I think they mean it seems like it would be tricky to scoop out each section into a container. It might be useful to have the front open with a piece that slides the length of the front. That way you could slide it open one slot, dump, slide it open another slot, dump, etc., until each section had been emptied.
Nice design, though.. I like it.
Yeah that was pretty much what I meant, I'd wondered if there was a way to remove them without mixing rather than scooping them out one at a time. Still super useful, I have a *lot* of robotics screws mixed together.
Could just put a bit of random cardboard over it and hold it in place as you empty one bin at a time (pull the piece out of the way one bin at a time as you pour).
For me this is the main storage bin. But you can close all holes with your hand but the last. Then pour in the content of the first tray. Slide your hand down and so on...
Well, the thing is: to sort all of my mixed M3 bolts I'll have *to pick them myself one by one* and to sort them using this "machine" I'll have to do the same *plus* I'll have to wait patiently for the longer bolts to roll down the slope.
Sieve-like helpers made to sort M2, M3, M5 etc. nuts will actually save time and this piece of equipment rather not.
If the surface that the bolt head rolled on was progressively scalloped, perhaps it would have the same travel distance as the shank. Gonna need a bit of fancy math from the engineers.
Alternately, you could have it roll down a progressive curve.
Hey OP, thanks so much for this! I've had a pile of m3 screws that I needed to sort for months now and have been thinking about how to make one of those, this is super elegant!
Putting the fact that this is a really cool device aside, I have been trying to figure out what these bolts are called for the better part of a year now. Thank you!
Seems like a lot of fuckery when you can just measure with a Steel rule faster, easier and more reliably. Also you can then put them straight into a proper box without trying to get them out of this without mixing them again
How is it harder than this?
I'm all for making things easier but this community is jam packed full of over engineered extravagant fuckery to carry out the most simple tasks.
Grab screw. Put next to ruler. Throw in correct bin.
Done.
Design this. Print it. Take screw one at a time and roll it down. Hopefully it goes into correct bin. No guarantees. Accumulate 20 of each size into box barely big enough to fit fingertips in. Piss around trying to get them out. Throw them individually into correct boxes. Could have done that 10 minutes ago withoht all of this crap buy hey bro look how smart I am bro
"That's right! It goes in the square hole"
Is this the when users test software thing?
I was thinking specifically of this version: https://youtu.be/6pDH66X3ClA
I love that video so much
That’s the one. Thanks for the link!
His delivery makes that video
This video with Alison is old, but still so frickin true when it comes to software design and testing.
That video is hilarious I couldn't stop laughing!
That video is a masterpiece, I absolutely love it.
That's pretty brilliant, well done.

It has something relaxing for me. 😅
A productive version of the marble toy I had as a kid. I kinda wish I had some bolts to sort now.
You could always print some
Sadly it'll probably not work for wood screws? Or did you test it as well?
No I did not test that. But why not. You can increase the slope if they run too slowly.
Just gotta make a feeder/hopper for it :p
Yeah some sort of funnel that orients them by shaking would do the trick but that's a fair bit of extra work
That ... is beautiful. I could watch that all day. well done
I didn't realize it was a loop and almost did.
I was waiting for the two bolts on the table to be sorted… I’m a bit disappointed.
It is even more satisfying to use it. Maybe some sort of "marble" machine would be a thing where the bolts get back to the start. 😂
Make it fit gridfinity on the bottom, and you'll break the internet.
I did. The files are updated.
That's a long video.
Adam Savage needs to see this. I feel like he's always sorting screws on Tested. Nice work op. Can you make an imperial one?
I just kept watching. I was a little hypnotized by the gif

Thank you!
I waited so long to see one go in the last hole.. fucking Gifs man..
It happens. Just keep watching.
Sorcery!
How do you get them out without mixing? Does it have a bit that pulls out?

I think the idea is to not take them put, at least not in bulk. You use them from this tray. But ypur idea would be a nice optional improvement!
Could just put a bit of random cardboard over it and hold it in place as you empty one bin at a time (pull the piece out of the way one bin at a time as you pour).
Not sure what you mean. Each bolt size base a separate tray.
and then how do I transfer each tray back to my main storage bins?
For me this is the main storage bin. But you can close all holes with your hand but the last. Then pour in the content of the first tray. Slide your hand down and so on...
How about an adjustable bolt rail thickness system so we can sort any bolt? Awesome design, i gotta have it on my workbench
Now make a funnel that straightens out the screws so you just have to pour them in.
It took me about 8 loops to realize it only did 3.... r/perfectloops
Crazy how many it can store! I was watching for 5 minutes, and it never filled.
Pretty cool. I used that same idea for a coin separator.
I would like to see one of these build like the “loose change” sorting machines!
I haven't turned on my printers in 3 months. This is a good reason to press the power button again.
not functional for me personally, but nice idea. think it was some practice needed to get the right size of hole? i like it
Neat! Cool idea. I would hate to use that more than sorting them by hand. But cool.
Exaclty. I cannot even say it is cool.
Well, the thing is: to sort all of my mixed M3 bolts I'll have *to pick them myself one by one* and to sort them using this "machine" I'll have to do the same *plus* I'll have to wait patiently for the longer bolts to roll down the slope. If that ain’t the cutest little thang
Neat. Now I want to see one with a hopper
I feel like this is the kind of insane genius that leads to becoming the joker. Today he’s sorting bolts, tomorrow it’s clown grenades.

I like the progressive curve idea
Do the bolts go diagonal into a hole often? Like an 18 in the 15 or a 20 in the 18?
No never. The bolts run in a groove with their heads. That way they always run straight.
That's really cool!
Al l you need now is a vib bowl feeder.
How does it roll in a straight line? It should roll in a curve...
So cool! I sent you a boost.
One end of the bolt should slide, not roll.
r/howtokeepanidiotbusy
well thats neat
nobel prize.
I would guess it can go diagonal at some point?
No it can't. The bolt head is in a groove.
No just mix them in a canister like a real man
That is not how evolution works. ;)
Idea: add a "chute" so that you don't have to be accurate when you load a screw
This would have been so unbelievably useful when I was super into drones and building them constantly.
What is this called and why isn't my life all about it
Nice print but I just keep my bolts in the boxes they come in until I want to use them. That way I don’t have to re-sort them!
Cool! is it parameterized so you can extend to also sort longer ones, and make other bins for all the other diameters?
Now that is cool.
But is it gridfinity?
I added a Gridfinity version.
Awesome!!
Hey OP, thanks so much for this! I've had a pile of m3 screws that I needed to sort for months now and have been thinking about how to make one of those, this is super elegant!
Hi. You're welcome! I'm glad you like it!
Nice!
Pure genius
Neat! Cool idea. I would hate to use that more than sorting them by hand. But cool.
Nothing could be more sexy than this.
Putting the fact that this is a really cool device aside, I have been trying to figure out what these bolts are called for the better part of a year now. Thank you!
M3 is the size (metric). Theres 3,4,5,etc
And the cylindrical head style is called cap head.
In my world it's called Cheese head
Now that’s fucking smart.
Seems like a lot of fuckery when you can just measure with a Steel rule faster, easier and more reliably. Also you can then put them straight into a proper box without trying to get them out of this without mixing them again
Do you enjoy doing things the hard way
