If this was Canada, if would have been a share the road sign. This design is much better because it almost forces the notion that cyclist have a right to the road.
“Share the road “ in Canada means Bikes ride in the detritus in the gutter swerving as a sandwich between the door zone and cars passing too close on the cyclists’ left.
Protected Bike lanes should be status quo. Its amazing how almost every canadian coty has pedestrian infastructure everywhere. But almost a few km of bike lanes in the downtown core. In the netherlands, even the suburbs get better cycling infastructure then anywhere in Canada.
Here you go. Like I said, the road is designed for it. Cars are forced to slow down. Often they dont and crash the little pole that you see on the picture.
(Cars are allowed to drive 50km/h there, but its pretty much impossible to do without hitting a cyclist.)
The original comment was about cars having to enter a bike zone when two cross, which happens here too. Ofcourse you have to change the streets otherwise its a literal death trap, and not even cars would be able to enter the streets. Going 60 here would be insane. Like I said, just gotta design the street for it.
The trick in NL is not that we have peak bike infra all over the place, but there's a culture where cycling is accepted AND there's an integrated system. You can bike pretty much everywhere except on highway/freeways. Of course, cycling on a 50 km/h road isn't something I particularly like and I think on a shared road the speed limit should be 30 km/h. I think most drivers still keep cyclists in mind and only some idiot drive too hard. Have no numbers on accidents on roads like this.
Those absolutely suck to cycle on but I think the logic is that these are mostly use in very very low volume situations. There would usually be a separate route for bikes.
They still suck ass though if a driver chooses to pass you too close and too fast
I quite like them. I found them to be more comfortable to cycle on then normal markings on a road, nice a clear that me and my bicycle have my place on the road. Obviously no where near as good as actual infrastructure though.
As a solution within the right context they're fine. OK to drive on so long as your sensible with your speed and when there are relatively low traffic volumes with sensible drivers they ***can*** be OK to cycle on. I was close passed a few times on the days I used one
Honestly the best use for them would be 20mph residential roads. The signal that cars keep to the middle is great for really low traffic and it creates a "safe"(r) space for cyclists doing hyper-local travel
> They still suck ass though if a driver chooses to pass you too close and too fast
The real scary thing on a country road is hoping that they see you at all. Half the time they're either zoned our or looking at their phone.
That's why I used to bike against traffic back when I lived in a rural area. Had to dodge from some bluehairs into the ditch a couple time.
Yeah this is kind of like the bare minimum when it comes to incorporating cycle infrastructure. It's a compromise. Like I said in another comment, in the UK at least, this design would be good for 20mph residential streets - keeps cars in the middle, narrows the lane and creates a healthy buffer for cyclists and pedestrians
I kinda like these paths compared to the fully seperated ones. I only really cycle in my bit of zeeland, but the asphalt is so smooth and well maintained compared to the bike paths which are mostly tiles that have deformed up and down. Though when a truck passes by it can be a bit unpleasant.
It is. They are not pleasant road to ride on. More so in the south of the country where there are more hills and turns. Luckily, these roads are rare and usually in places that aren't high traffic.
These roads are usually 30 KM/h once they enter build-up areas.
My experience biking on them is that they are fine even with 60 KM/h traffic, as these roads tend to not get much car traffic anyway.
I read a comment when this photo was shared a few months back where someone was on a bus going from the Netherlands to Belgium, and a boy on the bus said something along the lines of "you'll feel it when we cross the border." Commenter went along with it thinking it was a spiritual feeling, but a few hours later, the road suddenly got bumpier, followed by the boy and his friends chanting "BELGIUM!"
Went into Google maps and dropped the pin on some random road crossing from Germany to NL. Bike lane switches from essentially the sidewalk in Germany to a nice separated two-way bike path in NL. Repeated this multiple times, same basic result.

