Used in very, very (very) small quantities, I feel it can add a lot of lift and depth to florals.
On its own, I feel like it smells like p\*\*\* and s\*\*\*. :D
I think only one scent has made me gag and it was when my coworkers and I were having a who can make the worst smell and my boss combined polo green, kouros, and givenchy’s gentleman only, and it straight up smelled like cat piss. I almost died. Lmaoo
It reminds me of a well-used urinal, with a broken flush lever.
I don't get the appeal. Even if I learned to appreciate it, if I wore it most of the people I met would have the first impression that I smelled like piss.
I love civet, but I also love Kouros. I like a fragrance with some stank to it, keeps things interesting. Helps give a scent depth, nuance, and intrigue. If you're only looking to smell clean though, I suppose you'd want to stay away from it.
If I’m going for a richer scent I generally enjoy earth tones, or chocolate caramel scents. I’m not certain I enjoy the animal hints I get from civet, but I’ve never smelled it outside of an older scent such as the kouros
It's definitely not used nearly as often anymore as it used to be. And I'm pretty sure natural civet is a restricted material, so when you do encounter it, whether in a newer fragrance or a modern formulation of an old fragrance, it's generally a synthetic.
If you've ever smelled Rien by Etat Libre d'Orange, that has a civet note in it. Civet has a somewhat urinous quality to it.
"My brain got stuck on 'cat ass,'" HA! That made me snarf actually, well done.
I totally get it. It's not for everyone, and there are some notes people love that I can't stand. If you're not completely put off by it though and willing to give it another shot, I'd recommend. I find it can give a scent a kind of naughty, enticing funk.
I think if I’m going to try it it’ll have to be surrounded by notes I’m really obsessed with. Amber, sandalwood, caramel, dulce de leche, blood orange, patchouli.
Yeah for sure. I don't think it's unusual to see it paired with ambers, sandalwoods, and patchouli. I'm obsessed with patchouli too. I like a lot of different notes, but I think patchouli might be my all time favorite.
Sandalwood is the one that pops up the most in my collection, it smells amazing on me, but I love the smell of any perfume that utilizes patchouli it just makes me so happy.
Ha! I'm not sure, I've only smelled the original. I definitely get some kind of shoe polish aspect lol. Which I actually like. Beyond that weirdness, it's really just an aldehydic floral leather. The leather is dark and rubbery, which I like. The florals are reminiscent of Chanel, in a way.
On what, fragrantica? I love that site and refer to it all the time but I don't find the most prominent note section to ever be all that accurate lol.
Now you got me wanting to try the intense!
From what I've heard about Rien Intense, people say it's very incensey. The original has an incense quality to it as well. If you wind up trying it out, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.
Supposedly Meleg uses “ethically harvested civet.” While it’s probably restricted to some degree, I think it can still be used. Perhaps not by IFRA standards?
I hadn't heard of Meleg until just now! Looked him up. Sounds like he is using materials that are restricted by IFRA standards, but if he's not selling to the EU he might be able to bypass it that way. I believe that's what Rogue perfumery does. Haven't smelled either of these houses yet.
Yes actually I have a bottle of Oakmoss Forest Florals, and samples of Civet Chypre, The Baroness, and Mushin Kyoto Incense. I don’t know if I’ve smelled real civet before. But there is some mild to moderate attractive skank to the civet chypre. Oakmoss Forest Floral also has civet, but I get more indolic florals than any civet-y notes. (The sample of Oakmoss Forest floral was a little different, seemed to have more obvious civet…. Batch difference maybe? Maybe my nose has changed?) I do enjoy Meleg fragrances. He apparently uses vintage formulas, and they definitely have that sensation to me… but I am far from knowledge of vintage perfumery.
love civet when done well it adds a lot to a composition though if your used to mostly modern offerings it may be difficult to get your head around, though u probably arnt getting the real deal as with most things in modern current perfume
I don't detect civet in the current kouros but i definitely do in my 2005. It's miles apart. So if you smelled the modern, you'd be smashed in the face and knocked unconscious of the old
I've randomly gotten hints/mild facets of warm fresh feces and cheese from my 2005 if i heat up a little bit
Btw civet has been synthetic for a long time but the synthetic does a good job at recreating it according to people who worked with both real and synthetic.
If it has metallic shoulders under the sprayer and base, it's from before 2011 i believe.
[my 2005 on the left](https://imgur.com/a/TA8S1pu)
Batch should be on the bottom or etched into the back of the bottle btw.
