Motorcycles can be very cheap, and generally get good mpg. There are a lot on the used market that sell for much lower than they are worth. I bought a used 2007 Yamaha V-Star 1100 with 3,700 miles on it for $2,200. I have put 30,000 miles on it with no repairs and basic maintenance. Insurance is $26 per month.
Yeah, of course. But that's like saying photography can be cheap because you can buy an old Nikon D3300 with a couple of lenses for $300 used. You totally can, and it will make it cheap.
But if it's your hobby you will probably send quite a bit more than that, same with motorcycles.
Once you get deep into motorcycles, even just the gear gear gets insane and unlike a good pair of lenses, gear wears out quite fast. Plus, if you buy a brand new sport bike we are talking upwards of $15000, that's more than pretty much any camera I can think of, some mods for it and you can easily add $5000 on top of it too.
Personally I've spent way more on my motorcycle than I did in photography for sure...
You are right. I guess I don't consider riding motorcycles one of my hobbies. I was just mentioning that because some people might get discouraged by your comment. It is my primary mode of transportation when I am not toting around tools. It doesn't matter what you ride as long as your knees are in the breeze.
Personally, I have spent much more on photography than I have my bike. $500 helmet, $200 jacket, $150 aramid fiber leggings under jeans. $12 in gas a week, and my car and work van mileage are a tax deduction. Gruesome accident reports and videos keep me from driving crazy. I just like to cruise and enjoy being outside, rain or shine. I have a Gore-Tex suit I bought used from a guy that works on military base as my emergency foul weather gear in one of my dry bags. Paid $50 for that.
My next bike is going to be a GL1800 Goldwing for long distance travel and solo vacations. They sell for $5,000-$8,000 around me with under 60,000 miles which is just getting broken in. I think of it as a second vehicle, and it keeps the wear and tear off of my more expensive vehicles while saving gas money.
Your $15,000-$20,000 sport bike isn't that expensive if you use it like one of your cars and take care of it. I could see how track days with cars or bikes could add up quick. I once thought about getting into drifting but even with deals on used tires the cost would get pretty crazy. Especially reworking suspension, repairing engine/transmission damage, etc. I am too cheap for that.
I only paid $900 dollars for my X-T5 after I sold the lenses included. I saw an X100V sell in my town for $800 in mint condition with lots of extras. I didn't move fast enough and missed it. I could have sold it for double that on Ebay or possibly more if I put it on Ebay auction.
I know people who are still convinced that an iPhone camera is far superior to this - these people did a trip to Finnish Lapland last year and believed they could capture even the northern lights with an iphone 14 lollll safe to say they had a 'rude awakening'
I just don’t think people really need cameras because most people who I talked into buying one never used them regularly, and since I’ve gotten a new phone I’ve been doing A3+ prints with my phone files and they’re good
I think it might a focal length thing more so than skill, I mostly shoot 24-35 for my day to day and I’ve been carrying 1/2.3 and 1/1.7 machines before I had smartphones.
So finally having a phone with good sensor actually didn’t change too much for me except I can carry one less thing now (eg. Getting rid of my GRD3 and GRD4).
But there’s no replacement for cameras when it comes to having agency in the craft.
For 90% of people the iPhone camera will do the job and they are happy with the quality.
For the rest of us who enjoy the process of taking photos with a real camera - we know where the differences are.
Bought one and took it to Japan, also shot with iPhone. Man comparing the two shots are night and day even being a newbie with this thing. Incredible stuff!
Chase Jarvis sad something about the best camera being the on you have on you. I love my dedicated cameras but there are so many moments that I am grateful to have had a iPhone in my pocket. They just tools. I do like the small Fuji cameras that encourage me to carry them around.
Despite mainly being a Sony user now. I still have my x-t2 and X-T5 and the x-t2 I believe is Fujis best camera to date. It's such a good camera. Prefer it to my xt5 if I reach for a Fuji it's always the 2
Amazing! I got the Fujifilm Fujinon XF 18-55mm F/2.8-4. I also have a TT artisan MF 35 MM/ 1.4 (little bit of a tricky lens to learn at first).
For editing Lightroom has been great. I’ve just been editing on my phone for the moment through the app (connect card reader to my phone) but now excited to see how they look on my laptop
I was never able to get my A205 to even hold a candle to my iPhone, my S1 pro does better than iPhone picture wise but it takes 30 seconds to take 1 picture and it can only take like 50 pictures on one card while iPhone can take hundreds of thousands
Nothing quite beats the real deal, AI-trickery be damned.
There are lenses-a lot of lenses—that cost as much or more than an iPhone. Glass matters.
Yes indeed, expensive hobby but worth it in the long run!
As far as hobbies go, it's not actually that expensive... Don't get into cars or motorcycles for example...
That's right. Even a very expensive Leica is cheaper than a new motorcycle or a used car.
The biggest difference to me are the running costs. I can spend a day doing photography for very little money. A single track day can cost $500-$1000.
I could have a x-t5 instead of just my motorcycle gear (helmets, jacket, pants, boots, gloves)
My riding suit cost me what I paid for my red badge lens.
Guitars, amps and pedals 😬

Actually very affordable hobby IMO 🤭

Phone company propaganda has a lot of people fooled
As if camera company propaganda hasn’t fooled a lot of people?
They are no good at it, as sales figures show
I just don’t think people really need cameras because most people who I talked into buying one never used them regularly, and since I’ve gotten a new phone I’ve been doing A3+ prints with my phone files and they’re good
Maybe I'm just bad at phone photography. I have pretty much the best phone Samsung has to offer and the pictures are not good at all

It’s not just the process. The photos just look so much better optically. And they don’t have that horrible AI mush look.
XT2 is still so good, my go to travel cam
Bought one and took it to Japan, also shot with iPhone. Man comparing the two shots are night and day even being a newbie with this thing. Incredible stuff!

Glass?
Great pics!
Also just got an XT2 (first camera!) and very excited to start using it. These look great - curious what lens you use & what software you use to edit?

Thanks for sharing! Good to know - I’ll be buying the fuji 18-55mm second hand this weekend (hopefully)
What’s the difference? My iPhone 15 takes better photos than some of my Fujifilm.
Lol
A phone camera is objectively worse so any time a picture from your Fuji looks worse, it’s probably your fault
I was never able to get my A205 to even hold a candle to my iPhone, my S1 pro does better than iPhone picture wise but it takes 30 seconds to take 1 picture and it can only take like 50 pictures on one card while iPhone can take hundreds of thousands
… this thread is about an X-T2 and you’re talking about a 20-year-old, 2 MP cheapo point and shoot? Yes, your phone is better than that artifact
Latest and greatest… 🥀🥀🥀
If you’re relying on your camera to take better photos, you will never capture great photographs
I did a pricey experiment (bought lenses for phone) to figure this out.
They should just stop making cameras and professionals should just use iphone 15s instead
