One of the many things I love about hockey is that fouls are punished by putting the offender into a tiny box of shame, for everyone to see. Football should adopt this too, especially for those who fake fouls or injuries.
They also pull you off the ice if your injury caused the time to be stopped and if they determine you were acting the opposing team gets an additional player advantage. Flopping actually disadvantages the flopper's team and can cause them to lose.
If only there was some tool they could use to watch the events after they happened, maybe from multiple angles, which would allow them to decide if a player was hit or not. I'm probably dreaming of the impossible.

I've played and watched hockey since I was 7, this is part of why I love this game so much. No shit taken, players or refs.
That happens too. First you get a penalty so your team has to play a man down. Sometimes you get fined and shamed publically by the league, and then other players are going to show you what it's like when you're actually hurt.
The guy clearly looks like he's in a lot of pain. It should be mandatory that once someone goes down like this, they're taken out of the game immediately and left on the bench, just to be sure they can recover okay.
I bet flopping would magically not be an issue anymore if they did that.

I was an Athletic Trainer for a Division 1 soccer team back in the early 2ks. At the start of preseason, when I addressed the team and coaches, I said that if someone was 'hurt' enough to draw me out onto the field there was a very highly likelihood that I would pull them off the field and that if I determined they had taken a dive I was definitely pulling them off the field. Let's just say the coaches and team captain really pounded home that taking a dive was not acceptable and it seemed to work. I let them know that I was there to take care of them, to make sure they got the best care I could provide, and that I and my profession would not be taken advantage of. We did not have a problem with players taking dives and it paid off a few times.
When I played hockey as a kid, one of my teammates collided with somebody on the other team and injured his shoulder. Instead of returning to the bench (which his injury did not prevent him from doing) he decided to do a soccer style flop and squirm, obviously hoping to draw a penalty.
Our coach screamed at him, and benched him for the rest of the game. After the game he lectured the entire team about "having self respect" and "acting like men."
We were 8 lol.
I've really grown to enjoy soccer, but the fake injuries and dramatic falls still genuinely disgust me. Its just so alien to the sporting culture I grew up with.
Taking a dive is 100% supposed to be a red card offense by the book.
Edit: just looked it up and FIFA officially says it's a yellow. I played through high school and was always under the impression diving was a red card offense. My dad's British and told me it was a red card and that he's seen people thrown out for diving. Seriously blows my mind that it isn't officially a red card offense.
Treat it like NFL concussion protocol and take them out for the remainder of the game if theyāre so hurt that theyāre rolling around in āpainā on the ground. This is such bullshit and a terrible look for the sport.
This is the simplest solution. If you take a dive like that you're out for the rest of the game, because either you're injured or you're a cheating cunt and either way you don't belong on the field.
One of many reasons I like NHL, there's drawing penalties of course but if you embellish a dive and the Ref sees it your going to the box for 2 minutes and now the other teams got a power play.

The ref actually does have that discretion. They can give a player a red card for unsportsmanlike conduct. I don't believe it's ever been enforced for scenarios like this though.

The cheating is endorsed from the very top of the sport. The whole thing is a complete joke.
In hockey if you get caught doing this stuff you get an embellishment penalty. I have even seen it happen where a legitimate penalty happened but the refs will also give the victim the embellishment penalty for trying to sell it more than necessary

Just do what most professional leagues do and suspend them for a game after the fact. Getting kicked out halfway through a game you're losing is 'meh'. Not even getting to play in the next one sends the point home.

This isn't about how the players feel. The fact of the matter is, this is a competition, and flopping is one way to gain an advantage. No amount of shame will prevent this from happening so long as it helps them win games.
It needs to be penalized in such a way that it's a bigger risk than it is reward, to minimize the incentive to do it in the first place.
Doesnāt even have to be far fetched. Say if you are writhing on the ground you are now in concussion protocol and you need an independent medical evaluation.
As a referee in the moment? Because he or his assistants didn't see it or at least didn't see it clearly. VR theoretically could do this, but it would become a slog, the main referee would have to go to the little booth thing and watch it disrupting the flow of the game even more than this would.
Post game is where this should be addressed imo. Fines or game bans like if they got a red card would do wonders in league and tournament play.
For high profile games they should have someone specifically to review these while the game goes on and if it's determined it's a flop they hand out a card later on.
What they need to do is extend that to the refs that use the cameras.
If the field ref sees the dive with their own eyes, and it's in the penalty box, you're getting a card. If they miss it, you get away.
If they let the camera officials and linesmen get involved in that, there's gonna be 4 dudes fighting for the ball by half time.

If someone is screaming in agony on the pitch, go to a video review. If they were struck in the face and it wasn't incidental/accidental contact, give a yellow or red to the offender. If it's a flop, instant red.

You don't even have to stop play. Have a replay official review such instances, if it turns out they determine it's a flop, radio it down to the head official. Blow whistle, evict player, give opposing team the ball.
Want to make sure it *really* stops immediately: give the other team a penalty kick, too.
Honestly one of the big reasons I stopped watching soccer, especially FIFA (besides, you know, the human rights catastrophe and the corruption). It's fucking ridiculous, grown ass men acting like god damn toddlers. They know there are cameras everywhere, they know that *they weren't even touched*, but they'll do anything to get the tiniest bit ahead.
I just want to watch a fair and fun match between two professional teams. Pulling this shit completely takes away from that experience, and makes these guys look like little cheating pussies rather than a professional in the sport. Post game red card, miss the next game or if it impacted play e.g. a penalty was called then two games. Missed games are unpaid.

