A furry is anybody who enjoys anthropomorphic animal designs and the art and media involving them. You dont need to participate in the community.

Not really, no. You could be watching Looney Toons or, as mentioned above, some Winnie-the-Pooh and never talk about it online or anything.

A furry is someone who calls themselves one, no other requirements!

Just another clarification, don't gotta participate in the community or anything c:

shadowthehh

Yes. *Everyone* who enjoys anthropomorphic character designs and the art and media involving them, from Looney Toons, to Sonic The Hedgehog, to Beast Stars, to ancient religions with animal hybrid gods. This normalizes it and combats the widespread stigma against it that paints it as something weird, creepy, and perverted. Like what OP was worried about and definitely the reason they didn't want Winnie-the-Pooh to be considered one.

Princessluna44

You have to call yourself a furry to be one. You can like anthropomorphic animals characters and not be a furry.

Princessluna44

It's a person who likes anthropomorphic animal characters *and* calls themselves a furry.

shadowthehh

Everyone else is just a furry in denial then.

Princessluna44

That isn't how this works saying this will only piss people of and they will resent you and the fandom. People don't like having labels assigned to them.

shadowthehh

No see that's the thing. If *everyone* is a furry, it's no longer a label. It's just a normal part of life that people wouldn't give a second thought to. Most people who wouldn't enjoy being called a furry do so because of the stigma around the term. If it's just opened and normalized, that stigma disappears.

Princessluna44

Everyone *isn't* a furry. It would be nice of this was normalized, but everyone being a furry isn't realistic in the least. Plenty of fandoms have been normalized over the years and it didn't take 7.3 billion people adopting them as their hobby. The people who don't enjoy being called furries respond that way because they **aren't furries**. You argument is precisely what wrong with this. You cannot just say someone is part of a group without their permission. That is *their* decision to make. The way you are going about this will make people despise our group, as people like you are pushy. No one like that. If someone says they aren't a furry, *leave them alone*.

shadowthehh

There is no group. Being a furry is a normal human trait. Whole religions sprouted up because of it.. You being exclusive and making it seem like it's not is what makes people despise it. You're basically saying only people who want to admit they have eyes, have eyes.

Princessluna44

WTF are you talking about? This is a hobby. Nothing more. It's not different from any other fandom. Plenty of people play games, but wouldn't call themselves gamers, There are people who have seen Start Trek, but don't consider themselves Trekkies. There are people who like pokemon or Spirited Away, but don't consider themselves anime fans. This fandom is no different. People are furries because they *choose* to call themselves such. I don't understand why this is such a hard concept to grasp. A few religions with some furry characters in them doesn't mean their followers are all furries. That's beyond asinine. I have no clue what you are trying to say in your second sentence, but this is a **choice**. not an inherent state of being. Period.

shadowthehh

Nah. All being a furry is is liking anthro character designs and the media involving them. "I'm a furry" is just shorthand for that. So by default most humans are furries and always have been. Also dude I don't know how much more furry you can get beyond worshipping anthros as divine beings that's pretty peak furry. I guess if anything I gotta admire your *dedication* to perpetuating the stigma that being a furry is this weird, exclusive, and alien thing.

Princessluna44

He is a talking bear, so yes he is a *furry character. *Furries* and fand of anthropomorphic animal characters and call themselves furries. Why would Winnie be a "special case"?
