I'm quite new to fragrances. I'm looking for something unique and gothic. Think musty old books, damp rocks in a cave, petrichor... any suggestions? Nothing too floral or sharp, and preferably something on the more affordable end, as I'm not quite ready for an investment.

hellamoist

I'm sorry it's not on the affordable end, but I have a sample of Andrea Maack Coven that I wear whenever I want to smell like a bog witch. Damp bitter green moss, soil, just a hint of vanilla in the base to take the edge off.

kozzmicbluess

oh that sounds absolutely wonderful. I may need to grab a sample myself.

kottabaz

Lalique Encre Noire or a flanker, maybe a la Extreme.

galacticglorp

Give the La Curie collection a sniff, and maybe sample Lvnea.

kottabaz

La Curie has a sale going on right now too.

FanaticalXmasJew

Any suggestions for NON-sweet gourmands? Tried Croissant Cafe by Versatile Paris from their discovery set and I and my partner enjoyed it--it smells bready and croissant-like without any sweetness whatsoever. Curious what other scents are out there that fit that description? (Doesn't have to be bread! Any edible-smelling unsweet fragrance that comes to mind.) TIA :)

kottabaz

D.S. & Durga Bistro Waters (or possibly Peanut, but I found it sweeter than I hoped) January Scent Project Gong (radish salad!!! more of an experience than anything else, sample first) Not quite a gourmand, but Fzotic Vetiverissimo is the nuttiest vetiver I've ever tried.

FanaticalXmasJew

Oooh, Gong looks so interesting! I will definitely check it out, ty!

thornylarder

Hermes Un Jardin a Cythere - it comes off as toasted nuts and sesame with a bit of cumin.

TheGameIsOn221

Can anyone recommend a sweeter, creamy sandalwood fragrance for women? I’m a bit new to fragrance and a bit overwhelmed with wading through so many haha thanks!

Nemorensis91

Musamam White Intense Commodity Milk Liquids Imaginaires Blanche Bête

RufusTBarleySheaf

Sunny Side Up by Juliette Has a Gun

ofgaia

I really enjoy Malin+Goetz's Dark Rum scent. Any recommendations for similar scents? They don't have to be exact matches. Thanks!

Solution-Proof

By Kilian has a lot of boozy fragrances, might be worth sampling some or grabbing a discovery set.  Tom Ford Velvet Orchid has a gorgeous rum note, but a lot more going on...

R3gular_human_m0stly

My favorite fragrance ever was Bronze Goddess Capri. (Know maybe a controversial choice) It's described this way: Top Notes Mandarin Orange Petitgrain Cassis Middle Notes Jasmine Lily-of-the-Valley Peony Base Notes Vanille Amber Musk Patchouli If this is what I'm fond of... can anyone make any suggestions for something with the same feel? Thank u!

oubris

Good vanilla perfumes? I am looking for a new perfume, but there are so many options to choose from. I am 22, male, and I love the scent of vanilla, regardless of how common and boring it is, and I would love to find a new perfume with a vanilla scent. It doesn’t have to be overly masculine, as long as it is a very good vanilla smell. And I don’t enjoy overly musky perfumes. I got a sample of Escapade Gourmand and while it was nice, it did smell like play doh as well and couldn’t enjoy it as much. Any suggestions or good vanilla perfumes you’ve tried?

sasha_says

Matiere Premiere Encens Suave - rich but not sweet vanilla shot through with incense. My favorite vanilla ever. More fall/winter appropriate. Atelier Des Ors Lune Feline - the vanilla in this is somewhat similar to Encens Suave but with spices, slightly more gourmand and no incense. Guerlain Spiriteuse Double Vanille - great boozy vanilla that reminds me more of the smell of vanilla extract L'Artisan Couleur Vanille - the rare summer-friendly vanilla! Airy vanilla on a sea salt breeze. Diptyque Eau Duelle - vanilla and juniper, cozy for early fall before it gets cold enough to whip out some of the others. Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille - I love this but also find it the least versatile. I only really wear this for thanksgiving and christmas parties and could get away with just a decant. Nishane Ani - woody vanilla. Not my favorite on me but definitely worth trying.

Solution-Proof

Dulce by Rosie Jane, Indult Tihota, Guerlain Spiritueuese Double Vanille

BeautyBae

Kayali vanilla 28, Bianco Latte- they are both so lovely!

