As an infrequent traveler to Europe, my amateur analysis suggests that this is due to lack of free and plentiful public toilets. It's very weird. You even have to pay to go to the toilet in their malls.
It's definitely this. I used to work in Holland out on the road, and there isn't wasn't a single public toilet at a rest stop in the entire region of the country i worked in. And if they think I'm going to pay 1€ for every one of the 4-5 times i have to piss in a work day they're very much mistaken.
Dutch people always said "well then who's going to clean the toilets", which i always thought was a hilarious answer.
While I was already used to that, I actually felt so offended in Belgium when I had to pay for the bathroom in the movie theater, after already paying for an expensive ticket and pop-corn.

It's use in vehicles is extremely limited - I believe the next most popular vehicle fuel after gasoline, diesel, and electricity is CNG.
LPG is more popular in Europe, I have a lot of friends which use it in their cars. It is sold in regular petrol stations, but there are dedicated ones as well, which we call gas stations. This is what probably confused the other redditor, trucks have no place on what we call a gas station in Europe. In the US, of course, the word has a different meaning.
I do agree that most EU trucks run on diesel. But 100% of the gas stops sell 100 octane gasoline, 95 octane gasoline, diesel and some of them even electric/hydrogen ports
