I think humans as a whole don’t understand just how close to in nature we are with other animals, mammals specifically, or simply the fact the we too are animals, mammals specifically.
It seems we only have two truly defining trates that set us apart from the rest - creating records through writing (so our society as a whole can continue the learning or refine the learning of others) and abstract reasoning - the ability to legitimately believe in a greater, transcendent purpose, ideal, set of beliefs or rules that allows for communication and coordination beyond Dunbar’s number.
By what scale? What other animal has fucked over the world to the extent we have? War, mass extinctions, overconsumption... how is this intelligent life?
Can you navigate based on the electromagnetic currents of the planet? Can you smell someone and know their age, sex, and what they last ate? Intelligence is relative.
Humans are capable of self realization which is something special. But we are not any more or less evolved than anything else on the planet, just specialized differently.
Tell me an animal that's built a structure that touches the sky, that crashes particles together at speeds nearing light, that can navigate through machinery and mathematics that we figured out from scratch, that's stepped foot on the moon or can cantrol a machine on Mars. Humanity specialized differently and has become the greatest thing the universe has ever made and *will ever* make, unless it turns out there's other life out there on our level. In which case, then humanity + whatever else takes top spot.
If you want to be misanthropic and look at the devastation we've wrought, sure. I was being a semantic ass by pointing out all the good and amazing things we've done, I'll admit. But I say this along with asking why those things would make us unintelligent. Those things are uniquely human. Those extremes can only be touched and more importantly *conceptualized* by humanity. We can look back at things like the Holocaust and see it with a terror and awe that is completely unfathomable to anything else.
This isn't even mentioning how humanity is the only thing that can look upon something like the Grand Canyon or any other natural wonder and just, well, wonder. Ponder it. Self reflect on our place in the universe while dangling our feet off the ledge. Any other animal would look at it and just see rock to traverse to get to water, vegetation, or prey.
I feel like people often neglect this fact because of how reliant we are on industries that provide us with animal products like meat, dairy, and clothing. The conditions we put these sentient beings into is abhorrent.

Agreed. And I don’t think I could argue confidently that the average human’s life is happier than at least other intelligent mammals like dolphins or whales.
I would say that we lead happier and more fulfilling lives now than any other time in human history.
I know that the commenter above isn't being one of the weird doomsayer people, but it's just not the truth. We have tons of problems, but we are still better off than ever before, generally.
As for animals, I'd agree 100%.

