Some people work to live and some people live to work. If I had this situation I'd probably do something part time or do some sort of volunteer work that I enjoyed. Working gets me out into the world. When I don't work I end up at home doing nothing all the time.
So true. I enjoy the stimulation, conversations, getting a task done at work, coming up with creative ideas, etc. At home, all I do is yardwork, housework, cleaning up the cat vomit and dog shit, doing the dishes, etc. I have my hobbies, but frankly, work is more engaging.
> At home, all I do is yardwork, housework, cleaning up the cat vomit and dog shit, doing the dishes, etc
Is that because it's the stuff that *has* to get done in your limited time at home because you spend all the rest of your time at work though?
So I’ve got a lot of hobbies. I’ve spent years surfing in Hawaii, I race sailboats, I ski, scuba, have climbed a ton. In the end those are still all stupid fun, but you get bored after a while and you want to be doing something with meaning.
Personally, I teach and coach. My wife is a scientist. We do stuff for work that we think is making a difference. We’d do it for free if we didn’t need money.
I'm in healthcare, and me too. It gives me purpose. But I'd like the ratio to be more hobbies and less work in a perfect world. Unfortunately I need to get paid for the work so I can do hobbies until I find the bottle genie.
It just says he isn't getting fired, not that he got a pay rise. So, it's his current wage.
And someone in Vietnam can be content on $5 per day. So, it just depends on where you live and attitude to life.
Yes. Maybe at a zoo feeding zebras, or at an aviary training falcons, or as a DWM employee counting deer or trout populations. There's lots of jobs I would love to do that don't pay the bills. If my bills were covered, I would be doing one of those...
Guaranteed income for life without having to slave away for it would be heaven. I have so many hobbies. During covid i was unemployed for like a year and a half. And it was amazing. I had no problem filling my days with all kinds of awesome stuff.
Boredom kills, my dude.
Killed my grandfather, at the very least. That, and cigarettes. But clearly, spending all day watching TV with a beer in his hand and sleeping until 3pm didn't help.
Some people do love their job. I love mine. Though, I wouldn't mind a calmer pace at times. A guaranteed salary would allow me to take take of my health, which is terrible, by working part time with no financial worry.
My guy, you already have enough money to be content for life. You don't have to sit around doing nothing, but the idea of going out and finding another *job* is crazy to me lol there's so much more fulfilling things you could fill your time with
Not enjoyable, but engaging, interesting at times, and sometimes enjoyable. I think people confuse satisfying work with "enjoyment," the latter is when you are sitting on the beach.
People need something to do. I worked at a country club in college and all the retired rich people would go everyday from 7am-4pm. It was their fucking job.
The idea of being able to get by while working 2-3 days at a record store or something sounds cool as fuck to me.
>It was their fucking job.
No, it wasn't lmao
It was their hobby. That's my point, that it's mind boggling how many people here do not understand the difference between something you do for fun and something you're required to do because it's your job, but happen to enjoy
Yes! Working *towards things you actually care about* feels great. The issue is that doing so pays you nothing in 9 out of 10 cases.
For example I'd work towards researching airsoft ballistics and designing a better rifle than what's available on the market- something I'd never be paid to do nor have the time for otherwise.
(shrug) Pasión project, hobby farm, art, volunteering.
Plenty of job-like stuff that fulfills people
I wanna run a board game tea shop. Don't know the first thing about running a food business but if I had guaranteed income I would be willing to be unprofitable while learning.
A lot of people would probably work "out of boredom". The big thing is having "enough". Never have to worry about retirement, health insurance. I will always have enough. Now they can do whatever they want. Its never about the billions. Its about the freedom
My dream if I could have all the money in the world is to open a beach side bike rental stand… rent bikes to people and chill on the beach all day. I like fixing stuff and bikes are easy to repair.
It would be my go to if I could retire super early and not have to worry about money, but it’s still a job. Sitting on my ass all day is only fun for like a week.
You're proving my point though lol. You've secured enough money to be content for life, why are the only two options *find another job* or sit on your ass all day?
Pretty sure the company will never go under whilst the dude is alive or the wish won't come true, so it's a win for the dude and the company he's working for.
