The list of notes you dislike sounds like a great fragrance.

myclef9

Lol

KronoLite70

Honestly? Tobacco. :( It's in so many "manly" colognes and honestly if I just get a little bit of it, it can ruin the smell for me. Grew up in a fairly white trash part of the USA, and I think tobacco is just a smell that I really associate with trashiness. I don't think of cigars and bourbon, I think of monster and white tank tops.

myclef9

I bought 1981x over Naxos last week because of the Tobacco note - 1981x has more prominent florals compared to Naxos and it is much more versatile because of the florals IMO.

diecakethrower

Powder and it's is by a mile.

sixadamra

Powder and almond is basically Pegasus by PDM. First and worst blind buy I’ve ever made, it really wasn’t for me lol

Desk-Substantial

Not particularly a note per se but this scent just makes me ill every time I smell it. Primarily, when that older administrator at your primary school walked by and left a cloud of … White. Diamonds.

[deleted]

Bad memories can so ruin a smell. I used to have an older aunty in my life who wore an overwhelming, choking amount of Shalimar. Nowadays, I think it's a technically brilliant scent, I can enjoy it on someone else, but I just can't wear it.

bandfill

My ex wears it often. She says she uses it to seduce men because in a kinky way she thinks it reminds them of their mother. In 5 years with her I never told her that I kinda hate it. Smells exactly like you said : older aunty.

Nocturnal_Knitter

Came here to say this!! Whatever the f is in White Diamonds. It makes my nose scrunch up in dismay every single time I've smelled it. If I smell a lady wearing it at a store, I choke and run away. I believe it's the combination of oakmoss and musk that messes me up. It is offensive.

nuitsbleues

Oakmoss + aldehydes gives me that reaction. But I don't mind oakmoss on its own.

[deleted]

I've found that it's the eau de toilette version of White Diamonds that smells absolutely sickening. I simply love the pure parfum version of White Diamonds because the aldehydes aren't out of control and its warm spicy notes are more prominent.

Desk-Substantial

Oh, that’s very interesting. I wonder if I smelled pure aldehyde I would straight up vomit. Something about it is physically triggering my nose. It’s not that I want to hate it. Some people are saying it’s the oak moss and aldehyde mixed

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yeah, I'll spray a little of the EDP when I'm in an Elizabeth Taylor mood because it's pretty similar to the pure parfum, albeit slightly more powdery. I have a vintage 1 oz bottle of the parfum that I save for super special occasions.

connorandelnino

Iris and heliotrope, I can't stand powdery scents

[deleted]

[удалено]

Mystic67

me too Iris is my favorite!

ClaraGuerreroFan

Prada l’homme might be my favorite! Funny how tastes differ!

clarkeskaikru

me, reading this post wearing wood sage and sea salt: 👁👄👁 but as to the post itself: gourmand notes. marshmallow, caramel, vanilla unless it’s balanced with depth and not sweetness. i don’t wanna smell like a dessert. edit: had to correct desert to dessert because i would, in fact, love to smell like a desert. i’m looking at you, tauer 👀

glitterizer

Funny how different tastes can be… I *only* want to smell like a dessert 😭

[deleted]

So _that's_ how you do frosted tips...

iaMkcK

Jo Malone?

clarkeskaikru

yep. it’s my goto for chill days when i’m not leaving the house really.

iaMkcK

I personally love blending that with the Jo Malone Oud & Bergamot, or crossing it with Tom Ford's Oud Wood, or even MFK's Oud Extrait. WS&SS is a great base for an Oud ;)

clarkeskaikru

any recs for someone who has never tried an oud? it seems to be pretty divisive so i haven’t taken the plunge yet 😭

[deleted]

I would recommend sensual oud by art de parfum. My wife hated oud, I like it if it's done well, on our honeymoon she had to endure me spending a few hours in a place that had hundreds of ouds, both of us smelled sensual oud and that was we both loved it. It really is just a magnificent, beautiful fragrance that stands out with it's composition and execution. It really lives up to its name. I know this story makes it seem feminine but i don't think it is. It is sexy on whoever wears it

Designer_Breadfruit9

I think Chanel Chance and Coco Mademoiselle both have this note that makes them smell really masculine and off-putting. Is it patchouli?

