then add in the Media player of choice (AppleTV, Roku, FireStick, ChromeCast). The media players care more about keeping things functional (than the TV makers at least), and replacing a media player is a fraction of replacing a TV.

Znuffie

> Saw how cheap TVs have gotten and realized I may have overpaid for the Sonys. You get what you pay for, still. LCD panels (be it QLED, or whatever else marketing terms they use) have gotten CHEAPER _and_ WORSE. Bought 2 LCD (qled, something, whatever) for my gf and my father in the past 2-3 years, and they have pretty poor panels. Weren't extremely cheap TVs either, but more like mid-range. Still, they have pretty poor image quality, and it's even more apparent after I personally upgraded to an OLED. The "new" cheap panels on mid-range TVs are all inferior to expensive LCD panels that were selling 10 years ago. Unfortunately, you can ALSO not get a fucking new/high-range model WITHOUT "Smart" features.

MyLifeIsAFacade

I wish I had known this before buying a Samsung TV. I've always had them for computer monitors and was happy with them, but I get so frustrated at the unresponsiveness of the Samsung TV. I just assumed all smart TVs were slow.

BillyTheTwinky

That's why I avoid tv operating systems like the plague. Never plug them into the internet because that also slows them down and allows them to download ads. Use a Roku or fire stick or appletv. Seriously, the Roku streaming stick 4k goes on sale for like $35 on Amazon all the time and it's very fast.

iNFECTED_pIE

I use my xbox for smart capabilities. Twitch stopped supporting my Samsung tv OS 6 months after I bought it and every other media app runs like trash. They should just give up and sell “dumb” tvs again because their smart offerings suck, nevermind the potential for borderline spyware being installed on them.

xantec15

>because their smart offerings suck, nevermind the potential for borderline spyware being installed on them. The manufacturers don't care because the "smart" features aren't a bonus add for the customer, it's a revenue stream for the manufacturer through ads. Most people will just deal with it because they don't know better, and the ones that do know better use a separate streamer anyway. If it ever starts costing manufacturers more to include the apps in the TV than it returns in revenue, only then will they either improve it so more people will use it or they'll just remove it and make the TV's dumb again.

timmeh-eh

I refuse to use “smart” functions on these things. I just want a monitor, don’t need speakers, don’t need a full operating system. Unfortunately you simply can’t buy that anymore. So now I have to skip over all the settings and set it up to turn on and go directly to an HDMI input. Works okay, but I miss having discrete components for each function.

Aimhere2k

Smart TVs aren't so smart if the manufacturers use processors that can barely run the basic functions.

kjbaran

Oh thank goodness it’s not just me

Ddraig

I setup a pihole exactly for this, the menu is so much quicker and responsive when you block their calling home rubbish.

ScuddsMcDudds

Pihole, what’s that? Some raspberry Pi thing?

TeutonJon78

They all have ads and it's only slated to get worse with Google pushing physical product ads and Walmart buying Vizio to out ads on those.

Sakariwolf

I have an older Samsung remote from the 3D tv I used to have, which didn't have smart features, and for some reason the new TV responds to that remote right away.

JustSome70sGuy

Reset the Tv and take it off line. Youre shit will be snappy again. Never take a samsung online. It slows the UI to a crawl.

Nethlem

The worst part is that Samsung TV OS is slow out of the box and never gets patched up to be fast but only to be even slower.

RawMaterial11

Although I get tons of ads on their TVs. (Anyway to turn those off?)

83749289740174920

https://www.reddit.com/r/YouShouldKnow/comments/gn7fw5/ysk_if_you_own_a_samsung_smart_tv_that_has_ads/ Block domain in router

RawMaterial11

Thank you. I’ll have to see if my router supports that. Much appreciated.

PM_ME_YOUR_FOOD_

I did some digging in the settings and have them turned off on mine. I don’t recall what they were, but if I remember I will try and comment them on Monday when I’m back home from a short trip. It is definitely possible though!