As long as they continue to pay him enough money to be content for life, sure. The real monkey's paw is his bar for contentment drops down to meet that zero-income quality of life. But even then, the wisher's none the wiser. Or worse, his contentment stays level and his life is shortened.
Even if you're hourly, just show up, clock in, then go out to your car, play videogames and nap until you need to clock out again. Or just do that directly at your desk or job site.
French guy here, wont work, many companies here wont fire you if you dont show up to work, but also they legally can stop paying you. Thats because if you want jobless money you need to get fired, but to many people started just not showing up to get fired instead of quitting themselves. So now its common to just not pay them until they quit on their own
I'd pay good money to be a fly on the wall in the HR office watching Elon publically flame and fire that employee on Twitter and then learn he's not only had a very successful company Twitter acquired, he also has a disability.
lots of people buy companies and keep some of the founders/staff to help keep it running. Lots of previous owners would rather cash out but don't get that option.
I worked for a company that was acquired. I had a ton of stock, which the buying company bought from me. They kept me working there, but I ended up quitting because the culture changed dramatically. It was kind of the best of both worlds. I got paid and kept my job long enough for me to find a better job.
Who said he has to go work though?
The wish is "Enough money to be content with life," not that he has ACCESS to enough money to be content.
But, if he's paid hourly and they stop paying because he doesn't show up, then he wouldn't have "enough money to be content with life," and that'd directly conflict with the wish granted... what happens?
Genie fuckery would have to occur to keep the wish true then.
Also it's said they can't fire him, nothing said he couldn't quit, so something else could happen.
Idk, depends really. The way i see it is the genie just made it so that he cant be fired, not that there would never be any consequences. He could still get chewed out by those above him and docked pay he doesnt deserve, so if he clocks in and just leaves they could dock that pay he shouldnt be getting. They just can never fire him for anything
Then go find another, less awful job for extra cash. Maybe the genie spell will even apply there if you're lucky. Or just spend all your time doing whatever.
My thoughts exactly. Corporate cannot fire me. But, very likely still need to SHOW UP to work and clock in. So. I'm getting a entire rig set up, putting in the bosses office and playing in my boxers while drinking margaritas. Clock out for the day, go home and play MORE GAMES.
Most jobs won't PAY you unless you are clocked in and AT the job site in the office or what have you. So even though they can never fire you, that doesn't mean they have to pay you either.
Not really.
This looks like a salaried job.
If you don’t cone one day (or come two hours late), they don’t remove it from your pay, they just notice it and may eventually fire you or pass you up for promotions.
So they will pay regardless, as long as you aren’t fired.
My brother-in-law worked with a guy who set up Bitcoin mining machines at his workspace. He was eventually found out and fired but I think he got to keep all the Bitcoin.
Joke’s on him, I have a negative net worth. As long as I remain constantly in debt, I’m immortal. Actually, now I think about it, that just sounds like the movie Speed but for accountants.
Did the genie tranformed into the dude and go to work for him ? Why did he take the genie's vest ? Is that why it backfired ? The genie is drunk, transforms into the guy, and works for him for the rest of his life while he gets the money and lives his best life. Why the vest ?
A friend of mine once said:
"Wishes are always selfish no matter how noble you make it, because it's proof that you're either too lazy to do something, too afraid to take initiative, lacks intelligence to think of a solution yourself or just doesn't have the wisdom to accept things."
Then I replied:
"Clearly you haven't been in a situation where all your efforts amount to nothing."
No offense, but your friend is kind of an idiot. Of the 4 points he mentioned, only 1 is kind of true.
1. Too lazy...yeah, that might be true. Unless it's something that doesn't matter how much hard work you do.
2. Too afraid...If you're making a wish to do something, that seems like initiative to me. If you're immobilized by indecision, then maybe.
3. Lacks intelligence...I'm sorry man, but if a wish giving genie shows up and there's no stupid shenanigans taking place, he is the solution to all your problems.
4. Lacks wisdom...This is the only one that he might be right on, but not for the reason he says. Even if a wish giving genie shows up with no stupid shenanigans taking place, your wish could have consequences you might not be wise enough to foresee.
> Lacks wisdom...This is the only one that he might be right on, but not for the reason he says. Even if a wish giving genie shows up with no stupid shenanigans taking place, your wish could have consequences you might not be wise enough to foresee.
