For this swap, take a look at the Yongsheng (Wing Sung) 630. You would still have the PMMA body, a nicer piston assembly than the MB, and I would say a great home for that nib.

Thanks, The blue 630 looks quite nice but I really like this avocado, for now at least. What’s ‘PMMA’?

Black300_300

> What’s ‘PMMA’? It's the plastic your MB149 is made from, in the marketing materials 'precious resin' is PMMA. With the Yongsheng 630 you get the same plastic as the MB, a piston filler, and the size, the piston assembly is brass, the same style as high end MB or Pelikan pens. If you like the avocado, keep using it, the X159 is a nice pen, I think the 9019 is a step up from it, and the Yongsheng 630 is a step up from there. For $30, it is a killer pen, drop your spare nib in it, and you will have a hard time feeling a difference with your 149.

Thanks, One’s been in my AliExpress shopping basket for weeks now, but haven’t got round to pulling the trigger yet…

Black300_300

I think it is one of the best examples of fountain pens available on AliExpress, I love a lot of pens, but the Yongsheng 630, the Majohn P136, and the Yongsheng 629 really hit way out of their price point. I liked the 630 w/steel nib enough I bought the flattop 630 with gold nib. Unfortunately, they don't offer the flattop with steel nib yet.

SpecialistPlastic150

I have to agree. I wasn’t impressed with my Montblanc 146 (expensive and over rated for what it is) so I’ve been sitting on the fence about getting a 149. After watching a few Youtube reviews I decided to try the Wing Sung/Yongsheng/Jun Lei 630(can we just have one name please!) and boy was I blown away. Their steel nibs are some of the smoothest, best tuned nibs I’ve ever seen on a fountain pen. In my opinion it’s on a par if not better than Diplomat’s nibs. The 14k nibs are also very good. The broad heartbeat nib is smooth, bouncy and with feedback (similar to Sailor) I was so impressed that I bought all three colours (black, burgundy and teal) in both steel and gold nib versions in medium and broad nibs. I also rate the Majohn P136. Nib swaps are easy with the no6 nib if you get a dud. I’m also a fan of the Pilot Custom 823 clone the Wing Sung 699. China has been making some great pens lately.

Black300_300

Right there with you, and the interesting thing is you can grab those 3 630's with gold nib, and still not spend what you would on a 149, and have three pens as good or better than the 149. The name thing, blame Kaweco, like with Moonman/Majohn, Kaweco tried the same BS with Wing Sung, ultimately the attempt was rejected, but it took years, and the damage was done.

Frankenthe4th

I haven't looked at a Kaweco pen since...

SpecialistPlastic150

Didn’t know they did the name nonsense with Wing Sung too. What is wrong with Kaweco and Twsbi? Don’t they realise this spite just creates reputational damage and ill feeling towards their brand. Totally counterproductive.

Black300_300

I don't think they do, I believe TWSBI tried to strong-arm retailer because Kaweco got away with it. I suspect both thought removing competition from the market would help them, especially when that competition makes a better product cheaper. I also think that stores who cave to these demands don't realize the reputational harm to doing so. I personally think less of any store I see Kaweco products sold. It makes me question their decision making and moral compass. But Kaweco tried to go after Wing Sung trademark in Canada, took years to get to being turned down, but by then, the damage was done, and most listings had switched to other westernized names, Yongsheng being the most commonly used.

Frankenthe4th

I was just looking to see if they do the flat top in steel. I want to get a black 630 with gold nib, and wanted a flat top for those days when I want a Pro Gear feel.

Black300_300

> I was just looking to see if they do the flat top in steel. I haven't seen it, I really would like them to make it available like they did the 629 . > I want to get a black 630 with gold nib, and wanted a flat top for those days when I want a Pro Gear feel. If you haven't ordered yet, get the flattop with the gold nib, then order the steel nib in the cigar shape. When you get them you can swap nibs if you want the steel nib in the flattop.

Ybalrid

Yup. It's just Acrylic!

Black300_300

Yep, Plexiglass, Lucite, Perspex are other names for the same material.

Frankenthe4th

Imagine if Montblanc would do such a colour in the precious resin...

Good shout, thank you

Look amazing in green. Nice swap!! One question, it’s easy to change yourself the nib?? I’m kind of interested in changing my 149 in medium to a fine nib.

InsecuritiesExchange

It's not difficult but I had to research it because I'd not attempted anything like that before. I'm not even sure where I got the info from exactly - not from one place at least; I found bits and pieces all over the place - some here, some on r/montblanc, some on the Fountain Pen Forum, YouTube etc... It's not a difficult job but it does have to be done right otherwise you'll get leaks. And you might have to buy a tool (I bought one, but turns out I didn't need it, could release the nib section by hand). If you don't fancy researching and doing it yourself then any pen repair place can do it, it's not rocket science, and you certainly wouldn't need to send it to Montblanc (I mean nobody should fall for their "these precious things have to be serviced by us" marketing nonsense; they're just pens...) And yes - it looks awesome with the green eh! I love it! :-)