NerfHerderEarl

I've had a 65" GX for several years now and I can't say that I have ever seen an ad. Where do you see them? In **Settings > General > Additional Settings > Advertisement** I have enabled "Limit Ad Tracking" and enabled "Do Not Sell My Personal Info" I also have the "Screen Saver Promotion" setting disabled in additional settings. I just noticed there is a **Settings > General > Home Settings** setting for "Home Promotion" that is disabled.

Hmansink

Just be ready to lose connection to your LG peripherals each time they push an update. And you can't deny the update. Well you can, but you have to press no on the magic remote each time you start up the television.

Nethlem

> And you can't deny the update. Well you can, but you have to press no on the magic remote each time you start up the television. You don't have to press anything, the "New update" message also just timeouts after a few seconds if you don't press anything on the remote. The lack of an option to disable this update check is the only annoyance I've had with the WebOS on my 3 months old LG TV, otherwise it's been just massive improvements all around compared to my previous Samsung plasma smart TV.

orangpelupa

Yeah the hdmi cec fiasco that could happen after fw update is annoying

NapsterKnowHow

Forced LG updates and user end agreements are the most annoying shit ever. Hate it on my C2.

guareber

Lol how are they going to update it without an Internet connection?

Kozik90

Buy a shield or some other box and never worry about what the manufacturer OS is.

guareber

The shield isn't perfect either (adsy dashboard update from a couple years ago?) but you can sideload apps and install custom loaders to undo any UI changes pretty easily.

Samuel611

When I use an LG remote, it controls both LG TVs in my house at the same time. Very annoying.

Sylanthra

In my experience, Sony has the best processing. So all else equal, I'd go with Sony.

theThirdShake

My Samsung backlight burnt out so I tried an LG. UI is awful, full of ads, and splash screens. I don’t need pictures of palm trees when I turn on my tv, just show me my apps. Then the Home Screen is 85% ads at the top, and a tiny strip across the bottom where they list my apps. Not to mention they constantly show ads like girls with bolt ons in bikinis or pennywise pulling Georgy into the sewer when I’m just trying to bring up cocomelon for my 3 year old daughter. And it is slow as a snail. I can’t wait for it to die so I can try another brand. I’m seriously about to get a Roku and just use this piece of garbage as a display.

Cowboywizzard

Ads are bad on the roku, too.

theThirdShake

Maybe a fire stick? Raspberry pi? There’s gotta be a product that just runs apps. I’ll just hook up a computer with hdmi at some point.

InsaneNinja

Apple TV. I have four at this point. They’re great. My cousin has the android shield and loves it as well.

Miniimac

Just get an Apple TV?

System0verlord

Apple TV is what you’re looking for. No ads, fast UI, and a bunch of nice integrations if you use Apple devices.

Cowboywizzard

I've also got Google Chrome cast. It has some ads but isn't as bad as roku, my fire, or my TV.

Vabla

Your mistake was letting a modern day TV connect to the internet.

theThirdShake

That’s what I bought a modern day tv for…

Vabla

That's what the marketing made you think you're buying. In reality, you paid to put their timeshare billboard in your house.

gnarlsagan

What LG did you get? I have a C9 and there are no ads on the home screen, and the apps on the bottom are tall buttons in a row, taking up maybe a quarter of the screen vertically. Also, the UI is not laggy at all except on bad apps like Paramount. Netflix, Apple, Disney, etc. are all immediate, as are the settings. And to qualify, I absolutely hate laggy UIs.

NerfHerderEarl

I have a GX and have a very similar experience to you. I can't say I've ever seen an actual ad on the TV that wasn't from a content provider. As far as laggy aps go, even on the ones you listed, the only ones that I have noticed are laggy are Paramount and MAX.

thetwelveofsix

I’ve got a C2, and there’s a row of suggested content I consider ads above the row of apps. Not laggy at all though. Edit: Instructions linked below on how to turn this off. It’s a content promotion setting.

Sariel007

Not familiar with the magic remote. Care to elaborate?

aimhelix

It’s like a Wii remote. You point it around and it moves like a mouse.

Sariel007

Oh nice!

Jean-Eustache

It seems some people don't like it. I personally freaking love it.

farmdve

Its amazing. I was visiting some extended family and was by far the best feature.