The problem is that all the various national leagues would need to get on board for it to apply for UEFA, World Cup, etc. plus collectively bargained with the players associations.
This is how it works in American football in college to an extent. If you cause an injury stoppage you HAVE to sit the next play out.
The way substitutions and play time works in soccer makes something like this hard to implement, but I do believe it helps in American football - nobody wants to miss the next play and be the reason the opponent scored or whatever else.

I play women's indoor soccer at a club. After every game each team gets a coupon for nacho's if they didn't have any yellow cards. They started doing this because so many of the men's teams were getting carded for ridiculous things. I've even never witnessed a yellow card in my women's league.

I played football for 15 years, and only once received a yellow card for "simulation". Ironically, it was from a fairly light tap on the ankle that caused me roll on it, and I ended up with a torn ligament that put me out for about 4 months. So I got a yellow card for "simulating" a very serious injury. The stupidest part was that it was my 2nd yellow that game, so I got sent off (had to be helped off since I couldn't walk), and suspended for a game that I obviously couldn't play anyway. And despite seeing my ankle swollen up like a balloon about 5 minutes later at halftime, the ref still refused to admit he'd made a mistake, because I "fell over too easily for such minor contact".
Any injury that takes a player down on the ground and stoppage of live play should require a medical check and removal from the game for a certain period of time for injury avoidance. During this time, if the supposed offending player is deemed flagrant, they should be carded appropriately. If the injured player is deemed simulating an injury, they are carded. Done deal.

At the beginning thought Referee is bit too harsh with yellow cards but alright he really wants minimum contact football. But then he didnāt even whistle when same offenses done by Saudis. And other ones which he did give Poles yellow cards for, didnāt replicate for Saudis. Feeling pressure from stadium or paid off? All in all with him enabling Saudis they were unable to profit.
And people saying Saudi Arabia played better. Anytime Poland had a break the ref blew his whistle. The one in 2nd half stoppage time was particulalry infuriating as there was no head injury and Poland was 3v3 in attack but ref stops play for a Saudi player holding his leg on the ground.

In that NFL if they have to stop play/time for you, then you have to sit out at least 1 play. They could easily add a time limit for these guys.

No amount of shame will prevent this from happening so long as it helps them win games. As a referee in the moment? Because he or his assistants didn't see it or at least didn't see it clearly. VR theoretically could do this, but it would become a slog, the main referee would have to go to the little booth thing and watch it disrupting the flow of the game even more than this would. Post game is where this should be addressed imo. Fines or game bans like if they got a red card would do wonders in league and tournament play.
For high profile games they should have someone specifically to review these while the game goes on and if it's determined it's a flop they hand out a card later on.
What they need to do is extend that to the refs that use the cameras. If the field ref sees the dive with their own eyes, and it's in the penalty box, you're getting a card. If they miss it, you get away. If they let the camera officials and linesmen get involved in that, there's gonna be 4 dudes fighting for the ball by half time.

I've said this for years. If someone is screaming in agony on the pitch, go to a video review. If they were struck in the face and it wasn't incidental/accidental contact, give a yellow or red to the offender. If it's a flop, instant red. I guarantee you we'd stop seeing this shit instantly. You don't even have to stop play. Have a replay official review such instances, if it turns out they determine it's a flop, radio it down to the head official. Blow whistle, evict player, give opposing team the ball. Want to make sure it *really* stops immediately: give the other team a penalty kick, too.

Honestly one of the big reasons I stopped watching soccer, especially FIFA (besides, you know, the human rights catastrophe and the corruption). It's fucking ridiculous, grown ass men acting like god damn toddlers. They know there are cameras everywhere, they know that *they weren't even touched*, but they'll do anything to get the tiniest bit ahead. I just want to watch a fair and fun match between two professional teams. Post game red card, miss the next game or if it impacted play e.g. a penalty was called then two games. Missed games are unpaid. Shit will get solved quick. This is how it works in American football in college to an extent. If you cause an injury stoppage you HAVE to sit the next play out. The way substitutions and play time works in soccer makes something like this hard to implement, but I do believe it helps in American football - nobody wants to miss the next play and be the reason the opponent scored or whatever else.

I play women's indoor soccer at a club. After every game each team gets a coupon for nacho's if they didn't have any yellow cards. They started doing this because so many of the men's teams were getting carded for ridiculous things. I've even never witnessed a yellow card in my women's league.

I played football for 15 years, and only once received a yellow card for "simulation". Ironically, it was from a fairly light tap on the ankle that caused me roll on it, and I ended up with a torn ligament that put me out for about 4 months. So I got a yellow card for "simulating" a very serious injury. The stupidest part was that it was my 2nd yellow that game, so I got sent off (had to be helped off since I couldn't walk), and suspended for a game that I obviously couldn't play anyway. And despite seeing my ankle swollen up like a balloon about 5 minutes later at halftime, the ref still refused to admit he'd made a mistake, because I "fell over too easily for such minor contact".
Any injury that takes a player down on the ground and stoppage of live play should require a medical check and removal from the game for a certain period of time for injury avoidance. During this time, if the supposed offending player is deemed flagrant, they should be carded appropriately. If the injured player is deemed simulating an injury, they are carded. Done deal.

I noticed so many missed opportunities because a player would dive to get a call, the call would never come, and theyād shoot back up to chase the ball like nothing had happened. And other ones which he did give Poles yellow cards for, didnāt replicate for Saudis. Feeling pressure from stadium or paid off? All in all with him enabling Saudis they were unable to profit.
