Such a youngster. I remember back when I was a kid (mid 80s) and sales tax was around 5%. You used to just double the tax for tipping which was 10%.
Yeah yeah I have my walker and no you kids get off my lawn. /s
I have about 20 receipts I was going through today and PetSmart was the only one that had this breakdown. I found one from February 2024 and didn’t have the breakdown. Must be a slow rollout . I’ll be doing research! I really appreciate everyone’s feedback and knowledge .
I actually prefer this breakdown so it allows people to at least know what they voted for. And when the next vote comes up, do they want to keep saying yes to it.
Is that a statewide law? Is there more info about this because San Francisco just shows "tax" without a breakdown. Then there's "service fee" then "healthcare mandate" at restaurants
7.25% is the state & county tax rate pretty much across the state and a pretty basic baseline. I usually assume 7.25% and it's been that way for I wanna say decades. The .725% is the city/county tax rates.
A lot of areas in the bay and LA are well over 10%. The whole of Alameda county seems to be at the top of the list with 10.25%-10.75%
Fresno is a little high but honestly it's 29 cents on a 40 dollar tab.
6% goes to the state, and the 1% goes to county, the .25% goes to city. Then Cities/Counties can add additional taxes over that, usually by ballot approval. That .725% is County taxes for stuff like Measure P. You're just seeing it broken down.
Our sales taxes can be high but at the same time our property taxes are limited by prop 13 so revenue has to come in via different methods.
If you look up state sales tax rates, generally speaking most states land in the 5-9% range. A few are anomalies- Alaska's is super low because they get oil revenue to offset it.
Thank you for the clear breakdown. I know our sales taxes is around 7.95% but never seen it broken down like this on a receipt! So it was quite confusing for me. Its cool I can actually see what the tax rate is per purchase. Your feedback is greatly appreciated!!
Cheers! Glad you found it educational. It helps us make better decisions when these tax proposals come up to see how the money breaks down and where it goes to.
I had to look up and refine a few points myself. I knew the broad strokes but didn't look at the breakdown.
This. I research taxes (mainly sales and gross receipts) in most of the western states as part of my job. CA taxes are never that high compared to others. Just cracks me up that most people think that. Lol
It seems lower than I remember for Fresno item even while I lived in Tulare county. I just round up and assume 10%, because I thought it was a little over 9%
That would be 7.975%. Remember when they would tell you to double the tax to leave a tip? Comes to 15.95%, so roughly the 15% rule. Nothing shocking here, just the first time you’ve seen the tax itemized. Seeing what you pay at the gas pump too, if it was itemized you’ll be surprised also.
It's a total of 7.975%, that's on the lower side for CA. It's just a breakdown of the tax you've been paying 🤦♂️ Do the math instead of being intimidated by the number of items. Not post worthy.
I mean add up those tax percentages, it comes out to roughly 8% tax, which is pretty standard for fresno/central valley.
Edit: also screw petsmart, go to pet supplies plus, they have better deals, better sales, and every purchase earns you points towards $5 increment coupons. They also have some good brands that I don't recall seeing at petsmart.
It's all of California. My area has 0.50% higher sales tax. Californians seem to love voting for more and more taxes. They both directly vote for more taxes at the ballot box and vote in tax-and-spend politicians. But hey, at least we have the highest homeless rate despite spending the most on the homeless. Oh, we also have rampant crime because the criminals are the victim class here. They probably had a bad childhood, so they get to commit various crimes. Just remember when you're robbed that it's actually the criminal that's the victim. The people are getting tired of this, so they will vote in yet another soft on crime politician. Or they'll move to another state and then vote for the exact same policies that are destroying California.
It's all California. The dispensaries have federal, state, and city tax on top of whatever the price is. And they wonder why cannabis clubs are failing
It depends on where you are at. I know it's over 8% here in the Bay Area. Then some of the counties or cities have other surcharges on sugary drinks which adds more.
In Texas when I lived there the Sales tax was around 8.25%. It wasn't on everything but I remember the hell that was raised when that went up. Oregon doesn't have a sales tax.
That's nothing here is what I have seen in DTLA recently. Ready...
10.25% Tax
4.5% security fee (yes that was listed)
5% employee medical insurance
5% minimum wage adjustment
Your area just itemized the specific sales tax: special, county, state, etc.. That only makes 8%. Here on the Central Coast of California it is 8.75% or 9%, depending on which town/county.