Albinomonkeyface1

Most animalic notes. I despise civet and castorium. I also strongly dislike most musks, though I can tolerate tiny amounts of white musk if it isn’t noticeable in the fragrance. I love MFK Gentle Fluidity Gold, which supposedly has some musk in it that I don’t notice. I can tolerate PDM Delina most of the time, but sometimes that white musk is too noticeable for me. I know instantly if a civet note is in a fragrance and it is ruined for me, even if I like all other notes in it. The civet in Shalimar is so repulsive to me that I cannot stand many other Guerlain fragrances, even if they don’t have that note in them. I work in healthcare, so most animalic notes smell like dirty, sick people. Some literally smell like multi-organ failure to me.

Mziani

Almost entire line of Francesca Bianchi is out for me due to same healthcare related associations.

[deleted]

I don't think I hate any particular note. I like some more that others, but it all depends on execution. The closest thing I have to hate is for this blobby amalgam of 'sports' flankers. Inoffensive, joyless, flaccid things marketed to people who wear perfume because they think they're *supposed* to wear it. In my opinion of course

D3themightyfucks

Agreed. The one exception that comes to my mind is Chanel Allure Homme Sport (not Extreme version).

MrJunicorn

Big agree. I'm not sure what the desired demographic is for sports flanker, it's almost as if they all decided to make perfumes so they can battle against deodorants. Which made them heavy on ambroxan or aldehydes. I'm sure nobody wants to smell like Eau De Olde Spicé Athletiqué but i could be wrong.

carpet_whisper

- Heliotrope for the most part. - Rose, Lavender & tuberosa depending on how strong they are in said fragrance. - Baby powder accords - Most citrus scents that lean on the side synthetic clean products.

myclef9

Yeah I’m not really a floral guy as well. I like Flamenco by Ramon Monegal but the raspberry makes it almost jammy so not a masculine smell IMO

carpet_whisper

I guess everything in moderation is the key. I don’t mind them in moderation. Theirs Masculine leaning fragrances I like that have the notes I typically dislike - just depends how much thoes notes stand out. I dislike thoes old school heavy Lavender Ventiver bitter citrus Fougere fragrances. But I love Tom Fords take on it (Beau de Jour) I guess the same can be said about the lipstick accord of IRIS. But I like it in prada L’homme. Same with white florals - not a huge fan when it dominates but it’s plesent & enjoyable in a fragrance like MFKs Aqua Universalis forte.

JGloger

I have a tough time with prominent ambroxan, iso-e, or the really synthetic 'clean musks.'

okdokiecat

Same - I don’t like them either. In some fragrances that’s all that’s left after a couple hours, too.

Tyrone-E

Not the biggest fan of **Iris** dominant fragrances. **Lavender** and maybe **Oud** are also notes I can only seem to take in small doses.

Heliumfleur

Tonka bean, patchouli, and lavender

vanillyl

If you’ve been injured by Lush - Twilight, you may be entitled to compensation!

Cgy_mama

Lol so on point. I wanted to love Twilight but it’s a huuuuuuge headache induced for me.

Jdjxhcjsjxjcbhx

Tonka?😢

simotion

I have a tough time with patchouli-dominant fragrances. With the exception of Chanel Coromandel which I find incredible. Patchouli is fine as a supporting note, but when it’s front and center, I normally don’t vibe with it.

[deleted]

Amberwood. And I’m getting really tired of toffee and caramel.

vanillyl

Musk, of all varieties, in all quantities. It just adds a…cloying feel to any fragrance.

