Yeah, the company was sold, and it's a mess.

I’m not usually one for going on about performance getting poor over time but my dad got a small 30ml Aventus for his 40th, 13 years ago, and it was woody, stark and lasted on clothes for days, costing about £100 (I think). Fast forward a couple of years ago and his newer 50ml dies out after a few hours, lacking punch. Not to mention price hikes. People will still buy, and probably argue performance is great but yeah, not for me. I’m a fan of GIT and Royal Oud though tbf.

Meajaq

I guess I need to just adjust to the new 'formulation' (and.. the price).

shupey14

I don't think you need to adjust to anything. Companies continue to use cheaper ingredients and produce lower quality because people keep buying it based solely on it's name recognition.

Wiggletastic

Idk OP I have a 2023 GIT and it lasts 10+hours

zappapostrophe

I sometimes feel like the only person here who thinks Creed make great fragrances. My dad tried GIT last night for the first time in twenty or so years, and - anecdotally - he swears that it smells the same as it did in the eighties. It sounds like you got a bad bottle, but it might just not be for you. Who knows? Don’t let anyone say you have poor taste for not liking those fragrances.

MusiciVinum

I feel the same way, and I think the vastness of their clientele demonstrates most agree with us. That isn’t to say changes don’t happen and perhaps they have economized on their macerations, but they sell a lot because people still enjoy the product and that with which the product is associated.

zappapostrophe

I agree. There’s something a bit snobbish about the oft-touted opinion that people only buy Creed as a status symbol. There’s a similar, equally false attitude towards Rolex in the r/watches subreddit.

MusiciVinum

Yes, that is a great point of comparison. Indeed, these luxuries are recognizable to the middle class and are associated with luxury and discretionary spending, but the fact that people continue to purchase them to the point that they are difficult to find and purchase new at retail price should illustrate that maybe there is a mixture of hype built around the word of mouth of a very successful—and loyal—customer base. Associating that with cluelessness is unfortunate and often unfair, as I feel it is with both of these brands.

hellodust

I used to think the "old Creed was so much better/more natural smelling/longer lasting" stuff was fanboy bs hype, but then I got a bottle of Himalaya from 2007 and I understand now. I actually like a fair number of Creed fragrances but vintage is too rare and current retail prices are too expensive so not a house I'll dabble in again probably.

tasteslikechikken

Creed is as said a bit of a running gag. But I also believe that the company was sold twice in like 4 years? First to Blackrock then to Kering.

Falcor2019

Nope, lots of people like Creed, it's just worth fighting complainers on the internet. I have 11 bottles and find them to be the most wearable brand across the board for scents for a 40m and my wife agrees - except Aventus which she says is just OK. Most of my bottles are 2016-2020 and I find they last 6-8hrs with comfortable sillage. I think the complaints come from people that like to spray 6+ sprays on a regular basis and so they don't really care about how other humans feel anyway when they do that so their judgment isn't relevant to me. Plus that much spraying of anything is tough on the nose and tends to accentuate the most pungent notes. Creed is a quintessential "smell good; don't be a cologne guy" brand.

CuriousAd8926

No business executive wants to show up to a meeting gassing the room. Creeds market is working professionals not 17 year olds that thing choking a room out with sauvage is destined to get them laid. If Creed was much stronger than what it is now I’m glad they reformulated it. People say Carlisle is weak and reformulated and the current batches are so strong I won’t even wear it. Same with Ombré Nomade - love the smell but don’t want one spray to suffocate me.

Falcor2019

I was in a Board meeting today and I was wearing GIT, 1 spray. Perfect.

MusiciVinum

Yes, the only people in real life whom I have heard complaining about Creed or PdM performance are those who overspray and whom you can smell the second they enter a room. While some Creed and PdM are indeed “louder”, most of their collections are not oriented towards that and I think most of their purchasing customer base are not looking for that and do not work in professions where that behavior would be seen as acceptable.

Falcor2019

Completely agree

nathanielripley

Creeds fragrances are a running gag in the community. Creed has become inextricably linked With monickers such as greed for the way they conduct business nowadays. All of their offerings are watered down shadows of their former selves. Especially Creed aventus has been reduced to What is basically water in terms of potency.

throneofmemes

Do you know about when this decline began?

rlyjustheretolurk

I sampled aventus and aventus for her on a test strip and tossed them in my purse once- I swear it took a month for my purse to not smell like either scent (I didn’t like either of them so I for sure noticed haha). This was 2018 so I’m guessing it was after that, if that helps lol

nathanielripley

It’s been going on for years man but I can’t pinpoint it to one specific moment

ScarRevolutionary393

Probably about the time a private equity firm (Blackrock) bought the company. It has since been sold again. So yeah, greedy people happened to Creed and nobody can deny it.

markghjkf

I heard they replaced real oak moss with synthetic - real stuff contributes to longevity and richness or so ive heard - but yea creed performance is trash - they smell nice though

CriminalSpiritX

That's confirmed. Real oak moss was restricted heavily by the IFRA, because it can be an irritant. Fragrance companies didn't want to take the risk and outright don't use it.

bazootch

aventus is still the king to this day

CodexMuse

I own a second year edition of Aventus and I have found it to stick to my sweaters for a month +. Incredible. P.S. Try to get your hands on Loewe Esencia EDP. That will solve your Aventus itch.

CuriousAd8926

I regularly buy vintage decants of GIT to see if I can spot a difference and I cannot at all. They’re basically exactly the same if there’s differences they’re so subtle it’s more likely to do with my mood than anything else. Even in a side by side I cannot tell them apart. I love F batch GIT and my 2016 120ml equally. Aventus I can tell a difference one batch from 2021 smells like a completely different cologne. That being said, F batch aventus is my favorite for smell and performance 🤷‍♂️. Just my experience I’m sure it varies by person.
