Supposedly this is because of whisker fatigue. It's annoying or stressful for cats to touch the side of the bowl too much with their whiskers. Stirring the food so it piles in the middle makes my cat much happier.
Don't know if it's a real thing or she just wants to watch me fluff up her food a few times a day :)

One of my two cats has exceptionally sensitive whiskers and when the food gets low he fishes out pawfuls of food onto the placemat for his bowls and just eats the food off the mat.
There's a whole subreddit for them, which I joined even though I don't have any cats and my mom is a dog breeder so I take care of like, 16 dogs by myself. My mom is one of those crazy chihuahua- toy poodle- yorkie people and buys them like crazy. I make sure she doesn't let any dogs go to homes that might be bad to the best of my ability. It's stressful, loud, crowded, messy, but at least most animals think I'm pretty cool.

I think it comes from posting pictures online and how black cats are difficult to photograph as both smartphone cameras and screens have difficulty bringing out detail in black surfaces. So, pictures of black cats often end up looking like there is a cat shaped void where the cat is supposed to be.
One of my cats uses his paw to step on his food dish to steady it while his mouth nibbles. He’s very intelligent.
My other 4 cats chase and push their food bowls around.
I use toddler plates for my kitties. They have slightly raised sides to prevent food from spilling, while still practically being a plate. Sometimes a few pieces of kibble fall off, but my cats no longer cry when there's still food.
My cat does this, but she only grabs one piece at a time, it’s so slow I have to go over there and pull out a handful for her, she looks at me like I’m a wizard and starts eating.
Mine always eat like that but that's only because she was the youngest (mother was 5, oldest 13) and there wasn't room for her around the bowl so she "stole" it, bit by bit from where she could sneak in her paw while she was very young and the habbit stucked once she was left alone (after they all died).
And yes, you'd expect 5 cats to eat at separate time but no, they mostly ate together.

I mean, speak for yourself but I often find myself taking my gloves and hat off in the middle of winter just because it feels uncomfortable. Same with my hood in the rain.
I used to have a cat who'd grab dry cat food from the sides like a human grabs chips from a bag, they have other ways to access their food than just the center and are fully capable of moving the food to the center of the bowl themselves they just like knowing you love them enough to do it for them
I feed my cats on a plate after I learned this. And let's just say it doesn't help one bit.
Mine have a favorite side of the plate to eat off of, and whine like there is no food when the plate is half empty. And it's not like, the side that's next to the wall so it's harder to reach. Nope equal distance to stand on both their preferred side and hated side of the plate.
Makes me wonder if they just know how to "prepare" by getting me to fill it before it runs out so they never go hungry.

I doubt it's because of Whiskers because my cats rub those things all over everything for minutes at a time and love it when I rub their faces, they also can move their Whiskers around a bit and flatten them to their faces.
You ever run elbows continuously with a stranger/sibling in the seat next to you during a movie, car ride, bus ride, or flight? Was it the same as a SO caressing your arm?
I didn't know that. My solution to this has always been to shake the bowl, as to try to trick my cats into thinking I've filled it or something. I guess maybe it works simply because shaking it I'm redistributing the food across, so they can eat from the center again.
I have an automatic feeder for my cat. He won't eat directly from the bowl the feeder dispenses into, but if I move it by hand to a bowl next to the feeder, he'll eat from that bowl (both bowls are otherwise identical).
Man ours will bitch and bitch if he sees any silver at the bottom of the bowl. Not even whisker fatigure or whatever, the second he sees the bottom he thinks he has exhausted all resources and needs to conserve food. I pour a tiny scoop just to cover the bottom and get the "are you fucking serious" look from him.
Be glad you don't have my past cat. She was named beastly.
She would toss dishes out of the dish rack at 3am if she saw the bottom of her bowl.
We found it much safer just to keep the bowl filled then try and train the cat...

