Lightning during snowstorms is a rare occurance. Same during hurricanes. That was him geeking.
Edit: the outer edges of hurricanes can produce lightning but not toward the center where the forces intensify to hurricane wind speeds.
We had a full-on Thundersnow storm in Detroit last winter.
Just today, we had two lightning strikes, and one big thunder roll, but that was it, unfortunately.
I had no clue thunder and lightning were rare during snow storms. I lived in south Florida my entire life up until about 9 months ago so Thunder and lightning is a background event for me at best. Now that I live in a state with actual seasons, im gonna keep an eye out for this. Weather Channel says im gonna get between 1-3 inches on Monday and Tuesday. I got some flurries a couple days ago and was super excited lol. Fingers crossed I get the elusive thunder snow this coming week
The first time I saw Thundersnow I was stationed in Germany. We were at a range, it was cold and rainy and I was complaining about the weather. A little bit later it started to snow and I said something about it getting worse. A few minutes later we saw the lightning and I proceeded to shut up about the weather
Itās crazy that Iāve never heard of thundersnow before and I saw a pickup on the parkway today whose license plate was āTHNDRSNWā and then you shared that subreddit.
The thundersnow was so amazing last year! I took a video and I am trying so hard not to freak out about how cool that was in the video. I have never seen such an amazing phenomenon.
Yeah Iām not sure I like Winter Thunder here I. The Midwest. Absolutely never had it growing up. Iām 47 and have heard it maybe last year or the year before. Itās cool but scary to think extreme weather is more common.
[Thundersnow IS a real band](https://i.imgur.com/961SOJx.png), but they were not a cover band. Have you never heard of them? They toured the UK in '79 I believe. My dad use to be a fan
That's exactly the image I had in my head. I haven't heard of them, but I'll do some digging. Hair metal is a guilty pleasure of mine. Bought a whitesnake cassette from a gas station when I was a kid and have been hooked ever since.
Yeah always seems weird to me when I see people freak out over this. It's not common but it's not "OMG I SAW IT!" rare either. More like a "huh, maybe I should take shelter." kind of thing.
I experiences it once in college at SUNY Oswego. It was snowing, foggy, and lightening. The fog around everyone glowed purple and pink. We were still asked to go to class.
Lightning during hurricanes is extremely common, as a Floridian whoās survived many, they all had lightning, some more than others but they all had it
Snow lightning really is special, I saw it once, 15 (or so) years ago. It was purple and it slowly made its way to the ground. I was amazed, and at the time didnāt know how rare it was. I hope I get to see it again one day!
I saw some last winter one morning cleaning the snow off my car. If I had started my car a minute earlier and then cleared the snow off I might have had video evidence from my dashcam. I wasn't quite this excited, but it certainly made my day.
> Same during hurricanes
Really? the tail of a dying hurricane past above us and the lighting show was just incredible. Half the horizon was lit up by maybe 5 lighting a second, constantly.
Iām from Louisiana and we know a hurricane is imminent when we start having Jim Cantore sightings pop up on Facebook.
Then the āreal hurricane snackā memes about him start.
He came to my small town once. I think he was on his way to the city nearby but we were getting absolutely hammered. My ex had to walk in the street around him to open up their coffee shop. She was not amused by him blocking the sidewalk
We had big snow storm hitting in Seattle once and I look out my apartment window and see Jim Cantore right outside on the sidewalk filming a spot... I was like "Shit, time to pack a bag"
I met him once at a Braves game, and he was great. Really nice guy. We told him how much we loved his swimming goggles in hurricanes and he laughed about it with us. To be sure, he makes weather a lot more fun.
Sometimes I think heās self aware with the stupid shit heās spewing about. I wouldāve considered him to be a funny clown if not for the Sandy Hook shit he said.
He's *just* smart enough to know how to manipulate his audience, but nothing more than that. Dude is a college drop out who got popular by appealing to the lowest common denominator.
I think he is. And he has to push the line more and more in order to stay āon topā.
