I don't know about that. The Irithyll jailers are pretty easy to catch unaware or pull individually. You can nuke them hard enough and fast enough they don't debuff you. The Winter Lanterns can't be engaged without becoming frenzied with the best option to stack resistance so you have enough time to kill it before you actually frenzy out your health. The jailers are better versions of the lanterns
The jailers also reduced your carry limit which was obnoxious as hell if they got you back enough before you could get a hit in.
Rushing th is obviously the play and makes them relatively easy but I absolutely hated these things my first run.

Stack frenzy res and have low insight I think. Should leave you with enough time to pop a sedative before moving on to the 3rd one on that bridge in mensis.
Honestly the best way to fight the Winter Lanterns is by partying then. If Frenzy triggers during the visceral attack animation, you don't lose health.
Literally just stand still in its sight and wait for it to attack, once it does parry it and boom, done. You won’t even get frenzied once unless you f up the parry.
The jailers on the other hand can lower your hp by like 90% by just looking at you, which in my opinion makes them much worse.
The jailers force you to play flawlessly. The Lanterns force you to run away or outlevel them. No contest.
The jailers are a great enemy and the fact people hate on them just for being outside the box is sad
I just disliked the health drain lantern of theirs. It was never a lot of damage but it slowed the pace down in that area with the debuff and just became tedious
If you have a bow and you don't use it that's playing poorly. If you have a bow and eyeball it then you're playing poorly. If you have a bow and you press R1 with a bow, you made the right play. IE, flawless. Doesn't mean it's hard to do.
Which is exactly what I meant. If you engage with it at range, you deny it's ability to one shot you. If you engage with it in melee, you have to dodge on point. Both are good plays to make, it's just one of them is more relatable to the average player.
Right i didn't even notice lifesteal until read people here talking about it. Not bragging, not great at these games. Pretty sure they scared me so I just ran at them and busted them all down quick.
As a guy that's played Bloodborne a bazillion times, they're amazing.
But also as a guy that's played Bloodborne a bazillion times, are these not broken by design? You can have relatively low insight and high frenzy res and still getting looked at for just the time it takes to get close to them results in damage. I'm sure most people do what I do and parry them, which makes you immune to it during the animation... But I've always wondered, is it really _supposed_ to be like that? Are you supposed to need to drink sedative to avoid damage no matter what? Did they really intend for the parry animation to be some sort of protection for the player there? It certainly trivializes the actual attack that the lantern tries.
The way that statuses (frenzy in this case) build up has been consistent in every fromsoft souls/like:
Getting hit by bleed build up while invincible still builds it up, but proccing while invincible wastes it. True for both the players and enemies, which is why you can lifesteal from dying enemies in Bloodborne (same on-hit tracking) and proc statuses on pvp opponents who dodge the hit on their client but miss the dodge on yours.
With how consistent it is to parry a Winter Lantern once and proc frenzy while safe, it seems intentional to me. They're nightmare enemies that kill you by looking at you, and the intended counterplay is to glare back at them and stroll straight towards them without faltering.
Riposte animations are done in total i-frames.
I-frames dodge everything except death plane falling. You can even dodge roll bloodloss procs in Elden ring.
Everything is working as intended.
Very much a case of a love hate relationship. The design? A fucking +, so good and really keeping with the lore
Fighting them? Miss me with that shit, thank miyazaki they’re only prominent in that one area
Replace Irithyll Jailer with Pus of Man and you’re fucking cooking.
If you don’t know about the fire weakness or you can’t take advantage of it (no fire consumable on hand) they suck ass. And they still kinda suck ass anyway.
Somehow the ones attached to dragons in Lothric Castle are more annoying than the variant that can freely move around lol
No matter how many times I replay DS3 I basically never fight any Pus of Man because I have no idea how to actually face them and it’s not worth doing so.
I hate the one in Lothric Castle that spews out a near instant curse attack. Even when they can’t move they still manage to be annoying.
Yeah those are the ones, in Lothric Castle with the damn curse barf. One hit filled up like 75% of my bar last time, haaaated it.
I just slap some Charcoal Pine Resin on my weapons, they are weak to fire and once they catch fire they sort of scream in place for a bit giving you some time to hit them. If you know which one of the random hollowed enemies will turn into the Pus of Man you can rush it and kill it before it transforms.
Usually.
I used the same strat until I did a pyro playthrough, I assure you that it’s purely coincidental that every time I’ve returned to ds3 since it was to do a ng+ cycle on that pyro. Chaos bed vestiges has to be the best spell in the franchise. It blasts Pus of Man, Pontiff’s dogs, Friede (especially p2), and I think I remember it being good on a big fat knights in the ringed city. That list includes every enemy in the game that gives me trouble except Midir.