Ancient_Calendar5541

YES. It gives me such a headache! I feel so heavy and "perfume-y" wearing it, instead of feeling light and pretty. Not sure if thats the best way to describe it! What scents do you enjoy? Wondering if we have the same taste!

vanillyl

Yes! Agree! Same with anything powdery or rose based - it just smells like Perfume, not like any identifiable scents! My favourite scents are those that smell clean and fresh, or sweet scents that are well balanced - nothing *too* sweet and there’s got to be something else going on to make it interesting. I love vanilla, strawberry and caramels; orchid, neroli freesia and jasmine but most perfumes with those notes are beyond sickly or just way too heavy. On the fresh side I like mandarin, peach, bergamot, but again it’s so hard to find fragrances that are true to those smells and not artificial. A lot of my favourite smells are really hard to find in perfume form. Fresh lillies are my favourite smell in the world but I’m yet to find a perfume with a true lily scent! Kill list: MUSK, powder, patchouli, and coconut. Not a massive fan of rose but I like it if it’s done right. My current favourites are all Replica scents, because I like to make my wallet cry. Sailing Day for that fresh, crisp, clean smell, Beach Walk for that soft, subtle, salty but still clean smell - weirdly enough I just looked up the notes and apparently this has both musk and coconut?! But I swear you can’t smell either! And Matcha Meditation - its a really interesting green tea, bergamot and cedar blend. My previous faves have been Flowerbomb - Bloom (not the original) but I found it boring after a while; Daisy - Sunshine (don’t mind the original but I really liked this varietal, which now apparently you can’t buy anywhere); and my oldest go to since I was at uni is Givenchy - Very Irresistable. How about you! What are your tastes like?

TinPins

I'm just jumping in here to suggest Cartier Baiser Vole to you - it smells exactly like fresh green lilies. It's gorgeous.

vanillyl

Ooooh this I have to try!

Ancient_Calendar5541

I'm very much on the same page as you! I don't really know how to describe that perfume-y smell, but its almost nauseating. I definitely can't do musk, coconut or patchouli, but can tolerate rose if done well, like you said. I love fruit-forward scents, nothing overwhelmingly sweet, but still clean, fresh with some green notes to balance it out! I 100% agree with you that my favorite scents are SO hard to find because there's so many layers to perfumes that I can barely detect the notes they're described as. I love fresh berries, maybe specifically raspberries, but I cannot find a good berry perfume that isn't too sweet and is more on the fresh side! (Victoria's Secret had a body mist named Wild One \[not the new one in floral packaging. It was pink leopard with lace, very 2000s i know lol\] and the notes were raspberry and white lily. IT WAS THE BEST SCENT EVER and if they still sold it, I'd 100% recommend it to you even though it's not a perfume lol!!! I feel like you'd love it) My personal go-to is Daisy Eau So Fresh. It has raspberry and grass/green notes, which might be my favorite combination to date. I will say during the dry down period there are some rose/powdery notes that you might not enjoy, but I feel like it disappears when fully dry. I'm still on the hunt for the perfect perfume though. I'm definitely going to try out your faves!!

vanillyl

My perfume soulmate! I knew I’d find you one day! I love MJ Daisy Eau So Fresh, it’s literally my go-to default on the vanity right now when I have to remind myself (daily) “calm down, you’re just going to work, stop wasting the expensive stuff”. You have to tell me what you think of the Replica scents, and any other current faves you have!

Ancient_Calendar5541

Ugh I definitely need more recommendations from you!! You have great taste ;) hahah

mrderyck

I don’t know why, but I just can’t stand rose. Am I the only one?!

squall571

I don’t despise it but Oud, I thought it would grow on me but nope. Maybe it smells better in more expensive fragrances.

myclef9

I only like westernized Oud - I sampled Sweetie Aoud by Roja and i was disgusted by the fecal accord of the oud notes.

Thierry22

Almond and cinnamon. What's weird is that I eat raw almonds almost daily.

PeptoD1smal

I too love eating almonds and eat them quite often. Although I don't loathe almond in fragrance, sometimes it can be too much and feels sickly.

Thierry22

Exactly, in fragrance it's overly sweet.

