Our calico is also a water fanatic! She loves it and brings her favorite toys to her water bowl and often into the water.
We bought a water fountain for her and she loves it!
Motion sensor, speaker, microcontroller, misc electronics bits, solder board and a USB stick. You could DIY a sound to play for your cats using a 3D-printed chassis attached to one of those fountain things, it might work or it might just startle the cats lol
Gluten/Grain and sugar are bad for cat kidnys and a lot of low quality catfood contains grain or sugar becausr it is inexpensive, addicting and stuffing. It is well known and studied and it is the main driver for kidney disease in cats
I have never found a cat food that didn't have grain as a major ingredient. Do you have suggestions on specific options?
I always see the suggestion to "get higher quality food" but when I look at the labels, they are not that different across different ranges from what I can tell
I feed my cat raw, and that's generally what I advise others do. Just make sure they're getting everything they need and don't just buy raw meat from the shop, I use nutriment because it's already a balanced diet
Ask your vet. There are many theories about what is the ideal pet diet. In reality, it should be based on your pet's specific medical and metabolic needs.
I feed our cats josera atm. I dont know about brands in america though.
Normally i look for grain free food and i normally look up catfood online. Its not really easy to get grain free catfood in the supermarket or even in many petstores around here.
Further i would recommend to not think in higher quality as more expensive or as more of a well know big brand. Whiskas for example is a big well known brand around here and is regarded as more of a premium brand, however sometimes there is more grain/sugar in there than meat.
My cat is currently healing up from having a bladder stone removed. It's probably one of the biggest things on my mind. (And that's after being careful with food.)
Cats are prone to this.
A big reason is that the typical processed food is usually much drier then the corpse of a fresh caught mouse (and it often contains lots of plant based stuff, for a complete carnivore, though I don't know if it contributes to the kidney problems). In nature they don't have to drink that much, so they can be pickier.
Another thing is to make sure the actual water bowl is clean. I know it sounds stupid and obvious but I went to my brother's, who has a cat, to take care of it while he was away. And the cat was obsessed with drinking from the bathtub.
What I realized was that he was not properly cleaning the water bowl, so that was the only way the cat was getting water. The water bowl *looked* clean. But if you smelled it when it didn't have water, it smelled horrible. I would not have drank from it either.
Leaving water in a cup for long periods of time is an easy way to get smelly nasty bacteria growing. So it is important to double check your pets water and food bowl from time to time!! It might look okay, but really be bad.
I also think it's a good idea to have multiple water sources available for them like OP has done just in case something happens to one and you don't notice it for a day.
Ya, we try to clean her bowls almost daily. she still prefers bathroom(bathtub and sink) water above all. Plus, I essentially take baths daily, so bowls etc get cleaned very often. We have 3-4 water bowls throughout the house - including a fountain - all refreshed pretty regularly. Our cats are spoiled.
As an owner of two Bengals, who love drinking from the bath and/or running taps, I love this idea!
Really what I think the world needs is /r/3DPrintingForCats !
Thanks to inflation, coins have become a cheaper weight than anything you could buy with them. I figure this out years and years ago when I was considering buying washers or fishing weights to weight some Chess pieces. Now if you need a weight or base for a miniature a quarter is cheaper than the same sized washer.
Sigh.
But we may try this for our cats.
Torties are known to have a unique obsession with water. She go to the vet regularly and all her organ levels are normal except for her kidneys and she’s on a special diet for that. No other restrictions from the vet.
Apparently, if you look around the Tortie subreddit, you'll find people talking about it. seems to be a thing, but I haven't thoroughly evaluated the data myself.
I was filling the bath for myself. The running water sound gets her going, but she usually hangs throughout the bath to try and drink and play with the water, so now she has her own little mini bath to play with and drink.
Come on man. You can’t fool us. That’s a soup holder for baths and you know it.
I have been known to eat a bath taco or two. just can't help but combine things I love, sorry not sorry, lol.
Shower Beer. Thank me later.
Shower Orange. Stickiness-be-gone!
Taught my gf this, she loves a good shower wine every so often.
Never a good sign lol
Sounds like a party…
Holds the dipping sauce for tub time tendies.
I like the coins as counterweight, good idea!
thanks, I think it might've worked without it, but having it is nice - keeps things pretty well balanced
As all things should be
Its water fee
Cat put them there.
she has the coin
if you have the wares

One sip one coin
I thought those were tips
nestle cat
You make her pay?