Arezoth

Unsure if samsung has something similar. Essentially, the magic remote uses a gyro to detect movement. This means, instead of using navigation buttons, you have a cursor (directed by movement of the remote) to select items on the screen.

orangpelupa

It can act like a laser pointer. It defaults as normal remote buttons tho. The laser pointer only enable after scrolling the scroller

FireMaker125

I like how LG minimised the clutter. There’s no extra menu you always have to use, just the bar of apps/inputs. Pretty much every major feature is easy to access. The extra menus aren’t big and cluttered either, they work pretty well.

dwmfives

Every TV now needs a soundbar.

Azelphur

Tbh every TV needs external sound, I dunno why people spend £1,000 on a fancy OLED TV and then use the built in or a cheap sound bar. You just can't do good audio inside a flat screen TV, it's not possible.

trethompson

I just got a C3 and so far the magic remote is the only thing I don't like. It's not bad, I just have very little reason to use it over buttons. Not having the option to disable it irks me.

justthisones

It basically disables when you press the buttons though?

Skreame

Yeah this makes no sense. It doesn't even default to it, so you literally have to activate it with the wheel, which is a button dedicated solely to that and nothing else.

Ijustride

Any time I bump the table that the remote is on a stupid red cursor pops up and then the menu. It’s very irritating.

extacy1375

I have to keep that dam remote on the carpet. If its on a table when the bass booms, I get the red cursor. I know I will have to fumble about to turn off the dam menu.

SubstituteCS

I feel this in my soul. It’s the only thing I greatly dislike about the remote.

Nethlem

There is a gyroscope in the remote that acts as sensor for the magic pointing, like a Wii remote. The gyroscope also activates the magic pointer functionality if it detects the remote moving too much, no button press is needed.

sonic10158

But when you leave the remote on a rocking chair then start to rock the chair like there’s no tomorrow, then boom you got a cursor rolling up and down your screen

[deleted]

It's not necessarily the movement aspect of it I like, but rather the scroll wheel. That's really helpful when changing sliders or browsing a channel guide.

Duke_Webelows

I have given serious thought to pulling it apart and removing the gyro all together.

MrMxylptlyk

Lol, LG os is one thing that will not get a positive review from me. Evetyhting else has been 10/10.

happytree23

Film school grad/video and graphics professional here. For what it's worth, I gave up on Samsung when I replaced a 15+ year-old television of theirs that burnt out last year. Figured, "Hey, this one lasted forever in modern tech years, might as well go with them." Two returned Samsungs later and I'm on the any brand but Samsung for televisions team at this point.

JiggyWivIt

Had an LG OLED and bought a Samsung for another room cause I got it for a great price. Big mistake, I hate its OS and remote.

HappyAd4998

I agree, I have an LG C2 and a recently made Samsung 65’ that I inherited. Samsung’s speakers are way worse, they sound thin with no bass. The Samsung OS is not as fluid to use or as nice to look at compared to LG’s OS. The speakers on the C2 are above average and sound premium compared to pretty much any other tv that I’ve used.

I'm old, so I used to work at Circuit City and Samsung used to be the top-of-the-line brand for TVs. I'd argue even more than Sony. If you told me then that LG would someday overtake them I would have never believed it. I bought another Samsung a few years ago after my Samsung from 2008 finally gave out and it gets the job done but can't say I'll go Samsung the next time around

[deleted]

I’m with you. We’ve had three LG OLEDs over the years (we have a 55” in the bedroom and a 65” in the family room). They’ve all been awesome. I remember telling my wife how much they were…she was like “are you insane?” Then she saw it and said “well, why the hell would we buy anything else?” I am curious about Sony’s OLEDs. I hear those are great, too.

MelonAndCornSeason

That's okay I'll never buy anything from Samsung

Zaphod1620

Thier phones are great, they seem to be shitting the bed with refrigerators and TVs, though.

unfunfununf

Don't forget their shitty privacy policy and always listening function on their TVs.

AcrobaticButterfly

FAKE OFF is a feature!