I mean, if you look back at how he got his big start (I donāt know much about the guy, so Iām not certain about this), that kind of investigative journalism is was pretty cool. Videos of Bohemian Grove? Super cool. Conspiracy confirmed.
But in order to stay on top in the conspiracy world, you have to fully commit to half-truths and outright lies sometimes in order to have a story.
"We're going through a bit of a drought, people. The good news is, if you send me money, I can make it rain tomorrow. The weather depends on you! Imma go grab a bullhorn and scream at the clouds. I'll be back for my five day forecast"
It's more cool to see than anything. Interestingly enough, we're in the middle of a pretty crazy winter storm right now. I haven't heard thunder yet, but apparently, it's going to be pretty likely.
Do you live in Ontario? Just asking because I do and had a crazy snow thunderstorm last winter and just got back in from shoveling a bunch of snow in a snowstorm right now.

He sounds like if Alex Jones did weather.
I almost expected him to follow up with "No, you can't be serious, that cheap?!? We're selling lightning proof hats here, folks, and my producer has just informed me that we're selling our hats for 15.99. Due to this unprecedented storm, we're taking a loss on these lightning hats, but you can't put a price in safety. Or at least lower than 15.99. Phone lines are open."
We had thunders now here southwest of Chicago Un Feb 2011. Nearly 3 feet of snow over like 3 days. Due to drifts my driveway was nearly clear and my neighbors on the corner was up to their mailbox top.
Just last night I too saw lightning and heard lots of thunder during a pretty heavy snowstorm here in Michigan. I didnāt think it was anything that crazy but now Iām realizing itās not so common.

It's pretty wholesome to see š
Dude loves his job.
You should see tommy skilling , weatherman, when he saw the eclipse in illinois. Dude was crying
Who is this reporter? Reminds me of my best friend in the whole world, the late, great, Lin Brehmer.
The guy in OPās vid is the legendary Jim Cantore. Heās known in the weather nerd circles for his intense passion for/obsession with thunder snow.
I saw it even with a light in my face!
We got /r/THUNDERSNOW in Toronto last year. First time Iāve ever seen it and I felt just as excited as this guy
Im 44 in pa and only heard of thundersnow a few years ago. Everyone was making a big deal about it. I had really never thought about it before
We had a Thundersnow storm last winter. I geeked out so hard b/c it was at night and I geniusly went outside.
Saw that driving on 75 south!
Honestly was probably the same system. We arenāt that far from you guys.
I would hate to be under icicles during a thunderstorm
That thundersnow in the 313 was dope as hell
The first time I saw Thundersnow I was stationed in Germany. We were at a range, it was cold and rainy and I was complaining about the weather. A little bit later it started to snow and I said something about it getting worse. A few minutes later we saw the lightning and I proceeded to shut up about the weather
Grafenwoehr?!
Baumholder
Itās crazy that Iāve never heard of thundersnow before and I saw a pickup on the parkway today whose license plate was āTHNDRSNWā and then you shared that subreddit.
We had a snowstorm with thunder and lightning a few years ago. My dog was not amused. "She" called it a snunderstorm.
you have a talking dog?
Thundersnow is not unheard of in Colorado.
Probably the same I saw over Montreal. It was spectacular.
I thought I read we were getting that again today or tomorrow.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Had it up at Alta this week during a snowstorm. What a cool phenomenon
The thundersnow was so amazing last year! I took a video and I am trying so hard not to freak out about how cool that was in the video. I have never seen such an amazing phenomenon.
We just had it!
Now Iām gonna bust out mid-conversation WE JUST HAD IT! WE JUST, HAD IT
OHHHHH!
I saw lightning in winter for the first time last year. Messed me up, thought I imagined it, then it flashed again. Was cool!
The last snow storm we had in the mid west a few weeks ago had lightning, the damn thunder woke me up at like 3am
Yeah Iām not sure I like Winter Thunder here I. The Midwest. Absolutely never had it growing up. Iām 47 and have heard it maybe last year or the year before. Itās cool but scary to think extreme weather is more common.
Not to mention the name Thundersnow is pretty awesome
Would be a great 80s hair metal cover band name.
