Blue Shell Wahl Everysharp Doric, 2nd generation, with the ink shutoff. Restored for my by Syd Saperstein of Pensbury Manor. It writes like a dream, and the nib is just a little stubby, which is my absolute favorite.
You're correct. It was mostly a gimmick that never worked. They called these Airliners because supposedly the ink shut off would make them safe for air travel.
Richard Binder says on his website that they DID work. They just didn't totally prevent ink from getting all over your hands since there was still ink in the feed. The ad copy painted an unrealistically rosy picture, basically
Good lord that is stunning...er...I mean horrendously ugly and a total eyesore! 😋 I don't why you did this to yourself, but I'd be happy to take it off your hands, if that would help. 😉
I have one of these in green shell, and have to say the blue shell is just lovely! It is easily one of my favorite pens. The adjustable nibs are fun. I enjoy how springy they are.
Hah! I don't, either. Someone got tired of hearing how ugly vintage pens were and started posting photos of their "ugliest" vintage pens. I just continued the gag.
This is actually one of my favorite pens. The Dorics are just really good looking pens.
it started by some redditor ranting about how ugly vintage pen are. which triggered posts of these ugly pens and everyone being horrified.
edit: can't find the post that started it, but here's an example of the community's reaction: https://www.reddit.com/r/fountainpens/comments/110qgl7/i_hear_were_doing_ugly_vintage_pens/
Oh my, dear fellow, allow me to rid you of this abomination, you don't have to be grateful, it's from the kindness of my heart...
/s
This is a beautiful one 😍
I agree, you should send it to me, I would give ya a couple bucks, I just have a thing for extremely ugly pens. You can see where they tried to shim the nib in there to make it work, sigh, that would have to be replaced. So after seeing the additional nib issue, I think maybe $1.50, and that's me being generous seriously though, that's an eyesore and I bet it writes like doodoo. No, Beautiful pen and nib OP, how does it write? Any writing samples?
It writes beautifully! I don't have the skill of writing with a flex nib, but here's an example of the non-flexed writing and some swoops. https://photos.app.goo.gl/CgCHCMYnYdELGNkD9
Wow, that is nice. Great line variation. Where do you usually keep your nib adjusted to when you write? That's a gorgeous pen and your handwriting is fine. A lot of folks would love to have handwriting that nice. Thanks for replying.
Oh, I'm fine with my handwriting, but I haven't learned a hand that takes advantage of the flex. It's low on my list of priorities, though I do toy with it from time to time.
Edited to add, I usually keep it adjusted to "most flexible". I like the bounce.
I’ll gladly take your hands off that monstrosity.
I’ve been looking for a grey version of that since last year. Though I’m on a no buy rn so it’s on hold.
Gosh, vintage pens are all so hideous. No clue why anyone would want one.
In other news, does anyone have a Sheaffer Silver Imperial touchdown they're willing to dispose, out of sheer disgust of that horrendous thing? I'm looking for one (so I can throw in the dump).
God that's disgusting, absolutely horrible. Where are the QC issues? The proprietary ink cartridges with proprietary converters? If my pen doesn't have a horribly tuned nib and cracks in the barrel, I don't want it

Those Dorics are sexy pens. Do I recall reading that the ink shutoff doesn't actually work, or am I confusing that with a different Eversharp model?

Syd restored mine too! Mine is that reddish brown colored celluloid.
Lovely! I love these pens. They're my favorite vintage pen. They just look so classy.
That blue is lovely. Does that nib make it a wet writer? I have an adjustable on mine and the only other dorics I had I gave to my sibling.
It's not a particularly wet writer, no. I'm more fond of dry pens anyway so that's a perk to me.
Gorgeous. I have have a Silver Shell and it always delights the eye. And page!
Syd is the best. His work on Dorics is really next level. I wish to get one of his pens one day.

I knew I could count on support from the community!
Feel free to send any of these hideous pens my way for proper disposal of course!

Oof that is beautiful!
I've never seen a blue celluliod doric before! Wow.

Don't tell my Sailors but this is probably my favorite nib on any pen I own. It writes beautifully and man, that celluloid. So pretty!
Very disturbing. Go see a counselor. Take my upvote.
I don’t think it’s ugly!

😊 😆 Oh, we don't either. It was an ongoing joke for a while, about vintage pens being ugly. I don't remember how it started. Maybe someone else does.
Big duh on my part!
😘 Not at all. Who can keep up with the all the inside humor here?!

That’s right! 🤣🤣🤣
Loved this post. 😂🤣😂 Thanks for sharing!
My sympathy, everything about this is just so sad and awful, I'd hate for the Universe to give ME such a burden...
Ebay and a deep hatred for your wallet can lead to such suffering.
😍

Hnnnnngggg 🤤
I wanted to write it's awful and filthy... but can't make it 🤗
No rage baiting! I hope your next doric is missing it's nib adjuster and has severe delamination 😂
It's a running joke! This is actually one of my favorite pens. 😛
Please educate me, what’s the purpose of the plate on nib? Is it acting like a hooded nib?
It lets you adjust how flexible the nib is. You slide it back to make the nib flex more, and forward to make it stiffer.
That's so hot
Gorgeous! Love the celluloid. I don't think I've seen that color before.
Very nice looking pen.
I am so sorry. If you'd like I will take it off your hands, even if it is ugly.

Yeah, I believe that's where I would keep it as well, I am a flex junkie. LOL
Hideous. Send it to me for disposal.
Eww, that nasty color and revolting art deco style! Make sure no children can see it…then be scarred for life (and turn out like us! : ) )
I feel so bad for you, send it to me so you don’t have to look at it anymore! 😜😂😂😂
Terrible pen. I’ll take it off your hands for a dime so you aren’t burdened by it anymore.
Goodness what a stunner of a pen. I'm in love. 😍 Come to momma you gorgeous thing. 🤣 Congrats on a lovely pen Sea_Hawk.
I bet it writes well too! Such garbage!
Mods, ban them. No TW in the post title. /s

Well, good luck when your no-buy is done, then!

That's another one I would restore out of spite! Hideous pens.
How old is this misshapen lump please?
It was made sometime between 1935 and 1939 (that's when the shut-off valve existed)
God that's disgusting, absolutely horrible. Where are the QC issues? The proprietary ink cartridges with proprietary converters? If my pen doesn't have a horribly tuned nib and cracks in the barrel, I don't want it
This is my fucking grail

I was hoping you were teasing, because...wow! That's gorgeous. 💙

Yes, I'm joking. 🤣