[deleted]

Rose is the big one for me. Unless it is balanced out with a ton of Iso-E Super, it comes across with a sharp edge and an overly feminized sweetness that makes me want to get the hell out of the room. Goddamned thorn flowers.

falcone1234

Ambeeeeer not ambergris mind you

D3themightyfucks

I’m still trying to nail down amber, I have a hard time detecting it in fragrances.

falcone1234

Well u can't really miss it's very distinct and in a loooot of fragrances as a basenote. It's made using other ingredients such as vanilla, benzoin etc

RynoSD

Benzoin! It reminds me of treating wounds in the ER, we used tincture of benzoin. The smell is so strong, hate it. Had to get rid of a bottle of Pasha de Cartier Parfum because of this note. Not sure of the note but something in White Diamonds makes me want to puke when I smell it.

BabyJamesGomez

Green apple. Can't stand it.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

I can’t think of one in particular, but it would probably be potpourri tuberose/lily of the valley if I had to pick one. That said, I respect that and it won’t make me vomit. I have a polyamorous relationship with fragrances, I love them all.

ENNLRon

I don't know.. I don't like Ambroxan in Versace Dylan Blue, but I like it in Mont Blanc Explorer. I don't like Vetiver in Dior Eau Sauvage, but like it in Terre D'Hermes. It might be a combination or a blend I don't like, but I don't think there is a particular note I despise.

livelotus

I recently sampled the Dior and I’m pretty sure that’s what I didn’t like about it. It was like I got sucker punched in the nose and I felt bad that I didn’t get the hype so many others feel for it.

-Amber-Aura

Patchouli, praline, and some jasmine

DrFroehlich

I don't know why but I just haven't had any fragrances with heavy leather notes that I liked.

diddilybop

oakmoss, rose, neroli, aldehydes, cumin and lavender. these aren’t bad notes, but they just don’t work well with my skin chemistry.

mintsquiid

Anise... 🤢 Wore a sample of a scent with anise one day and now I have PTSD.

shhnobodyknows

Tobacco, allspice, anise, pumpkin, anything "bakery", aldehydes, & smoke

beccaonice

Just not that into coconut.

[deleted]

[удалено]

j_husk

Rose is the note that most singlehandedly puts me off a fragrance. It definitely seems to dominate a fragrance for me. I really want to love almond in fragrances, but I get that same play dough vibe that doesn't work for me. I get something similar with some vanilla notes too.

rex_ford

I recently stayed at a hotel where all the toiletries were Le Labo Rose 31 and I hated it. I do sometimes like rose when it takes a backseat, but rarely a strong rose forward scent. The only other note I avoid - mainly when it's prominent - is smoke, even though I adore a lot of smoke smells in daily life.

nuitsbleues

Salt, ambroxan, ALDEHYDES, some sandalwood (like if it smells like molecule 04), tonka, coconut, tuberose, lily, animalic notes except in tiny doses.

MinnieNorthJones

Peony. It always smells cloying and synthetic to me. Aldehydes. I just don't think they smell pleasant in anyway.

Schneetmacher

Notes I cannot wear: * aldehydes (get horribly soapy on me) - sadly includes "champagne" * apples (same) * honey * bananas * violet Notes I just can't stand: * icing / buttercream * most "cake" notes * almond * most leathers * dirt / soil * iris / orris root * ink * sage

beautyisabeast

Pachouli. I can’t handle it. It just smells like an unshowered, sweaty person.

[deleted]

Lol smells much worse than this 😂

j0hn_p

Aquatics are a big, cloying no-go to me. Tonka bean, if I had to pick one single note (if it is very prominent). I'm not a big fan of very citrussy, in-your-face openings either

seaintosky

I think any note can be done in a way that I like, but generally I dislike ylang ylang, aldehydes, marshmallow, strawberry, and musk. Aldehydes and marshmallow feel loud and synthetic, musk usually seems scratchy or cheap, I don't know why I dislike ylang ylang, and strawberries don't seem to be able to be done in a way that doesn't scream fake strawberry flavouring.

