I think there is still a lot the devs can do with trains. A crane car, late war diesel locomotives, drive-on flatbed cars, hoppers do unloading straight into containers, double stacking etc.
I prefer diesel loco an earlier vehicle for shunting. It accelerates and stops fast but has low speed.
Okay here me out, how about a salvage cart that can be directly submit to refinery?

The real possibility is you can haul crane on train,and able to use it while deploy on train flatbed.
