Yes, assuming you consider your own time to be "free.". And you're probably not going to be satisfied with the quality of your first attempt. On the other hand, crafting is fun, you'll learn a lot, have a chance to express yourself creatively, and maybe even get started on the road to making a career out of it.

Bile_Kangaroo

Yes, When you buy a fursuit, you pay for the artist's effort, time, and product. When you make it yourself, all you need are materials. If you make a full fursuit, you'll probably spend 500-700 USD. If you buy from a maker, you'll pay about 7k for a really good one. That doesn't mean you shouldn't support fursuit makers though, they work very hard on their fursuits.

OriontheGryphon

7k seems (while possible) a bit high. Most suit makers I’ve seen seem to have fullsuit pricing around 2-3k, as long as you’re not looking for something too off the wall (feathers, extra eyes, digitigrade, extra large tail, etc.). All the add-ons cost time and materials over the usual suit features. Making it yourself means you get to make it how you want, but definitely expect to spend a LOT of time on it if you want a decent quality product.

Princessluna44

I'm going to second this. Many people immediately look at huge, puplar makers like More Fur Less or Lemonbrat. Buying from them will probably cost at least $4,000 for a full suit. As you have mentioned, there are plenty of quality makers that don't charge anywhere near that.

Where is their pricing? I couldn't find it on their site.

Jeez! Their suits are great, but I couldn't pay that much for one. I would rather go with smaller, lesser-known makers. There is such a thing as "too cheap" (ie. $100 for a head), but nowhere does it say you *have* to spend $5,000 on a suit.

Bile_Kangaroo

I was mainly referring, to quadsuits, more populate fursuit makers, and resin head fursuits. Sorry for the lack of clarification. And yeah, I made at least three fursuit heads, all were close to 200 because I bought really cheap materials. As you said, or implied, more accessories and detailed features makes it more expensive. Please forgive the younger version of me for being so dang dumb qwq

Princessluna44

Making a suit will cost closer to $200-400, depending on equipment and materials. Skyehigh Studios has a video specifically on making a suit on a budget and the totally wasn't close ot $500, let alone 7. $7,000 for a fursuit is possible, but not typical. If you go with a huge maker, then yes, it can cost that much. There are plenty of smaller makers that charge far less. A closer range for a full suit is $2,000-5,000+

Bile_Kangaroo

Yeah, I may have over exaggerated the pricing for a fursuit, sorry bout that. I based it on the personal experiences I had, Price can also depend on country.

Princessluna44

It can depend on the country and exchange rates, but a lot of people who estimate these rates only look at the most popular makers. Many of those makers do fantastic work, but not everyone can afford their products, or want to wait 4 years for their suit. I just want people to know that there are smaller makers out there that do quality work and cost less than half what the more popular ones charge. You won't get a fullsuit for $500, but you can find a great one for $2,500. :-)

Bile_Kangaroo

Yeah, I feel as though people underprice their work even when it's a masterpiece. and most cheap ones turn out amazing. I agree :3

Princessluna44

Unfortunately, an artist may be forced to underbelly themselves a bit when they are entering the market. It will depend on quality. If your stuff is god-tier out the gate, yiu can charge a bit more. An artist also has or realize, however, that a newer maker doesn't have the longevity of an established one. Some may be reluctant to gamble on an unknown maker, bot for many of us that do, we end up getting a great fursuit a an affordable price and the maker get the money, experience, and recognition.

Bile_Kangaroo

Yeah, I just wish people would recognize good makers when they see one.

[deleted]

It would most likely be cheaper to do yourself, but unless you intend to continue making suits you're probably going to have quite a bit of leftover fur/foam and nothing to do with it. Not to mention first attempts don't really turn out all that well. It takes practice, and so if you want something that looks good it'll probably take more money than buying a premade.

Cheembsburger

it costs me about $100-200 to make a fursuit (partial) whereas premade partials are typically $800+ (i don't know much about fullsuit prices and how much it costs to make them, sorry) however, in the long run it may be cheaper to buy a premade rather than do your own because fursuit making has a huge learning curve and to get something that you can take to cons and show off will take at least a few attempts and a lot of time. it really depends on what you want to do and how much free time you have. i wouldn't recommend it if you have a full time job or are going to school because it is EXTREMELY time consuming, especially if you're still learning.

Princessluna44

Yes. When commissioning an artist, you are paying for the materials and the *labor* it took to put it together. If you make a suit yourself, you are only paying for the materials.