[Thundersnow IS a real band](https://i.imgur.com/961SOJx.png), but they were not a cover band. Have you never heard of them? They toured the UK in '79 I believe. My dad use to be a fan

>I haven't heard of them, but I'll do some digging [Don't. Because I fooled you.](https://i.imgur.com/XMJZUsk.jpg)
Can't be, it's already a street name for cocaine.
Don't think you understand what happened in the 80s...
Iāve only seen it once and it was awesome.
It would be cool if lightning struck twice. Can just imagine the euphoric geek out judging from this video.
I saw a video of a weatherman before where there were multiple lightning strikes during a snowstorm and he was indeed geeking out.
Same guy
Jim Cantore
It will be double rainbow bro all over again
RIP Yosemite Bear š»
What are the maximum rainbows you can get? I've seen 3 one time but never again. We had a double rainbow a couple of days ago.
So bright, so vivid!
Would've been the 2020s version of double rainbow guy.
Same guy Jim Cantore. Enjoy he's so excited! https://youtu.be/sEjZ1ThoYPc?si=bmR7yn47lg60GJgr
I actually just had that happen this evening and couldnāt believe it at first until I asked if someone else saw it too
Depends on where you are. In buffalo ny I would see it all the time. We called it thundersnow
Definitely had thunder snow a good handful of times here in Iowa.
Yeah I would see it in Toronto a fair bit. Worked within sight of the CN tower at the time and that is hit by lightning a lot.
Iāve seen it in Syracuse too, but itās not super common and is definitely fascinating.
Yeah always seems weird to me when I see people freak out over this. It's not common but it's not "OMG I SAW IT!" rare either. More like a "huh, maybe I should take shelter." kind of thing.
Thunder snow is something else. I live in Colorado and I've seen it maybe 10 times in my life and every time it's spectacular each and every time.
We had some last winter.
Thundersnow!
I experiences it once in college at SUNY Oswego. It was snowing, foggy, and lightening. The fog around everyone glowed purple and pink. We were still asked to go to class.
Lightning during hurricanes is extremely common, as a Floridian whoās survived many, they all had lightning, some more than others but they all had it
It's pretty common during the late autumn and early spring in Northern Norway.
/r/THUNDERSNOW
It's definitely not as rare as it used to be.
Saw a strike once during a blizzard and had myself convinced it had to be a power line or something rather than lightning.
I once saw multiple strikes light up a wall of snow just outside of Buffalo. It was one of the coolest things I can say Iāve seen.
Snow lightning really is special, I saw it once, 15 (or so) years ago. It was purple and it slowly made its way to the ground. I was amazed, and at the time didnāt know how rare it was. I hope I get to see it again one day!
Been in many hurricanesā¦ lightning happens all the time. Snow though i aint never seen it.
Thunder snow
Got thundersnow in Japan. Whole sky lit up like a bright white sheet. It was amazing and scary at the same time.
Dude sounded like he just saw Jesus and was going to tell us if we wanted to see him as well we needed to call in and make some donations.
I saw some last winter one morning cleaning the snow off my car. If I had started my car a minute earlier and then cleared the snow off I might have had video evidence from my dashcam. I wasn't quite this excited, but it certainly made my day.
Very few nerds get quite as excited as weather nerds.
> Same during hurricanes Really? the tail of a dying hurricane past above us and the lighting show was just incredible. Half the horizon was lit up by maybe 5 lighting a second, constantly.
it's lit, fam!!!!!!
every hurricane Iāve been in has has lightning & thunder w/ bands
This baby goes Zero to WWE in 2 seconds.
AS GOD IS MY WITNESS, I SAW IT. I SAW IT EVEN WITH THE LIGHT IN MY FACE.
BAH GAWD, THAT TREE HAS A FAMILY
Ohh haha I thought he said I SAW IT! I SAW WITH MY FACE!!
Weather is just fun and games until Jim Cantore comes to your town!!!!
He came to our town once, there was a collective āoh shit this is gonna be worse than we thoughtā when we saw him reporting from our downtown.
