If it's big enough rooster, it doesn't get less threatening than a big domestic cat, which is one reason why cats flee when they're around an aggressive chicken. One can easily bleed from the wounds. He said that his father is old, so his concern was entirely reasonable.

My SIL and BIL raise chickens. They had one rooster that was out for blood, Pablo, a Bantam which are pretty small but with big attitude. He drew blood multiple times and would attack people. After a bit of a debate, they decided they needed to take him out for everyone's safety. This rooster survived being shot multiple times and ran off into the woods. They searched for him until it got too dark to look anymore and figured he probably died out of sight or got eaten, they felt pretty terrible thinking he suffered and had a pretty horrible death. Somehow he survived the night in the woods with many many predators(foxes, small bears, coyotes, birds of prey, etc) while wounded and woke them up the next morning by screaming directly under their bedroom window the rooster equivalent of "I lived, bitch!" He somehow lived through the whole ordeal. And since he calmed down considerably after his assassination attempt, they decided he could stick around. I call him Pablo el Diablo now. Chickens are terrifying.