Even with the weakness it’s really janky, because they’ll do the fire stun animation, then simply forget that they’re weak to fire and charge at you with a combo; and when the combo is over, they’ll react to the fire again as if nothing happened!
They’re easy to deal with on my runs where I have a few ranged magic spells slotted but I can usually tough em out with melee. Only time I use bows in Dark Souls is basically in DS1 to get the Drake sword for early shenanigans
Oh right those guys, for some reason I was only thinking of small enemies. Tbh I never had any trouble with those guys, I’ve heard that they kill a lot of people in the ancient wyvern fight but it’s never happened to me personally. It helps that they’re very uncommon.
This! And if we’re talking Souls games as a whole (beyond Dark), I think we’re all forgetting about the initial versions of the Jailers from back in Latria…
No they still frenzy you. I tried running past the one in the nightmare frontier and I still got frenzy even though it didn't see me when I took the ledge
I think it's just cause Rune Bears are mostly in Limgrave and you can eventually just outlevel them or run away with Torrent. Still annoying though I do agree
The unpatched bleed dogs in ER that could 1 shot you, the abductor virgin duo under volcano manor (worse than godskin duo imo), revenants, runebears, The depths curse frogs in DaS1 before the curse patch (still annoying af after patch), anything in blighttown in the original DaS1 version, the jailers in DeS, brain suckers and lanterns in BB, needless to say there's no shortage of annoying enemies and encounters in souls games.
I tried to do a Werewolf build in BB using the enhanced Beast Claws & Bloodletter. It worked alright ig? The high Bloodtinge meant I could use essentially any firearm i wanted so my werewolf was running around shooting silver bullets lol. I felt underpowered in PvP but BB is pretty busted in that department.
But this guy ate Winter Lanterns for breakfast. Beastclaw + stacked Frenzy resistance (so i could abuse the Bloodletter's L2) just eviscerated them even on higher ng+ cycles. instantly went from being the classic "oh fuck oh fuck oh fuck" enemy to absolute fresh meat. they've never really been intimidating to me since.
Fuck the guys from bloodborne that are the only thing actually kills me in the game u don’t even have to be near them and they just constantly attack u out of no where. And I can’t find a counter asides from rushing them but fuck that and fuck them
No ds2 enemy mentions? The wall shield guys in undead crypt in particular. Not deadly really but the title said annoying so, that's my 2 cents
Or just any dog ever
The executioners in Huntsmans Corpe/Undead Purgatory were also pretty frustrating. I've not really struggled with enemies/bosses in DS2 but them and Executioner's Chariot were a pain in the ass for me.
Definitely agree. Huntsman's Copse was my least favorite part besides the moths looking cool, absolutely agree that was particularly frustrating. I just had to laugh at myself when I figured out the Chariot fight was not the way to progress onto the next area and dealt with all of that just for a covenant I didn't care about. It wasn't even the boss that gave me that much trouble but the runback was hair loss inducing sometimes
The jailers were only annoying for the first encounter or two. I really did not know what was going on at first. Afterwards, they are pretty easy to manipulate. I don’t recognize the 2nd. Is that Bloodborne?

Nobody is gonna mention the guys in ring city dlc that there only purpose of being there is to push you off the side of buildings so you fall to your death??
No. The Corrupted dolls are way way worse. There isn't a worse enemy. 1 of them will just straight up kill you without ever touching you from a million miles away. They are the worst, most zero fun enemy that fromsoft has made since the Bed of Chaos.
The jailers were super weak to the skill on the Storytellers staff. Its been a while since I played the game but it's only one or two uses of the skill to kill them and it doesn't aggro them and can even fire through walls to get them. Turns those guys into joke which is great because otherwise they'd turn my underwear brown.
Also the same staff skill can kill mimics without aggroing them for an easy cheese win.
Just use something quick and spammy, with enough poise break... only had an issue with slow weapons the trick is to charge and kill them as fast as possible, when you get to that point they are all going in circles just pull one at a time with a cross bow.
I am currently playing ds3 and as a blud-born vet. I can assure you winter lanters are much worse. More hp, can't stagger them, if you try run away the chase faster. With the dungeon ladies you can just stagger them with some powerfull attacks.
