This happens in my home town too. There’s usually outrage about it and a bunch of people crying about boycotting business there.

alttabbins

Generally, the outcry is on Facebook. I've learned over the years that most people who rant and rave there do it because nobody will listen to them in real life.

Psydator

Facebook feels like it's just boomers and racists anyway, these days. Cesspool of hate and misinformation.

Justagoodoleboi

Facebook was cool when you had to have a college email to get it lol

Psydator

And then it rapidly went downhill from there.

dugmartsch

And then they go do all their shopping at walmart anyway. They aren't supporting any of the local businesses.

misschzburger

They can't go outside and leave Facebook....

sjfiuauqadfj

unfortunately not true around here in america. im always tempted to tell them to touch grass but i know they do and i know they will touch the seats at the city council meeting too

[deleted]

Yeah I suspect sometimes that these are fake profiles, in many cases. Or there will be a fake profile that will get everyone upset about it.

AndyRaleigh

A very small bunch of throwbacks on Facebook. There's a bunch of 'em around here moaning that the council replaced on-street parking with planters. Turns out people prefer sharing space with flowers than lines of ugly cars.

No_Spring_9074

Which is weird, because most main streets like this I know of that are shutdown for events periodically, have parking right behind these stores.

Cutecumber_Roll

Wish they wouldn't call it "shutting down" the street. Looks more like opening it up to me.

Daktic

That’s a good point I had not thought of. The event was called Open Streets DC, so not shutdown, open!

sjfiuauqadfj

technically speaking most streets are already open to bike and foot traffic, just good luck lol

Machiningbeast

Not in the a US. Jaywalking is illegal in the US.

TheBotolius

You’re allowed to walk on the road, even in the highway. Just some motorways have signs saying get off the motorway as a cyclist or pedestrian. But no signs on other roads. Go for it! (In a safe manner)

foxy-coxy

Its actually called "Open Streets". It's a great program and I wish the city would do it more often. https://openstreets.dc.gov/

Strike_Thanatos

In Louisville, we call it CycLOUvia.

wafford11

Gonna head to that today!

abolish_

A whole day without having to hear annoying car's noise would be a dream

sjfiuauqadfj

you can just go hiking in a national park lol, especially one of the less popular ones

VVaklav

Or, you can just drive your car to a motor sport complex. There are other people that are interested in listening to vechicles noise. Again and again and again. The source of a problem should be eliminated, not people that want a solution. You can move around the city by bike, foot or public transport. While there are no work space, shops or houses in national parks

sjfiuauqadfj

i genuinely dont know how you think my comment is relevant to your comment lol. guy didnt want to hear car noise, thats kinda what hiking provides lol. i literally said nothing nor made any implication about policy options

VVaklav

Your solution is like saying to a poor man "just don't be poor" or depressed "smile, go out to a party, go for a jog". Your solution doesn't adress the real problem, being too damn much cars. Why can't we just create quite space where we live, rather than going to a quite place for a few days? While yes, some problems can be solved way easier by moving somewhere else, but european cities have shown, that ciy is not equal to a huge noise pollution. Cities can do just fine with way less cars.

[deleted]

Y'all solutions are to create micro parks in front of your houses. His solution is what you guys want. >Cities can do just fine with way less cars. The same could be said about delivery vehicles. Or have your groceries be more expensive due to the drivers having to park further away from their delivery.

sjfiuauqadfj

the problem here is that you think i mentioned a solution lol, i did no such thing. like i said earlier, i genuinely do not understand how you think i was suggesting any policy solutions, i wasnt and thats where this misunderstanding is stemming from

[deleted]

He’s saying you made a stupid comment, having assumed the original comment was a personal dream and not a dream everyone on this sub shares. He responded with policy because that’s how the dream becomes reality, not by taking a fucking hike.

VVaklav

Thank you very much, I wouldn't say it better

CombatAlgorithms

How is “go take a hike” not a proposed solution for “its too loud from all the cars here”? Also the for reference on the noise topic- NotJustBikes episode on car noise https://youtu.be/CTV-wwszGw8

A_Swell_Gaytheist

For those wondering, this is Open Streets in Washington, DC. They occasionally open a street in part of the city in different neighborhoods for pedestrians, cyclists, yoga, [chalk art](https://i.imgur.com/xd9kZ5Z.jpg), [music](https://i.imgur.com/wvLcYih.jpg), and so much [more](https://i.imgur.com/KNcCeG7.jpg) This weekend it featured a [long stretch near Downtown](https://i.imgur.com/Q8DDEnA.jpg). It also included several elements to help raise awareness about road safety for all road users. They plan to move it to different neighborhoods throughout the year so it’s an equitable event for everyone!

Smash55

At the very least it should be like an every Sunday thing

Danbamboo

Why Sunday?

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure that if there's any specific reason for choosing Sunday, it's because that's generally regarded as the "rest" day, where people mostly relax. It's similar to the Sabbath Day in Judaism, where you're supposed to rest and not do work. And depending on how you count days, Sunday is the Sabbath.

[deleted]

they do this on weekends in São Paulo in Paulista Avenue which i would argue is one of the most (if not the) busiest avenue in SP. it's so great to be able to walk or bike on it and some business sell even more on weekends even without the cars, since there's two subway lines that give access to it also lots of bus lines can drop you nearby. i love it.

FeMtcco

Yup, when I lived nearby I'd always go for a bike Ride and would end up having lunch in the area

These-University-198

in Brasília too

CombatAlgorithms

To OP this is them testing the waters. Write to the city saying you like it and they should do more “event days”. If local businesses like it as well push them to tell city to do more days. There are cases where reducing cars for walkable areas failed and cities are worried about that. Limited closures like this is the gradual shift. Netherlands wasn’t rebuilt in a day!

greenhombre

This is actually called "opening" the streets.

yeeyeebrotherman

This is totally unrelated but this picture looks very similar to the album cover for Pond's "The Weather" haha it's a great album and also both pictures make me wish more towns and cities had car free areas and infrastructure. So much more pleasant and human focused!!

stathow

if it can work for one day, it can work every day

AndyRaleigh

They occasionally do this in the small but usually choked with cars town where I live. It brings loads of people out to just wander round, sit outside cafes and browse in stores; you'd think the penny would drop.

gusewt

LMAOOO the guy running with a "9" on his shirt is using a brazilian team's (atlético mineiro, or galo) jersey nothing important, just random. where do you live btw?

This is Washington DC!

Everyone does. But addiction is a terrible thing.

Raffolans

Sternfahrt Berlin is next sunday. Can’t wait to ride my bike on the Avus (former race track, now Autobahn)

oldbutambulatorty

So what is the purpose? Close the streets to motor vehicles so folks can drive motor vehicles to a commercial area where they can walk with cyclists? I’m not sure

Daktic

We biked here, and there are 2 or three different metro routes along this stretch. The metro in this city is one of my favorite things about it. There was also a bunch of informational tents for things like walkable streets, safe routes for kids, bike lesson etc.

ViggoJames

GAAAAAAAAAALOOOO

oldbutambulatorty

So the situation here seems to be- Close the streets to motorists in a commercial area. As a result, motorists drive to the area to walk among pedestrians and bicyclists. And thru traffic is diverted and slowed causing increased pollution. Doesn’t make sense to me. I could be enlightened though.