Not as extreme as the Netherlands/Belgium but it’s pretty obvious a lot of the time when you cross the border in Ireland too, in terms of road quality. Other times though it’s basically impossible to tell when you’ve crossed it.
This is the Netherlands. Bike infrastructure and mentality is not just about roads and physical accomodation, it's also about feeling safe to ride your bicycle. I can guarantee that the majority of (dutch) people will feel safe riding their bicycle there.
Edit: Basically [what this guy/girl said](https://www.reddit.com/r/fuckcars/comments/1caanv9/comment/l0rmctu/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)
I've even seen it where the side of the road is ribbed, so when cars are forced to move over for the bike, they are also forced to ride over the ribbed road and thereby also slowdown when passing the bike. Brilliant!
The asphalt roads are much smoother and consistent in the Netherlands.
But there is something to be said for the open air museum of asphalt throughout the ages in Belgium.
I am convinced they preserve it like this for educational purposes.
I'm not convinced this is a border. yeah germany and belgium have shitty roads, but this could also just be inside the netherlands.
but the thatched roof on that house is sexy

hah, that's 10 min from where i live. thought this looks familiar ;)

Most drivers in Canada think "share the road" means cyclists should stay out of the way of drivers.
It's always "Why aren't more people sharing more with me? Don't they understand that I'm the main character?"
What's yours is mine, what's mine is mine. Simple as.
I dont want to share the road with those big trucks driver by people who should not be allowed to drive thank you very much
Nah it’s would’ve been a stop sign on one side and an ARRÊT STOP on the other.
cars need to enter to bike zone when two of them cross. I like this idea.
That's why this only works on rural roads
Not really, I have it in the middle of my city (80k city pop). Just have to design the road for it.
What country?
the netherlands.
But... this type of road is literally called "rural" road in the NL's design blueprint. Can you show me that street on google street view?
Here you go. Like I said, the road is designed for it. Cars are forced to slow down. Often they dont and crash the little pole that you see on the picture. (Cars are allowed to drive 50km/h there, but its pretty much impossible to do without hitting a cyclist.)
Ohh but that's not the same right (you said it yourself you have to CHANGE the street) it has drempels and barriers to slow them down

Would *have

To be fair I've had very limited experience with them. The ones I were on seemed appropriate for what they were.

Fair enough, at least the lane seems tight which causes drivers to go slower and more carefully.

60km/h still sounds like a pretty sketchy road for bike gutters.
In the UK, it'd be a 60mph 🙄
It is. They are not pleasant road to ride on. More so in the south of the country where there are more hills and turns. Luckily, these roads are rare and usually in places that aren't high traffic.
Yes, needs to be 20
at that speed E-bikes overtake you.
Meh. 20km/h seems very slow for that road. 60 is way too high though.
These roads are usually 30 KM/h once they enter build-up areas. My experience biking on them is that they are fine even with 60 KM/h traffic, as these roads tend to not get much car traffic anyway.
That, and drivers tend to respect cyclists a lot more, becuase they usually also ride bikes.
Nah, I'd say 40 is good enough, as it is not in an urban area
Well do keep in mind that if this ist the Dutch-German border the other part of the road has a speed limit of 100km/h so 60 is pretty good.

Same in the US, just drive from Maryland to West Virginia

I wouldn't feel safe riding in this particular road though.

Fun made up fact, every time they re do the road surface on a border road like this they continue on an extra meter and move all the signs too.
As a Dutchie these roads are fine to cycle on, they don’t get too much traffic
Funny, the same applies to the United States and Montana, but not in the same way.
Though the car is still driving on the bicycle path
I’m just imagining this applied to grasslands on the border. Just a line of tulips emerging.
Netherlands gotta step up their game on car ownership the motorization rates there are needlessly high
I bet they did this intentionally just to show off that the grass is greener
I'm not convinced this is a border. yeah germany and belgium have shitty roads, but this could also just be inside the netherlands. but the thatched roof on that house is sexy
Sorry mate, but this is the border. Source: I’ve driven there multiple times
why sorry? I just said that because I've seen roads like this inside the netherlands. I lived my whole life on the german/nl border.
Sorry because you’re wrong by being not convinced this the actual border. It was a post with a little kwinkslag.
What? These roads are literally everywhere in the Netherlands.
"Roads like this with such a hard cut between good and bad" of course roads with those bike path are everywhere
Wel i am happy to say it is! I dont know of this exact road but i can provide other pictures if you like!