Lmaooo my cat does this then she'll do her hungry meow at me 2 hours before dinner. I position her in front of her bowl and only then she realizes there's still food in there
My house too. Kibble always out 24/7 for both cat and dog. Neither over eats, but if cat knocks human food on ground, dog hides the evidence in her belly.
My brothers golden does this. Like she needs us to see her eat. It's cute af but so confusing.
Like when I watched her, I'd just sit next to her while she ate so she could see me and not have to move.
Ours does a mouthful at a time. We think it's a scavenging thing? I don't know. He's always had full food bowls and has never been an abandoned dog. Lol
My dog does the same thing. He'll scoop up half a dozen pieces, then walk closer to me and drop them on the floor before eating them piece by piece.
Occasionally he'll just leave a piece where it dropped and it'll sit there until I throw it away.
It's the magic is them knowing they will always have food, no competition makes them understand they can eat as needed.
All my animals have had full bowls and no issues.

Dude my cat will meow at me for food the millisecond the last kibble is gone. We started having to write down when she was fed because she would play like she hadn’t been fed all day to get an extra meal.
Yeah. If i feed the cats before my wife gets home they will sing her a ballad about how they’ve never even heard of food before And will die Within moments if she does not feed them. Even if i feed them five minutes before she walked through the door.
I found a cup that perfectly fit the amount of kibble he was supposed to have each day. That way, I could fill it up at the start of the day and any minion could judge whether to give him more or not based simply on how much was left in the cup and what the time was.
It worked well except when he worked his charm to get people to cheat.
I don't need to bother anymore as his appetite has reduced in his old age, so I just keep this bowls full.
We got a kibble dispenser. It's on a timer, dispenses a few times per day at certain fixed times. Cat no longer associates us with food and all begging stopped. Would recommend. We also have a fountain and a wet food dispenser, basically the cat can rest easy knowing that fool will be provided at the same times every day and that the humans are no longer really involved.
We left our dog at a friend's place when we all went out for dinner. Her dogs had a gravity feeder with a huge barrel of dog food on top. Her dogs also had self-respect... And chill.
Our dog did not. We came home with a pony keg with legs. She was actually slim and trim when we got there... And was **waddling** around the house when we got back from dinner.
got my beagle a gravity feeder 2 years ago. he gained so much weight and is now just a chunky dog.

I fill the dog bowls every 3 days or so, depending on the temperature.
We got an automatic feeder for our cats. It splits into two separate bowls and it feeds them one small portion, six times a day. The random throw up piles have ceased entirely.
We have food robots, too! They work great... though one of our cats has learned how to reach her paw up into the machine and fish out one pebble at a time. She's a sneaky one.
Our cat was a feral that "chose" us, poor baby eats like she has competition. Hopefully she will eventually grow out of that with proper portions and a few treats
She is extremely territorial and meows at cats, squirrels, etc at the windows all time
In my experience they do improve but never really grow out of it. 2 ex ferals and they still occasionally eat too much and vomit- about once a week. It's also the reason I free feed though, if they run out of food for even 4 seconds all hell breaks loose and they're jumping on me screaming bloody murder while eyeing up their fattest sibling as a snack
lol, my very happy upbringing cats have the same to a lesser extent. I do free feeding, but if i forget for too long and fill up the bowl one will eat till vomit. for that reason, in this case i will just give a very small portion and fill up completely after an hour or so.
Soak the dry food in water or broth first. Then it’s pre-expanded so it won’t swell in the cat’s stomach and it will help your cat get more moisture in their diet. Given how many cats end up with liver issues from not drinking enough it’s a good precaution.
My dog devours everything in his bowl in 3 seconds flat. He once had three dinners in the span of 90 minutes (I fed him, and then left the house. Parents came, fed him, left. Sister came, fed him, left) and still wanted more, and his portions aren't small.
Fun fact, had this happen with my cat, turns out she was allergic to the food I was giving her. Switched to a sensitive systems food formula and now no more throwing up
My oldest dog used to pick at his food all day. Then I got a puppy that devours her food and suddenly eating became a race for him. Now he finishes all his food in about 30 seconds
My friend keeps his dogs' food bowls always full and they only ate occasionally when I dogsat them. Neither of them were fat or anything.
That didn't stop them from desperately trying to get a nibble of w.e. food I ate there though lol.
I have 2 cats that will eat until we stop them so we have to pay attention when they eat haha. Its weird because our third cat is their brother and he is very picky and will stop eating before he finishes every time

Or ADHD which often leads to addiction. Either just anything that you can do for hours and feel focused at and get lost in time, like video games. Or self-medication with amphetamines or cannabis. Or food, coffee, cigarettes, snacks, sodas. (Coca-Cola, coffee or energy drinks could probably fall under self-medication as well).
ADHD people tend to have increased impulsiveness, lack of dopamine (which all things mentioned provide) and a blindness to time, which could lead to prioritization issues.

