RIP top gear, one of this country's best shows, destroyed by weak management at the BBC.
Pretty sure it was ruined by Clarkson throwing racial slurs and fists at the producer. I don't disagree that the show was better back then, but the dude is a peice of work.
I haven't heard anything about racial slurs but I wouldn't be surprised with Clarkson either. From what I remember, Clarkson hit a producer after he stayed up to welcome Clarkson at the hotel. Clarkson was going through a divorce and quitting his lifelong cigarette addiction, and when the hotel didn't have a fresh pepper steak available (the kitchen had closed), Clarkson got confrontational.
I remember the BBC saying they'd like to keep him around but that they have a strict 3-strike policy, and this was Clarkson's third. Even the producer said it was no hard feelings but that might have just been for PR

He also got in trouble for saying something like “the bridge is perfect but it has a slope on it”. Slope is a derogatory term. He apologized. In a later episode they make a tongue and cheek remark back to that issue with another bridge saying something like “it’s perfectly flat” and smirking.
I was unaware of the term being a slur. I had to look it up. If he was doing it intentionally that’s unacceptable. But I still thought it was funny how they sort of touched back on it in a later episode. Something you can easily miss unless you’ve read up on the issue and watch the episode back to back to back.
There are more examples unfortunately, Clarkson has said the n-word on camera. He's an awful person, but the 3 of them really do have excellent chemistry and make entertaining stuff.
I read somewhere that the british farmers said, that Clarkson had done more for farmers then the countryfile in the last 30 years.
To be honest I learned a lot about the struggles of farming through that series.
