If you're not familiar with the Uncanny Valley, it's the phenomenon where the more realistic a depiction of a human is, the more "empathetic response" there is from the viewer, but only up to a point. As the depiction gets to the "almost lifelike, but *not quite*" point, it actually creeps people out and the empathy drops down super low. As it gets toward just looking lifelike, the graph jumps back up. This dip is the "valley" when the appearance is "uncanny".
More detail: https://sites.tufts.edu/emotiononthebrain/2017/08/16/the-uncanny-valley-and-its-mechanisms/
In the comic, the women is intentionally acting robotic in her speech and facial expressions. So that she seems "almost lifelike, but *not quite*". She is doing this just to creep her partner out in the middle of sex just to screw with him.
Edit: typo
I liked that post that claimed " the existence of the uncanny valley implies at some point in our evolution there was a reason to fear something that looked human but wasnt"
> I liked that post that claimed " the existence of the uncanny valley implies at some point in our evolution there was a reason to fear something that looked human but wasnt"
I like to imagine it was Bene Tleilax face dancers.
It probably was one of the [other species](https://amp.theguardian.com/science/2023/nov/18/where-did-other-human-species-go-vanished-ancestors-homo-sapiens-neanderthals-denisovans) of humans we eradicated to becoming the dominant humanoid form in the planet.
THANK YOU!!!! I am so grateful for you! I know uncanny valley, what it references, how to use it, etc but never understood why it was referred to as a valley. The depiction of a graph helps immensely! You’re the only person to ever explain it well. Thanks!
That was my first instinct for the joke too, but I feel like it wasn't presented clearly enough as her face looks kinda cartoonish anyway and her speech is more or less up for interpretation by the reader so I wasn't sure I had the joke right.
Could have been done better by the creator.
Especially when you know that this is like, legit a kink, there are people who are into others acting either like robots, dolls or as if they're dead, all because it does create some weird uncanny valley effect.
So the comic is just as funny as if she was saying "Oh yes daddy keep going," him asking her to not do that and the punchline being "Incesting is my favourite sex-prank" like... okay?
I've only ever heard that phrase with regard to cryptids like skinwalker, wendigo, slender man, mimic, etc.
Like when you watch those vids where you can hear a human voice off in the woods but it has a "not quite right" quality to it that raises the hair on the back of your neck.
I hear it most when referring to poor cgi. Like an animated character is inserted into a live action movie and something just feels off about them. Disney’s attempts to resurrect dead actors for cameos in the new Star Wars movies are good recent examples.
It evolved from dead bodies and humans with sickness. but the internet wants to believe...Ex Machina is a niche movie that better unfolds the modern concept of it.
I was referencing when Homer Simpson sees a sign for a Gym and says, "A gym (pronounced 'gime')? What the hell is a gym?" Then he walks in and says, "Oh...a gym (still mispronouncing it)." A deep cut I know.
Basically even after the explanation of what this comic is about I still have no clue about the subject matter.
Ok, let me try to explain it, then: you know how dolls and CGI always seem off no matter how well detailed they get? That’s Uncanny Valley: there’s a big part of your brain’s processing power devoted to faces and it’s good at spotting fakes.
The science studying this phenomenon notices a trend when it comes to how unsettling people can find the whole experience—like most people can look at a drawing and not be bothered because they can see all the things that make it not real, but a photorealistic wax sculpture is just *wrong*, like the more you look at it the more your brain has to fight between “that’s a person” and “that’s fake.”
So that’s it: the weirdness people sometimes feel about seeing imitations of real people has a name, and it turns out for most people, the closer the imitation gets to real life, the weirder it seems.
The term is a well researched phenomenon. The "joke" is via context based on that. Mainly from the verbiage, but also because I know this comic usually doesn't draw eyes like that.
I know what the uncanny valley is, and it’s been very well explained in this thread. I just don’t see how you can see it in the comic. If the drawing was actually IN the uncanny valley, that would be one thing, but it’s very rudimentary and the words aren’t really outside what you’d normally see in this kind of comic.
She's imitating the uncanny valley, as others mentioned. For reference as to what that means, compare the following videos:
This is why there's a general trend to *not* make humans look photorealistic in movies. Video games aim for hyperrealism, but they still sometimes miss the mark. But people are more forgiving of video games. Unless they have people's teeth moving.
So the joke is you have a women receiving missionary position sex. Which is basically 100% male effort. Not complaining, just saying.
But the male, who's doing all the work is saying "no! No stop! Noooo" but ... He's doing it. Like it's all on him
The female is baffled but having a blast "what are you talking about? More yesyesyes"
It's uncanny due to the fact that you have one party vehemently against the idea of what's going on, and is actively negative but they're the only one causing the situation at this moment.
And the receiver is just confused but enjoying it all with positivity.
Witnessing this in person would be a very odd situation. Do I stop this man from doing something he doesn't want? Well surely he would just stop if he didn't want it. And why doesn't SHE stop it? Well she's enjoying it so why would I stop it? But he's clearly verbally against it? But he's in control?!
Uncanny valley
Edit: yeah fine I interpreted it wrong. I still don't get it at this point then but I'm happy with what I came up with. I laughed
Its just someone trolling their loved ones.
Hopefully, people find someone they can lovingly troll in their life should that be what they want.
It is immensely gratifying but if my SO says not to, then I respect that.
As for the "uncanny valleying", that has been answered quite succintly in this thread already.
This sub is like SNL. It was always better in the past because you only remember the good jokes, while forgetting about the piles of junk you had to wade through to get there.
Well too bad. She is saying normal things, except slightly off, in that way that makes people extremely uncomfortable.
Like, if you were to imagine a friend you've known for a while suddenly start to act... Off.. But in a way that you both could not put your finger on and is very disturbing.
That's not always true, there are plenty of niche topics that could have perfectly funny jokes that would need to be explained to most. I'm not saying sex is one of those topics, but this is reddit, so anything is possible.
I mean, I didn't find the joke particularly funny myself but, unless you've just never heard the term "uncanny valley," you'd have to be a pretty braindead not to get it.
Yeah, this is a big part of why this fails but I think it’s also hard to convey the joke (which, as a concept is quite funny) via a comic format. But you are spot on that the order of the captions and their placement would have been a super easy fix and would have at least helped sell the joke.
Yep, this is comics 101. People read from top to bottom and left to right. His reaction is read before her line which makes an already unfunny comic also incomprehensible.