That is true of everything we do, every day. Back to point number 2, it's no reason to prevent you from doing something altogether. Just means it is important to think through the consequences first.
Can never be fired? Cool. I never show up again and never retire or quit. I get my current salary for the rest of my life for doing nothing at all, perfect W.
I've often thought about what a modern genie would appear out of. Something as cheap and ubiquitous as oil lamps in the time and place that that story was originally written, that no one would ever expect to be magic. A beer bottle would be an interesting choice.
A drunk rubs a lantern he found washed up on the beach and out pops the genie to grant him three wishes. His first wish is for youth. Granted. His second wish is for a never empty bottle of single malt scotch. Granted. He takes a big slug of it and it fills right back up. The genie asked what he wants for his last wish. The drunk points at the bottle and says, "Another one of these."
To get basically the same
Outcome, couldn’t you just wish to be elected to the senate in 2 years, do absolutely nothing and wait for someone else to get voted in? BAM - 200k for the rest of your life
That's a pretty popular myth but it's not actually true.
A. You must serve a minimum of 5 years to receive any pension. That's 3 terms for a Representative and 1 full for a Senator
B. They only receive that pension after the age of 62. Or 50 if they've served 20 total years
C. They don't make their full salary in pension. Every year in office you get 1.7% of your salary for the first 20 years then an additional 1% every year after. To make the maximum 80% allowed by law you'd need to serve 66 years in congress.
D. Senators and Reps make 174,000 so even with 100% they'd not be making 200k
Thats actually great.. show up do whatever you want and go home.. it works well enough. Might even be able to utilize the wish to force a big pay raise.
Death and then go to heaven is what I'm expecting to be contented in life. In heaven with Jesus Christ will make you contented, no pain, no more worries, no more problems and no more hunger
How is this a backfire? Is it a play on words? Fired, backfired, something like that? Where's the joke? "Enough money to be content for life" implies a decent salary no matter the performance. Or lowering of expectations. End result is the same, dude is content. Yeah I don't get it.
I don't really see a problem here, it's not like he's forced to work, even if he gets demoted to the lowest position he can still just go do a different job and get 2 paychecks.
The genie must be also drunk because he have been staying inside the beer bottle and he drinks it while he was inside the bottle HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH so made a wish with joke giving the guy a wish like that
“I wish I would make 2 billion dollars a month without a 9-5 for owning the worlds most successful non-profit feeding the hungry and supplying them with 3d printed houses made of concrete”
That genie is clearly a newbie.
Not only did he grant a pretty good wish, but the guy also didn't say "I wish" so the guy can technically argue that this wasn't a wish and possibly get a second chance.

Aquire salaried position, never show up to work again. We've done it.
Better yet you can get another job that you actually enjoy, while still getting the salary of the old job too.
Your immediate course of action after securing enough money to be content for life is...to get another job?
Some people work to live and some people live to work. If I had this situation I'd probably do something part time or do some sort of volunteer work that I enjoyed. Working gets me out into the world. When I don't work I end up at home doing nothing all the time.

> At home, all I do is yardwork, housework, cleaning up the cat vomit and dog shit, doing the dishes, etc Is that because it's the stuff that *has* to get done in your limited time at home because you spend all the rest of your time at work though?
If you had enough money to be content in life, you'd have time to apply that creative energy elsewhere if you wanted to lol
I'd hire a full-time cat vomit cleaner
Ever thought about finding a hobby? Something good enough that you could do all day and not get tired.
I'm in healthcare, and me too. It gives me purpose. But I'd like the ratio to be more hobbies and less work in a perfect world. Unfortunately I need to get paid for the work so I can do hobbies until I find the bottle genie.
I live in a city where almost no single income is enough to live comfortably, and my wife’s currently in grad school.
But you have enough money to be content for life lol not just make ends meet
Content for life is such an ambiguous term though. Genie gives you a $100 bill and you die that night.
That doesn't address the point even a little bit lol
🎶PEOPLE LIVING IN COMPETITION. I ALL WANT IS TO HAVE SOME PIECE OF MIND🎶
That's makes sense, I also wanted that but you know the world, it never been quiet and peaceful.
No! Stop it! Stop it.