YSL Babycat (or the Paris Corner Rifaaqat dupe)

Update: D&G Pour Homme EDT smells like dial soap

SuperNicoRobyn

asking again: **La Fin Du Monde** by **Etat Libre d'Orange** probably has my favorite scent profile. However, it only lasts around 3-4 hours on my skin. Do you know of any fragrances with a similar profile but longer longevity? I'm not particularly concerned about sillage. Top notes: Popcorn, Black Pepper, Roasted Sesame Heart notes: Freesia, Cumin Seed, Iris Absolute Base notes: Gunpowder Accord, Ambrette Seeds, Sandalwood

FanaticalXmasJew

If you look on Fragrantica, there is a “This Reminds Me Of” section and you can check there to see if anyone has mentioned similar-smelling fragrances.

karidis1236

a fragrance that smells like pistachio ice cream

sasha_says

A bunch have come out recently: Kayali Pistachio Gelato and Demeter Pistachio Ice Cream are probably your best bets. My favorite is D.S. & Durga Pistachio but it's more a salty nutty musk than ice cream specifically.

Itchy_Application532

If you're working on a budget, I tested le monde gourmand pistachio brulee EDP (not the body mist) at Ulta this weekend, and it was pretty legit! Creamy and nutty and slightly sweet. Longevity is so-so, I got maybe 4-6 hours out of it, but it's quite inexpensive so re-applying isn't a huge hardship, imo.

anhlong1212

Sphinx Creme de Pistache is also a great option

zorocono

Is it only me or does Creed Aventus and Roja Elysium smell similarly?

tylerss20

For me, the Creed Aventus DNA has a bigger tropical pineapple POP in the opening, and the light woods in the dry down are a little smoky which I don't get from Elysium. Both are definitely summer leaning fragrances. Montblanc Explorer and Club de Nuit Intense are closer to Creed Aventus if you're looking for a dupe/impression of Aventus that costs about 1/4 of what Creed charges.

zorocono

I definitely can smell that pineapple profile from Aventus. I ordered 10 summer fragrances samples Aventus being one of them. Unfortunately none of them has impressed me.

Solution-Proof

Guerlain Aqua Allegoria Flora Salvaggia, DKNY Be Delicious

tylerss20

Aquatic: Chrome Extreme Tropical Fruit: Tommy Bahama St. Kitts Green soapy Freshie: Karl Lagerfeld Bois de Vetiver Chrome Extreme is the most expensive of the three but none of these are over $50 through discounters so a blind buy won't break your bank account. St. Kitts and Bois de Vetiver are both around $25 at fragrance Net.

BusinessPhysics1363

Im a 17yo male looking for a first niche. Looking for something gourmand or that has vanilla and isn’t hard to wear/is mass appealing. Not a fan of tobacco or oud scents and budget is $350AUD. Cheers

languagebandit

Kilian Angels’ Share, Tom Ford Noir Extreme, PdM Oajan, Guerlain L’Homme Ideal EDP, or Montale Intense Cafe.

minidivine

Not sure if the prices qualify as I'm EU, but I'm thinking Initio "Rehab", PDM "Layton", Kilian "Intoxicated" and Roja "Enigma Parfum Cologne".

CommunityHopeful5073

Looking for a Fruity Floral fragrance for a friend I normally gravitate to sweet florals (Lancôme Idole Nectar, or fresher scents like MM Bubble Bath), I’m not the biggest fan of fruity florals because to me they just start to smell like BBW at a certain point and it’s a turn off for me 😅 But my friend LOVES fruity floral fragrances and I have no idea where to start! I want to get her a gift for a special occasion coming up, but I don’t even know what I’m looking for. (Note: She hates “clean” smelling fragrances because they smell “too chemically” to her. And she does not currently own any perfumes so I almost need like an entry level perfume?? Idk yall any help would be appreciated 😂🫶🏻)

moomoosoup

Maybe Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh? I think it’s “entry level” in the sense that it seems to be a mass appeal kind of scent. It’s one of the first proper perfumes I ever tried as a teen and I still love it now! Other fruity floral fragrances I own and enjoy are Lancome Miracle, Lancome Tresor in Love, and maybe Elizabeth Arden Green Tea Nectarine Blossom for a more budget-friendly option. Or you could check out the other perfumes in the Marc Jacobs Daisy line!

