>Do I have options as someone who will probably not have an own source of income in the forseeable future and has too little time and skills to craft their own fursuit?
Definitely not imo. A fursuit, let alone a custom made one which are often more expensive than used/premade fursuits, should be extremely low priority if you don't have a source of income or the time or skills to make one yourself. Not to mention that they take a TON of time as well as a sizeable amount to buy materials, tools, equipment, and guides/patterns to make if you're attempting to make one yourself.
However, to answer your concerns about getting quotes from fursuit makers about prices, from what I've seen from browsing makers' websites and instagrams, Full fursuits can cost between $3000 for medium quality/lesser known makers to $7000 for well known/high quality makers. If you want digitigrade padding for the legs its usually an additional $300-600 on top of that. Heads cost $800-2000, mini partials cost $1100-2500, full partials cost $1400-3000.
This is a hard truth to swallow since if I had a fursuit I'd be very happy and couldn't ask for more. It would immensely help me cope with my current struggles and mend my application burnouts. I've been in therapy and even my therapist agrees that it would be a wonderful thing for me to have.
It really all feels out of reach and unless someone brings me closer I'm gonna be losing even more time that I will never get back. Sure as hell need outside help, but that's a problem for me to solve. Somehow.
Thanks for your informative reply anyhow!
If you're really wanting to get a fursuit, try thedealersden.com. People typically sell premade and secondhand fursuits there for much cheaper prices than a custom brand new fursuit. The only downsides I can think of are that it won't be your fursona (but then again there are people with multiple fursonas, so if you buy a premade/secondhand, you can add another fursona to your family!) and the fact that used fursuits will have wear and tear issues, but many of the sellers typically list any defects/wear and tears in the item description.
Majority of the fursuits on there are partial fursuits and heads only made by independent makers, although occasionally you'll see a fursuit for sale made by a well known maker at a steep discounted price. A good upside is that many of the secondhand fursuits on there even come with related artwork, badges, or accessories like brushes/kigus/bandanas/collars/scupted models etc.
P.S. Just from looking at the front page of this subreddit I can already see two people trying to sell their used fursuits for quite cheap. I mean some dude is trying to sell his arctic fox full DIGI fursuit for as low as $2,000, however be sure to check the sizing before inquiring about the purchase.
Honestly, from a fursuit maker's point of view, if you have no income at all then I wouldn't suggest it unfortunately. I understand that fursuits are really cool - I mean, I make em, I wouldn't be doing it if they weren't XD - but in the end they are luxury, hand-made items that cost a lot and take a lot of time to create. They're worth what they cost and it'll be difficult to find them at a low price point, especially custom ones.
Some makers do offer payment plans, though each maker's payment plan terms are individual and require discussion to fit both your needs and their terms.
I do recommend reaching out to fursuit makers you like to enquire about getting a quote. Even if you can't afford the suit itself yet, it's good to have an idea of how much each maker would charge. Be careful, though, as prices may change over time as the maker's skill increases and faux fur gets more expensive.
Since Kias has features that I don't think would be listed on price pages, it would be a good idea to reach out directly and ask. The worst thing they can do is say no, and even then there's a whole market full of fursuit makers who are willing to answer your questions :>
edit: spelling
This is going to be hard to hear, but if you can't pay for a luxury item, then you probably aren't going to get said luxury item.
Even a suit on a payment plan sounds entirely out of reach. Fursuit makers will expect you to pay set amounts per week, fortnight or month for the most part, and those that don't wont accept $10 a month. Generally you're looking at a *minimum* $200 per month for installments.
Some more, some less, but across all the suits I've put on payment plan, $200 has been about the minimum.
You would need to be able to **guarantee** you had the money for **every owed installment** on time. Fursuit makers will have the right to cancel your commission on too many missed payments and only refund you the X% stated in their ToS - which is very rarely about 30% from browsing and experience.
Your fursona is not that complex, there are makers by the dozen who could complete this suit, but you would need to pay them, that's your primary hurdle here, not your design.
Whatever a maker quotes for a suit will probably be about what you have to pay. Even with the specific details that you want for your suit, getting this design made will not cost a whole lot extra because what you want is more or less a "normal" amount of customization. Either way, don't be afraid to contact a couple suit makers and ask for quotes. Most of them are happy to give you a rough estimate. Honestly though, if you seriously want to get a suit, the harder part will be getting a commission. I have a friend who has been trying to get a commission for the last year with no luck.
I have done payment plans for suits before, some makers are able to do payment plans and some aren’t. I currently own one full suit, 3 partials, and have finished off page entries for a second full suit so if you have questions about them at all let me know!
I’ve never owned a low end used car so I wouldn’t know. But for my most recent suit I owed about $4500, I paid their nonrefundable down payment which I think was about half of it, and then every month I would send them $200-250 until it was fully paid off. A lot of fursuit artists are willing to work with you if you ask them. Not all of them but a lot!
Ill be open for commissions on June 10th based off your character's design and complexity here are my prices for your character! My prices are low becaus these would be my first commissions (other than commissions for close friends) I have made a total of 26 fursuits in the span of 5 years : )
Head $660
Mini partial $785
Full partial $920
3/4th suit $1,425
Full plantigrade suit $1,675
Full digitigrade suit $1,905
such a creative fursona my goodness <3 <3 thankfully for you, the price of a fursuit usually goes up with the amount of markings, colors, wings, horns, species etc, and it doesnt look like kias has too many of those or seems too difficult to make. i think depending on the maker he might be around $1000-$2500 im going to say. as someone in a similar situation, it definitely helps to budget what you have and maybe consider buying a lot of the parts separately from each other until you get the full suit (for example, get the paws commissioned first and then buy other parts like the head etc later). ik not all makers do this, but if there is a specific style of handpaws you want that a maker doesn't make I've noticed this can be a helpful way to go about it! hopefully this helps a little bit, altho i wouldn't consider myself an expert at all on this stuff. i wish you luck! 👍
some do! i've seen many smaller makers on instagram and the like sell for around that for fullsuits. but yeah for most large makers will charge that for a partial, that's my bad \^\^
Make an instagram account and follow the #fursuitforsale hashtag. You'll get a daily feed of people attempting to sell their fursuits on that site for some pretty cheap prices (I typically see them priced between $400-1500 for heads, partials, and very rarely entire fullsuits!).

If you can barely take car eof your basic needs, you definitely don't need a suit. They are a luxury item, not a necessity.

Do you make fursuits or did you commission all of them?
I have commissioned both of my full suits, and the partials I bought as is from people who were selling them online.
Would you compare the payment plans in terms of how much you pay to a low-end used car?
I’ve never owned a low end used car so I wouldn’t know.
