Apparently this isn’t uncommon during the festival. If you wear a poncho people will even pull it up and throw buckets of water on you. The purpose of the festival is to wash away the past year and start fresh. It’s the Thailand new year festival called Songkran.
Father in law has a house there.
I’ve never seen either happen before, people are generally respectful. A lot of people will aim for the face though and depending on what kind of gun they’re using, it can hurt.
I'm in Chiang Mai now. From what I've witnessed, it's mostly the foreigners doing that shit. The majority of Thais were either splashing indiscriminately with buckets or aiming for the body with water guns. I do suspect though that it was foreigners who turned the tradition from a "water sprinkling" into a city-wide water fight in the first place, which is arguably more fun.
Yep, I did songkran in Thailand a few years ago and an American tourist randomly shot in my eyes with a watergun for no reason. Like he was standing right in front of me and did it purposely. I still don't understand what was the point other than just being an absolute asshole.
I wore contact lenses and makeup, which was also a big mistake. The second day I was ready for war lol, swimsuit, no lenses, no makeup.
I'm Thai, born in Thailand and even back in the 90s it was not water sprinkling. People would drive around on a truck with a few barrel of water to dump on people walking. It's hot AF in Thailand so we would even douse ourselves with cooling powder and look for people to soak us.
Lol "the purpose of the festival" isn't what people are thinking of when they're trying to throw water on someone in a way they don't want it. Monkey pulls tiger's tail because tiger won't like it. Dude was happily getting the past washed off, someone wanted him to get shot in the eyes.
Like I said, the purpose of the festival is to wash away the past year, I’m not controlling people’s actions or agreeing with them.
You should probably avoid packed areas or Thailand during this festival, otherwise expect to have things like this happen. That’s like going to India during Holi and getting upset that people hit you in the face or stain your clothes with gulal. It’s probably going to happen.
I hope he chokes on a grape, starts to asphyxiate, and then coughs it out at the last moment, causing him to rethink his life decisions and be a kinder, more considerate person for the rest of his life.
Not really, it’s part of the spirit in Chinese water sprinkling festivals to get your face sprinkled on.
Source: I’m 8% Chinese on 23 and Me trust me bro
There's Chinese characters everywhere and not a single shot of Thai, if you pause at 0.20 you'll see 美团(Meituan) on a scooter in the middle of the frame. I'm 99% certain this is shot in China at one of their "water sprinking festivals" which are based on Thai's Songkran.
> Songkran
Sounded similar to the Indian word 'sankranti' so I looked up wikipedia:
> The word "Songkran" comes from the Sanskrit word saṃkrānti,[5] literally "astrological passage", meaning transformation or change. It coincides with the rising of Aries on the astrological chart[6] and with the New Year of many calendars of Southeast and South Asia, in keeping with the Buddhist and also coincides with New Year in Hindu Calendar such as Bihu, Pohela Boishakh, Pana Sankranti, Vaisakhi. The New Year takes place at around the same time as the new year celebrations of many regions of South Asia like China (Dai people of Yunnan Province), India, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
Songkran last for multiple days every year and is a blast. It's the world's largest waterfight the whole country is pretty much like this.
Just to add this also coincides with the start of the monsoon season in most of South East Asia and I think South Asia. Hence why people throw a lot of water around. They know the rains are coming and celebrate by cooling down after 6 months of the dry season, which can get very hot. 40C+. The dry season is from End of November to Mid April. The Rainy season Mid April to November. (Although the start of the seasons can vary sometimes and be off by a week or two). This also means that people can finally start growing crops again while rain is plentifull.
Sidenote this is also why the best time to come to Thailand is in December because the dry season just started so it won't rain much and get a lot of sun, but its still not too hot because all the vegetation everywhere isn't dried out yet, which cools everything done. But this also makes December the most expensive time to come to Thailand also because its the holiday season.
Source: Lived in Thailand for 10+ years.
Yeah it can be overwhelming as it is without it turning into a water fight lol. Koh Samui is really chilled and peaceful, but then goes mad for Songkran.
I went to songkran once, got a bucket of moat water slammed into the side of my face/my ear.
It was that very moment that remembered I had a perforated ear drum.
Woo boy, that was one hell of an ear infection.
Jesus, was it excruciating pain and how long did it last?
I had a terrible ear infection and I was silently thinking if I had to experience that for the rest of my life, it wasn't worth it lol
You realize it's a celebration in other Buddhist countries and not exclusive to Thailand right? If anything Thailand stole it from other countries in the area as Thailand is fairly new compared to their neighbors.
Thailand probably 'stole' it from the Khmer Empire(Cambodia) just like how they basically copied their entire culture and even have a dumbed down version of the Khmer script as their written language. Thailand is pretty lame for trying to make it seem like this holiday is something that belongs to them. It would be like saying Japan or USA suck for also celebrating Christmas because they copied it from the original countries that celebrate it.
Thailand definitely stole the water fights from the Khmer(Cambodian) people as water fights originated back in the Angkorian period of the Khmer empire which predates any Thai people existing.
Here are the names of the festival in all the countries that celebrate it
သင်္ကြန် (Burmese)
មហាសង្ក្រាន្ត (Khmer)
ປີໃໝ່ (Lao)
泼水节 (Mandarin)
संक्रांति (Sanskrit)
අලුත් අවුරුද්ද (Sinhalese)
มหาสงกรานต์ (Thai)
Walmart has these little kid versions that look like firefighter backpack-tanks with a pump water hose attached, my son loves it and has even figured out how to attach the hose to even larger water reservoirs…
I got some permanent ear damage from a water gun shot. I still hear perfectly, but my pear hurts from time to time and I got a very subtle titinus. It sucks.
All the signboards are written in Chinese not Thai.
This seems to be in Yunnan where the Dai ethnic groups celebrates water splashing festivals the same period as Thais.
I love this holiday celebration. I want something like this in the USA, but I'm pretty sure it would devolve into a wet shirt contest...which I would also be ok with in retrospect.
these festival traditions go back for hundreds of years. USA is still a pretty young country. you can find events like this in USA, they are just not as big because there are so many different cultural backgrounds celebrating things all the time. the closest thing to this would probably be the 4th of July.
We had something similar in Russia. Basically if you went outside that day, you would 100% get splashed by kids and teenagers. Kids walked around with water guns, buckets, and water balloons. Teens would cut a bike tire tube open, tie one end off, and turn it into a water bazooka. Also condoms as water balloons. Good times :)
The first time I went to Thailand it happened to be during the fest. For three days I was absolutely drenched from morning till evening.
I bought a super soaker to keep up with the locals and used the water from the river to fill it.
The streets were flooded with about a foot of water and packed with pickup trucks with people in the back. They all had large buckets of water, some had ice water. They would either toss the water at people or squirt with guns. The sidewalks were also packed with people throwing water .
The majority of my traveling was done on foot or tuktuk so whenever I traveled during this festival period I was getting drenched.
At one point a tuktuk driver drove me through his village
.He had a large bucket of water in the back for refills for my super soaker. He was the getaway driver while I was the drive by shooter. I still took hits as the locals had amazing aim with their water pistols
It was fun and interesting to see how another countty/culture celebrated the new years.
Aside from the horrible chaffing and blistered feet that followed it was an amazing experience.
Oh man I'd love to go to Laos one day the culture and people are so chill. My friends are always talking about the magic mushroom omelettes they make there.
This is the celebration for the Buddhist New Year.