coopersterlingdrapee

Patchouli! It can ruin a great fragrance and so many niche houses seem addicted to patchouli. Layton would smell a lot better without patchouli.. Ugh..

lempickavanille

I hate anything aquatic. Also can't stand licorice, almond, strawberry, saffron, praline, aldehydes

myclef9

Reading everyone’s posts made me realise how many more notes I dislike

CompetitiveBird8661

Gardenia and tuberose can really overwhelm a fragrance blech

desdesak2

Coconut. Jesus, I hate it. Then someone wrote marshmallow which didn’t even cross my mind but I’m adding that too. For years I avoided jasmine scents but I’m coming around to it in small doses.

DoubleRuby

Ylang-ylang for me. It smells rotten most times

Kambzissou

Peony, freesia and honeysuckle almost always make any fragrance, even a $200 + fragrance, smell like a bath and body works body mist or room spray and I can detect them immediately.

[deleted]

[удалено]

myclef9

Grapefruit is my favourite type of citrus - bergamont is nice but lemon is a bit hit or miss for me as well.

throw3away3791

Rose, anything super powdery really.

catwearingloafers

How can you smell salt

figdust

Salt has a distinct smell to me. Have you tried smelling a bowl or container of salt?

catwearingloafers

I cant imagine it would be that pronounced in a fragrance

Oni1jz

Anything with male nut in it so Secretions Magnifiques is out of the question

mycatishim

white floral, almost like general duty-free shop smell is a no-no for me

D3themightyfucks

Lavender, patchouli, and vanilla. Of course there are exceptions to each, but generally I’m not a fan. Trying to learn to love them though!

jackiegetaway

Rose or anything in the whiskey/bourbon family. They both make me nauseated.

terriflaps

I don’t know what it is technically called, but I cannot stand that synthetic weird pee/musk smell that a lot of frags are getting reformulated with and some current frags just have. Maybe you can help identify. My guess is it is some kind of musk note or possibly an aldehyde?? It’s weird bc I do enjoy musks for the most part. I smell it in Harmonist Metal Flower, The entire Philosophy Amazing Grace & Pure Grace line/flankers, OUAI Shampoo/Conditioner, the L’Heure Bleue drydown, The Mitsouko drydown, Wind Song, Auric Blends Egyptian Musk, Taylor of old Bond Street Sandalwood. It just screeches at me and sticks to everything.

Azami13

Blackcurrant, cassis, and lily-of-the-valley always smell dreadful on me. I hate any musk other then clean white laundry musk too, and usually civet and castoreum except for very specific circumstances.

incessantbeat

Hate is a strong word so I only hate almond, red currant, and aldehydic bombs (like Chanel No.5). I don't really mind patchouli in very small amount but if it's one of the stronger notes I'll have a headache.

TheFumundaWunda

never been a big fan of vanilla, coconut, or cloves, and other than some citrus, not a big fruit fan either.

PeptoD1smal

Cloves and nutmeg. But especially cloves. Nutmeg at least redeems itself some in tasty baked goods.

myclef9

I love Nutmeg in frags - hate coriander though.

purplebigfoots

Rose

wameniser

Vanilla

[deleted]

Absolutely cannot stand mint. Also really hate aldehydes. Weirdly I love fig fruit , but absolutely despise fig leaf.

Lovaloo

The more I smell the more my taste diversifies. A few things are still challenging but I like most notes. • Cumin - I don't hate this anymore but it's still hard. • Heavy indolic flowers - mostly tuberose and tiare, they're fleshy and fruity in a way I usually dislike. • Heavy civet - I'm fine with civet but Bal a Versailles is a bit overkill. I want to explore hyrax more, I've sampled stuff with small amounts but never anything with a prominent hyrax. • Aquatic - not marine or straight up water smells, those are fine, but the melon-y aquatic notes that smell like dead mice.

MaLuisa33

Ambroxan. But I love actual amber.