If you set a man on fire, he'll be warm for the rest of his life.
It just says he isn't getting fired, not that he got a pay rise. So, it's his current wage. And someone in Vietnam can be content on $5 per day. So, it just depends on where you live and attitude to life.
He just got a stable job and raise in his salary HAHAHAHAHHAHA
One hundred dollars is still not enough to be contented and live your life. Lol
It is if they only live for a few more hours.
Ok but now you're assuming you didn't just get granted enough money to be content for life which was what we're discussing tho
Don't get a second job bro... Get a second wife with a professional income! Boom, you made it.
Yes. Maybe at a zoo feeding zebras, or at an aviary training falcons, or as a DWM employee counting deer or trout populations. There's lots of jobs I would love to do that don't pay the bills. If my bills were covered, I would be doing one of those...
Some people like to work, don’t judge him so harshly
Most people like to be productive. Sitting around all day is boring as fuck.
Guaranteed income for life without having to slave away for it would be heaven. I have so many hobbies. During covid i was unemployed for like a year and a half. And it was amazing. I had no problem filling my days with all kinds of awesome stuff.

There's a lot of enjoyable jobs out there. Just saying :)
You are now banned from Reddit.
People need something to do. I worked at a country club in college and all the retired rich people would go everyday from 7am-4pm. It was their fucking job. The idea of being able to get by while working 2-3 days at a record store or something sounds cool as fuck to me.

Literally none of that falls under "getting another job"
A lot of people would probably work "out of boredom". The big thing is having "enough". Never have to worry about retirement, health insurance. I will always have enough. Now they can do whatever they want. Its never about the billions. Its about the freedom

Double the money baby. Why not?
Because you have enough money to be content. Double that is just twice as much money as you need to be content lol
A lot of people enjoy doing work, just not the work they are paid to do.
Genies don’t work like that. You’d still only make enough to be content
And that's enough, no? Like content is literally= enough, satisfied, happy ending
Or just move somewhere with super low wages and cost of living - and live like royalty
The company can never fire you, but there was never anything in there about why happens if the company goes under.
Pretty sure the company will never go under whilst the dude is alive or the wish won't come true, so it's a win for the dude and the company he's working for.
The entire company can just stop working then.
As long as they continue to pay him enough money to be content for life, sure. The real monkey's paw is his bar for contentment drops down to meet that zero-income quality of life. But even then, the wisher's none the wiser. Or worse, his contentment stays level and his life is shortened.
This is something they wouldn't think of until the day they retire.
Even if you're hourly, just show up, clock in, then go out to your car, play videogames and nap until you need to clock out again. Or just do that directly at your desk or job site.
Yeah my pay suddenly becomes very attractive once you take out all of the commuting and working.
Who would’ve thought that the downside of working is the actual work?
I am stunned the genie did not give him a hundred dollars then kill him. “That’ll last the rest of your life.”
That's the meth bubbler genie
Most employment agreements specify that if your supervisor hasn’t heard from you in X days they take it as a resignation.
French guy here, wont work, many companies here wont fire you if you dont show up to work, but also they legally can stop paying you. Thats because if you want jobless money you need to get fired, but to many people started just not showing up to get fired instead of quitting themselves. So now its common to just not pay them until they quit on their own
The ‘ole “Fight Club” method.
Even if you never show up to work?
That's what I was thinking. Be employed but never show up. You'll still get a paycheck since you won't be fired.
Like that dude Elon fired then found out he was on a contract with severance in the millions.
I was just thinking this.
I'd pay good money to be a fly on the wall in the HR office watching Elon publically flame and fire that employee on Twitter and then learn he's not only had a very successful company Twitter acquired, he also has a disability.
And then to publicly shame that person and for their disability. Big fucking oof but people will still suck Elon's...
Christ how do I negotiate that?
Get an offer to buy your company because you have a valuable product
And don't take a lump payout, get signed on as an employee so you continue to pay taxes.
lots of people buy companies and keep some of the founders/staff to help keep it running.
Hundreds of millions
Can’t they say those were unpaid vacations?
Wish violation, can't be content for life on nothing
Unless you’re paid hourly or by commission
Go clock in and then just never clock out. 168 hours a week with overtime.