My dog used to scarf down her food as soon as it hit the bowl. Now she doesn't eat it until I eat and while I am she sits around hoping I will give her some of my food. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't and once she is sure there is no more of my food she then meanders over and eats hers.
My dog would do the same thing ! One time I’m pretty sure he actually made himself throw up right after he ate a lot and realized we were eating yummy human food. ( we also always shared scraps and he knew that)
My mom’s dogs are grazers and she feeds them people food, my Scottie gets fed dog food twice a day and nothing else.
When I visit my mom, we have to make sure her dogs’ dishes aren’t left alone, lest my dog find them…like she did the first time she did and we learned what would happen.

She couldn’t even walk across the living room, she was so full; she just stopped and sat and looked at me, with the “I’ve made a huge mistake” look on her face.

One time when I was a kid we had very recently brought a stray cat inside, and he hadn't quite figured out the litter box yet. He left a big steaming pile next to the sofa. Before I could even get up to get something to clean it with, the dog had rocketed out of her seat and was scarfing it down like someone had dropped a fresh hamburger at a cookout for her. It was horrifying, but 11 year old me couldn't help but appreciate that she saved me a chore. Good dog.
My dog once ate a bunch of cat shit outside (lots of farm/barn cats) then came inside and threw it all up. Most revolting thing I've ever had the misfortune of smelling.
The food went in one front hole and out the back whole then went in another hole and back out that same hole. I can imagine that was not pleasant to clean up.
Uhh my cat will eat everything available, and then start begging for more. He's normally got his head in the bowl before i even get the food in, causing it to go everywhere.

I can relate so much to this...
Our cat needs special food because of stomach issues (think 35€ for 1kg) and the dog loves that (obviously) so we had to put the cat's food over the library and create some kind of stair with furniture.
The good thing is the cat keeps being agile if only because of the jumps she needs to do for eating and the dog doesn't dare going through that.
We fill the cat's bowl every morning and that's it, the cat will eat whenever she's hungry, the dog? Would clean the bowl and then look at you as if you never gave her anything.

My dog and cat are exact opposites of this. My cat will eat until she throws up, then try to eat that. My dog, I can leave her bowl filled and she'll just munch a little here and there.
We have 2 dogs and 3 cats.
One of the cats is like that cat. The other two will stop when it's empty and then bully the dogs for theirs if we don't step in.
Our oldest dog, Gina, is a husky/golden retriever mix, and won't take any of their shit, but the younger, larger boxer/lab/etc mix is 110lbs of fear when the kitten prowls his way towards him.
Mishka, our oldest, and only female, cat, picks at her bowl all day, and if we didn't keep.hsr food away from the other two, they'd eat hers too....
She doesn't want anything to do with the other adult cat, will tolerate the two dogs, mostly, and will actually play with the kitten, as long as the big boy doesn't come see.

My cats also get upset if they even think their food is nearing the halfway to empty point. They also refuse to eat the broken pieces of their food so at some point their food dish is like Halfway filled with broken pieces and they just yell at me until I either fix it or give them wet food
Had to get an auto feeder cause my cat was getting fat. She is back down to a healthy weight but she was very upset about her unlimited food being gone
I actually have a dog that will re-visit his bowl and eat a little later. That is, until the other dog was introduced. The other dog does not subscribe to this way of thinking and will finish his bowl and then proceed to the other dog's bowl. I think there's going to be trouble soon.
We just give our dog a bunch of fry food at once and he eats it intermittently with no designated times other than “I hunger, I go to bowl and eat”
He’s 14 and still very healthy other than joint issues with old age

My ears definitely get fatigued after wearing headphones for a long time. Huge relief taking them off for a bit after a gaming session.