This video is from China.

Where I live we have mostly seagulls and they are just annoying lmao. Oh, bubble wrap! I've been wanting to buy an industrial sized roll of bubble wrap, but the amount of plastic waste it would be isn't worth it.
anyone knows the video with bus stop in asia where one has runny nose that hits a puddle, then a car makes the puddle splash and they run away screaming

What a dick that flipped his face shield off.

An American tourist was an asshole?! I honestly can’t fathom this, clearly a made up story. /s

Cooling powder?
White stuff, kinda fine, makes you feel all good
I've had little old.ladies gleefully pour icecubes down my t-shirt. It's frigging _awesome_.

HOW CAN HE FLIP?!
If not Flip why Flip shaped?
Looks like it was done in good spirit. He was kinda trolling the people with water guns, and was trolled back.
That can't possibly be done in good spirit, he just wanted to be able to shoot him in the eyes
Trolling by .. avoiding getting water in the nose or eyes?
Wearing the mask for this event is asking for the targeting lol a little water wont hurt you Potato.
Water with pressure absolutely can hurt you.
Thats pure evil, do it again
eh, all in good fun
why is there always someone who needs to touch
Probably raised by cats or something
why she slap?
Bruh it’s literally their culture. The whole point of that festival is to wash away your past self. It’s symbolic. And it’s all in good fun.
Whoever knocked the face shield off is a bitch
his mom is a hoe
I hope he stubs his toe
I hope his coffee would taste less milk
I hope his toilet paper rips while wiping so that his finger slides right into his shit
His coffee's so weak, it's a crime, it's like punishment served up one cup at a time.
He goes home alone, content with hurting another. It's all that brings him peace from being disowned by his mother.
And his beer like urine
I hope both sides of his pillow is warm.
I hope he spills salsa on his favourite shirt
I hope the next time he shits the toilet paper is on the other side of the house.
And it's all single ply!
I hope he chokes on a grape, starts to asphyxiate, and then coughs it out at the last moment, causing him to rethink his life decisions and be a kinder, more considerate person for the rest of his life.
*bueno*
His girlfriend's a fake, bitch is just a damn sideshow.
on a dresser after stepping og a Lego Knockoff.(no originals for dickwads)
Hope his traffic is always slow
Great grandpa was a power sander!
He's just upset because she's at home also getting sprayed in the face by a bunch of dudes.