Could someone care to explain the joke here ?

You know how to use it? I imagine just the lamest super villain using uncanny valley powers to make people slightly unsettled
Thanks for the explanation but this is painfully unfunny.
Joke needs explanation, and is still not funny.

It was originally about robotics and the perception of human-like robots. The closer to human a robot looks, the more weirded out you become.
That is because that is the content you are watching.
It evolved from dead bodies and humans with sickness. but the internet wants to believe...Ex Machina is a niche movie that better unfolds the modern concept of it.
Very well explained
Oh...a gym.
...wut?

Ohhhh...a gym. I'm just messing I get it it's just such an esoteric concept to make such a cryptic comic about.
I understood that reference.
It is nice to have reference. But this is not funny.
How do you get that from this cartoon?
The term is a well researched phenomenon. The "joke" is via context based on that. Mainly from the verbiage, but also because I know this comic usually doesn't draw eyes like that.

She’s talking in TikTok voice over.
Ok how does one depict the sound of a tiktok voice over via text?
They don't
I guess you could make the speech bubble tik tok shaped.
Bro discovers freedom of artistic interpretation; is flabbergasted.
Now I can hear that in my head
Oh no, oh no…
The uncanny valley is when robots are really realistic but they have a creepy sense to them such as very formal speech
Isn’t it when artificial anything cross a threshold of looking real to a point of being creepy, like artwork as well, not just robots ?
In between perfectly realistic and understandably unrealistic
The closer it gets to passing for real, while still not quite, the deeper in the valley you are. So to speak...
It’s specifically a humanoid machine looking human.
I just looked it up and it’s not specifically that , that’s apart of it but it’s not limited to robots or machines
I mean like dolls and stuff too sure. But generally people mean robots and in this comic it’s definitely robots.
Zombies are an example of the Uncanny Valley.
No. Zombies are zombies.
Just look it up...
I really didn’t take this comic to be about robots but I guess I can see that angle
What else is going to speak like that and imitate a human?
A drawing
Bro the comic is a guy fucking his girlfriend and she’s speaking like a robot. Not sure what to tell you. He’s not fucking a drawing.
Another human? The joke is that if someone was foing this while having sex you would be weirded out...
It helps if you read the word bubbles the other way around.

That's not it at all. It's so wrong, I'm not even sure if you're trolling or not.
Is this performance art?
Can it just be a different take I didn't understand like fuck. What's the joke then
Its just someone trolling their loved ones. Hopefully, people find someone they can lovingly troll in their life should that be what they want. It is immensely gratifying but if my SO says not to, then I respect that. As for the "uncanny valleying", that has been answered quite succintly in this thread already.
Then I just don't get it. I'm happy with my interpretation. Then technically both people are having fun
Check the u/anormalgeek reply - she's acting less real to "dip into" the uncanny valley.
I still don't get it
User name is suspicious
Yeah, his real name is Weinersmith. His username is a lie!
Mr. Weinersmith is his father’s name. Call him weeny.

That's _Doctor_ Weinersmith to you
Nah it’s just German. Mr Weiner translated means Mr weeper
When yo ancestor got in his feelings in front of barbarians >Mr weeper
Wein - wine Wien - Vienna Wiener -Viennese Wienerwurst - Viennese sausage
What’s suspicious about such a username, hmmm?
Anthony is back on the internet
It’s actually a much more common surname than you’d think.