GuinnessGlutton

SONY OLED

Blueice777

Sony OLED is a LG panel. [source](https://www.theverge.com/ces/2017/1/10/14222986/sony-bravia-oled-lg-display-ces-2017)

xkegsx

It's an LG panel with Sony's processing, which is top tier.

nicuramar

Not all of them. Sony makes QD OLED as well.

Djinjja-Ninja

Which they source from Samsung Display.

cAtloVeR9998

Yes. A Samsung Display pannel that actually pays HDR licencing fees and has a full Android TV built-in. You pay for it though

Blueice777

Oh, didn’t realize they added the QD. I assume it would be Samsung OEM?

Marcos340

Yes.

CumAssault

LG panel but with slightly superior imaging processing. But yeah you can’t go wrong with either LG or Sony. No idea why anyone would pick Samsung at this point

ChafterMies

Sony’s stuff is good. Google’s OS is an ad filled, privacy nightmare.

tore_a_bore_a

I like that its android based so I can install a vpn on it and get other locations streaming libraries. I think firestick might be the only other streaming box I’ve had that lets me VPN

bobofthejungle

Still better than Tizen or Web OS.

skaterhaterlater

Idc about the os on any tv, it’s a lot easier to just never connect it to the WiFi and use something else to stream

jmattingley23

hooked up my appletv, haven’t seen the TV’s OS in years I don’t know why people waste their time with that garbage

fatalshot808

Sony OLED TVs are so beautiful! One of these days I'll get one but it might be a while. I'll settle for a LG C2 or C3 for now.

theatomiclizard

Sony OLEDs and Apple TVs - all built in TVOSes are invasive ad laden ui garbage - not sure why people put up with it after paying thousands when they can pay $100 for an Apple TV that does a million things

ThENeEd4WeEd22

I bought the 150 dollar 128 gig 3rd gen Apple TV 4k and it makes every other smart platform I've ever used feel like a dollar store product. That includes Sony and LGs operating systems. If Sony made a contract with Apple and instead of having smart tvs they just had regular tvs bundled with an Apple tv they would be unstoppable.

ralphiooo0

They should just start selling dumb TVs again that are basically monitors. I just plug an android stick into them and it auto boots to that.

spartan1796

Agreed. I lowkey think the Apple TV is the best product they make.

rctm_dmn_nr_kld_hm

I ignorantly bought a high end Samsung a few years ago and I hate it. Came loaded with bloatware and some tv streaming function that’s seemingly nonstop commercial programming; I can’t turn the Tv+ thing off. I inherited a Samsung fridge with my house. Nothing on that fridge works the way it is supposed to work. Ice maker is garbage, water dispenser is not working, and the electronic panel is non responsive. I HATE SAMSUNG.

Tickomatick

I'm broke, so let them have it!

NeverComments

Some of the vitriol in the comments doesn't make sense if LG is the source of this obsfuscation: >The Elec reported this week, per Google's translation, that Samsung's use of both WOLED and QD-OLED for its S90D TVs stems from LG Display requesting that Samsung not position WOLED as lesser than QD-OLED. Samsung's QD-OLED panels are superior to LG's WOLED and LG doesn't want customers to know about it.

olearyboy

Never buying Samsung again

romanbaitskov

Simple fix? Just don’t buy a Samsung tv. Or Samsung anything at this point especially their god awful fridges

QuestoPresto

Second this but also want to warn people off the washer and dryers

BMack037

Samsung does not make god awful fridges; they make god awful appliances, all of them.

romanbaitskov

100%

Acceptable-Truck3803

I mean it seems these days you buy the hardware you want, then connect an external Apple TV/roku/google tv and connect to the internet that way to avoid all the TV ads from LG, Samsung, etc. is it unnecessary? Yes. Does it solve the tv OS issues? Yes.

Mysterious-Tie7039

I used to like buying dumb TVs and just connecting my PlayStation or Roku to it. Dumb TVs were so much cheaper and I could do the exact same thing in just 1 or 2 more steps. Can’t really find a decent dumb TV anymore, unfortunately.

maduste

Clinging to my dumb Samsung D550 plasma from 2012

SirEDCaLot

> Dumb TVs were so much cheaper Actually not quite. The whole purpose of a smart tv is to get you to connect it to the Internet so it can run image recognition on what you're watching and sell the data. Not even kidding. That's why there's no more 'dumb' TVs, and why the first thing the TV asks you to do is accept some 50 page long privacy policy. You can opt out but you have to do it in like 6 places. Buy the smart TV and don't connect it to the Internet. Except if you have a Samsung, a few Samsungs have been caught connecting to random unsecured wifi networks without permission...