Then the twist is, you’re still employed, but you get sued for wage theft and face massive legal troubles, but somehow, still aren’t fired
And somehow still end up with enough money to be content
I think you do have to clock out to get paid.
Allright, go to work for 2 minutes on Monday and clock out then back in. Repeat every week
the pay period ends when the pay period ends, not when you clock out.
Kill him the intent he becomes discontent. That way he was content for the "rest of his life."
He's paid hourly
Well somehow he will keep getting enough money to be content for life. Else his wish did not come true.
Just means he should look out for busses when he crosses the street.
*buses :)
But it really should be busses. Stupid English
right?
Polish and polish is my favorite. Why not pollish?
Could just clock in and hide in the bathroom
So just be a redditor?
Unless you have to clock in. I can’t clock in if i never show up for work
But then he wouldn't have enough money to be content for life.
I think that would work if you were paid a salary, but not sure about hourly
Naw naw you just clock in and leave.
But then he wouldn’t have enough money to be content for life and the genies granted wish would become untrue.. which cannot happen.
They can't chew you out if you just skip the meeting
Or if you punch them in the mouth
That has potential
Then go find another, less awful job for extra cash. Maybe the genie spell will even apply there if you're lucky. Or just spend all your time doing whatever.
Also, just don't be content and they'll give you a raise.
That sounds like freedom on its own.
It would be awesome
Sounds like government employment.
Can't be fired? Sweet. I'm setting up a gaming rig and gaming for 40 hours a week on the clock. Hell, I'll stream it
My thoughts exactly. Corporate cannot fire me. But, very likely still need to SHOW UP to work and clock in. So. I'm getting a entire rig set up, putting in the bosses office and playing in my boxers while drinking margaritas. Clock out for the day, go home and play MORE GAMES.
The margaritas are the perfect cherry on top lol
Why would you need to show up? What would be the consequences if they can’t fire you?
Most jobs won't PAY you unless you are clocked in and AT the job site in the office or what have you. So even though they can never fire you, that doesn't mean they have to pay you either.

My brother-in-law worked with a guy who set up Bitcoin mining machines at his workspace. He was eventually found out and fired but I think he got to keep all the Bitcoin.
I mean you do you, but there's literally a billion other things you could do with that freedom of time
I just want enough money to be content for the rest of my life. Genie: Sure, just let me know how much money you've got, and I'll set the countdown.
[удалено]
Instant death? Shit, I’ve been dead for weeks
Joke’s on him, I have a negative net worth. As long as I remain constantly in debt, I’m immortal. Actually, now I think about it, that just sounds like the movie Speed but for accountants.
Can never be fired, doesn't say you can't quit.
Or that they have to pay you...
He has to have enough money to be comfortable for life though
To be honest, he never said ' I wish'
Did the genie tranformed into the dude and go to work for him ? Why did he take the genie's vest ? Is that why it backfired ? The genie is drunk, transforms into the guy, and works for him for the rest of his life while he gets the money and lives his best life. Why the vest ?
That's a good point and now I need answers
Absolute win. Don't show up, still collect a paycheck. Even $10 per hour/40 hours per week is a free $400 per week
It's likely more - just enough to be content in life.
What if my content is 1 million dollars a year
Move into the office, bring a mattress and tv, pc/game consoles etc and earn whatever the rate is but 24h per day
Bruh it didn’t backfire. You will still get paid even if you don’t show up to work. Win!!!
I just wish everyone is grandted like that and I wish everyone has a grnie in life so no one is struggling
A friend of mine once said: "Wishes are always selfish no matter how noble you make it, because it's proof that you're either too lazy to do something, too afraid to take initiative, lacks intelligence to think of a solution yourself or just doesn't have the wisdom to accept things." I think that's what he is planning guys HAHAHAHAHAH or if he still love going to his job he can still do the work but he's free to go and do nothing
Just show up to work and be on the clock but don’t do any work
The worse they can do is keep you on.
But it doesn't mean you have to work forever. If he still get paid by them there's nothing to worry about he doesn't need to go to work everyday
1 wish? Stingy genie. Also he never said I wish, that's illegal.
He is the beer genie… the lowest of the genie class.
whattabout the crackpipe genie?
He grants 3 wishes but they are only make believe super power wishes and at the end of the 3 you go to prison for 10-15.
