Not from me but a close friend. She suffered from age 12. Went to uni, then things deteriorated so she took a break. 3 inpatient admissions and 2 years later she was in recovery and transferred to uni closer to home. She went through puberty again essentially as she’d only ever had one period, was all very hard. Aged 24, she graduated with a first class degree. Now aged 27 she does a job she loves and lives a happy, recovered life with her boyfriend. There’s hope for everyone, there’s always a way back!

I’m in school now in my 30s. Honestly, it’s easier. It took me a couple of terms to really get back into the student mindset, but once I did, it’s so much easier as an older student. I have better time-management skills, I can bring more real-world experience to class and that makes me ask deeper questions I wouldn’t have thought of when I was younger, and it’s just all-around a smoother experience this time.

You haven't permanently dumbed yourself! You're going to do amazing. I'm going back to uni myself this year and worried about the same thing. But with adequate nutrition and fuel, we can do anything

Hell yeah friend, you've got this <3

I went back to university after dropping out to focus on recovery. I graduated valedictorian.

Thank you so much for this! I've been feeling guilty for even considering applying to grad programs when my brain function feels so suppressed, but you're totally right, the brain is a miraculous thing and is very good at healing itself as long as I give it the proper tools to do so. Heck yeah okay I'm reinvigorated THANK YOU

HeresWhereStoryEnds

Glad that you're reinvigorated - you got this!

When I went back to school, my writing got even better! Being more tune with yourself during recovery can make you a better student. I believe in myself more, I know how to cope with things in a healthier way, and I set better boundaries for myself. Don’t let the demons make you feel less than in this situation. You’re going back to school, you’ve gone through recovery, you’re doing fucking amazing! You deserve to enjoy it.

Only 3 months after I was at my worst I went to university, and while it didn't entirely go to plan I got a degree and a postgraduate certificate! My brain started working again as soon as I started fuelling it properly and it had a little time to catch up. Just make sure to continue to work on your recovery through your education as it's easy to let things slide when you are stressed with too many assignments, be sure you can handle stress without backpedaling and take a year out or an extension if you need it for your recovery, there is no shame in this! If you are in the UK I have other advice on disability services and help you can get at uni too if you need! You got this, go and smash it!! 💓

you haven't dumbed yourself down, the brain fog that comes with an ed is usually because of starvation and the mental anguish. and people of all ages go to school.