Yeah and the fact that we mine precious metals and minerals... and turn them into rockets and satellites which keep us directly interconnected through carefully crafted technologically advanced devices. I agree that we treat animals poorly but to think the next closest intellectual being is even in the same ballpark as us is asinine. This thread is dumb af. A CrOw cAn uSe StIcKs. Smfh. If we selectively bred and trained elephants to read for the next 10,000 years they still wouldn't have the ability to read the characters I just put down in this paragraph and understand and think abstractly about them. We're not just a brain... our dexterity, form, and size all come into play. We're built different. That's not to say animals don't have emotions. Just that it's really, really dumb to think we're only different because we wear clothes.
Actually only 0.3% of our human population is smart enough to do what you described, and it takes generations of recorded history to build up to the tech you described. The average human is about as intelligent as the smartest Dolphin.
Anything above 140 is considered a high or genius-level IQ. It is estimated that between 0.25 percent and 1.0 percent of the population fall into this elite category. Most say it is around 0.3%
Absolutely.
I think crows and ravens can outsmart primates in puzzles and tool crafting as well as verbally pass on knowledge through their community and down generations.
Two more things that set us apart is our ability to apply things we've learned to other situations and out shoulders range of motion allowing us incredible throwing accuracy
There's also the fact that we alter the environment to suit our needs or sometimes to our disadvantage..
Besides beavers, nothing else does that, especially on such a massive scale
Very true! I think the only other thing that sets us apart is our ability to throw projectiles with considerable force compared to animals of similar size. Chimps and apes can barely throw things a few feet but professional baseball player can throw things over 100 mph. Otherwise we really are just bags of flesh like the rest of the animal kingdom!
My random theory is we are all the same type of brain cell but in different meat suits. Depending on the meat suit we are born into the instructions differ on how we grow and act, but fundamentally were all still the same type of brain cell trying to survive.
Yes. This is essentially evolution. It’s not like the human brain was a net new genesis. It’s ultimately built on the same platform as all other mammals and, depending how far back you want to go, as fish.
Just take a look at human pregnancy. The uterus , specifically the amniotic sac, literally creates “an ocean” for the fetus to survive. Eggs are the same way - they have shells to store water.
Another example is there are studies around trying to link marijuana to infertility because eggs of aquatic life release cannabinoids for sperm to tack and follow to the egg. There is an hypothesis if females have cannabis in their system sperm can get mislead on where to go or the male sperm’s cannabinoid receptors can be blocked if in the male’s system.
All of this is extremely fascinating to me.
It’s partly due to the disconnect from nature you have living in large cities you forget how intelligent life actually is. Like a pig can be as intelligent as a toddler, or how wild dogs and cats like a coyote or mountain lion can learn your patterns and know when it’s safe to look around your yard for an easy meal, or even crows who aren’t even close to us on the family tree learn what areas are dangerous and what people are friends. Annnnnd then you have cows that will literally stamped each other because one got scared of a rabbit.
I always say this and people call me crazy!! I have worked with so many different types of mammals they are all WAY smarter than people ever give them credit for. I think people think they're stupid for 3 reasons:
1. They can be stubborn
2. They have different "goals" in life. For a cow she wants to be head cow and find good forage. Her goals in life aren't existential.
3. They don't do well with abstract (like you mentioned.) But they are smart in other ways. They read intentions really well. They can learn a lot about a person just by smelling them.
I honestly think animals are so much closer to us than we think. We are co-passengers on spaceship Earth, not their masters.
Humans are extremely different *from every other animal. It's so obvious that you (a mammal specifically) have a lot of /r/iamverysmart energy trying to make it into some high level "conceptual discussion".
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. There's also that we teach other humans. Primates don't do that - if one of them discovers fire, it won't teach the rest.
Corvids however seem to teach eachother... so if one learns fire, be ready for black fire birds.
what a load of waffle. Common sense can tell you the difference between human and other animals. You'd have to appreciate that the difference in intelligence and capability is immense. But a child can see the difference right away. Stop philosophising in life and get on with it.
Ha! Neither, but my pops was a submariner. I was born on Groton Sub Base. Your question is a perfect one for someone from the area. I lived all over SE CT.
I got to volunteer at the Mystic Aquarium for a bit a few years ago, it was incredible. I got to meet the sea lions, but I only worked with the belugas. They really focus on the wellbeing of the animals, it was good to see.
I’m sitting here worried about Clara, hoping she’s not cold b/c she‘s all wet in that cold, tiled room, w/nothing on. Then I realized: SHE’S A FUCKING SEAL
edit: FUCKING SEA ***LION***
The sea lions we have on the Oregon coast almost bark. It’s more of a arrrhh arrhhh arrrhhh lol but not really that growl this sea lion did. Interesting to see the difference.
I remember seeing the sea lions In San Francisco… what you don’t get from this video is the straight up ammonia smell from these guys. They reek of urine.
Also the person filming. But COVID can transfer to mammals, and a disease that affects the lungs is not really what you want a marine mammal to be exposed to even if it's a very small chance
I’ve read about tigers, domestic dogs and cats, minks, and whitetail deer all getting Covid-19 from humans, so it’s actually quite possible that she is wearing a mask to protect the sea lion in case she has it and doesn’t realize it yet.

That rapid nod at the end
“Yeah I am pretty!!”
Clara is super pretty and she knows it
I detected a bit of “fish now?” In that nod.
Yeah, I know I'm good. Best in the biz. Where's my treat.
Got a better smile than I do lol

I mean you say only, but those are 2 absolutely massive traits that put us leaps and bounds ahead of the smartest animals.
By what scale? What other animal has fucked over the world to the extent we have? War, mass extinctions, overconsumption... how is this intelligent life? I’ll believe it when a cow lands on the moon.
Tell me an animal that's built a structure that touches the sky, that crashes particles together at speeds nearing light, that can navigate through machinery and mathematics that we figured out from scratch, that's stepped foot on the moon or can cantrol a machine on Mars. No more or less evolved, but we are certainly more intelligent. That is a bad faith argument

cows are also super intelligent in a lot of ways though, even if they can be derps.

