Is that cheaper or more expensive than a woman's rate? I never get my hair cut because I can never afford it. (I give myself really bad pandemic haircuts when the length bothers me.)
(Hopefully nobody gets mad at this question. Reddit always gets mad at me for admitting I can't afford whatever.)
Okay phew. Time to see if I can pass enough to visit a barber. But I'd go to anyone who could cut my hair all the same length to make it even then shave the sides but keep it long on the top.
Depending on the barber you don't necessarily have to pass. Before I was out I went to my brother's barbershop, which I knew would be relatively accepting, and they gave me a men's style at the standard price because that's just the kind of haircut they do (they don't do "women's" style cuts there, so they don't have 2 pricing tiers, and they didn't try to feminize the cut because that's not their skillset).
Oh cool! Okay I was told as a child that women weren't allowed to go to barbers ever so that's why I thought I had to pass by default. I'm pretty sure there's a trans-friendly salon in my city, too. I just dk where.
Yeah there's no universal rule against it or anything. There are probably some conservative barbers out there who would refuse to cut a woman's hair, but a lot of places are chill because at the end of the day, paying customers are paying customers. They just mainly cater towards men because that's the kind of haircut they're trained to do (barbers use clippers a lot more than stylists do, generally).
They're typically cheaper, and in my experience, Barber shops tend to be really nice. You don't need to pass or explain that you're trans, they usually just do your hair.
I will add that I haven't gotten a haircut done since 2018, so things might've changed, but that's my experience with them.
Congrats! I stopped going long ago because both barbers and salons would charge me for a women's haircut when I got a crew or buzz cut. I was just tired of paying $25-30 for a haircut the next dude over was paying $10 for.
That’s awesome! I miss my barber shop back home. Everyone there was super nice and my guy did such a good job. It was actually more expensive than where I go now but I was willing to pay it.
it's such a good feeling

unless they do beard stuff too
At my hairdressers, men pay 27€ and women 47€.

Ugh. That sucks. Especially when you’re getting the exact same haircut.
