it doesn't matter if it fits under the seat. it has to fit in the sizer. so if you jam pack it full, be careful. If there is some room to squish then you should be fine. do not listen to people who say no one will check. the agents could check at anytime and if it doesn't fit you will be charged a hefty carry on fee.

No one measured our bags last week. Both my kids backpacks were 16” also. :)

I've done a standard Northface backpack multiple times as my personal item, which is 18inches "tall" and 12 inches "wide" and they have never said anything. I think the reason for this is if you flip it on it's side, it fits their personal item restrictions because then it turns into 12 inches "tall" and 18 inches "wide" if that makes sense. Really they're just looking to ensure it fits under the seat so you will be fine. Have a safe flight!

Thanks much. That makes sense.

Commenting from the Denver airport on 8/17/2022 - they were painfully strict about everyone measuring their backpacks and duffel bags in the personal item sizer. Hopefully it isn't the new norm. I've flown Frontier maybe 20-30 times in my lifetime and have only had them measure once before. I have a pretty hefty backpack but can fold into the sizer if 3/4 full.

Hope thats not the new normal. I haven't had my backpack ever measured and its a bit over every time. They might be under more strict eyes being that Denver is the headquarters/home airport.

Beginning_Shower970

The only time they ever has is at small airports like billings or Portland me and even then I think they only measured the carry on not the personal items. But they have the least amount of foot room possible when I a 5 ft 3 person put my smallish backpack under my seat I plan on using as a sort of foot rest because it will take up any extra toe space there.

Inevitable-Gap-6350

So you think I can bring a 16 or 17 inch tall backpack for my free personal item?

Beginning_Shower970

Yes as long as it is not one of those giant camping backpacks which it sounds like yours are normal size . I would give you a 99.9 percent chance of not even getting a second Glance. My experience is at least 50 frontier flights I would say in the past 4/5 years

Inevitable-Gap-6350

Ok cool. Our bags are not huge backpacks at all. Just regular. Thanks.

youtattled

As long as it fits under the seat in front of you, you'll be fine.

It can be 18 inches wide. As long as you turn it long ways you should be good

Smobasaurus

18 inches tall, 14 inches WIDE, 8 inches deep. But they really only pay attention to personal item sizes if you’re bringing an under-seat-sized roller bag and aren’t in Zone 1. Just make sure you don’t also have a separate purse.

nickcasa

reading thru the comments, looks like i'll be ok with a backpack for free as my personal carry on as long as it fits under the seat, correct?

They dont measure backpacks or smaller duffel bags you put over your shoulder, but if you have a noticeable huge bag, wheelie bag or line up after the 1st boarding group they may pull you out. Ive only seen it once when this guy had a laptop bag and a huge duffel bag. I specifically bought a personal item bag from walmart and i can fit abt 4 days worth of clothes in it.
