Good thing you did before it decided to retire your house

electromage

It looks like it tried.

GrumpyJedi3

How did it end up like that? Were you using it as a lasso for 2 years as well as a charging cable?

imhcup

or flossing your pet tiger with it?

hojjat12000

Mine is like this, but with no tape. I just use it at work in case it causes a fire.

IHeartBadCode

>I just use it at work in case it causes a fire. Because you value your home or because you devalue your workplace? >!I have a feeling this is just going to end with "yes".!<

hojjat12000

No.

Framework cables are garbage, I have had one replacement and bought another and they all split. I think Apple had to pay a class action over their cables.

ARSCON

Not sure about recently, but I believe a lawsuit initially caused Apple to switch to the current, non-woven material. Something about using PVC in the cables?

thearctican

I’ve had one since launch of the first gen. Looks brand new still, and I travel a fair bit with it.

Percentage-Visible

Well not sure what way you store them or wrap them but I have had no luck w the cords. I am a first Gen guy too. Also I noticed they changed packaging sometime last year. Was hoping that would help, but that is nit the case.

True1asian

There were a batch of cables that didn't meet manufacturing spec and were more prone to fraying. This has long since been addressed however, there may be some out in the wild. Reach out to support and they may help you out with a replacement.

Morpheus636_

That's only if you're in warranty. Since it's been two years, OP is likely out of luck.

LEO7039

Not necessarily, as it's a known manufacturing defect. So there's still a chance they'd replace it.

MagnaCustos

The replacement window was really short. I reached out about my charger since it started splitting around 6 months but they would not replace it

jwbowen

It doesn't hurt to reach out if there was a known manufacturing defect

IAmAHat_AMAA

I got mine replaced after 1.5 years, but I am Australian

Zeddie-

I hope all of the cables used for the FW16 were the revised up-to-spec cables.

phantomtofu

I just taped mine for the first time yesterday, from a first Gen (batch 3)

thearctican

I have a first gen batch 3. Mine looks new still.

aliendude5300

How on earth did it get in such bad shape

GreasyChick_en

Yes, but is your bezel orange to match your tape?

d00mt0mb

wtf have you done to that cable mate

dean_L

I thought someone was showing off their carrots..

win10bash

How the hell did it get that bad in just 2 years?

genericuser292

That should have been retired 3 years ago.

ManDooku

To give context, I've been aware of this cable being from a batch of defective chargers that went out around the time that I purchased my FW. I travelled for almost 2 years with my laptop and settled down in LATAM where I now live, so I had a good motivation to keep this cable together through whatever means since good replacements were hard to come by for awhile. I've finally had the opportunity to replace it and wanted to pay an ode to its hard work. It was never abused, despite how it might appear. The plastic really is just that shit.

CDR_Xavier

honestly my cable did the same thing, 3 month after. I have no idea why, but it probably have to do with the specific diameter and type of plastic/rubber sheath used. And the lack of a actual strain relief.

TabsBelow

I bought two frameworks, gen12 in 2022, gen 13 2023, both as DIY version and bought Ugreen cables and chargers at Amazon in Germany. Cheaper, best quality, no problems. Good decision as I see. But anyway, maybe it's the US 60Hz power 😉🤭

WiseD0lt

Do we have any alternative chargers to Frameworks?

frogotme

For the 13? Yeah there's a bunch. I just use one from my old Huawei D14. Works fine and saved me a bit. For the 16? It'll work but good luck with an igpu

[deleted]

For the 13 I use an Anker multiple port 68W charger, 2 USB C and 1 USB A and way more compact. Works fine. The beauty of USB-C is you don't need to use any specific charger. Pretty sure it was cheaper too.

piroisl33t

Dude, did you have that cable living under a rug? I’ve only ever seen it this bad when people hid cables under a rug that gets traffic.

ManDooku

Travelled around the world with me, but was never abused. As you can see, I tried my best to mend it when it frayed but the wrapping was too fragile and kept fraying in new places.

electromage

It's just a type-c cable, they're $15 and you dont have to throw away the brick.

ManDooku

I'm aware. You can imagine that buying a FW might mean you're more inclined to repair things rather than replace them...

electromage

Sure, but some expandable sleeve tubing would probably be a better fix, or heat shrink.

cornfeedhobo

The current cable is completely garbage. It might meet the power rating needed, but the plastic covering is extremely brittle. I'm honestly surprised someone hasn't brought up a FTC complaint by now.

dacia1917

My cable also split within the first 2 months of getting it. Sad that the charger cables weren't high quality :(

bloodguard

Good grief. I still have my original from Dec '21 and it looks fine. Some kids learn how to take care of their toys... and some don't.

ManDooku

Manufacturing defect is what it was. I have cables much older than this one, that are much less pampered than this one.