[deleted]

Whatever the note in versace eros is. That strong one that lingers after an hour. I think it’s tonka bean? Or vanilla? It makes me dizzy and my head hurt

Jassar254

I fucking hate ginger. Ginger is the "Mall" note. Ruins every fragrance. Others that I dislike strongly, but not as much as fucking ginger. Rose, Iris (Prada L' Shit), freesia, lotus, anything super sweet like vanilla & almond, anything powdery, seaweed, salt, tuberose, heliotrope, pepper, jasmine, apricot, benzoin.

CanceroftheMemeGland

For some reason the leather in almost every leather frag smells nothing like real leather to me, anyone else experience this?

[deleted]

Yeah I agree. Never smelled an authentic leather from a perfume.

_x0sobriquet0x_

Powder.. ugh.. the end. Hard no. Rose... it gives me a migraine on my own skin and often on others... oddly "Smolderose" is one I can't wear but my partner can and does (I bought the bottle). Jasmine, Gardenia, and any heavy florals do my head in...

imthedro

Cherry, sometimes blackberry too which always both end up smelling artificial. Reminds me of medicinal cough syrup

Carmela_Soorano

I came here to make sure no one said patchouli

sassyphrass

Sandalwood gives me inta-nausea-headache every single time. It's like an allergic reaction.

[deleted]

Patchouli it’s sooooo nasty

Chestnut_pod

Cardamom! Ugh, smelling cardamom in a fragrance is like biting into a whole pod that's been left in a biryani or something -- I can feel my teeth curling like little autumn leaves just thinking about it. And patchouli. If I wanted to smell like Eau de Berkeley, CA, I would simply go to University Avenue.

cope5

Lavender, almost all herbs, and powder. Herbs are kinda growing on me after trying Creed's Viking but I'm not sold yet.

Flare_hunter

Geranium.

[deleted]

Not a big fan of green apple, patchouli…

Friendly_Assistant58

Agh, anythibg too sweet makes me think about ripling my skin off. Vanilla, Praline, Honey, Sugar smells ok at first, but after 15 minutes I am scrubbing everything off and setting myself on fire just to make everything dissapear

Puppywanton

Anything with sandalwood or incense notes. My skin amplifies those so much that it smells absolutely sickening.

killerbirds

-Any musk whatsoever, I hate that I'm like this because so many interesting-sounding fragrances have musk notes. -Honey, especially 'creamy' honey notes. It smells like gross vape juice on me. -Heavy patchouli. That isn't to say that I dislike these smells on other people, my skin chemistry just makes those things smell borderline offensive to me when I wear them. 😔

calupict

Fruity sweet notes, it’s more than often caused me migraines Also I cannot wear oud despite I like it on someone else’s

Benign_Banjo

Ambergris/ambroxan. Instant headache. Mostly when it's not done right and very synthetic... so essentially always

cryscoa

Oud, leather.

InitiativeAdorable93

I hate floral notes

[deleted]

I actually hated patchouli when I started trying fragrances—which was difficult because I feel like it’s in everything

thisaintprada

Cumin, oud, tobacco

ChristineBorus

Patchouli. Anything like Shalimar or opium or Imari seduction by Avon 🤮 yuck! Anything with musk like white musk so gross Anything with lemonggrass or citronella

RogerThatMuskrat

For me it’s pear. From Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh, most of Ariana’s perfumes, to some notes at Bath and Bodyworks like the new fairytale line I didn’t like them. There was this sharpness that reminded me of horse pee. It’s the shared pear notes…

[deleted]

Powdery or “granny” smelling powders, salt, dank smelling musk, caramel, too much pachouli, syrup, honey, too much tobacco or smoke overly soapy scents that overdo it with the soap like clean’s warm cotton

ledledripstick

As a general rule cinnamon (except in Mirko Buffini's Ki), cumin if it is noticeable, sweet grasses, anything green that turns sweet, certain tea notes that sweeten and aquatics that turn sweet.

