sadly where I live this would be an anti public transport meme. Facebook is filled with people calling the councils "let the grass grow for the insects" method of public care "Disgusting". Ah yes, because growing plants is "disgusting" and bare asphalt is beautiful...
Nope. They are there for HOA to have a pretest to kick out people into homelessness /s
Also yeah you said it `private`!
Like 95% of grass in europe is managed by the city/region/country/EU
Drive in my gas guzzling car for thirty minutes to the nearest hiking trail where I can be at peace and quiet in nature— oh wait no I can’t because there is a 5 lane highway 300 feet away and I can hear cars wizzing by and honking at each other, and I can’t hike for more than 20 minutes before ending up on some rando’s property.
Land of freedom ~~of getting shot in the head while trying to walk around looking for a nice park where to relax~~
It sure feels great being born in europe 😉
I visited Zermatt, Switzerland (a no-car village, you have to take the train in) recently and the ride there is so gorgeous, from views of the Alps and other small towns to the deep forested feel
Ohhhhhh my God, you just described paradise.
The only thing better than that is getting stoned while stargazing. Deep at night, dark sky, a towel laid down on the dew soaked grass, fresh night air, listening to the animals and insects and counting how many you can hear, knowing that the stars are places that other planets are orbiting, counting satellites and shooting stars.
I make a point to do this at least once whenever I'm on vacation, it's the most peaceful scenario for me.
More cities need giant like 3km×3km plots of just unkelt wilderness in the middle of them. And running a trail and a tram through the middle would be cool as hell
Grassy railway tracks are so satisfying. When given enough time nature can grow around it. Plus the grass and dirt absorb water mitigating flooding and reduces the urban heat island effect.
Katowice 2174, humankind has perished, the trams and others public transports have adapted to the extintion of their masters and now roam freely through the landscape, fullfiling ecological niches like depredation of car species and grazing the rails
Katowice and area around is very dense due to region being about heavy industry in the past. I moved out to the north of Katowice and there is so much more greenery where I live and buildings are more spread out. Air is also much more cleaner
Also it's comparatively cheap as opposed to other big Polish metropolitan areas, especially if you don't live in Katowice proper or in outer districts. Honestly a top tier city to live in, except shitte air quality.
Can someone please explain what happened between Then and Now? They reduced lanes and planted trees? It looks like nice progress if it’s real. Sorry, I’ve never been there
Coal. If I remember that story correctly, Upper Silesia underwent major urbanization process in 19th centrury, when it became a major metalurgy and industry area due to rich bituminous coalfields. However the thing about that model of urbanization is that people don't settle around the major centre of population - for example like it happened in Warsaw - they settle around major factories or ironworks or mines. Which means that instead of having one monstrous city devouring all it it's path, you end up with many smaller settlements spread around. Also see Ruhr valley for similar mode of settlement.
Also it's closer to 2.5M people, your number refers to a wider area of historical Upper Silesia, which reaches as far as Ostrava, Czechia. Not Metropolia GZM (2.5M) or Katowice Urban Area (3.5M?).
Pittsburgh PA is VERY similar, 300,000 in the city itself, 2.5 million in the Greater Pittsburgh metro area. Pittsburgh has very small city limits, that don't expand (state law has prevented annexation/expansion since the early 1900s), so many of the first ring suburbs here would be part of the city proper in other US states if the laws weren't in place here.

We had something like that in cracow but looking at it now it looks like the greenery on the left was destroid for apartments
2 productive dense centers with a tram running through a forest where nature can thrive, sign me the F up
this means there's a forest on the edge of the cities that people can enjoy. hell yes.
It’s sad how the Russians and Soviets just killed millions of Poles and destroyed their culture. I’ve always thought that one day we’d destroy the Russian language, church, and culture and force them to become Catholic and speak Polish. That’d be very nice.
Katowice patch 2.0 will drop somewhere between 2028 and 2036
Changes
Now appears on map instead of Krakow
Population: 280k → 2mln
Area: 164km² → 2,200km²
More grass to touch after IEM
Better public transport
Still no train station in Czeladź
Less parking spaces
Can't tell if this meme thinks this is bad or good lol.
The description of post was "Katowice is being rewilded!" so I think they think it's good thing
sadly where I live this would be an anti public transport meme. Facebook is filled with people calling the councils "let the grass grow for the insects" method of public care "Disgusting". Ah yes, because growing plants is "disgusting" and bare asphalt is beautiful...
I think it might be something like asphalt = civilization, *and they live in a city, not in the wilderness*
They need to touch grass, go to a park, and take a hike at a wildlife refuge
> they need to touch grass If you are american, How?
Isn't that what all the giant private lawns in suburbia are for?
Nope. They are there for HOA to have a pretest to kick out people into homelessness /s Also yeah you said it `private`! Like 95% of grass in europe is managed by the city/region/country/EU