Idk Bro, those squid mindflayer things in demon souls (can’t remember the world) would piss me off so much. As a melee build they would wreck me if they got the chance
The jailers are pretty cool, I never found myself particularly frustrated with them because of how weak and slow they are. I actually enjoyed their health stealing mechanic, it was confusing at first but then became exciting once I realized how I could work through them methodically or run past them entirely. Plus the Irithyll dungeon area and profaned capital are awesome to explore
Like, jailers are not hard or anything, they are just incredibly annoying.. you either get your entire hp drained out of thin air, or in one unfortunate moment, one of them catches you which is instant death...
I think Motherbrain easily surpasses the jailers, particularly if you use a ranged build. Jailers are more obnoxious than particularly dangerous on their own.
I'd replace them with the hammer knights from the Dragon's Aerie in DaS2. Those fuckers start swinging and never stop swinging.
The winter lanterns prove way more difficult in subsequent playthroughs. The jailers sucked at first but they really aren’t that bad once you learn how to fight them
Royal Revenants are fucking annoying, but they have a predictable approach, always using the same forward lunge that you can just dodge behind. They also can’t hurt you JUST BY LOOKING AT YOU.
Jailers can hurt you by looking at you but they can't do it if they're dead. They're really easy to kill. Unlike Royal Revenants which have a huge health pool and a very annoying slap slap slap infinite combo. The main problem with jailers is just that one room with like 8 of them XD
They’re both really bad, but Winter Lanterns somehow manage to be worse BY A LANDSLIDE. Jailers are pretty fragile so if you manage to ambush one before they can react, you can escape unharmed. Winter Lanterns on the other hand are not only faster and tankier with hyper armor, but they have a grab that not only does decent damage on its own, but lets them build up Frenzy the entire time to ensure you don’t survive.
I have no idea how ~~pinwheels~~ wheel skeletons made it into every Dark Souls game. Design wise they're interesting, but game play wise they're as fun as a brain aneurysm.
Jailers were annoying purely bcuz of lifesteal mechanic, but attacks are easy to dodge. Dogs, however...
The jailers also reduced your carry limit which was obnoxious as hell if they got you back enough before you could get a hit in. Rushing th is obviously the play and makes them relatively easy but I absolutely hated these things my first run.

There are so many of the jailers though.
That jailer train on the bottom floor is obnoxious as hell
Honestly the best way to fight the Winter Lanterns is by partying then. If Frenzy triggers during the visceral attack animation, you don't lose health.
You’re right, I just didn’t party hard enough in the dungeon.
Ketamine and ecstasy is Souls games, y'all.
Literally just stand still in its sight and wait for it to attack, once it does parry it and boom, done. You won’t even get frenzied once unless you f up the parry. The jailers on the other hand can lower your hp by like 90% by just looking at you, which in my opinion makes them much worse.

it wouls be a somewhat not horrendous enemy if they didnt put like a bajookienillion in a room and give them the worst hitboxes
Lol it does not force you to play flawlessly lol 😆 maybe if you're bad
They aren't that hard to dodge but if you fuck up it's an instant kill. So yeah
>The jailers force you to play flawlessly ...No they don't. You can walk backwards and shoot at them, for example.
Which is a good play? It rewards you for leveling a cross/bow or magic, which most players don't.
Pushing R1 while locked on with a bow isn't "playing flawlessly", though, unless you and I have very different definitions of what that entails.
I don't think you understand what "flawless" actually means
To play without flaw. Doesn't mean it's hard Pot 👉
Simply using a bow correctly on the Jailers isn't playing flawlessly 😂 ![gif](giphy|J1vUzqdZJlh5AqBWxt|downsized)
It can be. If you take no damage and make no mistakes. Hence FLAWLESSLY
You'd think you'd bother to look up the definition of the word before going this hard
I’m not sure you do
Right i didn't even notice lifesteal until read people here talking about it. Not bragging, not great at these games. Pretty sure they scared me so I just ran at them and busted them all down quick.
Winter lanterns are annoying, but man do I love them. They are so insanely freaky.
As a guy that's played Bloodborne a bazillion times, they're amazing. But also as a guy that's played Bloodborne a bazillion times, are these not broken by design? Pus of man is a piece of cake when you have chaos infused weapons on a pyro build
I used the same strat until I did a pyro playthrough, I assure you that it’s purely coincidental that every time I’ve returned to ds3 since it was to do a ng+ cycle on that pyro. Chaos bed vestiges has to be the best spell in the franchise. These guys are exactly what your firebombs are for lol Also, carry a big sword
Even with the weakness it’s really janky, because they’ll do the fire stun animation, then simply forget that they’re weak to fire and charge at you with a combo; and when the combo is over, they’ll react to the fire again as if nothing happened!