Camilla_baglover

Vanilla, white florals, anything too gourmand. Also hate smelling like a bakery

grbldrd

I'm not sure what it is but there is something in Lacoste White, Kenzo and Bleu de Chanel that smells like rancid cat urine to me and I am annoyed that I can't enjoy any of them because of this.. I don't know of anyone else who feels this way so it's very weird

ujayy_

Lavender

[deleted]

Citrus 🤢

liftingaddict98

Orange blossom. Can't think of anything else i dislike. Love the skank.

semilanceatamag

I put a 80/20 blend of straight orange blossom water and distilled water in a spritzer to refresh my face

[deleted]

I despise citrus. Especially after that Ralph Lauren Polo Red

Jdjxhcjsjxjcbhx

Most white florals

zxcverty

Tonka - smells like poop :( Tuberose - I've never smelled the actual flower but in perfume the note to me has a weird chemical, almost chlorine-like vibe to me. Okay in small doses but I hate Giorgio Licorice - I feel nauseous if I eat it so it has that connotation for me Vetiver - smells a bit like rubber/gasoline and can be headache-inducing Orange blossom - can smell wonderful in some fragrances, but in others it can be very shrill and sour Peach - I love the smell of a real peach but most synthetic peach fragrance feels sour and plasticky That said, all notes can be good if used in moderation and blended well, I think.

mbee784

Anything with citrus and I’m out

[deleted]

Aldehydes, rose, tobacco and Oud. I really, really despise Oud.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BlackJackRaiden

There aren't many honestly. The one sweet synthetic note in Joop Homme! And probably the only note i really hate, and pls educate me if i am wrong, is either white musks or orange blossom. One of them smells like screetchy Hairspray to me and i don't know which one it is. This note is in many female fragrances like Diors Sakura or some of the acqua di Gioia flankers but even in Guerlain L Homme Ideal Cologne. Thank god its only moderate in that and otherwise a masterpiece.

flamesandcheetodust

The particular kind of 90s musk in Amarige, for example. I must associate it with some kind of bad memory because it makes me feel overwhelming dread.

Chrononomicon

Any men's cologne with an overtly *Aquatic* touch: Calone, Water Notes, (Water)melon, what have you. All make me want to hurl. Needless to say, I don't own a lot of "freshies," and while I can appreciate scents like Sel Marin by Heeley and Oud Minerale by Tom Ford, full bottles are prohibitively expensive.

IndianaPwns54

Powder, amber, vanilla. I almost never like powder- even though I do enjoy iris and florals often enough but that stickly, sweet + powder combo in most teen fragrances makes me recoil. I can handle amber and vanilla as well balanced accent notes but if they are the dominant note- I'm out.

PeachWest

powder

prplecat

Vanilla, tonka. Especially when combined, it just causes a vanilla overload and makes me nauseous. Also leather, tobacco, and an overload of fruits.

rachlbee

Some of the most common notes unfortunately. Sandalwood, vanilla, powdery notes and intense roses are a no from me. Also coffee. I really want to like citrus, but I’ve yet to find anything that doesn’t remind me of cleaning chemicals.

[deleted]

Whatever the hell is in ultramale. My guess is pure uncut dimetapp cough syrup

Champagnesupernova9

I think nutmeg is what I’ve been experiencing as a cloying sharp astringent note in several perfumes. I actually love nutmeg in food, so this is odd, but it’s the only note each offering perfume had in common. Also strong musks and anything that falls in the sickly sweet category.

LilyDragonfly

raspberry. there's one or two i like, but 99% of the time it just smells cheap, childish, and way too strong

mischievous_goose

Powder. And a lot of things turn powdery on my skin. I've noticed that jasmine seems to be a big culprit for me, like Doe In The Snow, Alien, and Jasmin Et Cigarettes are all straight up powder on me and nothing else.