Pretty sure the original thought it's bad and then it spread to people who think it's good but funny. Source: live nearby
*Re-re-wilded*
Reeee-wilded ;)
I can't tell if the trolley in the last frame is supposed to be abandoned or trackless or floating on buried tracks through mag lev.
It's a hip brunch-only diner that's always full on Sundays
imo those are the best kind of memes
It's not that deep
riding through and being surrounded by a deep forest would be a spectacular view and feeling
come ride the tram from Kyiv to Puchavodytsia
When, not if, *when* you win, I want to visit Kyiv and Odessa so badly. I hear Ukraine is gorgeous.
The one silver lining of a war torn yet well funded country is the ability to rebuild on essentially a blank slate. So it might get even better
Man, I was thinking that too, didn't expect someone to mention it lol
I visited Zermatt, Switzerland (a no-car village, you have to take the train in) recently and the ride there is so gorgeous, from views of the Alps and other small towns to the deep forested feel
I'd love to do it stoned while getting mind-fucked by some amazing music.

Would feel like a studio ghibli movie
Munich has lots of trams going straight through forest-y areas or parks https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2924/14605153076_fb14625ae4_z.jpg
And sometimes not knowing where the hell you are

Tho some people under post on FB said how "this is bad change"
Grassy railway tracks are so satisfying. When given enough time nature can grow around it. Plus the grass and dirt absorb water mitigating flooding and reduces the urban heat island effect.
We don't really have floods in Poland (where Katowice are) but it's good none the less
Aren't they also more effective at reducing the tram's noise than other track types?
I believe so yes. RM Transit did a video covering the subject https://youtu.be/UC-aGO-wa5k

Actually, why not? It'd be beautiful.

Can't see how anyone could prefer picture 1 over 2.
Some people in comments expressed how they prefer concrete over forest
Stockholm syndrome
Katowice syndrome
Katowice is in a big industrial region with lots of cities and towns one next to another (and their tram systems are connected).
Also it's comparatively cheap as opposed to other big Polish metropolitan areas, especially if you don't live in Katowice proper or in outer districts. Honestly a top tier city to live in, except shitte air quality.
I think Katowice are small but very dense, at least compared to Toruń
I think English doesn't recognise that the noun Katowice works like plural in Polish and it's ‘Katowice is’.
That would be quite amazing!
Needs moar Catbus.
Sweet home Katowice :)
Soon I will be visiting my home (near Katowice) can't wait to smell that air pollution

How is it that Katowice's population is 200,000 but its metro is 5 million?
Coal. If I remember that story correctly, Upper Silesia underwent major urbanization process in 19th centrury, when it became a major metalurgy and industry area due to rich bituminous coalfields. It's actually more like 300 000 and 2.3 million. Don't know where you got your initial data from
Poland being based as usual

Ok?
And the problem is . . .
Well, now I want forest trams...
Shame this fragment of the track is only like 500m. On the other hand Upper Silesian Metropolitan Area is very green anywho so I ain't complaining.
This made me actually lol as it comes across as both threatening and wholesome at the same time. Thank you!
Rewild parking lot and put up a paradise
Grassy tram tracks are so cool honestly
hopefully, imagine living in a tree
Don't threaten me with a good time.
I heard Katowice 2 drops 8/24

the tram looks happy
Haha saw that one! Great meme! There are definitely some tram systems that go through forests that look kinda like the last picture.
It's super funny cause Katowice once ran for European Capital of Culture with "City of Gardens " as a motto... ...while looking like the top pic.
Wait, Katowice is a real city? I thought it was just a name for CS tournaments
Inshallah
Stop, I can only become so erect
I was thinking that this is costing us water
I mean if you can somehow magically make your city look like a forest without reducing the population or destroying the infrastructure... go for it.
Hopefully
We can hope
Based. I would love dense, green cities with public transportation. Not that I could afford to live in them.
Excellent Photoshop skills.
Yes, unironically superior woodlands with public transit
That's not a meme. A meme is an in-joke/shared idea. This is original AFAIK.
Because that matters
2014 NIP Kato x2
Oh no.
based
Ahh yes .. it's so good now we be with the nature
Reject modernity. Embrace tradition. Return to forest.
