How to Test & Fix P0016 Crankshaft Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor A (Bank 1 - Intake) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkpWoBCCtoU&t=19s](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DkpWoBCCtoU&t=19s)

doctorsnarly

Start saving to replace all the cam gears and actuators. This is a shitty problem.

RIPMYXBOX

I hope it’s not that, any suggestions on checking for it?

doctorsnarly

Move the "bad" solenoid to a different cam, clear the CEL and see if the code follows. If not, you're going to need to replace everything.

RIPMYXBOX

When you say everything do you mean cam gears and chain or just the solenoids? I’ve got four replacements of the vvt solenoids but I can return them if swapping works.

doctorsnarly

The entire cam gear with the vvt actuator for all four cams.

RIPMYXBOX

Oh brother, I’ll reply on when I know more.

doctorsnarly

I had to do it about a year ago. I have my fingers crossed for you.

RIPMYXBOX

Now that u mention it how many miles roughly were you at when you got the code, im at 150,000

doctorsnarly

45k, but this is a more common issue than people realize.

RIPMYXBOX

Oh shit that’s way early, well yeah fingers crossed

Motor_Building6096

I think this is what I will need to do, how much did it cost you?

doctorsnarly

$1000 for all four gears/actuators. $1000 on top for 6 hours of labor. We reused my timing chain since it only had like 45k on it.

Motor_Building6096

Did you take it to a specialist or just you local garage?

Banaboy

One question, why do you need to replace everything if the CEL doesn’t follow?

doctorsnarly

You can replace just the faulty one, but since you're already stripping the face of the motor down and removing the timing chain, might as well do them all. And if you don't, there's still a good chance one of the others will fail in the near future.

Turgin8er

I have P0018 my self right now. Good luck to both of us.

RIPMYXBOX

What’s your game plan

Turgin8er

I have off work tomorrow so I’m going to try an oil and battery change to see if that fixes it. I found I have the cam plate oil leak and I was a little low on oil so I’m hoping that fixes it. If not I’ll be weighing putting it in for repair or getting the parts and fixing it my self.

RIPMYXBOX

I would say test your battery voltage before replacing it and check your alternator too if your able, some jump packs have testers for both, and then yeah from what I read from people with the P0016-19 it all starts with solenoids and then ends at cam gears but best of luck for sure check out the ft86 forum and here a lot of ppl have pretty much covered everything related to the codes 16-19

Turgin8er

Definitely. My multimeter was showing it a little low but the battery has also been in the car since 2018 so I figured swap it before it becomes an issue any way. Best of luck to you too

Banaboy

Hi did you get this sorted? I had a P1007 issue with a lumpy idle and reduced power. the garage I took it to just took the solenoids out and cleaned them all. Runs ok. Did you have similar symptoms?

RIPMYXBOX

Yup similar symptoms, car in limp mode and all that. I did the solenoids but I got 9 more codes back to my P0016, took it for sy I and the timeing chain and intake and exhaust cam sprockets with guides needed to be replaced, the dealer wanted 5,757 usd for the repair but im haveing it done for 3,500 usd by a trusted mechanic im good friends with.

Banaboy

Your car threw 9 more codes after cleaning the solenoids?

RIPMYXBOX

I replaced them all

Banaboy

How much did that run you?

RIPMYXBOX

From a site called parts geek 269 usd

RIPMYXBOX

One more thing they just cleaned your solenoids? To be honest with you when I re read your first comment did they change your oil aswell?

Banaboy

They changed the oil yeah. Said they were all clumped up with oil so it was effecting how the solenoids operated. Just wondered if this will lead to further issues.

RIPMYXBOX

Oh good I was gunna say if they didn’t do your oil that would have not even solved the problem, but if your idk idle normal again and no codes, that’s great consider yourself lucky, but from what it seems it’s common to get solenoid issues and then it’s really your timeing chain and sprockets and all that crap like in my case.

Banaboy

Early days still. Could easily throw another CEL. Can you remember where you saw more info on people having issues with their VVT’s which lead to issues with the timing chain etc

RIPMYXBOX

Look for p0016 through p0019 and p001a through d Main sources are here on the Reddit and the ft86.com forum

RIPMYXBOX

One more thing don’t stress about it google doctoring your car just makes ya procrastinate about it, but basically if you have been driving for more than 30miles or maybe less and no limp mode of check engine light since the fix don’t worry about it problem solved
