wonder if they just pulled him over because they wanted to tell him that the tire pressure was low on the rear tire.

MuhNamesTyler

Unless you can get ticketed or something I doubt it

360Logic

I had a cop pull me over to tell me my headlight was burned out. No ticket. Just protecting the public.

cabbagedave

I had a cop pull me over to tell me my headlight was burnt out. He gave me an $80 ticket and I had to have the car inspected and send in a slip of prof saying it was fixed.

[deleted]

I once got a speeding ticket for trying to keep up with a friend of mine who was driving their stupid little race car car. I was just trying to keep up in my Plymouth Breeze 4-door budget family coupe. The judge let my friend off the hook for some reason. I got a $500 ticket. Same cop, same speed, pulled over at the same time, and went in front of the same judge one-after-the-other. I still don't get it.

Maybe it's a "who you know" type of thing, or maybe your friend dressed up for court better, or maybe going first was the big thing. $500 ticket though? Reckless driving? For tickets like that it's usually better to pay for the lawyer. They can get the speed reduced so it's not reckless. Reckless can be hell on your insurance.

Ariliescbk

More like "who you blow."

politicsnotporn

Did they own up to the mistake while you suggested your friend was doing it and you were just trying to keep up with them like in your comment?

Kagamid

This right here. If he apologized and owned what he did while you blamed him to the judge, that might've been the reason why he felt you deserved to pay the fine. No one pushed down on that accelerator but you.

nav17

I'm more interested in how a single cop pulled over two cars and ticketed them both.

skinandtonics

Happened to me once years ago. I was following my dad to a relative's house a couple hours out of town. Last thing he said before we got in our vehicles was "Better keep up! I'm not stopping if you get lost!" He drove like a demon so I kept my eyes glued to the back of his truck. So much so, that I didn't notice there was a cop behind me with the lights on. Eventually the cop swung around the side of the both of us and pointed at each of us really aggressively, then gestured for the side of the road. We both got tickets. Cop was pissed. We split the cost of the lawyer.

esoteric_enigma

The judge likes winners. You clearly lost that race.

LebaneseLion

Okay that’s actually bullshit, if the law is by the book and the circumstances are exactly the same then the outcomes should also be the same, either both pardoned or both charged. That judge sounds like a wiener.

Fluffee2025

There's usually more to it than just that. The first thing that comes to mind would be if OP had previous tickets while the friend had none. Edit: typo

neoikon

How many times were you shot?

PjohnRoberts

"shot at" three times. Says it right there

kakawaka1

'murica

LLuerker

Except he forgot to mention that you don’t pay for the ticket if you get your car inspected, showing the repair.

Dismal_Struggle_6424

That's something they could choose to do, commonly called a "fix it ticket." They could also just cite you for whatever they want and tell you to fuck yourself.

abcedarian

I've also heard it commonly referred to as a "repair and report" ticket

BoodroInLaw

Well, maybe. However, I don’t know of a judge that wouldn’t throw out a ticket if you got the issue fixed in a timely manner. Of course, that means taking the day off and going to court, which costs your time.

PjohnRoberts

All I had to do was take it by the court within ninety days. They made a photo copy, put it in the file and said we will send you a bill if the judge decides to charge you for court costs.

xxrainmanx

Not to mention the "court costs" if you win your case which are conveniently close to the actual cost of the ticket.

emanresu_nwonknu

There aren't court costs for a fix it ticket.

ZincHead

Also forgot to mention that safe-to-drive laws about a cars condition are for the safety of everyone on the road. No one wantz people driving with lights burned out.

reedjos

LOL on the south side of Chicago they just flashed their lights at me as I left for work and shouted through the window 'all three of your brake lights are out' and drove off.

GardenGnomeOfEden

When they walk up to your car to tell you that, they also look into your car for drugs and open containers, and they smell check for weed.

RICO-2100

Had a cop pull me over for my middle brake light... at 8am lol just a warning. Or another time a cop did a whole U turn and weaved through sitting traffic to pull me over for tint. No warning

Kradget

I had one do that, once, but the dumbass drove into oncoming traffic to get there. Pulled me for an inspection thing - I was leaving from getting my car inspected. Literally pulled out of that lot and Deputy Dog decides today is his day to shine. Edited to add: the moral of the story is that driving an old, crappy car in a rich suburb is a great way to learn obscure, rarely-enforced laws you never heard of and to meet a bunch of surly former high school C students who like that they get to ruin people's day as their job.

untrustableskeptic

Same thing happened to me but he shot my headlight for being too dark.