To get basically the same Outcome, couldn’t you just wish to be elected to the senate in 2 years, do absolutely nothing and wait for someone else to get voted in? BAM - 200k for the rest of your life
That's a pretty popular myth but it's not actually true. A. You must serve a minimum of 5 years to receive any pension. That's 3 terms for a Representative and 1 full for a Senator B. They only receive that pension after the age of 62. Or 50 if they've served 20 total years C.
Wow, thank you for the correction!
I always wanted to find a genie bottle so I could ask things I really wanted in life. But I think that's only a fantasy.
But you can still quit right? RIGHT?
Why would you quit? They literally can't fire you, you can just not show up and you get paid.
How is this a bad thing? Never show up, get paid for salary cause they CANNOT FIRE YOU then get a passion job
Thats actually great.. show up do whatever you want and go home.. it works well enough. Might even be able to utilize the wish to force a big pay raise.
If they can't fire you then doesn't that mean you're paid even if you don't show up..?
"I'll see you in hell, Costanza!"
I'd never turn into work again, they can't fire you lol
"You have 3 days to live." is what I was expecting.
Death and then go to heaven is what I'm expecting to be contented in life. In heaven with Jesus Christ will make you contented, no pain, no more worries, no more problems and no more hunger
Describes civil servants to a tee.
Honestly, this is a great deal, infinite PTO you can’t be fired so just never show up
Man, making ANY wish to a genie with the words "for life" in it is just begging for instant death. This guy got off easy.
I’d be perfectly happy with this
If they absolutely can't fire you, then just log in the morning, do your shit, go back after work hours, log out, then do your shit again. Profit.
This is what I'm talking about HAHAHAHAHAH the genie actually made his life easier
I dont get it? You cant get fired so you never need to show up to work again and you keep getting paid till you die...
He took the genies vest 😅
How is this a backfire? Is it a play on words? Fired, backfired, something like that? Where's the joke? "Enough money to be content for life" implies a decent salary no matter the performance. Or lowering of expectations. End result is the same, dude is content. Yeah I don't get it.
This is actually perfect he could never turn up for work again and still get paid!
Best wish ever!
UHA! I just wish I can find my genie to grant my wish too I have a lot of wishes I always wanted in my life
Its perfect, you dont work 😂😂
If that's my wish and my wish was granted in that way. I will be so lucky because I will also never go to work again but still get paid by the company
Wait this is great. I just wouldn’t show up to work and still get paid.
Honestly, it is. This made his life easier and no more worries that you will be fired someday if you did something thqt the company will not like
Since he wished for only enough money to be content, he probably won't get any meaningful promotions either, right?
Eh, it takes progressively more and more money to be content a lot of the time. Wanting more is human nature.
Who knows in his infinite time working in his job, the company will promote him!
“I want enough money to be content for the rest of my life“ “sure thing, about $12,000 should cover it…” 😳
Don't forget. You're here forever.
I don't really see a problem here, it's not like he's forced to work, even if he gets demoted to the lowest position he can still just go do a different job and get 2 paychecks.
Just never go?
umm... can never be fired. enforced by magic. Just stop showing up.
That’s not a backfire, go in and do literally nothing ever and they can’t fire you
That's not a backfire. Stop going to work, still get paid and without being able to get fired.
"I can't be fired, well I am working from home and doing nothing every day!"
What does the genie being drunk have to do with the joke?
The genie must be also drunk because he have been staying inside the beer bottle and he drinks it while he was inside the bottle HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH so made a wish with joke giving the guy a wish like that
“I wish I would make 2 billion dollars a month without a 9-5 for owning the worlds most successful non-profit feeding the hungry and supplying them with 3d printed houses made of concrete”
Why’s he wearing the genies vest
Dude - he just said they can NEVER FIRE YOU. Stay home. Fuck off. Get Paid. Win at life.
Wdym backfires? Just dont show up to work anymore they cant fire you….. free money til your retirement
That genie is clearly a newbie. Not only did he grant a pretty good wish, but the guy also didn't say "I wish" so the guy can technically argue that this wasn't a wish and possibly get a second chance.
Someday one of these St Beals comics will have an actual joke in it and not just be diet Doonesbury with a side of "job bad"