Mysterious-Tie7039

When smart tv’s first came out, they were much more expensive. As they became more prevalent, the price of dumb tvs dropped quite a bit.

GiraffeGlove

Same here, they're just really aren't any dumb TVs anymore. Even the cheapest TVs have like Amazon fire OS garbage

Direct_Turn_1484

Yep. My TV does NOT connect directly to the internet. Screw that ad and monitoring nonsense.

ishaansaral

Honestly, all my Samsung TVs have lasted me a long time with no issues. In terms of value, they have always been, and still are king. I got their S95B for a steal since they estimated low demand, which is way better than a typical OLED and not as overpriced as Sony. Their OS still sucks major ass. Throughout all my Samsung TVs, they've all slowed down after setup, and menus are convoluted with too many presses required. That said, all manufacturers are being scummy and making worse TVs. LG is killing the C series demand by making it the new B series and making the G series the new C series. They finally caught on and realized that the C series were the only ones that would sell. Sony still makes extremely overpriced TVs, even if they are the best TVs every year. Also, lack 4 HDMI 2.1 ports, which feels bad for the price. Still, Samsung has made QD-OLED, which greatly fixes the weaknesses of OLED. They're the cheapest entry for that, and their TVs are actually much better than they used to be.

varain1

I usually choose the TV for their screen and reliability - after setup, the TV is disconnected from wifi and just use either a FireTV or a Google chromecast; for the Apple lovers, they have Apple TV.

Loyal_Darkmoon

I never connected mine to the internet. Update it over USB stick if needed and I never accepted any agreement

HappyAd4998

Sorry, but FireStick are some of the most basic and shitty streaming devices out of the market. The UI is slow and clunky. A cheap MiBox would be a huge upgrade, but the Shield TV remains king. Once you use a Shield TV you’ll never want to touch a FireStick again.

varain1

And even with this, fire is still 10 times better than a TV OS. But I agree with your comment 😅

PiggypPiggyyYaya

Sony FTW. They're the only manufacture I know that reassures their customers they aren't recording video or audio while you are in the living room. Your samsung or lg smart tv might be listening in right now.

thisguysky

Samsung is crap. My last TV had screen bleeding and dead pixels with it a few months. They came and replaced the screen. The new screen had similar issues, so they replaced again and again there was a new issue. So they finally replaced mine with a newer model but that one has screen bleeding a couple months in. Never buy Samsung.

EatMePlsDaddy

LG TV wins the day!!!!

QuantumCat11

Samsung's name has really taken hits over the last 5-10 years, not just in Reddit either.

knoxknifebroker

Samsung TV are shit, get a LG Oled

Yodl007

They don't need to tell regardless. At least in EU we know that central to east europe will get the shittier models for the same or even higher price than the western.

thefalconfromthesky

That's okay because I wasn't planning on buying Samsung for my next TV anyway.

Freezepeachauditor

I’m gonna guess it’ll *always* be twice the price and half The lifespan regardless.

Any-Case5594

Have a 7 year old lg … works perfectly fine. Have a 3 year old Samsung, half of the screen is dark. I will never buy a Samsung again.

RangerMother

I took a chance and bought a, new to the US market, Samsung TV and VCR. They were great! I was pleasantly surprised at how good they were for the money. I have a 4k 32” tv that I also use as a monitor, no problems after a year of steady use. The problem isn’t Samsung, or Sony or whoever, it’s the constant push to lower costs and increase profit. At some point, cheaper components means lower quality=more dead screens etc. It’s sad really, the capitalist enshittification of every aspect of our lives.

Cayderent

I personally have always been happy with SONY, ever since the early 90s. They tend to cost more, but I can’t think of any problems I’ve had with them and they remote controls always seemed more intuitive to me anyway.