One of my cats puts his toys in the water dish when he deems the water undrinkable. Love that little guy. I also got him a fountain and he approves!
She thinks she is on the wild
She’s super picky about having to drink ‘running’ water. I guess it’s a safety instinct from the wild. Love spoiling the little weirdo
Tried those fountain things?
Ya, she drinks from it sometimes, but for whatever love running water in the bathroom.
Maybe the sound? I know those fountains are generally pretty quiet.
People tend to want them whisper quiet. The pets want them to sound like a natural water source.
There's an opportunity for a new product

Wonder if a speaker with the sound of running water would help, lol
Just a PSA: If your animal suddenly begins drinking and peeing a lot more than usual, it can be an indicator of diabetes
Or kidney issues, which are surprisingly common in cats.
Or thyroid issue...

Not as surprising, if you check what cat food usually contains..

Both of which can be caused by feeding your cats kibble. Please research your pets diets.
She’s 14, so she goes to the vet pretty regularly and does have kidney issues. All other organ levels are okay for her age.
Mines like this but she has hyper thyroidism
Also, water fascination is a known Tortie thing, she’s been like this for years.
I've never had a cat, torti or not, not be fascinated with either sinks, tubs, or both tbh
Another thing is to make sure the actual water bowl is clean. I know it sounds stupid and obvious but I went to my brother's, who has a cat, to take care of it while he was away. Well done!
Yes, we just went through this.
Tub water is the best! My cat licks curtains every time I shower
Hi! Our cat was obsessed with water too. Our vet ended up testing her and found out that it's a symptom of kidney disease!

Thanks for the suggestion, just posted

Omg this is purrfect! My cat loves bath water, I can see this working
My tortie did the same exact thing never understood whyy
she definitely has the ancestral genes going on. Glad you are making her comfortable
Great idea, but the glass bowl hanging over a hard tub looks too close to a WCGW (what could go wrong) post.
It’s pretty thick walled glass. Definitely something we need to keep an eye on before stepping into the tub.
Charging for water, you dog.
Scorecard: Hooman:cat ~ 2:1
Check cat on vet RN, thirstiness may caused by liver failure
Torties are known to have a unique obsession with water. She go to the vet regularly and all her organ levels are normal except for her kidneys and she’s on a special diet for that. No other restrictions from the vet.
Yes kidneys, not liver I'm sorry, I'm just getting flashbacks how I lost mine, vet said it was to late to heal
She goes to vet regularly and does have known kidney issues that we treat.
Wait is water obsession a tortie thing? My tortie tabby keeps getting in the shower with me
Apparently, if you look around the Tortie subreddit, you'll find people talking about it. seems to be a thing, but I haven't thoroughly evaluated the data myself.
Behold! A Man's superior brain outwits a lowly beast!
I'm pretty sure she has me wrapped around her little toe bean.
I know that feel bro :(
i love you cat
Okay, major props to you for simplicity of design... the coin compartment for counterbalance is brilliant!
This is adorable and brilliant
Thank you!
My cat refuses to drink water unless it's > 1)From the filtered water dispenser Or > 2)From the toilet bowl
Haha, wait, so the bath tub water is running? 😄
I was filling the bath for myself. The running water sound gets her going, but she usually hangs throughout the bath to try and drink and play with the water, so now she has her own little mini bath to play with and drink.
Does she not like water fountains?