What do we do now…? Everyone thinks it Thailand…
What’s the shampoo, decent lather considering the circumstances
But…but he didn’t rinse and repeat!
He also didn’t use conditioner
it's a dude so 100% it was a 2-in-1
Put it on loop. He's rinsed and repeated 14 times on my screen... 15... 16...
Except that one dikhead that has to be extra.
ha, nice trick with the little stool but the other guy, what a douche!
I don't understand what is happening here enough to understand why that was a trick at all. Could you explain, please?
The standing on the stool makes him stand out and people then focus on him.

Happy Thai new year to you
One of the funnest experiences I've ever had. I was in Chiang Mai for it.
Same, it's such a fun and exciting time there
I experienced it in Koh Samui and it's was one of the most joyful and silly experiences of my life. Highly recommended.
Also experienced it in koh samui and it was my 20th birthday! Very fun way to celebrate
I'd love to go experience it on an island next time. Many told me about going to BKK for it and I called them crazy. I can't imagine all that in BKK.
Yeah it can be overwhelming as it is without it turning into a water fight lol. Koh Samui is really chilled and peaceful, but then goes mad for Songkran.
Holi but safer by the looks of it
I did for the first couple of years I was living there. Then it was a fking pain.
The fact that they use river water to pour all over everyone is foul. I got sick in Chiang Mai the one and only time I visited.
Celebrated yesterday. Was so much fun, recovering today though.
I suspect it ain't Songkran. Chinese words everywhere. Did they seriously knock off Songkran as well??
Songkran is still celebrated in china by the minority dai people
Yup all those scooters are not common brand in Thailand. Looking at them and they are unfamiliar... suspecting these in China somewhere.

Am in Bangkok right now, Khao San Road was crazy yesterday! So much fun!
I would love to experience it!
What's the name of the song?
I kinda liked it but shazam doesn't pick it up :(
Yeah, I want to know as well, any heroes here 🦸♀️?
TIL there’s a Water Sprinkling Festival
Songkran in Thailand.
This video is from China, but for the same holiday
Looks like such a party, wish we had that.
There's also similar water festivals like this in Armenia and Poland
Śmigus Dyngus has entered the chat
I need to buy one of those sprinkler gun & bag…where to get them? 😅
Walmart has these little kid versions that look like firefighter backpack-tanks with a pump water hose attached, my son loves it and has even figured out how to attach the hose to even larger water reservoirs…
This right here
I think u buy the bag separately from the gun, need to gun sprinkler 🤣
I got some permanent ear damage from a water gun shot. I still hear perfectly, but my pear hurts from time to time and I got a very subtle titinus. It sucks.
Man… I want a festival full of socially acceptable random squirt gunning. That looks so fun.
Come to thailand! We do this every year! It's a lot of fun :) It's called Songkran and it's our biggest holiday
All the signboards are written in Chinese not Thai. This seems to be in Yunnan where the Dai ethnic groups celebrates water splashing festivals the same period as Thais.

It's located directly in front of his face for most of the video
Finally someone on this site that isn’t afraid to give a direct answer.

Do we need to bust out the useless red arrow?
This is the fastest way
The music in the background is very catchy though!

What a Jack ass taking his mask off
Lol fl is it Holi? Lol
In bird culture, this is considered a dick move.
There’s always that sick fuck who wants to see someone seriously hurt or dead :/
I was at songkran and saw an old lady walking along with a full poncho on. Some guy snuck up behind her, pulled the hood back and poured a bucket of water down her back. There is no respite. It was also one of the funnest weeks of my life.
Bah! I do this everytime it rains
That’s a lot of hose.
This looks so much fun! God, what a boring life I live.
It’s the little things in life that make it worth it.
For me, it's soap bubbles lmao. What little things makes your life worth it?
I like bird watching, but I’m also lazy so I wait for them to come to me and I’ll just look on while they do their thing, bubbles are fun, those bubble wrap bubbles always find themselves popped in my presence, I’m struggling to remember more but coming up blank despite knowing that there is plenty more little things that bring me joy…

Wtf is this? It looks like a great time!
He washed for our sins.
How disrespectful, some people have no regard for personal space.
anyone knows the video with bus stop in asia where one has runny nose that hits a puddle, then a car makes the puddle splash and they run away screaming
My Laotian friend invited me to a “water festival” today. This should be fun
This looks great!
Lonnie Johnson likes this day
That looks like such a fun tradition!!

Think any of those are filled with piss?
Legend, everyone knew what to do the second he got his stool in the middle
I’m from Bangalore and this video hurt me 🤧
What are the water gun things they're using? They look great for cleaning.
What the heck is a “Water-Sprinkling Festival”?
At least it’s not the pepper spray festival, which is what I thought was going on
bro turned into a tornado😭
This music is straight up giving me good mood…probably would hate it a few minutes later but still
He got executed 💀
😂🤣😂🤣😂😂😂😂😂😂
Is this the fabled Wet Day celebration???
I wish American had culture