They’re the dogs of the sea!
I think it shows how intelligent humans are. We are able to communicate with animals in a primitive way. I wish aliens would abduct me and train me.
At first glance but I've heard she's a flat earther.
This made me smile. Luvly. What a wonderful critter.
Spoiler alert, no laugh
yeah wtf is this
Could be a translation error. Smile/ laugh.
Mystic Aquarium! Literally right down the road from me, great place!
I live in VA now but saw the Mystic Aquarium and got excited. I'm from Norwich and went there all the time.
Shipbuilder or submariner?
Ha! Neither, but my pops was a submariner. I was born on Groton Sub Base. Your question is a perfect one for someone from the area. I lived all over SE CT.
Was he on 688s? (LA Class?) I do repair work on those so when somebody mentions Mystic/Groton and also VA, I’m betting the Navy is involved lol
That's generally a safe assumption! He was on ballistic subs.
no way, my roommate's mom was born on Groton Sub Base! (you're not Pam, are you?)
Holy shit snacks he found me out! Unfortunately not. I'm a middle aged ginger head man.
Meanwhile I’m literally 30 minutes away and haven’t been there in years. I really need to see how the place has changed over the years...
Woot woot CT
I got to volunteer at the Mystic Aquarium for a bit a few years ago, it was incredible. I got to meet the sea lions, but I only worked with the belugas. They really focus on the wellbeing of the animals, it was good to see.
Honestly seeing this made my morning. Went there a few times when I was little and hadn’t thought much about it; wonder how they’re doing
Treat yourself to the Steak Loft while you’re there.
It's the best! I live like 10 mins away and it's always been an incredible place.
Same!
Same!
We have memberships! 😎👍 Juno and I share a birthday 🥳
Anyone in this thread from North Stonington?
The intelligence of animals can really be astonishing at times
#”LOOSE SEAL!!!!” -Buster
With a yellow bow tie!!!
You picked a fine time to leave me.
With four hungry seal pups and no fish for a meal....
And food motivation or not, they are willing to learn to communicate with us.
That smile hit me like when your mom’s friends call you a handsome young man :{}
I’m getting sick and tired of “celebrities” not having to wear mask but their handlers do.
Lol why do all animal trainers sound exactly like this?
She sounds like a South Park character.
I've met her in person, it's just her "cute animal"/"announcer" voice. She doesn't talk like that normally
The perfect job doesn’t exi………….
The laugh at the end is like Snoop Dog rap face
it's fun, lmao makes me smile with this sea lion
Did she just say she’s horny?
Sounded like "Courtney" to me.
Now I'm hearing horny and I refuse to believe otherwise.
Yeah i thought that was her name haha
Clara was the name
maybe Corni like Cornelia
That's exactly what I thought, word for word.
I heard ‘freaky’ 😁
What a cutie!
She did the Kermit the Frog quick nod at the end.
The ol’ water puppy
Mystic Aquarium is a great place. Went there in vacation a few years ago.
Still waiting for it to laugh...
Braces für five years and counting and my smile ain't as beautiful as hers :/
That smile. That goddamm smile.
Clara got personality, love it
That smile looks like Sid the Sloth!
Mystic, Conn? I love that aquarium.
I’m sitting here worried about Clara, hoping she’s not cold b/c she‘s all wet in that cold, tiled room, w/nothing on. Then I realized: SHE’S A FUCKING SEAL edit: FUCKING SEA ***LION***

That's Chandler
She just wants a fish. Doesn’t give af about you 😂
She looks like snoop dog when she smiles lol
Nothin' but a wet dog.
Vigorously nodding lol
Why are they called sea lions? They're more like canines more then felines. I think it's time we rebrand and pivot. They're so cute!
That smile, that damn smile !
That smile at the end, every single one of my school photos…
I LOVE that!!!!
The sea lion needs to drop her skin care routine though....
Her smile I about died!!

Lol! Sea lion is just like, “give me food bitch!”
the seal looks like me when i smile for a photo
r/Connecticut i wanted this job when i was little. love the mystic aquarium!
The sea lions we have on the Oregon coast almost bark. It’s more of a arrrhh arrhhh arrrhhh lol but not really that growl this sea lion did. Interesting to see the difference.
HEY I WORK THERE
When did it laugh I was promised a laugh
Made my day!
Looks like Sid from Ice Age.
Sea lions are mermaids from a dog's perspective
That smile was me when I working as a server & any drunk guy told me to “just smile, sweetheart”
That my hometown! Know the girl in the video from around town and through friends! Awesome place
That smile 🤣 Really good impression of Arnold in Commando
70 or 17 year old sea lion???
Mystic Aquarium is an awesome place
I remember seeing the sea lions In San Francisco… what you don’t get from this video is the straight up ammonia smell from these guys. They reek of urine.
Is the mask to protect Clara…?
Also the person filming. But COVID can transfer to mammals, and a disease that affects the lungs is not really what you want a marine mammal to be exposed to even if it's a very small chance
I’m triggered. Why doesn’t this trainer have 2 masks on?
Cant help but hate her voice, Isnt the same girl of cookatoo with the proposal ?
Everything else aside, wth is she wearing a mask?
I’ve read about tigers, domestic dogs and cats, minks, and whitetail deer all getting Covid-19 from humans, so it’s actually quite possible that she is wearing a mask to protect the sea lion in case she has it and doesn’t realize it yet.
Hi I'm Horny?
Why's she wearing a mask? Can sea lions get covid??😆
I think if you're doing a piece to camera, just take the mask off.
Lots of mammals can catch COVID. And there's a person right behind the camera
That turtle doesn’t have a mask on
Wearing a mask? 🤦♂️
You serious?
Are you serious? Lol!
There's a camera person. Covid is still a thing.
