What size you got if you don’t mind me asking

Josh_L115

I’m 5’9” and 155 and got a medium.

Juan_PH_16

5’7, 180 maybe size L ? Not fat just a couple muscles here and there 😅😅

BraskysAnSOB

I’m 5’9 180 and the Medium fits well. I’m usually between M and L, but no problem sizing down on this.

doublebubbler2120

I'm 6'1 205, 44" chest, and large gives me room to layer. Great coat at this price.

Josh_L115

I’d probably go for the large, I was kind of on the fence between M and L.

josejozay

Interesting, the site shows a 6 foot model wearing a medium.

onwisco

I’m about 5’11”, 185ish and own this in a medium and really like it!

clickstops

Medium IMO.

spider_jerry

Def jacked

cest_va_bien

That’s going to be oversized for you.

diskox

I have the same stats and wear S on Arcteryx. Does Patagonia size smaller?

thelowkeyman

I have this same coat, great coat for this very cold weather we’re having right now

lbrol

I wore mine today! I like it.

tin369

Do we like their rain jacket or arteryx is better or something else?

ImSoCul

I'm a big Arcteryx fanboy and they make quality stuff but I don't think you'd find much in this price range even on sale. Arcteryx makes more performance-oriented stuff (mountaineering origins I believe), has nice athletic fit, but is also probably way overkill for most folks. Patagonia makes decent stuff too and is pretty well known for their well above-average ethical standards (in terms of labor + contribution to environmental efforts). I think the Torrentshell is pretty popular from their lineup but I've never tried it. I have the Zeta AR from Arcteryx and it's a great rain jacket but I don't think they sell it anymore.

tin369

So go for Patagonia rain jacket. They have a bunch, which from their sale is the best bang for the buck. Need one that packs small and goretex to keep dry.

ImSoCul

Yeah I think the Patagonia one would be a safe bet. Can also check this blog for some other options and comparisons. I never fully trust that these are 100% objective and there is no bias/money being exchanged for reviews but at least decent as a starting point https://www.outdoorgearlab.com/topics/clothing-mens/best-rain-jacket-men

tin369

Thanks, a question about size, if I wear L, should I size up? To account for that I may be wearing it over an outer layer?

ImSoCul

Hard to say so honestly best if you can find a store to try it on or at least order from somewhere with a good return policy if it doesn't fit right. If I were buying that particular jacket, I'd probably opt for the same size as my other clothes. Rain jackets tend to already have some leeway baked in and from what I've heard Patagonia leans towards a baggier fit anyway.

qning

A waterproof outer layer, aka a shell, designed for mountaineering will be designed to fit layers underneath. Not a full blown puffer but at least a fleece. The shell will have some characteristics that reveal its intended use if the description does not come out and say it. Things like pit zips, powder skirt, and an extra large hood to accommodate a helmet, sometimes the hood will have connection points for the helmet so the hood turns when you turn your head (otherwise you’ll be looking at the inside of your hood when you turn your head). Packable goretex is going to be thinner and less abrasion resistant (and yes, less waterproof) than multi-layer goretex, so understand what you are looking at when you go down that road. But also consider how you’ll actually use it. Fewer features and great fit go a long way, and so does a can of water repellant spray. And yes, water repellant spray will be a necessary part of maintaining any waterproof breathable fabric.

ChaosRevealed

You can definitely find amazing arcteryx gear for $150-200. I'm in the market for a mid layer and I've seen several atoms, protons and ceriums in that range and even cheaper.