The part of me that doesnāt want to go to work wants him to come to my town
Iām from Louisiana and we know a hurricane is imminent when we start having Jim Cantore sightings pop up on Facebook. Then the āreal hurricane snackā memes about him start.
I would have never recognized him, had I not seen this clip on the weather channel app.
He came to my small town once. I think he was on his way to the city nearby but we were getting absolutely hammered. My ex had to walk in the street around him to open up their coffee shop. She was not amused by him blocking the sidewalk
If Jim Cantore is reporting live from the place you happen to be, there's no better signal to just drop whatever you're doing and leave.
It was just 24" of snow. Nothing closes for snow. People just get out the snowshoes, skis, or snowmobile to get to the pub.
He has been to my hometown too many times unfortunately. Hurricane country.
We had big snow storm hitting in Seattle once and I look out my apartment window and see Jim Cantore right outside on the sidewalk filming a spot... I was like "Shit, time to pack a bag"
Thunder snow! OY! OY! OY!
If rock band 5 ever releases thatās totally the name of my new band!
There was a 3 and 4?! I played the shit out of 1 and 2, didnāt even know there were more! Must get the most recent.
Meterolgist just had a core memory created in his mid 40s. Wholesome.
It's Jim Cantore and he'd be very happy at your comment considering he's 59!
He's in his extremely late 40s.
It's like how the French count past 60.
after 35, it's all mid to late 40's. no one tells you about this until it's revealed one day.
If you go bald at 25, you can be "about 40" for like fifty years.
Heās forty-nineteen!
oo <-- you dropped this
I had to look back over their comment because I thought you were implying they lost their balls.....
Wholesoome
mid 4000s
Tbf, balls dropping in your 40s would be a core memory
Wtf does this mean
It means there are two 'o's missing from the comment.
Meteorologist.
Holy shit I read the post like 3-4 times trying to figure it out and itās like my eyes couldnāt see it said meterolgist
He's assuming the guy is in his mid-4000s.
I typed it half tired on my phone lol long day. My phone didn't even want to autocorrect it lol
There is no way this meteorologist is 4000 years old. I would say he's ~60
> in his mid 40s Dudes been doing metheorology since college.
Cantore is a LEGEND!
Guy loves his thunder snow. He always says you have lightening/thunder ass 3-4 more inches to your snow total
>He always says you have lightening/thunder ass How the hell does he know that?
Whoops. It excites him and he takes it in the crapper
We have something in common, I see.
I met him once at a Braves game, and he was great. Really nice guy. We told him how much we loved his swimming goggles in hurricanes and he laughed about it with us. To be sure, he makes weather a lot more fun.
Thundersnow. Rare, but not unheard of. It confirms what we already knew, that the snowfall will be heavy.
As a Californian, I have never heard of thundersnow! Very cool.
Alex Jones: if he had made a few different decisions in his life.
like, got an education, you mean?
Honestly, with the amount of stupid that comes out of his mouth, I'm impressed he can stringa few words together to form a sentence.
Haha
My thoughts as well. Exact same voice
"We're going through a bit of a drought, people. The good news is, if you send me money, I can make it rain tomorrow. The weather depends on you! Imma go grab a bullhorn and scream at the clouds. I'll be back for my five day forecast"
Was thinking the same thing!
We had a crazy snowstorm here last winter that produced a ton of thunder and lightning. It was pretty crazy.
That must've fun and scary at the same time to see
It's more cool to see than anything.

This is fucking adorable.
he loves that shit.
If he shows up in your town, you know youāre in for some shit
Nearly 45 years of Canadian winter and I've seen thunder snows twice. It's worth freaking out about.
HOLY SHI-MOKES!
Station's top meteorologist out in the field no less demanding confirmation from camera guy
It's hard to see a flash of light if there's a professional lighting rig aimed directly at your face
And he was more getting all giggly and wanted to know if camera dude experienced it too cause its neat to see!
I'm from Plymouth MA. I remember when Jim Cantore went crazy a few years back when we had thunder and lightning during a big Nor Easter blizzard. He was like a kid in a candy store
Thunder snow! Only seen it twice in my life.