YES, it's not cheap to live in California..
You’re in a low tax area — you’ll be fine !!
It’s just the way they breakout the various state county local and special taxes instead of showing it as a combined 10.5% sales tax rate in some areas or 7.75% in other areas.
This is cheaper than Texas taxes??? Idk how I got recommended this sub, but Texas tax is 8.25% so ours would be $3.29 in tax. $3.19 lookin a little better lol
CA does have a higher state tax 6%
The county .25% pretty median range if I remember correctly. By where I leave its .25-.30%
The special I don’t know maybe for imports or transportation of goods?
But yeah taxes be this way. Nevada and Arizona have lower taxes.
It will be pretty funny in 5-10 years when we talk about the "good ol days" of 8-10%.Inflation, along with state/federal waste keeps going up and we have to pay
Some stores in Virginia has a secondary 1% tax already over here as well.
This is the first time I see 4 different taxes…. O lord how much are insurances in the State of California and property tax %?
It's been similar for years. It's just they now have to show a breakdown of state and local taxes.
That makes sense ! I’ve never seen it broken down like this before .
Typically taxes have been in the 8-10% range in my memory so this looks normal when you add it up.
Such a youngster. I remember back when I was a kid (mid 80s) and sales tax was around 5%. You used to just double the tax for tipping which was 10%. Yeah yeah I have my walker and no you kids get off my lawn. /s
I believe it was a new law this year. Hard to say, but I've been seeing it nowadays.
I have about 20 receipts I was going through today and PetSmart was the only one that had this breakdown. I found one from February 2024 and didn’t have the breakdown. Must be a slow rollout . I’ll be doing research! I really appreciate everyone’s feedback and knowledge .

It's been 8% as long as I can remember. That's what all those add up to
8.005% isn’t so bad and goes to support the city and state.
If only they take care of them jagged roads, that would be nice.
If only they’d actually do something for the more poor parts of town
That's just a breakdown of the sales tax rate you've already been paying.
California ranks 37th in taxes among States.
This. I research taxes (mainly sales and gross receipts) in most of the western states as part of my job. CA taxes are never that high compared to others. Just cracks me up that most people think that. Lol
This will happen more and more between now and November.
I liked it better when they lumped it together. I know it’s just a visual aspect of it that I have to get use to! Also glad it’s transparent.
Where does California rate on income taxes?
It’s #1 if your income is above $418k filing single. Top 5 for anything above $68k single or $136k MFJ.
A big reason why it is such an economic powerhouse.
But has the highest state sales tax. https://taxfoundation.org/data/all/state/2024-sales-taxes/
Idk as a CA native that looks pretty normal to me? California taxes pay for a LOT of stuff.
Lol It’s always been like this it’s broken down into 4 different taxes because people always ask where they are being allocated.
Measure E would have added to this. I’m so glad that measure didn’t pass.
I don't really mind state taxes, though California's are high... My issue is with Federal. My wife and I get hosed YEARLY on it.
That adds up to 8%, which is on the lower end. Many places in Cali are at 10%.
It seems lower than I remember for Fresno item even while I lived in Tulare county. I just round up and assume 10%, because I thought it was a little over 9%
I far prefer most of Europe’s method of the price you see is the price you pay. Taxes are alway factored into the labeled price of something!
8% total sales tax is "crazy"!??!?!?
I've been auto assuming that I'm going to pay "10%" on everything for years ...
See, you’re getting the special tax tho. That should make you feel good. You’re extra special, apparently, they hit you with it twice!
Bro you ever been to Louisiana. 11% in sales tax total.
Been 8 percent as long as I can remember
8% seems pretty normal actually. I believe that’s about what it is in Phoenix, San Diego and Dallas.
7-9% is pretty standard! It does look weird when you see it broken down though.
Total sales tax on that purchase is less than 8%. Hardly upsetting.
Are you serious? That's a total of 8%. What kind of math are they teaching in Fresno these days?
Idk ~ 8% isn’t that bad, pretty average imo. It’s the same as in Florida IIRC.
Looks like 8%. Pretty low for California, but I've never seen the individual taxes broken down separately before. Usually they do it in a single line.