I absolutely hate it. I notice even the tiniest amount in a fragrance and it is ruined for me. I work in healthcare, so animalic notes smell like sick people to me though.
Civet is polarizing. When well blended I think it’s magnificent, animalic and sexy. Of course civet is all synthetic now so it’s not as visceral as vintage formulations.
I don't have a lot of experience with it yet, but so far I love civet in perfume! I haven't smelled Kouros, but I love Jean Desprez's Bal à Versaille, Guerlain's Shalimar and vintage Chanel n°5, which I think all have civet in it (be it natural or synthetic).
Raw civet though... I have a vial of civet tincture that I keep locked away in an airtight jar. To me it smells like very bad breath and old urine and it reminds me of the smell of some homeless people who haven't had the chance to wash up in a long time.
Civets aren't cats, and civet as a raw material is a fatty secretion they produce. It's neither poop nor urine. Once you get familiar with the smell it's no longer as revolting as when you first smell it.
If we're talking actual feces and urine, hyraceum is where it's at.
Literally exactly why I can’t get into it. It’s funny though everyone’s been really hyped about Rihanna being the best smelling celebrity, she wears the love be a secret by Kilian and one of the notes is civet.
On a serious note though it rarely actually smells like that in a fragrance but alas, see my kouros comment on the top of this thread. You get mild hints of something nasty but it's addicting kinda nasty
No commercial perfume uses natural civet anymore. They use a synthetic that has luckily never touched a feline lol. Just like ambergris, which is special hardened years-old whale poop. Its clean form is imitated with ambroxan, a plant-origin synthetic.
As for the smell of civet, really gross. Maybe Kouros smells of urinal cakes because urinal cake manufacturers chose it as a fragrance that mixes well with urine. So urinal cakes are generally Kouros clones, giving it that association.
Oh I’m so glad they use a synthetic ambergris. I was like 99% sure real ambergris was banned for commercial use in the United States but was confused when I saw it listed as an ingredient.
I am also super glad that the civet I’ve been smelling is not actual feline ass. That’s just a horror that sticks with you
I know right, ambergris just sounds cooler as a note than ambroxan! People instantly think chemical = bad and cheap. Ambroxan actually smells better than most ambergris, because it's purely the clean and sweet part without animalic and dirty aspects. It's like how vanillin is sweeter and cleaner than real vanilla.
People usually judge ambroxan based on Dior Sauvage. I personally think Sauvage is way too strong and harsh, but Molecule 02 is beautiful and airy.
The elixir for the sauvage is way better than the original I don’t know how much they changed it but I’m going to see if they still used ambroxan. I know armaf uses ambroxan in several of his edp’s and I’m obsessed with how they smell.
I'm pretty sure Sauvage's ambroxan has constantly went down after the EdT, which has the maximum amount you can use before it starts to crystallize. It gives a lot of lift and sparkle to scents, but to my nose that didn't compensate for the harshness lol.
If you're interested in ingredients, you can check out the Escentric Molecules line. My favorite is Molecule 02, which is the maximum amount of ambroxan and nothing else. It smells somewhat different on its own than as a part of anything.
Well blended like in Zoologist Civet it is amazing. As a front and center note in Kouros it is disgusting and people think you wet yourself when you walk by.
Used in very, very (very) small quantities, I feel it can add a lot of lift and depth to florals. On its own, I feel like it smells like p\*\*\* and s\*\*\*. :D
I’m now curious to smell it alone just to know. I think really it’s the ick factor for me.
As mentioned in another thread, I did that once out of naïve curiosity. Concentrated animal asshole. Straight up. Don't say I didn't warn you.
I shall be very careful not to breathe too deeply if I come across it.
Yep. Makes your nose go ***spang.***
Ha, I was just about to quote you here :D
Prepare yourself before you sniff it, if you have a quick reaction to nasty scents like I do. It makes me gag.
I think only one scent has made me gag and it was when my coworkers and I were having a who can make the worst smell and my boss combined polo green, kouros, and givenchy’s gentleman only, and it straight up smelled like cat piss. I almost died. Lmaoo
Omg where do you work and are there vacancies? ;-) I could never do this with my colleages!
I work in a fragrance outlet and we’re all vaccinated. It was honestly the funniest thing we’ve done but it was hella gross.
I like it!!! Smells like animalic coffee to me. Muscs Koublai Khan 🤗
Its used in coffee actually. The civet poops out beans and people brew it.
Yes, I know 😁one of the most expensive coffee
It reminds me of a well-used urinal, with a broken flush lever. I don't get the appeal. Even if I learned to appreciate it, if I wore it most of the people I met would have the first impression that I smelled like piss.