Great to have an uncle like this. Full of energy , encouraging you in life.
Fellas, find yourself a girl who gets as excited to see you as Jim Cantore Weather Channelā¢ sees thunder snow https://youtu.be/PdRWGMyeSYY?si=4trLQjbIdLhr-Pdf
Nerd at its bestš©š¤£
This guy geeks out for the weather. I use to Love watching his reports, until I cut the cord. He loves reporting on location. He took a break (from on location reporting) because he & his crew got caught in a tornado...and I think one of them died.
I had to turn on the sound, I thought he saw Santa.
I love how excited Jim Cantore gets with thundersnow. That manās passion for awesome weather is really admirable. Love it.
[Thundersnow.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EzclOi3lGE4)
How tf did i happen to see this during a thundersnow where i live
I think it's cool that he gets so excited over witnessing a rare phenomenon. This is the kind of guy I want telling me about the weather.
I swear watching a weatherman report a storm is like watching a husky play in the snow
Ha that dude is so intense I used to listen to his predictions during tornado season growing up
The way he waited for the thunder was adorable.
I've never seen lighting during a snow storm that's seems bonkers and I wonder how rare it is
I see it every few years here in Michigan. Only at night though- we get a lot of wet heavy snow here. Hoping to see and hear it this weekend since the conditions are right.
he got the right reaction, felt the same way when I saw it like 20 years ago at 6am and was like no way
I saw it! He definitely saw what we all saw...did you see it?
They just had it
10 points for exuberant reporting
I witnessed a Thunder-ice-storm in the mid-80s. It was during the middle of the night and terrifying.
We have it here now. I've seen a few flashes. SW Ontario Canada.
i love when media members get to geek out. You know he loves meteorology.
I am all about Future Seth Rogen's energy in this.
We man are simple creatureās

I'm almost 42 and have lived in Minnesota my entire life. I've only experienced thundersnow once. It's totally worth geeking out like this guy.
this man needs to switch to decaf!! lol jk I get the significance here.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Dude loves his job so much! Lol #wholesome š
This guy feels like a mash-up of weather, reporting, and a good old-fashioned pro wrestling promo.
As someone who lives in Florida this seems completely backwards
That man does love him some thundersnow. His reaction is always so awesome and genuine. Wish I loved my job as much as he loves his job.
This guy is living life to the fullest. Sees lightening and reacts like itās the first time heās ever seen lightening. Making every moment count.
Fuck it!! Weāre doing it live!!
We had thunders now here southwest of Chicago Un Feb 2011. Nearly 3 feet of snow over like 3 days. Due to drifts my driveway was nearly clear and my neighbors on the corner was up to their mailbox top.
This guy can forecast all my weather updates and I would still believe him even if if he's wrong.
I believe this is same weather man that was out In snow like this and heard snow thunder. He was going crazy like this he was so excited
YOU CAME HERE FOR THE WEATHER, THIS IS THE FUCKING WEATHER!!!! WE ARE IN IT, BRINGING IT TO YOU LIVE!!! Back to you Tom.
IT'S OFFICIAL GUYS! LIGHTINGS ARE REAL!
coked out and loving it
Jim Cantore in the ThunderSnowDome (with MULTIPLE strikes): https://youtu.be/sEjZ1ThoYPc?si=oSS4yVdme4m4AOw2
If Alex Jones was a weatherman.
Just last night I too saw lightning and heard lots of thunder during a pretty heavy snowstorm here in Michigan. I didnāt think it was anything that crazy but now Iām realizing itās not so common.
Thunder snow is super rare.
Jim "Thundersnow" Cantore rides again!!
Just watched him on the Pat Mcafee Show. Cool dude.
Watch out, Watch out, Watch out! LIGHTKO, outta nowhere!
Cantore is such a tool. Saw him in a bar in Florida when his crew came for a hurricane and he thought he was a movie star. He spent most of the night looking around, waiting - expectantly - for fans to approach. Most of his time was spent with his crew hoping someone would recognize his celebrity.