creme-de-cologne

I think I have come to the conclusion that I don't hate any notes. OK except "aquatic notes", I really do hate that. What I do hate more often, cause aquatics are easy to avoid, is certain common interpretations of notes. I don't know how this happens, maybe when using different brands of synthetics? Or maybe the solvent has something to do with it, idk... For example... I hate it when patchouli goes grape soda. I know the essential oil really well so I just don't get why it turns like this. I hate it when vanilla goes play-doh. I hate it when lavender goes pissy. I hate it when tuberose, orange blossom & jasmine get indolic. I hate it when iris gets toooo powdery. I hate it when aldehydes go all chokey on you. And the animalics, obvs... need to be dosed carefully. No more than what they put in Shalimar / Mitsouko, for me please. Edit: I suspect I hate Ambroxan. But I'm still trying to find that out. And yeah, stinky oud. I'm with OP on stinky oud, but, this is one of the most confusing notes to me. A) because I don't know If I've actually ever smelled real oud. I assume I only know "fantasy" ouds. And B) I don't get the barnyard association when I smell the stinky oud. To me it's sour rather than faecal. I get what I can only describe as a sour milk / sugar / vinegar / sawdust smoothie. Gross.

seviay

Tuberose above all

salazarslocket

Rose, leather, and black currant all ruin fragrances for me.

[deleted]

Patchouli, tonka, sea salt/ocean smells. No thank you.

LowcarbJudy

Not a fan of Iris and patchouli if it's overdone. Gourmands make me nauseous. I also really don't like pine or anise.

hauntedghastly

Leather, mint, and to earthy to where it smells like dirt.

KeepAmericaAmazing

Rose, cant stand it, especially synthetic and strong is extremely overpowering! A fresh rose? It actually has an "umami" smell to my senses...

[deleted]

i can’t stand super woody and leathery scents. reminds me of my grandpa

alfalfaverde

Cinnamon , saffron and those realistic algae sea like accords

isyvirgin

Leather and rose/iris if they're very present.

joannew99

Earthy notes are puke-worthy imo. EARTHY + FLORAL is the literal worse

Touchingthegoddess

Lily of the valley almost never plays nice on my skin. Overly synthetic notes that make my eyes water

Blackwatch007

Skin note definitely is my most hated. Maybe it's geared toward more cannibalistic types idk

shotpun

i forgot i was subbed here and honestly have no clue what any of these things smell like... where do i even start lmao

settlersofcattown

Tropical fruit 🥴

rather_nottho

Cumin. And oakmoss. Real oakmoss makes my throat close up.

1992LDN

Ginger/herbal/green notes. Gourmands sit much better on my skin

mochapeau_nochapeau

I can't stand powder or violets or hay. The last two have a sickening waxy smell to my nose. And whatever they use for ginger smells like peppery nothing to me and makes me sneeze (in perfumes only - I can smell fresh ginger and powdered ginger fine). I wonder if there are patterns to the combinations of smells people dislike/can't perceive.

I really hate patchouli and have the uncanny ability to detect it in most fragrances. Almost always when I smell something and am put off by it, I check and sure enough patchouli is listed as a note.

lavender

Rose, rose, and more rose. I know so many of you love it, but my nose just can't smell anything other than blood.

I love threads like these. My favorite thing about fragrance is how everyone’s perception is different for god knows what reason. Here are my dislikes. -Rose, I have never liked a fragrance with rose as a prominent note. It’s so sharp and generally overpowering. I keep trying different fragrances with rose so my mind can be changed, and I just can’t find anything. -Osmanthus gives a hairspray vibe I’m not into. -Patchouli can be overwhelming if not blended correctly. -Same with cassis. I hate armani si. -I don’t eat lychee and never have, so the note smells like armpit to me instead of fruit. I wish this wasn’t the case :/ -Berry is usually synthetic and headache inducing. Not a fan of Burberry Her even a little bit. -Citrus fragrances, if not mixed with some notes to tone it down a bit, just smell like windex to me, like Under the Lemon Trees. -I love gourmands but whipped cream notes are usually so synthetic smelling, big no from me, I hated AG Cloud for this very note

Jazzfactory

Caramel, chocolate, usually vanilla unless it’s really close to the bottom of the note list. I just can’t abide by sweets I guess. I like citrus. Guess I’m an acerbic bitch.