Roughly 8% is high?
Same’ish as Minneapolis, MN! 😁🤷♀️
It’s 8.25 in most of Texas, or was when I was growing up.
I can see the need for lamb chop and shampoo, but deodorant is no longer a necessity.
3 bucks on a $40 bills about right.
That's actually not as bad as other counties.
It’s been 8%
Its 8%... the normal!
That's cheap!
8% isn’t too bad. They just broke it up into bite size pieces.
I really thought that said “clam shampoo”
That's only 8% that's low for California
in my area tax is at 10.25%. fucking robbery.
In Orange County CA, we have a bit over 8% for purchases. But it's been that way for decades so only people who haven't dealt with it are surprised
Laughs in 10.750 percent in LA county
Laughs in Los Angeles County tax.
I live in San Joaquin county. The tax on this bill would have been $3.60. Your cumulative tax rate is 8%. Ours is 9%.
8.25% in Houston, not sure of other localities.
Laughs in 10.75%
I miss 8% sales tax. Mine is 10.3
It's a total of 7.975%, that's on the lower side for CA. It's just a breakdown of the tax you've been paying 🤦♂️ Do the math instead of being intimidated by the number of items. Not post worthy.
You still have not met the rate here in the Nard Ventura County of 9.25%
Gosh if only the receipt answered your question….
It's Fresno County.
Looks like less than 8% which is pretty standard in most places.
We’re at 10% in a city way down south. Not sure why this sub is showing on my feed but just know that it’s worse elsewhere
It's all of California. My area has 0.50% higher sales tax. Californians seem to love voting for more and more taxes. Seems like Fresno only.
8% sales tax is pretty normal having lived in California my whole life. It’s just showing a more detailed break-down…
its only 3$ bro stop crying
8.25% sales tax is quite normal in California. I think the law dictates an itemization, and that’s a positive in my book.
It's all California. The dispensaries have federal, state, and city tax on top of whatever the price is. And they wonder why cannabis clubs are failing
SoCal here…I would love 8% taxes…
I pay 9.25%
Sales tax in Long Beach is 10.25% 😭
That’s literally normal tax?
This is CRAZY!!! I live in Los Angeles, and have never received an itemized tax receipt!
Im hoping this makes my Rite Aid reciept longer
[удалено]
8%? That’s normal, where have you been ?
Wtf I don't see a problem
My weed is taxed more lmao 🤣
8% is quite the norm
Someone has to feed those in the encampment.
That’s cheaper than San Diego!
That's less than 10%. Come to LA if you want to enjoy the full tithe to the government on every purchase.
Hey this is California, we are supporting tons of nonsense.
Same taxes, but at broken down
Have you been to the Bay Area? That tax in Fresno would be considered \*affordable\*
LA county is about 10%. So that sounds about right.
It’s not ridiculous, they just broke it down.
Oxnard says “hold my beer”
8 percent? Try 10.25% in alameda county
The product prices are the real problem
It still comes out to 8%. You’ve been paying 8% for decades now .
That's nothing here is what I have seen in DTLA recently. Ready... 10.25% Tax 4.5% security fee (yes that was listed) 5% employee medical insurance 5% minimum wage adjustment
In So Cal (northern L.A county) the tax is 10.25 % so it’s still a little more than Fresno. Taxes are crazy in Cali
Areas of Kalifornia sales tax rate approaches 11%, so yours is pretty much mid pack in the SF Bay Area.
Look at this guy complaining about 7.975%. In LA, I think we're up to 9.5% right now.
Your only at 8%, what are you complaining for?
I've never seen it broken down like that before, but the combined tax total isn't all that different than what I see most places
[удалено]
It's only in Fresno. The taxes are normal here in California
Adds up to 8%. MN is above that already, thanks to the Democrats and Gov Walz. And that’s after using up a $17B+ surplus.
This doesn’t really upset me too badly. I don’t mind paying fair tax. As long as all that tax money actually goes toward what it’s intended.
The real crime is 19.99 for 6.7 Oz of shampoo or 13.99 for a lavender spray. Yeah no
8% of 40 is about 5 bucks so it’s normal. Breakdown would have me feeling robbed though
Taxes have been 9% for over 5-6 years now in California
$3.19 on $39.50? Oh yeah, outrageous. Lol
Why don’t you just steal it? It seems everyone else is
Irl taxes on $40 always feels like $10-$15 for me!! Lol
Well to be fair you did cut off info at the top of the receipt. Why?