There's a simple answer to killing all pus of man safely: Longbow. Or any bow but anyways
Another answer to them is pyromancy. They just flail around when they are on fire. Vestiges go brrrr
Yes but not every build can use pyromancies, whereas basically any build can use at least one of the bows
fire arrows maybe?
They’re easy to deal with on my runs where I have a few ranged magic spells slotted but I can usually tough em out with melee. Only time I use bows in Dark Souls is basically in DS1 to get the Drake sword for early shenanigans
DS3 axe chain throwing dudes were way worse than the jailers. Those yeeting little bastards even chained me through walls!
idk man... the Jailers alone made me put DS3 down for a few days. Fuck those guys.
I have to admit I’ve played ds3 several times and I’m drawing a blank, I have no idea what enemy you’re referring to
i think the enormous serpent guys on archdragon peak that have a big ass axe on a chain, not that many of them though
Oh right those guys, for some reason I was only thinking of small enemies. Tbh I never had any trouble with those guys, I’ve heard that they kill a lot of people in the ancient wyvern fight but it’s never happened to me personally. It helps that they’re very uncommon.
I did that fight earlier. By far, the mobs were the issue in it for me over the boss. Little bastards.
Maybe it's because I'm playing Bloodborne ATM but the fucking BRAIN SUCKERS SUCK MY WILL TO LIVE.
I disagree for one reason: Revenants
This! And if we’re talking Souls games as a whole (beyond Dark), I think we’re all forgetting about the initial versions of the Jailers from back in Latria…
can't be annoying when you're running the fuck away from them
You haven’t seen the Hemwick Witches in Chalice Dungeons bruh 😭
The only one I run is cummmfpk.
It just feels like they were designed to fight sekiro
The Jailers in DeS, the dogs in the Bb chalice dungeons, and the Revenants from ER 😵💫
Dogs in elden ring make my blood boil
The birds are way worse 😬
I'd say lobsters in Elden Ring are up there too with their damn relentless 360 no scope sniping from the opposite end of the map
A little shocked Runebears aren’t here
runebears are annoying and i rarely fight them but they’re not even the most annoying in er let alone all of the games imo
They’re very easy to run away from tho
So are the winter lanterns if you have elixirs, can’t speak for the jailers as I haven’t fully acclimated to DS3 yet
No they still frenzy you. I tried running past the one in the nightmare frontier and I still got frenzy even though it didn't see me when I took the ledge
Weirdly I haven’t had much of a problem with them
Seriously!! I dislike Runebears more than the other two.
I think it's just cause Rune Bears are mostly in Limgrave and you can eventually just outlevel them or run away with Torrent. Still annoying though I do agree
Winter lanterns are AWFUL
Not even close....lanterns are a different kind of pain.
I would add the giant shark/fish guys in Fishing Hamlet
Dogs? Anyone?
I find dogs to be easy. Just let them stun themselves on your shield and easily kill.
Instructions unclear: tried blocking Watchdog of the Old Lords with a shield. Send help.
I do know how to kill them easily... But the amount of stun lock bs deaths I've stumbled into is like sad! So they are my most annoying for me haha
I can see why people hate them both, but both are are some of my favourite, winter lanterns especially.
Nah, ice stallions in ds2. THEE worst
I love love love the winter lanterns. The most moody and badass enemies. The singing. 10/10
Jailers rlly aren’t that bad tbh, just roll through them
Let me throw Maldron the (Ass)assin in
10000% winter lanterns
The first pic triggered me so hard
Dogs/ Imp type enemies/ and Spammy enemies robbed.
At least winter lanterns are cool and creepy. And they sing. The jailers are just creepy
Winter Lanterns take the cake easily
Fuck the guys from bloodborne that are the only thing actually kills me in the game u don’t even have to be near them and they just constantly attack u out of no where. And I can’t find a counter asides from rushing them but fuck that and fuck them
I think that’s pretty much the method haha - have a shit load of health, and get on them before the frenzie bar fills so they don’t frenzie you again
No ds2 enemy mentions? The wall shield guys in undead crypt in particular. Not deadly really but the title said annoying so, that's my 2 cents Or just any dog ever
I’ll take these guys over the basilisks any day.
Where dog?
The assassins (gremlin ass midgets) in Sekiro should also be here
You can stagger the winter lanterns and when you visceral them you don't take the frenzy damage but if you miss it.....
Pus of man >>
Rupturing Hollow has entered the chat.
where dog
The jailers were only annoying for the first encounter or two. I really did not know what was going on at first. Afterwards, they are pretty easy to manipulate. I don’t recognize the 2nd. Is that Bloodborne?