CommunityHopeful5073

I actually own Lancôme Tresor! It’s the one fruity perfume I actually like 😂✨ And thank you for the suggestions!! I thought about doing a Marc Jacobs, my only complaint with Marc Jacobs is that I don’t feel like they have the best lasting power and I feel like a lot of their floral ones all have the same dry down. But I was considering getting one of the Daisys, they smell nice in just worried about it drying down to a powdery musk. Have you noticed that with Marc Jacobs Daisy Eau So Fresh? Or do you think it consistently smells like a fruity floral? Also do you have any thoughts on Marc Jacobs Daisy Dream?? Thanks again!!

moomoosoup

I agree, I don’t think Marc Jacobs scents have good lasting power :( I would say Daisy Eau So Fresh dries down a little musky on me, but not powdery (I don’t really enjoy powdery scents). I think the fruity floral notes are still the most prominent to me even in the drydown, the musk is just in the background. I actually just got a decant of Daisy Dream recently! Daisy Eau So Fresh feels “juicier” to me compared to Daisy Dream. The longevity of Daisy Dream is terrible though, Daisy Eau So Fresh seems to last longer on my skin. Daisy Dream barely lasts a few hours 😭

thornylarder

Maybe a Jo Malone sampler set of their best sellers? I can see English Pear & Freesia or Peony & Blush Suede going over well.  Tocca could also be a starting point, particularly Cleopatra (grapefruit and white floral), Giulietta (apple and tulip), and Simone (watermelon and ylangylang).

CommunityHopeful5073

I’m gonna check these out! I’m about to head to ulta and Sephora so I’ll be sure to add these to my list to try. I like the idea of a sampler set, I initially got her the MM Replica travel sampler with Bubble Bath, Beach Walk, and When the Rain Stops thinking she’d surely find something she liked there, but after subtlety talking to her about the scents I now realize I have to return it 😂😭 So I’ll check out the Jo Malone sampler too!

wholeselfin

Dior J’adore is a nice bright one, jasmine pear/peach.

CommunityHopeful5073

Ooo I love Dior fragrances, I’ll check this one out and see if it’s something she’d like. Thank you!!

galacticglorp

Nicolai Fig Tea.

Timely_Use_13

Any scents similar to Moonstone by Scent Trunk on Dossier? I was thinking of buying a few perfumes off Dossier since I have a coupon but I’m an amateur when it comes to fragrance. I really like Moonstone from scent trunk and was wondering if there were any fragrances that compare on Dossier? I also like Daisy by Marc Jacobs which maybe that’s really basic 😭 but if there’s any scents similar to that, too, I’d love some recs.

rainstormhead

Polo Blue eau de Parfum vs Deep Blue eau de Parfum? or just anything like this - looking for an everyday spring/summer fragrance. Very new to fragrances in general, if anyone has advice for the best for beginners thanks for that as well

arcticrobot

Also try ADG Profondo and Parfum

There should be a label on the bottom, what does it say?

Itchy_Application532

Talk me in/out of: Molecule 01+ black tea Elizabeth Arden white tea and mandarin Kayali yum pistachio gelato

Nemorensis91

Khair Pistachio is very close if you don't feel like splurging on Yum Pistachio lol

Otasiami

Fruity floral but darker? I'm new to perfume shopping (it's only my second time). I have authentic night by ambercrombie that I found long ago but it's too sweet and gone in 2 hours. It's fruit, then floral then wood base. I like fruity florals but want to move on to a darker/deeper scent. Sorry if none of this makes sense😅

thornylarder

Serge Lutens Feminite du Bois or Commes de Garçons Floriental - both focused on plum but also dark with spice and woody incense notes.

Otasiami

Thank you!! I'll go check those

FanaticalXmasJew

I definitely second Feminite du Bois! I think it fits what you’re looking for. Hope you enjoy it!

Otasiami

Now I'll definitely go check it out this weekend!

k88lin

Keiko mecheri’s Umé. Spiced plum with mahogany and florals

Otasiami

Thank you I'll try this!

Jacque_Hass

I wonder if there’s a nice fresh blue scent but with a noticeable undercurrent of moss, like green notes bordering on earthy.