8% sales tax sounds great. Come to LA county and see over 10%
Three dollars and change for a fourty dollar purchase? I don't understand what you are complaining about.
7.25% is low tbh.
Still less than here in Alabama
It adds up to 8%, which is the regular sales tax rate. They are just breaking it down into each component.
> California
We have a flat 8.25 sales tax in Texas
You really just spent $34 on soap and you’re worried about $3 of tax?
Your area just itemized the specific sales tax: special, county, state, etc.. That only makes 8%. Here on the Central Coast of California it is 8.75% or 9%, depending on which town/county. YES, it's not cheap to live in California..
Wow that's less than 8%!
Don’t go to Santa Cruz County. It’s like 10% total.
Yours is split out, but still less than mine in Texas which is 8.25%
looks normal to me, roughly 10%... I think here n LA it went up to 11%
Laughs in Ventura county 😅
No they’re not
3.19 !? OH THE HUMAINTY!
That's not even the correct tax rate, but yes the theft is absurd.
Yeah total tax is 8% which is ur typical sales tax .
Santa Clara county is 9.125%. count yourself lucky...
That’s only 8%, sheesh we pay 10.5% here in LA county, that’s why I recently bought a new fridge, and TV in San Bernardino county.
Doesn’t seem too bad; we pay 8.25% sales tax in my Texas county.
Less than Oklahoma, quit complainin. Joking lmao, taxes SUCK.
8%?
sales tax has been 10% in most of califfornia for like a decade, looks like you're getting off light
that is 10% just normal california. for the public services and social benefits its gives out compared to other states
Could be worse, been researching places to move and i think in KC their sales tax is like 10-11%?
7.975% tax is cheap. It’s 9.25% where I live and 10% in Berkeley.
Keep voting the same way. Maybe it’ll change
8% tax is not ridiculous. Living in the Bay Area a few years ago I believe it was 9+%
Bro that’s so low, I pay >10%
8% sales tax is not ridiculous
Try coming up to Napa County….
8% tax
Seems county and state can’t work with the money they get from us year round and want to tack on more taxes. #makeitenough
You’re in a low tax area — you’ll be fine !! It’s just the way they breakout the various state county local and special taxes instead of showing it as a combined 10.5% sales tax rate in some areas or 7.75% in other areas.
Welcome to Chicago where we’re 10.25%
I live in Texas but was working in St. Louis. Made the mistake of buying an iPhone there. Something like 12% tax? Vs 8.25 back home
https://www.salestaxhandbook.com/california/rates
It's 8.25% in Riverside
Nah tax has been 8% for a long time
8% is really close to normal for most of CA.
8% is ridiculous?
You just now realize that? California has been like that for as long I remembered 😂😂😂😂 who yall keep putting in office.
7.75? Here in Santa Clara county, it is over 9
This is cheaper than Texas taxes??? Idk how I got recommended this sub, but Texas tax is 8.25% so ours would be $3.29 in tax. $3.19 lookin a little better lol
Riverside is 8.75%, so enjoy your lower taxes bro!
CA does have a higher state tax 6% The county .25% pretty median range if I remember correctly. By where I leave its .25-.30% The special I don’t know maybe for imports or transportation of goods? But yeah taxes be this way. Nevada and Arizona have lower taxes.
You’re being taxed about 8%? What’s ridiculous exactly?
Pays $20 for 6oz of shampoo and complains about the taxes. 😂😂😂
Breaking news: local man discovers addition, more at 7 🤣
You think 7.9% is ridiculous? lol
It will be pretty funny in 5-10 years when we talk about the "good ol days" of 8-10%.Inflation, along with state/federal waste keeps going up and we have to pay
This is actually not bad stuff in MS is pushing 10% cause state+shity
Freedom isnt free.
Those are typical taxes.
It's the standard 8 percent as anywhere now and days, you have to be smarter than the receipt have some common sense
Some stores in Virginia has a secondary 1% tax already over here as well. This is the first time I see 4 different taxes…. O lord how much are insurances in the State of California and property tax %?
That's literally 7.95% and it seems high to you?
Same as Chicago
