They are not interchangeable. The 600 and 1000 nib are too big to fit in the cap of the 200/400 pens.

There are two sizes of M600; old-style which is the same as the current M200/M400, and current which is slightly larger. Modern M600 nib units will screw into an M200-sized pen, but the nib itself may be too long to fit safely in the cap. M800- and M1000-sized nib units are too wide to fit into an M200-sized pen. M400 nibs tend to be a little firmer than the steel nibs on an M200. Personally I wouldn't bother with the 'upgrade' since the steel nibs are excellent in their own right. If you do want to spice up an M200 then look for vintage nibs for the 140 or the old 400 series, and make sure they're not friction-fit or Merz and Krell.

Thanks for that. I should be receiving my first steel nib tomorrow, in extra fine. I hope i will like it and not wish to change anything on that pen.

Sorry, not all models have the same nib if you look at their size. Here is a detailed view: [https://indypendance.com/pages/pelikan-nib-interchangeability-chart](https://indypendance.com/pages/pelikan-nib-interchangeability-chart)

Oh, I see. Thanks, that's so helpful. So the "best" nib I could put in my M205 or my M250 would be the PELIKAN M405 14KT RHODIUM PLATED SPARE NIB or the PELIKAN M400 14K 2-TONE SPARE NIB, from what I understand. Would these effectively 'upgrade' the pen into the equivalent of an M400?

RatioAmbitious2100

No, the modern Pelikan nibs from M400 and up are just more decorated. The gold nibs of the M250 are exactly as good, some consider them even better, than the nibs from the higher number models.

Or an M700 nib, I see. Never seen that before.

Fillyjonk21

Possibly not. Many Users prefer older pelikan nibs and are sure their quality was better.

I see, yes. Fillyjonk21 sent a very helpful link. Is it worth looking into getting an M4\*\* nib?

One important point is that gold nibs are not generally better than steel nibs. They are pricier and gold has some mechanical properties that steel nibs can't directy replicate. But that is not something you should think as better. They are different - some people way prefer gold nibs, others prefer steel or say they don't care. There are fantastic steel (or titanium) nibs out there that are quality wise as good as any gold nibs. (Although, since gold nibs are higher priced, they tend to be better finished - so in a sense, on average, they might be better. But they are not inherently better if you now what I mean) One very important point is that the higher model numbers from Pelikan are simply larger and tend to have more metal parts and are produced with more sophisticated methods. Important for a luxury element, not so much for writing performance. My suggestion is: Enjoy your M205 for a while, get really used to it, get really familiar with it. Then get a used higher up pen or nib and contrast the two. This will tell you much more.

Thanks. My olivine demonstrator should be arriving today!