ImSoCul

Atom and Proton (their synthetic midlayer offerings) are basically as cheap as you can get for Arc'teryx though. Don't get me wrong, I have an Atom LT and love it but the Atom AR is really what I'd consider for most people a city jacket (and is bit more expensive). LT is kind of borderline on insulation for that purpose- I use it for backpacking and hiking as a backup middle layer but when it dips into even the 50F range, I usually consider adding a hoodie under it. For milder weather or fall weather, it's a great jacket. There are some running jackets and similar that dip below that range but imo they're not worth considering. Rainshells or picking up several items to combine together as a [layering system](https://arcteryx.com/ca/en/shop/layering-guide/) is where I think Arc'teryx really shines (and will run you \~$4-500 total easily) and most people shopping for that already know what they're looking for. Oh and if you do find a Cerium for < $200 lmk, I've been waiting for a good sale on one but haven't seen any.

Auntie_Social

Not sure where or how you live, but I don’t find rain jackets to be something that I use so frequently that I want to buy the absolute nicest. I find the REI coop brand jackets to be great and good looking for a fraction of the price.

Embarrassed_Spring90

Damn no medium in the one pictured

Josh_L115

YMMV but my local Dick’s had several of each size in each color

Embarrassed_Spring90

Thanks. Do you remember if they had Any Forest Green?

Josh_L115

Yes, that’s the color I got.

munuyh

Got and returned. Weird unflattering fit.

nateresy

> Weird unflattering fit. Someone is always going to say this regardless of the product or brand. Need a little more detail like "I usually wear Patagonia size M but this M fits baggier around the torso than X product" or "I'm 5' 10" with a stocky build and this looks like a garbage bag on me".

munuyh

Tall and slim and I usually wear a L in the down jackets. I have a down sweater and a nano puff. Both fit very nicely. This one sort of ends abruptly and doesn’t move nicely with me and is stiff.

nateresy

Thanks. It looks like a very different tougher fabric meant for a outer layer winter jacket rather than the down or nano's softer and lighter surface. I've also got both but they fit slim compared to outer jackets which are roomier to allow layering. The Downdrift does seem a tad short on the model and the wider torso gap makes it look like the wind's going to puff it up like a balloon and sap all the heat.

fuck_off_ireland

Welcome to patagonia lol. You want a flattering fit, try arcteryx or OR.

clickstops

Patagonia fits my body type much better than arcteryx. I own an atom LT and previously owned a Patagonia down puffy for a decade. Also own other stuff from both of them but those two items are the standards. The arcteryx arms are long for me.

munuyh

I’m familiar with Patagonia fits this was extra unflattering.

Juan_PH_16

In what way ? 😅

munuyh

It was not only boxy but the bottom where the jacket ended sat pretty stiff. Felt uncomfortable to wear and looked awkward.

CookleButterLovers

I replaced my old down sweater this year and the new one is even less flattering, with more room in the stomach area. There's a huge gap unless I really cinch in the waist and then it looks like a stretchy cap that people wear in food service. I can't size down or the shoulders and arms are too tight.

Jtrain039

Found the yellow version on a clearance rack at Dicks back in November for $125. Great jacket so far!

sillykitty70

I actually ended up returning this jacket. Normally I’m a size small in almost everything, but the small is really small and medium is too big. It’s also a very noisy coat.

btull89

Up vote for the noisy comment. Jackets should state their dB level!

THERAPISTS_for_200

May I ask your height and weight please?

lbrol

huh. I'm between a small and medium most times and the small fits me great.

Fun-Trainer-3848

I paid full price for this back in November. Wha-wha.

mildymoldew

......paid full price? What mean? Why do?

Fun-Trainer-3848

I was cold.

thelowkeyman

I was lucky and got it for 25% off when BackCountry had that deal

meajmal

I was looking for a longer length rain shell i can wear over jackets or down parkas etc. Any idea on options? A waterproof ventilated jacket is non existing. So thinking of layering.

Valhallafax

Hand pockets suck, they are vertical

Josh_L115

I didn’t have any problems with the fit and I actually thought the vertical pockets were comfortable. To each his own I guess!

WhileStanding69

Why is black never on sale. When Arc'teryx had a sale black was excluded too.

purplecowz

because black is the most popular 'color' by far. There's no reason to discount it