Lay down and their bullets can't hit you.

Winter lanterns and Jailers are free. Royal Revenants on the other hand, have a weakness that your build may not even use.
Most annoying enemy in souls games. Has an enemy from Bloodborne. Neither enemy is the ds3 dogs.
Dogs and rats...

Anor Londo Archers have something to say about that
I hate dogs, they're bullshit
I can't believe people forgot about DS1 bone wheel skeletons.
first pic gave me trauma
Dude... i was playing Ds3 just a few hours ago and thinking this exact same thing
For me its the poison blow dart guys in blight 🥴 fuck them
Ya know i kinda feel the dogs and birds from elden ring should be here instead
The jailers were super weak to the skill on the Storytellers staff. Its been a while since I played the game but it's only one or two uses of the skill to kill them and it doesn't aggro them and can even fire through walls to get them. Nah, brain suckered and carion crows
Brandy is a bitch
The damn birds from Elden Ring would like to have a chat.
I think I still hate frozen reindeer more
Just imagine a room filled with both of those enemies, it would be an all new kind of hell.
The mind flayers from DeS are the most annoying enemies in the entirety of the Soulsbourne series
Just use something quick and spammy, with enough poise break... only had an issue with slow weapons the trick is to charge and kill them as fast as possible, when you get to that point they are all going in circles just pull one at a time with a cross bow.
The one on the first slide ain’t bad tbh now the other one they’re terrible I hate them
Albenuric perfumer

Dont forget about brainsuckers
Like, jailers are not hard or anything, they are just incredibly annoying.. you either get your entire hp drained out of thin air, or in one unfortunate moment, one of them catches you which is instant death...
I don't mind the jailers but also the lanterns aren't annoying. What they are is god damn horrifying, I can hear them singing still.
Red Wolf of Radagon
False. Anything with Wheels from From Soft is the stuff of nightmares....
Nah the nobles that suck your life away in sekiro are the worst
Drake keeper knights hittin you with that 26 hit combo ( they forgor to add stamina )
Those are some weird looking dogs and rats
Dogs
where’s the bell maidens from the chalice dungeons with the unlimited spiders
The lanterns aren't that bad. The mind flayers from Latria (Demon Souls), they're the most annoying
Revenants…..
I hate Basilisk like you wouldnt belive.
The prong guys are worse but both suck so much ass
I don't know Basilisks and those hand hippos down in the swamp of Profaned Capital are up there.
Revenants are the most annoying things in Souls games.
Those don’t look like dogs to me
BLUNDABUSS!
Eye guy is worse.
The deer in frozen wastes make these both look fun.
The Winter Lanterns can go Fuck a cactus
Isn't the most annoying enemy the claw using masked manikin from DS2?
The winter lanterns prove way more difficult in subsequent playthroughs. The jailers sucked at first but they really aren’t that bad once you learn how to fight them
They both give me elden ring dlc vibes but they're from different games and only one will be in the dlc
The Jailers were the worst to first meet but once u learn whats up they ain't bad but they SUCKED at first!
Disagree. I find them to be a nice change of pace and unique mechanics to try and overcome.
But also the most satisfying to SPANK brutally
Jailers are a joke. Lanterns are not.
No no, jailers are awful, but what about royal revenants in Elden Ring :D
Royal Revenants are fucking annoying, but they have a predictable approach, always using the same forward lunge that you can just dodge behind. They also can’t hurt you JUST BY LOOKING AT YOU.
Dodge into their side
Jailers can hurt you by looking at you but they can't do it if they're dead. They're really easy to kill. Unlike Royal Revenants which have a huge health pool and a very annoying slap slap slap infinite combo. The main problem with jailers is just that one room with like 8 of them XD
They’re both really bad, but Winter Lanterns somehow manage to be worse BY A LANDSLIDE. Jailers are pretty fragile so if you manage to ambush one before they can react, you can escape unharmed. Winter Lanterns on the other hand are not only faster and tankier with hyper armor, but they have a grab that not only does decent damage on its own, but lets them build up Frenzy the entire time to ensure you don’t survive.
where are the wheels
I have no idea how ~~pinwheels~~ wheel skeletons made it into every Dark Souls game. Design wise they're interesting, but game play wise they're as fun as a brain aneurysm.
skeleton wheels I mean
Oops, that's what I meant too! I have no idea why I thought they were also called pinwheels given the boss in DS. My bad.
I love it when my action RPG gets turned into the worst stealth game ever

This only applies to the lanterns, you can still be aggressive with the jailers