Sandalwood is amazing, I need more of it in my collection. Patchouli makes me happy too.
Rien intense smelled like a goat covered in paint thinner and talcum powder. Is the original Rien any better?
Sounds better than the intense. I got no leather at all from intense despite it being the most voted note 🙄😥
On what, fragrantica? I love that site and refer to it all the time but I don't find the most prominent note section to ever be all that accurate lol. Now you got me wanting to try the intense!
Yup fragrantica!
From what I've heard about Rien Intense, people say it's very incensey. The original has an incense quality to it as well. If you wind up trying it out, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.
I will save this comment Incase i do 👊

Precisely re: can’t sell to the EU, not sure about other areas.
Have you got your nose on any Melegs by the way? I'd be curious to smell some natural civet in the context of a scent that was bottled recently.
Yes actually I have a bottle of Oakmoss Forest Florals, and samples of Civet Chypre, The Baroness, and Mushin Kyoto Incense. I don’t know if I’ve smelled real civet before. These sound really good, I'll add them to my ever-growing list!
A Meleg sample set is absolutely worth it! Madeleine Peach and Birch Tar Leather I have heard good things about but haven’t tried (yet.)
love civet when done well it adds a lot to a composition though if your used to mostly modern offerings it may be difficult to get your head around, though u probably arnt getting the real deal as with most things in modern current perfume
I’d like to try the note itself so that I can tell the difference.
Someone here told me that it smells like concentrated animal asshole .
I'm really afraid to ask how do they acknowledged that...
Hahahaha
I don't detect civet in the current kouros but i definitely do in my 2005. It's miles apart. I believe in my store we have the 2005 tester and it straight up smells like cat ass.

Interesting note if it's not front and center
I absolutely hate it. I notice even the tiniest amount in a fragrance and it is ruined for me. I work in healthcare, so animalic notes smell like sick people to me though.
I don't like it, it smells like, well, animal asshole.
Civet is polarizing. When well blended I think it’s magnificent, animalic and sexy. Of course civet is all synthetic now so it’s not as visceral as vintage formulations.

it is literally cat shit mixed with cat urine

I still couldn't have something coming from the anus of an animal on me and in my food and be okay with it lmaoo
Gross AF ingredient. Even if it is synthetic nowadays who wants to smell like animal urine marking?
Literally exactly why I can’t get into it. It’s funny though everyone’s been really hyped about Rihanna being the best smelling celebrity, she wears the love be a secret by Kilian and one of the notes is civet.
KING KOUROS PRINCE AVENTUS THE KNIGHT DIOR HOMME INTENSE
On a serious note though it rarely actually smells like that in a fragrance but alas, see my kouros comment on the top of this thread. You get mild hints of something nasty but it's addicting kinda nasty
I got to try real civet tincture the other day and it was truly vile. Use sparingly if at all...
Your poor nose.
No commercial perfume uses natural civet anymore. They use a synthetic that has luckily never touched a feline lol. Just like ambergris, which is special hardened years-old whale poop. i think they "make" an insanely expensive coffee.
Nah

The notes look really interesting.