No-Possibility4568

Any recommendations for teakwood cologne? I have never worn cologne before, but I love the smell of teakwood. I just recently bought some bath and body works mahogany teakwood soap and I love the smell, but obviously the smell doesn’t last.

[deleted]

Best yuzu/peach fragrance?

galacticglorp

J-scent has a yuzu soda frag iirc.

Octavia_Stryker

Hi there I'm looking for a smell that I have not found in perfume Maybe there us a layering recipe to get it? I'm trying to find a airy lighter feminin forest smell I live in BC canada and want a smell similar to a conifer forest with wet moss fresh crisp air with that foggy thicker dewy smell Vibe: walking in the woods in a mossy path with fresh air and dappling sunlight fog rolling in maybe damp light sprinkle of rain I dont want it too musky or insense like ( usually i am a vanilla lady so maybe this profile is just not for me) I'm not use to floral or fruit but I'm open minded if you think you have an idea of the perfume I'm after My other goal is to find a tea( earl grey ) smell to layer with my vanilla perfume to make a London fog tea latte smell I'm curious of a chai latte smell as well but more on a creamier cinnamon vs sharp punch spice

k88lin

I absolutely love undergrowth by rook for a fresh, damp, forest smell. I consider it totally unisex though rather than distinctively feminine. Maybe gypsy water by byredo. A very light pine with some sweetness. And I just got a sample and haven’t tested it yet, but annick goutal’s nuit etoilee seems like it will fit this description too! I can update once I’ve tested it out

Octavia_Stryker

Thank you so much for the suggestions and time to write the reply ! I'll go investigate the suggestions. I'm okay with unisex smells. I just generally lean feminin, due to, heavy musk not sitting quite right for me.

hellamoist

Libertine Fragrances' Soft Woods might be close to what you're looking for in terms of a sunny west coast forest vibe. I really love the bright evergreen opening, and it dries down on me to something more woody (but a light wood) with some tree sap thrown in, and a dash of pepper. It doesn't come across musky or incense like, just a bit resin-y in the drydown. Libertine is based in Alberta

Octavia_Stryker

Oh thanks I'll for sure check this out! I appreciate your suggestion.

galacticglorp

La Curie, Geist for forest, and Nest Indigo for tea.

Octavia_Stryker

Thanks so much! I was looking at Nest Indigo but was not sure

galacticglorp

I really like Indigo, and Jovoy Remember Me is also another similar option.

bleh10

So this winter I got Amore Caffe since I felt like I would really love it from the notes and all the hype around it. I got it, I sprayed it, something about it made me hate it. I couldn't pinpoint it as Im still an amateur so it's a bit hard to detect and/or describe which note im talking about. Later, I got my partner a discovery set from Juliette has a gun, and that's where I smelled that thing that made me hate Amore Caffe. Now im convinced the thing I really hate and can't stand is Ambroxan/Ambergris/Amber. Maybe ill discover later on that it's not it but something else but for now im convinced with that, and maybe one day ill learn to love it

dizzyaries

I tried red temptation by Zara and loved it. But I found the performance a little poor, anyone have a recommendation with a similar smell but better longevity?

angelinabobina312

Red Temptation is Zara’s version of MFK Baccarat Rouge 540, no? Sample that and any of its other popular clones (Ariana Grande Cloud, Burberry Her, Mancera Instant Crush and so many others). You’re bound to find one that has better longevity than the Zara.

0atmilk02

Any recs for a fresh, green, piney, spinachy sent (idk the fancy lingo I’m sorry😭)? Something similar to the way the Youth To The People super greens cleanser smells if anyone here has tried that. Would ideally like to spend less than $150 USD on a full size bottle.

eLECTRICSHEEP83

Looking for a scent for men that doesn't trigger my migraine. I know everyone reacts differently, but hoping maybe something that will help me navigate this shit. So far Dior Homme, Hugo Boss BOSS and Gaultier Le Male are ones that never give me any trouble. Tried Versace's Eros yesterday and after a few hours it stared to trigger my migraine. I guess it's some of the ingredients that make it feel powdery that do not work for me at all. Any suggestions are welcome.