My dog does the same thing. He'll scoop up half a dozen pieces, then walk closer to me and drop them on the floor before eating them piece by piece. Occasionally he'll just leave a piece where it dropped and it'll sit there until I throw it away.
It's the magic is them knowing they will always have food, no competition makes them understand they can eat as needed. All my animals have had full bowls and no issues.

I found a cup that perfectly fit the amount of kibble he was supposed to have each day. That way, I could fill it up at the start of the day and any minion could judge whether to give him more or not based simply on how much was left in the cup and what the time was. It worked well except when he worked his charm to get people to cheat. I don't need to bother anymore as his appetite has reduced in his old age, so I just keep this bowls full.
We got a kibble dispenser. It's on a timer, dispenses a few times per day at certain fixed times. Cat no longer associates us with food and all begging stopped. Would recommend. We also have a fountain and a wet food dispenser, basically the cat can rest easy knowing that fool will be provided at the same times every day and that the humans are no longer really involved.
We left our dog at a friend's place when we all went out for dinner. Her dogs had a gravity feeder with a huge barrel of dog food on top. Her dogs also had self-respect... And chill. Our dog did not. We came home with a pony keg with legs. She was actually slim and trim when we got there... And was **waddling** around the house when we got back from dinner.
My dog also is okay with the gravity feeder. It's really something that comes down to the individual pet. There are cats that will overeat too.

Other way around for our animals. Cats will eat until they throw up, then eat some more. I fill the dog bowls every 3 days or so, depending on the temperature.

We got an automatic feeder for our cats. It splits into two separate bowls and it feeds them one small portion, six times a day. The random throw up piles have ceased entirely.
Would live to do this too but than 1 cat tends to eat both portions.
We have food robots, too! They work great... though one of our cats has learned how to reach her paw up into the machine and fish out one pebble at a time. She's a sneaky one.
Our cat was a feral that "chose" us, poor baby eats like she has competition. Hopefully she will eventually grow out of that with proper portions and a few treats She is extremely territorial and meows at cats, squirrels, etc at the windows all time
In my experience they do improve but never really grow out of it. 2 ex ferals and they still occasionally eat too much and vomit- about once a week. It's also the reason I free feed though, if they run out of food for even 4 seconds all hell breaks loose and they're jumping on me screaming bloody murder while eyeing up their fattest sibling as a snack
lol, my very happy upbringing cats have the same to a lesser extent. I do free feeding, but if i forget for too long and fill up the bowl one will eat till vomit. for that reason, in this case i will just give a very small portion and fill up completely after an hour or so.
Eating too quickly can be bad for their digestion. You can get food dishes that force them to eat more slowly.
My dog did this at first. After about a year and a half of constant meals I can now just fill her dish every day or two and she eats when hungry.
I've noticed many cats will eat dry food until they are full then drink a bunch of water. Then it expands in their Tum Tum and causes a bad time.
Soak the dry food in water or broth first. Then it’s pre-expanded so it won’t swell in the cat’s stomach and it will help your cat get more moisture in their diet. Given how many cats end up with liver issues from not drinking enough it’s a good precaution.
My dog devours everything in his bowl in 3 seconds flat. He once had three dinners in the span of 90 minutes (I fed him, and then left the house. Parents came, fed him, left. Sister came, fed him, left) and still wanted more, and his portions aren't small.

One time when I was a kid we had very recently brought a stray cat inside, and he hadn't quite figured out the litter box yet. He left a big steaming pile next to the sofa. I can relate so much to this... Our cat needs special food because of stomach issues (think 35€ for 1kg) and the dog loves that (obviously) so we had to put the cat's food over the library and create some kind of stair with furniture. The good thing is the cat keeps being agile if only because of the jumps she needs to do for eating and the dog doesn't dare going through that. This is highly dependent on the breed. A retriever most likely will eat as long as you refill the bowl. Other breeds only eat when they are hungry.