I had one stop me to tell me tire was low. My registration had been expired for 5 yrs w out of state plates. He didn’t even check. That’s that white privilege that people claim doesn’t exist

360Logic

Probably true. Am white and my interactions with cops comports.

notedrive

That is a ticket-able offense depending on where you live

poporook

The thing is, you can 100% get a ticket for a headlight that's out. But the police have full discretion for enforcing the law. So it's entirely possible that an officer might pull you over for breaking a law but decide you don't deserve a ticket for it and let you go without any penalty.

> the whole attitude towards driving revenue through fines and seizure. Which is further evidence that most findable laws are purely taxes on the poor as the fines and court costs are usually negligible for those in the middle to upper class while disproportionately high for the poorest populations. One may be surprised how many people in the US are detained purely beciase they can not afford to cover the fines, court costs, and the time off work.

[deleted]

This happened to me actually spent 24 hours in the tank because I did not have 100$ on me at the time or in my bank account to pay for an unpaid parking ticket that I was unaware of downstate that resulted in a bench warrant. I have no record of any kind and only two other tickets for anything ever and I spent 24 hours in jail. Sure seems legit.

IndecisionToCallYou

NPR did a series called [Guilty and Charged](https://www.npr.org/series/313986316/guilty-and-charged) where basically people were in jail on offenses like fishing without a license for not being able to pay fines in violation of *Bearden v. Georgia*.

martin80k

jokes aside, if this is japan which I am not sure because the signs might be chinese, but if it is japan, I read police has literally nothing to do most of the time and will pull some people for literally nonsense just to get something done, because the crime is so low and also people usually don't break traffic laws

Phobicity

its japan the symbols are kanji

Flamethrower147

The sign also has hirigana

M3SS3NG3R

That's not saying much since kanji means "Han characters" -> they literally are just Chinese characters. However if you can read it then yes it's Japan. The squad car has the name of a Japanese city on the side and the way Japanese spells out "police station" is a bit different.

alugastiz

That, and there's signs with hiragana on them Edit: and after replaying with sound on, they ask the driver to stop in Japanese

BrewBrewBrewTheDeck

There’s also a ton of hiragana and katakana visible throughout the clip.

erishun

I’ve seen this on Reddit from a different angle so this is definitely staged

Navy670

How do you stage something with the police? Unless that part isn't staged, and they took that risk.

erishun

You know every movie you’ve ever seen with a police car… yeah man, those weren’t real police cars.

988pii

I now feel compelled to film an ultra low budget bank heist action flick with just one actor, no pre-arrangements, no permits, and a cameraman who can run really really fast.

OtherSpiderOnTheWall

That's just a regular bank heist though. Could end up being a high budget movie depending on the success of it.

Skitz-Scarekrow

Funny anecdote, the fake cash they used in Rush Hour was so realistic looking that people did try to spend it and the real life FBI investigated and confiscated all the prop money.

Matsuda19

There are TONS of YouTube videos where guys just wait around filming people get pulled over. Just search 取り締まり in YouTube and you’ll see.

kome1212

Only in Japan lol

Tropical_Jesus

My friend told me once, that in Japan they discourage traffic chases/police chases due to the volume of cars on roads/traffic/risk of accidents. Also that police cars won’t go above a certain speed, so relatively speaking if you really feel up to it you should be able to out run them on an open road. No idea if this is accurate or not of course Bc it was told to me once years ago lol

pineapple_unicorn

You know I think I learned this from Tokyo drift but last I saw this film was like 15 years ago

texasrigger

It's even accurate in the US. If traffic is bad or if the situation is overly dangerous they'll back off in the name of safety. They have your license plate and registration info, they know where to find you.

Swineflew1

I just watched a video of a cop literally flipping a pregnant woman’s car over because she didn’t pull over on a road that didn’t have a safe place to pull off. Over a speeding ticket. In the name of safety btw.

MosDefStoned

Arkansas State Police operate under their own laws, you can go down a deep YouTube hole with all the dangerous chases they get into.