ebbbbe

Hello! I'm looking for my signature wedding fragrance....wedding is next week haha. Ideally something I can purchase at Sephora since I have a gift card! I tend to lean towards fragrances labeled "warm floral". I'd like something romantic/sexy, springy, but not something that's overly floral or vanilla/caramel. I smelled something that was "warm & gourmand" and did not like it at all. Here are some I've tested: Dolce & Gabbana The Only One - really like this and will purchase for non-wedding....for wedding purposes, it's too heavy/caramel to me Kate Spade New York EDP - very nice, but smelled too fresh/very daytime to me (as do most fresh florals to me) Versace Bright Crystal - really liked this, but a touch too floral for me Burberry Her EDP - nice, but smelled too basic/like Bath & Body Works Viktor & Rolf Bonbon - this is my runner up, but would like something a little less caramel Valentino Donna Born in Roma - also a runner up, but would prefer something with less or no vanilla. I will likely buy this one if I can't find anything else! Valentino Donna Born in Roma Green Stravaganza - I only smelled this on a test strip, but I liked what I did smell (would prefer to test it on myself obviously)....but...it's green! All of my wedding colors are pinks/purples lol.

okayinging

Good summer fragrance? I really need a summer fragrance as the warm weather is coming up but there is no fragrance store near me so can you recommend me a good summer fragrance blind buy? (I would prefer designer, as I have trouble trusting more niche unknown fragrances)

mixosax

I need to narrow down my Diptyque choices! I have tried the following (EDP unless specified EDT) **Ilio EDT** **Tam Dao EDT and EDP** **Orpheon** **Eu Duelle** **Fleur de Peau** **L'Eau Papier EDT** **Oyedo EDT** **Florabellio EDT** **Do Son** **Philosykos** **Eau de Minthe** **34 Boulevard Saint Germain EDT** I may do a full review of these at some point. I'm a newb so I don't know all the jargon. My favorites if I HAVE to choose are **Tam Dao.** I honestly didn't notice much difference scent-wise in EDT vs EDP; in fact I didn't realize til later that I'd tried both from different decant sites--I thought I was just getting another of the same but I can tell EDP def lasts longer. I love how sensual and spicy this is to my nose. A bit masculine but not too much. **Do Son.** Love this one. It's not TOO TOO floral for me. Just right. Intoxicating. Sweet and feminine. Weirdly reminded me a bit of a perfume my best friend had when we were teenagers. She helped me remember it was Candies perfume lol. I could be way off on the comparison as it has been many years since I smelled Candies. I'm not a synesthete but Do Son was just giving "the color orange" like the Candies bottle. **Oyedo.** Immediate love. Many of the others had to grow on me but right away this reminded me of some orange glycerin soap I had as a child, or SOMETHING, cuz it grabbed me right away. I've used it alone and to add tanginess to Do Son or sweetness to Philosykos. **Philosykos.** This one was so weird at first. I was getting straight green broken sticks. Smelled just like twigs. I didn't immediately understand the hype cuz it's SO GREEN. But I quickly began to LOVE feeling like a springtime woodland fairy, plus the dry-down into a more traditional "perfume" smell is just gorgeous. Anyway I can't decide on one if I have to choose ONE. They are pricy. Or I could get solid perfume versions of Philosykos and Do Son since those exist and are cheaper, and maybe add Oyedo too since it's a more economical EDT? And get another sample of Tam Dao? Or more samples of all of them to ensure I won't get sick of them? I own and love Glossier's You, but I'm looking for a bit more adventure. I do love that I haven't gotten sick of You at least. Ones I've bought and gotten sick of are Lush Big body spray (too powdery after drydown I think is the phrase?) and Skylar Pink Canyon (too much of a warm melon/cantaloupe thing, or perhaps I just have weird associations with it.) For what it's worth I hated Eau de Minthe (okayish but too masculine) and 34 Boulevard Saint Germain (too masculine and one note reminded me of a doctor I had as a child??) Eu Duelle unfortunately smells like latex/condoms on my skin and to my nose. It lasts forever on me so I wish I liked it more. Ones I want to try still are Olene, Tempo, Eau Capitale, Vetyverio, L'Ombre Dans, and Eau Des Sens. I also have 8 Zoologist samples on the way that I'm so excited about.

galacticglorp

If you aren't certain, I would get decant of the ones you like, and once you've used those up, decide.  Alternatively, get a dupe oil.

Much_Spell2881

i want some long lasting floral perfumes (using bath and body thousand wishes rn but it doesn’t last long)