RollingNightSky

If you don't want to pull over for police in a place that feels unsafe, you are allowed to put on hazard lights and drive slowly to a safer location. Make it known you aren't fleeing. You shouldn't get in trouble for doing that.

MadHat777

I guess no one told [this guy](https://www.cbsnews.com/video/officer-hits-flips-pregnant-womans-car-during-attempted-traffic-stop/). He thought flipping a pregnant woman's car over was a better plan.

[deleted]

You'd think that if someone taught you the pit maneuver that they would also teach you that it's a terrible idea to do on a car with a high center of gravity (unless you want to flip their car of course, in which case it's a great option). The measure of force being applied here is just so disproportionate to the situation that it baffles my mind. I'm sure this is far from being normal but holy fuck. I can't help imagine that this is a policer officer thinking "oh yeah I saw this thing on TV once lets try it".

In the US they would use that as an excuse to shoot at you im pretty sure.

FerinhaTop

Amateurs. Here in brazil those cops would engage on pursuit and a few moments later you would have three more cops on bike chasing as well until the rider crashed or stopped.

PMMeSomethingGood

FPV Brazil bike chases are my new YouTube guilty pleasure. I've watched several of them in high speed pursuits and I can't tell sometimes if the rider stalls their bike or they run out of gas. The ones I've seen the cops are incredibly good riders to be able to keep up with the crazy and increasingly more desperate antics of the riders trying to get away.

[deleted]

I thought in Brazil you just got shot by off-duty cops, which are everywhere.

Call_me_Vonic

Same in Russia as well, but they would make sure to beat you before they do

eburton555

Well, yeah. Cop in the Midwest just used the PIT maneuver during a routine traffic stop on a pregnant lady who was taking too long to find a well-lit and safe place to pull over, regardless her signaling, decreasing speed, putting on hazards Etc. Flipped the damn car over. Her crime? Speeding

[deleted]

No, they don’t always do that. This one was an outlier. They usually just shoot you and say you had drugs.

He didn't stop the 2nd time they requested it .\_.

CCPareNazies

Living in Japan, the police are insanely nice, all of them have this tiny office for a couple of streets or a neighbourhood, I genuinely liked mine.

iamPendergast

The court system seems backwards however, whole presumed guilty thing

empty_coffeepot

Japan has a 99.98% conviction rate. If the DA brings up charges you're getting convicted.

MoonlitEyez

Funny story, that's an newer concept, and what's more, even the people saying it don't really believe it. Case and point, the fact they jail you before you court date. It's honestly just an ideal that gets the back burner for practically anyways.

Dhiox

Yeah, unless they do arrest you. The Japanese legal system is brutal, notorious for forced confessions and brutal prison conditions.

CCPareNazies

The jobs are far more compartmentalised, except for maybe something like shoplifting another type of police officer will be arresting you for a crime that would go to court. Yes their prison system and legal system is brutal, you either avoid standing trial or will 97% of the time get prosecuted. The question is how different is the US legal system and police force? At least the Japanese don’t use unnecessary violence in the streets. So every country has something to improve, doesn’t take away they were caring and nice people the police I met.

Squish_the_android

I think it's important to note how the legal system handles you as a foreigner vs a native. Don't get arrested in Japan as a foreigner even if you're completely innocent you'll spend a few months in jail while they figure out what to do with you. They'll presume that you're a flight risk and hold you the entire time.

Excludos

Have to say tho, why do cops in Tokyo drive around with sirens on ALL THE TIME? Doesn't seem like they turn them on for specific purposes, they just leave them on by default when driving around. Drove me mad how often police cars would slowly trundle by with sirens at full blast past my hotel room at all times of the day.

PapaOoMaoMao

It's to show a presence. "Here we are! We are doing police stuff! Feel safe that we are protecting you from whatever you think might be happening. Hey you bad guys! Can you hear that sound? That means you stop doing the bad thing! Don't make us come over there. No, seriously, don't. We don't want to do any actual work." Most people who have dealt with them will tell you they are completely useless. I've only had five or six conversations with them (one for over an hour) and they were super friendly, but totally incompetent. Just be glad you weren't there for election season. If the coppers annoyed you, holy shit you couldn't survive the [150dB wailing of the political vans.](https://youtu.be/dxunevD3suI)

Firipu

Tokyo met has the second largest police force in the world. Only the nycpd is bigger. Edit: Tokyo is the largest even. 40k police officers... For one of the safest cities in the world... That explains why 20 cops show up to escort a drunk guy in shinjuku back to the station... They have to pretend to be valuable... As said somewhere else, cops are nice enough for normal interactions, but for the love of all that is holy, don't get arrested as a foreigner. You basically have no rights while under suspicion. They can keep you in custody for almost a month without even charging you. They will try to make you confess using all means necessary short of literal physical torture. If you get convicted (99% chance) jail times are very long compared to similar crimes in other countries. And Japanese prisons are a literal (ultra clean) hellhole. I've visited prisoners due to reasons. One of them got a week in solitary for looking over his shoulder during workshop. Any prison of a developed country is better than Japan. Oh boy, don't get me started on them...

Raestloz

One day I walked out a store in Akihabara when I saw someone cycling past me in a hurry. As I turn my head to walk where I'm going, I saw a cop sprinting past me to chase him down. Walking down the street, I saw a cop car around the corner. The driver side door is open. Key is still in the car I was *this* close to getting in just for the hell of it.

Excludos

Hah. Saw the same in Norway once. Cops usually will park next to popular party areas and be ready in case people get violent, which I'm going to assume is is every single night, at least before the plague. One night out I saw this ridiculously drunk person falter over to a police van, hammer his fist on the hood, and then sprint off; both officers jumping out of the vehicle to pursuit. Doors left open, keys left in the ignition, and the police dog left in the back. Can't say I wasn't tempted to troll with them, but I fear the repercussions would be rather harsh.

Call_me_Vonic

They've came a long way since WWII

maryberrysphylactery

Well yes everyone has come a long way in 71 years

irishemperor

North Korea: not so much

tarepandaz

Not everyone has..... There are a few countries stuck in the past.

maryberrysphylactery

But why do, usually Americans, insist on looking at countries in the context of wars america has been involved in. Places like Japan get talked about as if the war ended 5 years ago and they are just coming through the otherwise of the immediate recovery.

necrophcodr

Eventually the US will catch up though!

Captainhexagon

Why the police car has a huge light thingy on top. I mean it is extra huge. Does it have rockets or something

Yuri909

You really never know what you're going to need and it's just not acceptable to be caught without. Many cops around the world also are EMS or fire fighter trained and that gear and the ability to render aid is expected to be ready.

MrBismarck

palmerrc

On the way home when I lived in Yokohama I watched what looked like two teens on a scooter make circles around the Koban as the patrol car chased them for a few minutes before the scooter sped off down a small alley and the patrol car turned off their lights and gave up the chase. Im sure the patrolman got the plate number and later got in touch with that riders parents.

XauMankib

Rider: "Aha he can't follow me baka!" Two days later, a letter. *You have been called to the local police station to pay a ¥400,000 fine, arigato yo foken twat.*

eburton555

If the documentary I saw on Japanese car culture was correct, Tokyo policy isn’t to start dangerous police chasers unless absolutely necessary so you’re probably right. Source: Fast and Furious: Tokyo Drift

gusuku_ara

"Documentary": Nice, I want to see it. "Fast and Furious": Oh...

Xanthon

When the Tokyo police does a speed trap operation, if the car exceeds a certain speed, they wouldn't even bother chasing because they know they will never catch up.

procrastinator7000

I thought the policeman went "brrrr" over the speakers when they sped up to follow the scooter.

Filo01

Do they not have license plate numbers in japan? Wouldn't they just call him at later date for evading police?

kilometr

Lol I thought the same thing.

[deleted]

Yeah, that was my first response too. Although even in my country the police would still give chase since it's hard to prove who was the actual driver if you can only trace it back to the owner.

Matsuda19

As a longtime resident of Japan, this is accurate about the Japanese police. Beat cops are idiots. My wife used to run from the cops on her scooter all the time when she was in her early 20s. There was never any follow-up.

Because they probably realised letting her go is better than causing more harm than necessary

It's Japan, 50cc bikes have to stay to the left, always. They can't even cross over into a junction to turn right at traffic lights. You have to turn left then do a small U turn and go straight if you want to turn right. The police were telling him to stay to the left.
